【ホテル探訪】ついに念願のNOT A HOTELへ！ミニマル建築 × 絶景の最高傑作【宮崎・青島】

Hello everyone, this is Okada, an architect on vacation. 🌞 Today, I’m visiting Aoshima, Miyazaki Prefecture. This island, known for its tropical air and relaxed pace of life, has long been a beloved resort destination, boasting dynamic views of the ocean and nature. Today, I’m exploring Not A Hotel, a hotel brand currently garnering attention both from within Japan and overseas. Among them, Not A Hotel AOSHIMA, located in a spectacular location overlooking the ocean. I’ll explore this special building , combining magnificent views with minimalist, sophisticated architecture . First, I’ll fill my stomach with Miyazaki’s specialty, chicken nanban. The tropical resort I’m exploring, NOT A HOTEL AOSHIMA, opened in 2022 as NOT A HOTEL’s first base. Located about a 15-minute drive from Miyazaki Airport, it enjoys a stunning location overlooking the ocean of Aoshima. It was designed by Shin Ohori of GENERAL DESIGN. The hotel offers four different types of guest rooms, each with a different design and layout, all over 100 square meters in size. They combine the privacy of a villa with the comfort of a vacation home. Our room, “GARDEN 2,” is surrounded by two private gardens, featuring a 57-square-meter garden as the “Sea and Garden Room.” Let’s take a look at this special space! Upon entering the entrance, you’re greeted by the first dining garden. The open space stretches out to the sky, complemented by tropical-inspired plants, exudes a comfortable resort feel amidst the sophisticated design. BBQ sets are also available for rental, so enjoying an outdoor meal while feeling the ocean breeze is a wonderful idea. Now, let’s step inside. Opening these large triple-paned glass doors reveals a spacious living and kitchen area. The living and dining area, seamlessly connected to the garden, features an island kitchen and a generous layout of approximately 55 square meters. The spacious sofas offer a luxurious experience, and the room is equipped with a large TV and high-performance Bang & Olufsen speakers. Guests can relax in any style they like. Opening the glass doors further enhances the sense of openness, seamlessly connecting the interior with the garden, creating a luxuriously comfortable experience. By arranging the sink, induction cooktop, and other appliances against the wall, the area around the dining table is neatly organized and finished as a beautiful counter. This sophisticated space is picturesque for both cooking and dining. Glasses and coffee sets are beautifully arranged in the storage space, and a wine cellar is also included. Cookware and cutlery are neatly arranged and neatly stored in the counter-side storage . Next to the kitchen is a “convenience store” space stocked with a variety of items, from alcoholic beverages such as champagne, wine, and beer to soft drinks, curry, cup noodles, and snacks. Next, let’s take a look at the bedroom and study. Adjacent to the living space is a simple and open bedroom, gently separated by a glass partition. The headboard features a touch panel that allows intuitive control of all amenities, including lighting, air conditioning, a humidifier, and blinds. Further into the bedroom, a separate study space appears. This special space allows for immersion in reading or work while taking in the expansive garden and ocean views from the windows . The unique scenery of Aoshima quietly stimulates creativity. Next, let’s take a look at the bathroom. Entering through the door next to the kitchen reveals the impressive, long, narrow washroom space that leads to the rear courtyard. The tranquil design features two spacious sinks set against an artificial marble countertop. Further inside, on the right, is the toilet. Further inside, there’s a glass-enclosed shower space. The layout is both private and spacious, creating a pleasant atmosphere. Opening the door at the back reveals another garden that leads to the sea. The terrace is equipped with a large cypress open-air bath, creating an open, relaxing space. Directly connected to the beach, the room is equipped with a surfboard rack and a shower area for post-surfing use. Olive trees sway in the garden, allowing guests to relax in a hammock and enjoy their private time without worrying about being seen. If you go further into the garden and descend a flight of stairs, you’ll find the endless beach right in front of you. Here, you can enjoy surfing, relaxing on the beach, or strolling around the nearby Aoshima Shrine— all in the spirit of Aoshima time. With this, the room tour comes to a close, and we’ll take our time to enjoy this special space. For our 3 o’clock snack, we’ll have a Miyazaki specialty, the “Cheese Bun.” Then, before dinner, we’ll relax with a beer from Miyazaki-based craft beer maker Noboru Brewing. It’s a comfortable time that makes you feel like you’re living in a luxurious home. Now, it’s time for dinner, so let’s head to the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant, LDK. Restaurant LDK is an all-day dining establishment offering dishes made with Miyazaki’s bountiful ingredients and authentic sweets. Its casual atmosphere and high quality make it a place enjoyed by people of all ages. For my first drink, I chose the classic mojito, a perfect choice for an architect’s vacation. In the open, seaside atmosphere, I thoroughly enjoyed dishes made with Miyazaki’s rich ingredients. I then decided to relax in my room. I had breakfast at Restaurant LDK, just like dinner. Unlike the evening, the mornings are bathed in abundant light, transforming the space into an open, spacious space where you can gaze upon the surrounding greenery and ocean. I ordered the Japanese breakfast set. It was a satisfying breakfast featuring nine side dishes that fully showcased the flavors of the ingredients, accompanied by freshly cooked rice. With a view of Aoshima’s beach from my seat, I enjoyed a relaxing breakfast. Before checkout, I spent the time relaxing in a hammock, enjoying the sea breeze. Finally, we’ll enjoy the POOL & SAUNA at the adjacent “AOSHIMA BEACH VILLAGE,” which is free for guests to use. The beautiful blues of the sky, ocean, and pool blend together like a gradient, creating a blissful space that truly embodies the term “tropical resort.” Spending a relaxing time poolside while admiring the beautifully curved pool , or soaking in the barrel sauna and enjoying a moment of relaxation while gazing out at the ocean, is a wonderful experience. Its minimalist architecture, nestled in Aoshima’s lush natural surroundings , blends quietly with the landscape , rather than boasting newness, as if it had been here for ages . The faded wooden exterior and lush greenery create a space that exudes a mysterious sense of security, as if simply being there relaxes the soul. I thoroughly enjoyed experiencing this new way of spending time, which is both a hotel and a villa. The unique atmosphere of Aoshima, where surf culture thrives, combined with the sophisticated worldview of NOT A HOTEL made for a special stay that allowed both body and mind to relax.
