Good morning everyone, this is Misako. I’m currently in Karuizawa. In summer, it’s a very famous summer resort for Japanese people. In autumn, it transforms into a different place , attracting many tourists to admire the autumn leaves. So, this video will show you just how beautiful Karuizawa is during the autumn foliage season. In addition to taking you on Karuizawa’s only sightseeing train, “ROKUMON,” this video will also recommend a few spots for viewing autumn leaves, including the Old Karuizawa Station Building Memorial Hall. -The first stop is to take the ROKUMON sightseeing train. I took it both the outbound and return journeys this time. Please note that if you are taking the ROKUMON, after arriving at JR Karuizawa Station, you need to transfer to the Shinano Railway’s Karuizawa Station. The Shinano Railway uses a different passage. This station used to be the old Karuizawa Station, which was demolished when the Shinkansen opened. It was later rebuilt into its current form , but it has retained its elegant and retro feel. You can wait for the train in the lounge on the first floor . If you book a more expensive Japanese or Western-style meal plan, there is another lounge on the second floor. That lounge is converted from the old VIP room and has a lot of furniture designed by Eiji Mitooka. You can go there to have tea and relax before departure and after arriving at Karuizawa Station . If you book a plan without meals , you cannot enter that lounge. Please note this. しなの鉄道ろくもん- Shinano Railway Rokumon train – Ladies and gentlemen, this is the boarding gate for Car 1. Passengers of Car 1, please have your tickets and seat numbers ready for confirmation. You are now aboard the ROKUMON sightseeing train. Before departure, the attendants will blow conch shells, which symbolizes the samurai going into battle in the past. This means that ROKUMON is officially departing. Now let’s talk about the design of this train. You can see that the entire train body is dark red , which is actually taken from the color of the Sanada family’s red armor. The name ROKUMON is also one of the Sanada family crests. The Sanada family crests actually have three : the six-coin (ROKUMON) , the guillotine (a type of gold coin), and the Suhama crest. You can find family crests everywhere on the train, both on the exterior and inside. I think the cutest one is the Suhama crest because it looks like an upside-down Mickey Mouse symbol. This train was also designed by Eiji Mitooka and has three carriages. What’s special is that each carriage uses different types of wood, but all of them are sourced from Nagano Prefecture. The first carriage is made of larch. It’s also a family carriage because it has a specially designed wooden play area for children, and there are children’s books nearby . You have to take off your shoes to get on the first carriage. Another good thing is that if you don’t want to book an expensive package and just want to ride this train , you can book a reserved seat. For adults, it’s an extra 1,020 yen, and for children, it’s an extra 510 yen. This is the second car, which uses cedar wood seats. All seats in the second car face the window , and there are additional partitions compared to the first car, providing more privacy. It offers many single seats , all facing the window, so if you’re traveling alone, this is perfectly fine. Finally, the third car is the compartment I’m currently sitting in. It uses high-grade cypress wood seats, and all are private compartments, each with its own independent Japanese-style sliding door. Once you close the door, you have your own private space where you can luxuriously enjoy your meal while taking in this beautiful view. Look at what’s in front of me… All the meals have been served. I ‘m taking this train both ways. For my outbound journey, I’m in a reserved seat in Car 1, which doesn’t include this set meal. Although it doesn’t come with a meal , you can buy your own food to eat on board , or you can order their 1,500 yen ROKUMON special bento. If you want to order a set meal, the outbound journey is a Western-style meal , and the return journey is a Japanese-style meal . As soon as you board, you’ll be given a welcome drink. This set meal also includes a complimentary drink; you can choose sake, wine , or a non-alcoholic beverage. I chose apple juice . Nagano fruits are very famous , and their cuisine includes white rice.
| Nagano → Karuizawa Japanese Cuisine Menu | Includes miso soup, chawanmushi (steamed egg custard), fruit salad, and many side dishes. All ingredients are sourced from outside Nagano Prefecture. The color combinations in each dish are exquisite. I felt like I was dining at a high-class kaiseki restaurant. The servers kept coming to serve the dishes and even asked if I wanted them to take photos. They served each room individually, so I highly recommend booking Carriage 3 for the same price . Now I’m in Carriage 1 to see what merchandise they have. They sell quite a few badges , including those shaped like the train body and the front of the train. They also have badges with a seaside pattern , which is basically an upside-down Mickey Mouse . I also want to buy a mug shaped like a soup cup. I want this one because I think its deep red color is quite beautiful , and the gold -plated logo gives it a very elegant and sophisticated feel. They also have classic postcards and a limited-edition ROKUMON shichimi tofu (seven-spice powder) package that incorporates Nagano Prefecture’s characteristics. Shichimi tofu is one of the must-buy souvenirs when visiting Nagano . OK I decided what to buy, but then I accidentally bought a drawstring bag at the counter 😝 There were so many patterns, it was hard to choose 😅 One of the fun things about taking the sightseeing train, besides enjoying the scenery along the way, is that it stops at several stations , and each station has its own little highlights. For example, when passing Shinano-Oibachi Station, you can see a spectacular view of Mount Asama. Mount Asama is a very famous active volcano in Japan. If you want to choose a good spot for taking photos, if you’re heading towards Nagano, sit on the right side ; if you’re heading towards Karuizawa, sit on the left side. Then, the Japanese cuisine option stops at Komoro Station. There’s a small garden outside the station where you can take a walk. In addition , if you order a set meal, the staff will give you a voucher , which you can use to redeem a glass of grape juice or a small snack at a designated store. So, what did I choose? I changed to a glass of grape juice because Nagano Prefecture is famous for its grapes, and that grape juice was absolutely delicious. I really wanted to buy a whole can! Both the outbound and return journeys stop at Ueda Station because this station is very important ; it’s the birthplace of the Sanada clan during the Sengoku period. So, when you stop at this station, you can get off , take a commemorative photo with ROKUMON, and grab a souvenir sign. During the stop, there’s also a small vendor selling “Misuzu-ame,” a retro-style fruit jelly dessert that’s only available at Ueda Station. And that’s not all! After departing from Ueda Station, you can see Ueda Castle from the train. Then, at Tokura Station , the staff sells ROKUMON onsen manju (hot spring buns) , which are locally made handmade buns with ROKUMON-exclusive packaging. Finally, after passing Yashiro Station, on the way to the final stop, Nagano Station , you’ll cross an iron bridge and see the Chikuma River, Japan’s longest river. After your meal…
| Nagano → Karuizawa Japanese Cuisine Package Meal Contents | The crew brought out a final dessert, and to top it off, there was even a local specialty – a huge bag of miso! The quantity was truly generous. This train offers three main packages. The first is the cheapest: Reserved Seat Package
① Passport + Reserved Seat Package. Reserved seat fee: Adults 1,020 yen, Children 510 yen. ▸ Available for purchase one month in advance at 10:00 AM. This package doesn’t include the meal ; it’s just a regular train ride. You only need to pay the reserved seat fee to ride in Car 1. You can bring your own bento or order their special bento. Special bento orders must be pre-ordered five days in advance. The second package
② Includes Meal Package (Western/Japanese Cuisine) 18,500 yen for both adults and children. ▸ Available for purchase two months in advance on the 1st. This is the package I tried this time. The outbound journey is a Western cuisine package, and the return journey is a Japanese cuisine package. You can choose between Car 2 or Car 3. There’s also a third package
③ The Ayase Night View Tour is 24,800 yen for adults and children. It went on sale two months ago on the 1st and is an irregularly operated Ayase Night View tour. This tour runs at night and makes a special stop at Ayase Station for about 30 minutes. There is also live music on board. Meals are included. If you are an overseas tourist, you can book through KKday , but KKday only offers Japanese and Western cuisine. So if you want something other than these two, you may need to book directly through the Japanese website. Finally, get a commemorative stamp in Carriage 2! Back to Karuizawa! I got off the train. Happy times always pass especially quickly. The time on the train was really busy! I had to eat, get off to sightsee , and buy souvenirs. It was really busy! After returning to Karuizawa Station, I’m going to continue playing Karuizawa GO! BEB5 Karuizawa by Hoshino Resorts – Today is my second day in Karuizawa. Last night I stayed at the Hoshino Resorts’ “BEB5 Karuizawa”. The reason I chose this hotel is because when people come to Karuizawa, they usually visit two areas: one is near Karuizawa Station, like Kumoba Pond or the old Ginza-dori shopping street; the other is near Naka-Karuizawa Station , which includes the famous Hoshino area, including the Hoshino Resorts hotels and the Yugi-gai town. The Hoshino area is actually quite large. This time I stayed at the most affordable BEB5 hotel. No matter which Hoshino Resorts hotel you stay at, you can explore this area. It’s also very close to Yugi-gai town. In the evening, there are bonfires and lights, and you can also walk a little further to the Tombowoyu hot springs. I think it’s quite convenient. Karuizawa Autumn Leaves Library –
In the northern part of the Hoshino area, there’s a very popular annual Autumn Foliage Library . It features outdoor bookshelves and shelves with hundreds of books, mostly on nature, travel, and art. I personally think it’s quite photogenic because the library is surrounded by red and yellow leaves, creating a beautiful, layered effect . Hoshino Onsen Tombo no Yu – Next to it is Tombowoyu, where you can also soak in the hot springs. At the Tombowoyu counter, there’s a small box for book donations. After you donate, the book will appear at the Autumn Foliage Library. You might even encounter a bear in Karuizawa! 😱 Keraike Ice Rink –
Further into the forest, there’s an ice rink. During the autumn foliage season, they set up an artificial skating area, and the rink is surrounded by autumn leaves, so you can skate while enjoying the scenery. Even if you don’t skate , just admiring the view is wonderful, because there’s a small cafe next door where you can rent skates or order a coffee and spend a lovely, leisurely afternoon facing the view outside. Harunire Terrace – I’m currently in Yugigai Town, a very famous and popular spot in the Hoshino area. Yugigai Town is a wooden shopping street with many shops, such as cafes, restaurants, general stores , and bakeries. I think it’s not actually very large; you can walk through it in a short time. However, there are many outdoor seating areas, and with so many red and yellow leaves to admire and take photos, I think it’s quite worthwhile. For example , there’s a Sawamura Bakery. In the past, many Europeans and Americans came to Karuizawa and treated it as a villa area, bringing with them a lot of European and American culture, including bread culture. So Karuizawa has quite a few famous bakeries. One of the bakeries is Sawamura Bakery . Since Sawamura also has a branch in Tokyo , I don’t think you necessarily have to come here to eat. But there’s one I really recommend: Izumiya. They have a small dessert called “Korokoro Kurumi,” and it’s a flavor that’s only available there. I actually bought one to try. It contains walnuts, almonds, and other nuts , so the texture is quite rich. It’s coated with a thin layer of powdered sugar, so it’s on the sweeter side. This shop is actually a long-established brand in Nagano. This flavor is truly only available in the town of Yukichi. Finally, here’s the shop I’m at now. This shop actually just opened in April 2025. You can order coffee or their crepes. I ordered the sugar and butter crepe, which was already quite sweet and flavorful on its own. It also comes with a side of chilled cream made in Kita-Karuizawa , giving it a slightly salty-sweet flavor, which I thought was pretty good. They also offer takeout crepes, so I would recommend them to anyone who happens to be passing by . – There are two churches in Hoshino that I must mention. One is the Stone Church behind me. It was built to commemorate a thinker named Kenzo Uchimura who once lived in Karuizawa. As you can see from its exterior, it’s quite different from the typical church we’re used to . The entire structure is made of stacked stones with a slightly curved shape, blending naturally into the forest. This is related to the philosophy advocated by Kenzo Uchimura. He advocated a churchless philosophy, believing that nature itself can be a church if one is willing . Photography is not allowed inside the building , but there is a resource room at the back where you can take pictures. It displays some related materials, including some of the tables and chairs Kenzo Uchimura used when he lived in Karuizawa, as well as his Bible from that time. It’s definitely worth a visit. Karuizawa Kogen Church -There ‘s another church with a strong connection to him called Karuizawa Kogen Church. It has a history of over 100 years; Kenzo Uchimura himself once gave a sermon there. The church presents different appearances in different seasons; the winter lighting is incredibly famous. You have to enter a lottery to reserve a spot, and the rules may vary slightly each year. If you’re interested, you can search for it yourself. Regardless of which church it is, it’s a popular place for wedding ceremonies. Today, both sides of the church are open to the public . Normally, both sides are open for visits, but when there are wedding ceremonies, you might not be able to enter. -Kumba Pond -If you’re spending one day at Naka-Karuizawa Station, I ‘ll share some tips on exploring the area around the station on the other day . First, if you’re looking for autumn foliage, the most famous and must-see spot near Karuizawa Station is Kumoba Pond. While it’s quite large , the walking paths are rather narrow and it gets incredibly crowded during peak season. However, the leaves are densely distributed, making it a beautiful spot for photos. Plus, it’s one of the best autumn foliage spots I’ve found, and it’s easily accessible. Although you can take a bus, the service is infrequent, and you have to walk a bit after arriving at the bus stop. Therefore, I recommend cycling. Many people rent bikes directly from the station and ride there. Next is Old Karuizawa Ginza Street.
The second must-see is the Old Karuizawa Ginza Shopping Street, a top -tier tourist attraction with a strong tourist atmosphere. It also has some local Nagano souvenirs. If you stroll around and take photos at your leisure, it will likely take several hours. Finally, there’s the Karuizawa Shaw Memorial Church. – There are two churches
near Karuizawa Station that I’d like to recommend. One is the Shaw Memorial Chapel, which I heard is the oldest church. It was built to commemorate a missionary named Alexander Croft Shaw. When he first came to Karuizawa, he loved the environment and introduced it to his friends. Later, his friends also came to Karuizawa, leading to a rise in missionaries and the construction of more and more churches . – Saint Paul’s Catholic Church. –
Among the many churches in Karuizawa, most are Christian, with only one Catholic church , Saint Paul’s Catholic Church , which has appeared in many literary works. Its exterior is a wooden triangle, and as soon as you walk in, you can feel its strong sense of simplicity and history. These churches are generally free for tourists to enter when there are no wedding ceremonies. If you have some time after visiting these attractions , I recommend a slightly further, less-traveled spot :
Old Usui Pass Viewing Platform. Because it’s located in the mountains , the autumn leaves here bloom a little earlier than in other places . I think the scenery is amazing because you can see spectacular mountain views . Another unique feature is that it’s situated on the border of Nagano and Gunma prefectures , so there’s a sign on the viewing platform where you can take commemorative photos. However, since this attraction is quite far from other major attractions and the shuttle bus service is infrequent , I recommend driving or taking a taxi for convenience. Okay , this video is almost over. I hope you enjoyed this complete guide to Karuizawa . See you on the next trip ! Bye -bye!
