🇮🇹 Florence, ITALY Walking Tour 4K | Historic City Center, Duomo & Ponte Vecchio

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the channel. Today I’m taking you on a walk through Florence. First stop of the day: the Accademia Gallery. Luckily, the line isn’t too long today! That gives us more time to explore the unrivaled mastery of Renaissance art The Accademia was founded in 1784 by Grand Duke Peter Leopold of Lorraine to teach art Beyond David the gallery also holds important works by Botticelli and Perugino Did you know the Accademia also houses a rare collection of musical instruments including a Stradivarius violin This incredible hall the Tribuna was specially designed with a skylight to illuminate David’s perfection The David became a symbol of the Florentine Republic’s independence and strength against the Medici That was just a taste of the Accademia We will share a full in-depth video of the complete visit later We are now heading straight to the heart of Florence, the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore Let’s enjoy the atmosphere of the streets as we make our way to the Cathedral We are navigating Florence’s medieval streets a perfect contrast to the grand art we just saw Get ready for the first glimpse of a true architectural wonder Brunelleschi’s masterpiece No matter how many times you see it, the Duomo is always impressive. Construction of the cathedral started in 1296 and took almost 150 years to complete The Duomo was officially completed in 1436 Its famous dome was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, a genius of the Renaissance The cathedral is dedicated to “Saint Mary of the Flower” – Santa Maria del Fiore The exterior is covered in white, green and pink marble. Together with its dome, campanile and baptistery, this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Suddenly, the Duomo appears right in front of us The Duomo took so long to finish that several generations worked on it Many architects thought Brunelleschi’s idea for the dome was impossible It’s said that Brunelleschi kept parts of his technique secret so no one could copy him Even today, restoration work is constantly being done to protect all these details Florence feels different when you stand here Standing right in front of the main façade of Florence Cathedral taking it all in The more you look at this façade the more hidden details start to appear The dome is about 116 meters high from the ground There are 463 steps to reach the top of the dome no elevator From the top of the dome you get one of the best panoramic views of Florence The construction of the dome started in the early 1400s led by Brunelleschi At the time no one knew how to build such a big dome without collapsing Florence is the capital of the Tuscany region in central Italy The city has around 360000 residents but feels full of life with tourists all year round Florence is often called the cradle of the Renaissance Many people consider Florence one of the most beautiful cities in the world The historic center of Florence is a UNESCO World Heritage Site Florence was one of the richest and most powerful cities in medieval Europe The famous Medici family ruled Florence and sponsored many artists and architects Artists like Michelangelo Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli all worked in Florence The local dialect of Florence became the base for standard Italian thanks to writers like Dante and Boccaccio Florence is packed with museums including the Uffizi Gallery and Palazzo Pitti Every year millions of visitors come to Florence mainly for art history and food Florence is also an important city for Italian fashion and design Many parts of the center still follow the medieval street layout Now we’re going inside the cathedral but today it’s just a quick look In a future video you’ll see the full interior tour today it’s only a quick glimpse Inside the dome you can see huge frescoes of the Last Judgment Florence is busy and touristy but it still feels like a living city not just a museum Sunrise and sunset are some of the best moments to see Florence especially from the nearby hills Even away from the main sights you still find churches palaces and little hidden courtyards Florence is a perfect city to explore on foot distances are short but there is something to see everywhere Early in the morning Florence feels calm and almost empty By midday the main streets fill up with walking tours and groups In the evening locals and visitors mix in the bars and restaurants You can feel the mix between a living city and an open air museum Now we’re entering Piazza della Repubblica one of the main squares in Florence Walking into Piazza della Repubblica with its big arch and busy cafés This is Piazza della Repubblica a lively square right in the heart of Florence On the corner here is Gilli one of the most historic cafés in Florence Gilli has been serving coffee and pastries here for generations Old style café tables modern city life all meeting here at Gilli Perfect spot to sit down grab a coffee and just watch Florence go by AFFOGATO: Fresh espresso poured straight over the gelato Leaving the café and getting back to the streets of Florence Leaving Piazza della Repubblica and heading deeper into Florence Passing some street stalls with bags souvenirs and random treasures Florence is full of little street stands like these Just wandering through the streets of Florence no rush Every corner here looks like a movie set This massive stone building is Orsanmichele once a grain market now a church Even the quiet backstreets feel full of character These streets have seen centuries of people passing by Florence also has its own football team ACF Fiorentina Many locals grow up supporting Fiorentina generation after generation Art history food and calcio all mixed together in everyday Florence Now we’re walking through the Porcellino market in Florence This is the Mercato del Porcellino famous for leather and souvenirs Here is the famous bronze boar called Il Porcellino Tradition says if you rub its nose you’ll come back to Florence The shiny nose shows how many hands have touched it Covered market stalls bags belts wallets and lots of color Leather bags hanging everywhere one of the classic Florence sights Tourists shopping locals passing through everyone crossing the same market Even if you don’t buy anything it’s fun just to walk through here Between the arches the smell of leather mixes with street life Getting closer to Palazzo Vecchio right ahead of us The closer we get the smaller we feel next to Palazzo Vecchio Now we’re in Piazza della Signoria one of the main squares of Florence These statues on the right belong to the Loggia dei Lanzi a kind of outdoor museum Another reminder that in Florence even the street corners are full of art Heroes myths and battles all carved in stone watching over the square The Loggia was used to show important sculptures to everyone not just to the rich Many of these works were placed here by the Medici family to display power and culture This statue shows the hero Perseus just after cutting off Medusa’s head This David is a replica the original one is kept safe inside the Accademia Gallery Stepping inside for a quick look Inside you find grand rooms full of frescoes and painted ceilings This building was once the seat of government so the inside feels like a palace of power One of the main spaces is the Hall of the Five Hundred a huge decorated hall Back outside again wandering through the streets of Florence Florence’s soundtrack now includes a silent show on the pavement Now we’re walking along the Uffizi corridor one of the most famous galleries in the world These arches belong to the Uffizi Gallery home to some of the greatest Renaissance paintings The Uffizi was created by the Medici family to host offices and later their art collection Inside you can find works by Botticelli Leonardo da Vinci Michelangelo and many others Today it’s one of the most visited art museums in Italy Getting closer to Ponte Vecchio, one of Florence’s most famous bridges You can already feel more light and space as we get near the river Just a few more meters and we’re at Ponte Vecchio The closer we get the more you see how packed the Ponte Vecchio really is One of the most iconic views in Florence just around the corner Walking towards one of those places you recognize even before visiting In a moment we’ll step onto one of the most famous bridges in Italy Ponte Vecchio literally means old bridge It is the oldest bridge in Florence rebuilt in the 1300s The bridge is full of tiny shops mainly gold and jewelry In the past these shops were butchers and tanners not jewelry The Medici ordered the smelly trades to move and replaced them with goldsmiths Above the shops there is a hidden passage the Vasari Corridor The corridor allowed the Medici to walk between palaces without using the street During World War Two this was the only bridge in Florence not blown up The view from the middle of the bridge over the Arno is one of the classic Florence views During the day it is packed with tourists at night it feels much quieter Behind the jewelry windows you sometimes catch quick reflections of the river Even if you don’t buy anything just crossing Ponte Vecchio is a must in Florence At sunset Ponte Vecchio turns into a golden postcard Leaving the bridge behind and heading back into the streets of Florence From river views back to narrow streets and everyday life Turning away from Ponte Vecchio and diving again into the city Now we’re walking along the river towards the next bridge Following the waterline one bridge at a time One of the best ways to explore Florence is just to follow the river Florence is small enough that you can cross the historic center on foot in about 20 minutes One of the best viewpoints of the city is Piazzale Michelangelo up on the hill Across the river the Oltrarno area feels more local and less touristy Florence is famous for dishes like ribollita pappa al pomodoro and lampredotto Lampredotto is a traditional street food sandwich made from cow stomach very local very Florentine Many trattorias serve simple food seasonal ingredients and recipes that haven’t changed for decades The city is packed with small churches and chapels many with hidden masterpieces inside Sometimes a random church doorway hides frescoes sculptures and tombs of important people Florence has a long tradition of craftsmanship especially leather gold and paper In some shops you can still see artisans working by hand in the back rooms The Arno River has caused serious floods in the past leaving marks and signs on walls You can still see plaques showing how high the water reached during the big flood of 1966 Late at night many streets empty out and the monuments feel almost private Spring and autumn are popular seasons to visit with softer light and more comfortable temperatures In the summer Florence can be hot during the day but evenings along the river feel lively Many locals move by scooter or bicycle weaving through the narrow streets Taxis are common at train stations and main squares but most visitors just walk everywhere Florence’s main train station Santa Maria Novella connects the city with Rome Milan and other big cities From Florence you can easily take day trips to places like Pisa Siena or smaller Tuscan towns Street names are often written on old stone plaques attached to the corners of buildings Sometimes the same building shows both the old and the modern street numbering systems Even after seeing the main sights you keep discovering small courtyards arches and views that feel uniquely Florentine Florence’s name in Italian is Firenze The city sits in a basin surrounded by Tuscan hills The Medici family supported artists scientists and architects for generations Florence has its own local wine region just outside the city in Chianti Aperitivo time is big here drinks with small snacks before dinner Dinner usually starts later than in many other countries Some of the shops you pass have been in the same family for decades Now we’re entering Piazza Santa Croce one of Florence’s big open squares The square opens up in front of us with the Basilica of Santa Croce at the end Santa Croce standing right there watching over the whole square This square feels like a mix of everyday life and pure postcard view One of those places where you just want to stop and look around slowly The square is hosting a Christmas market today Locals and visitors walking between the stalls with bags and cups in their hands Santa Croce turns into a little winter village during the market Another side of the city another piazza with its own personality Market stalls people bikes and the church as a backdrop There was a traditional parade crossing the square with people in historic costumes Medieval style outfits drums and flags filling the piazza with sound and color That red flower on the flags is the symbol of Florence the Florentine lily We’re getting close to the end of today’s walk in Florence Thanks for spending this time in Florence
