Koyasan Okunoin: Japan’s Ultimate Power Spot | Autumn Leaves & MysteriousJourney [4K]

Sacred Mt. Koyasan Today, we’ll explore the Okunoin area. This is Mt. Koyasan, located in Koya Town, Ito District, Wakayama Prefecture. This time, we’ll be focusing on the Okunoin area. One of Japan’s most powerful spiritual sites—feel its mysterious energy for yourself. The weather was perfect this time, making for an amazing location. There are lots of shuttle buses, so getting around is very easy. First, we were greeted by beautiful autumn leaves. This is how colorful it looks in early November. This is the entrance to the pilgrimage path. There’s also a lovely temizuya (purification basin). An impressive stone lantern. This is Koyakun, the mascot character. From the side, it looks like a crescent moon. Let’s continue deeper inside. Here’s a monument from Yakult. Is this a rocket? There are many memorial monuments dedicated by various companies. Even a memorial for termites. Fukusuke—the company that makes tabi socks and footwear. And Aderans, famous for hair-growth products. This seems to be a groundwater pumping device. You walk through endless grave sites along the pilgrimage path. A small stream flows nearby, and the air is incredibly fresh. A cute little Jizo statue. The grave of Shinran Shonin, founder of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. A monk from the Kamakura period. Located a bit up the mountain side. Just a short climb completely changes the atmosphere into something very mystical. Look at all that moss—so much history here. It feels like stepping into a fairy tale world. There was a memorial tower for animals. Several animal figurines were placed around. This one is a memorial for Nissan Motor. There are so many unique monuments—it never gets boring. UCC, famous for coffee. Even here, some leaves had turned bright red. A perfect autumn scenery. The autumn leaves are at their peak around the Eireiden area (early November). The building you see ahead is the Eireiden. It was built to honor those who died in World War II. Many visitors were taking photos from this bridge. The sound of the flowing river is so soothing. Another Jizo statue here as well. This is a haiku monument by Hanabishi Achako. The combination of autumn leaves and Mt. Koyasan is breathtaking. Many memorial towers can be found here. This scenery continues as far as the eye can see. They must have stood here for countless years. Huge trees grow in clusters in this area. It feels like something out of a Studio Ghibli film. Trees of all sizes—big and small. Just lowering your gaze reveals an entirely mystical world. There are graves deep along the mountain side as well. Sunlight filtering through feels wonderful. Many monuments stood in a row. This place is called Muen-zuka. It’s a mound for memorializing unclaimed ashes and spirits. It made me feel a bit sad. There were also many Jizo statues beside it. Some wore red hats. Three of them lined up together. Some old items were left scattered around. There is also the Toyotomi family grave. There is also the Toyotomi family grave. A grand grave sits at the top of the stairs. The area is fenced off and entry is prohibited. Everywhere you go, the mystical atmosphere continues. It truly never gets old to look at. The Matsudaira family grave of Hizen-Shimabara. And this is the Maeda family grave, known for ruling the Kaga domain. This is called a Sekibyo. A structure made of stone used as a grave or a place to enshrine spirits. Let’s keep going. The grave of Maeda Toshinaga’s wife. These are the adorable “Friendly Jizo.” This one is called the “Makeup Jizo.” Legend says applying makeup to this Jizo will make you beautiful. The grave of Tokugawa Hidetada’s wife. There is also a grave of Oda Nobunaga. It was smaller than the Toyotomi grave, and I could walk up close to it. Huge trees stand everywhere in this area. This mystical atmosphere is moving, no matter the season. Each monument carries its own history. Many of the stone monuments are covered with moss. I wonder how many years they’ve been here. Filming was prohibited inside the main hall. This is the area with the Mizumuke Jizo. The proper ritual is to pour water onto the memorial tablets at the statue’s feet. It represents honoring ancestors and cleansing one’s own impurities. Perhaps monks once trained here. It feels very sacred. You can purchase amulets and charms in this area. I bought a candle. Light it and offer it. Is this Daikokuten? Autumn leaves were beautifully colored throughout the entire area. How did you enjoy this tour of Mt. Koyasan? I’m glad I could capture the autumn scenery on camera. If there’s anywhere else you’d like me to visit, feel free to comment. Wishing everyone a wonderful day.
