【ゆっくり解説】北海道函館市|世界三大夜景と幕末の舞台・五稜郭

Hokkaido / Hakodate CityHello everyone! This is Yukkuri Reimu and Yukkuri Marisa! Today, I’ll be introducing cities, wards, towns, and villages across Japan. Where are we going today? I’m so excited! This time, I’m traveling to Hakodate City in Hokkaido! Hakodate?! It has a beautiful night view! I’ve been there. Wow, as expected , Reimu. The night view from Mt. Hakodate is famous as one of the three best night views in the world . But Hakodate has so much more to offer besides the night view, right? That’s right! The exotic cityscape, fresh seafood, and the history of the late Edo period are still very much present in the city . I’m looking forward to it! If you haven’t subscribed yet, please do! Now, Reimu, here’s a quiz for you! A quiz? There’s a famous star-shaped historical site in Hakodate. What do you think it was built for? Star-shaped? Um, a castle? Or a park? It ‘s actually a “fortress.” It’s a Western-style fortress built during the turbulent times of the late Edo period to protect against foreign threats ! It’s interesting that the fortress is shaped like a star! I’ll reveal its secrets in detail in the video, so please watch until the end. Now, let’s embark on our journey to Hakodate! time! Basic Information:
Take your time! Take your We’ve arrived at Hakodate,
the gateway to Hokkaido! Wow, you can see the ocean as soon as you leave the station! It has an incredible port-town atmosphere. Hakodate City is a port city located in the southeastern part of the Oshima Peninsula in southern Hokkaido. Its population is about 251,000 ! 250,000!? It’s a bigger city than I thought! It’s the third largest city in Hokkaido, after Sapporo and Asahikawa. With an area of about 678 square kilometers, it’s roughly the same size as Tokyo’s 23 wards. Is it really that big? I thought it was a small port town. In fact, in 2004, it merged with four surrounding towns and villages to form the current Hakodate City. That’s why it’s surprisingly large ! I see. What are the neighboring towns? It borders Hokuto City, Nanae Town, and Shikabe Town. Hokuto City even has a Shinkansen station ! Shinkansen! So, it’s conveniently accessible. Since the Hokkaido Shinkansen opened in 2016, the number of tourists from Honshu has increased. It’s now about four hours from Tokyo, which is great ! So, I’m also curious about the city’s history. History/Origins: The Opening of the Port and the Turmoil of the Late Edo Period
. So , let’s go back in time and look at the history of Hakodate. Has Hakodate always thrived as a port town? Yes, it has. First, let’s explain the origin of the place name. In the 15th century, a man named Kawamura Masayori built a mansion at the foot of Mount Hakodate . A mansion? Something like a castle? That’s right. The mansion was shaped like a box, so it came to be called “Hakodate.” Ah , that’s why it’s “Hakodate.” But why is the character “箱” (box) written here and not “箱” (box)? Actually, the spelling changed from “Hakodate” to “Hakodate” during the Meiji period. Apparently “Hako” had a more prestigious image. Oh , so that was the reason. And the most important event in Hakodate’s history is the Treaty of Peace and Amity between the United States and Japan in 1854, the one when Perry arrived! That’s right! With this treaty, Hakodate (then known as Hakodate) became one of the five open ports, alongside Nagasaki, Shimoda, Kanagawa, and Niigata. In other words, trade with foreign countries began . That’s right. After the port officially opened in 1859, a foreign settlement was established in Hakodate, and Western culture flooded in all at once. That’s why the exotic atmosphere remains today . That’s right. The Motomachi district, lined with churches and Western-style buildings, is a remnant of that. But there have been even more turbulent events in Hakodate’s history, haven’t there? Oh, you know a lot about it. The Hakodate War from 1868 to 1869. The Hakodate War? What happened? During the Meiji Restoration, Enomoto Takeaki and Hijikata Toshizo of the former Shogunate army barricaded themselves in Goryokaku and fought against the new government forces, Hijikata Toshizo! He was the vice-commander of the Shinsengumi, I believe. Hijikata Toshizo was killed in this battle. Hakodate became the final stage in the history of the end of the Edo period, which is kind of sad. But it does give you a sense of the romance of history. By the way, there is a word in the Hakodate dialect called “namara”, which means “very”, right ? Namara? It sounds interesting, doesn’t it? Phrases like “super delicious” and “super cold” are often used in Hokkaido. Locals are also “super proud” of Hakodate’s history. Hakodate was officially established as a city on August 1, 1922. It’s a city with over 100 years of history. Then, in 2004, it merged with the surrounding towns of Esan, Toi, Tonohokke, and Minamikayabe to form the new Hakodate City. Knowing its history changes the way you see the city. Tourist Spots : A Fascinating Tour of Hakodate. Now that we’ve learned about its history, let’s actually tour Hakodate’s famous sites. It’s so exciting ! Where should we go first? Let’s go see the night view from Mt. Hakodate, the symbol of Hakodate ! It’s here! It’s one of the three best night views in the world. From Mt. Hakodate, 334 meters above sea level, you can get a panoramic view of the city. It takes about three minutes by ropeway to reach the top . This photo is amazing! The city is a belt of light. Hakodate has a unique topography, sandwiched between the sea on both sides, right? That’s why you can see a narrow, fan-shaped night view . I see, the topography really makes the night view so beautiful. I’d like to see it in person. In the summer, the fishing lights from squid fishing boats add to the magical scenery. Where are we going next? Goryokaku Park. It’s the star-shaped fortress we asked about in the quiz earlier. Oh , that’s right! I’d like to see it in person . Goryokaku was Japan’s first Western-style star-shaped fortress, completed in 1866. You can get a panoramic view of the beautiful star shape from the adjacent Goryokaku Tower. How tall is the tower? It’s 107 meters high, and from the observation deck you can see not only Goryokaku but also Hakodate city and the Tsugaru Strait . It’s amazing. I heard the cherry blossoms are beautiful in spring. And it’s true! With approximately 1,600 cherry trees in full bloom, it’s Hakodate’s premier cherry blossom viewing spot. The cherry blossoms of Goryokaku, seen from the tower, are truly spectacular. The pink star-shaped structure looks great in photos. And the Motomachi district is also a must-see. It’s an area filled with exotic Western-style architecture. What kind of buildings are there? The former Hakodate Ward Public Hall is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, a beautiful Western-style building built in 1910. Its striking blue-gray and yellow exterior is a stylish touch . Other historic churches include the Hakodate Orthodox Church and the Catholic Motomachi Church. Church-hopping around the area would be fun. The slopes are also famous, with Hachimanzaka in particular being one of Hakodate’s most scenic spots. What kind of slope is it? It’s a slope that leads straight down to the sea, and the view overlooking Hakodate Bay from the top is incredibly beautiful. It’s often used as a filming location for dramas. It’s wonderful! It looks like it would be Instagram-worthy. And the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse is also a must-see. Red Brick Warehouse! There’s one in Yokohama, too. Hakodate’s Red Brick Warehouses are a group of warehouses built during the Meiji era that are now home to shopping malls and restaurants. You can enjoy both shopping and gourmet food. The illuminated warehouses at night are fantastic, and combined with the port’s atmosphere, it creates a romantic atmosphere. It’s perfect for a date. Finally, I’d like to introduce Yunokawa Onsen . Hot Springs! Are there hot springs in Hakodate? It’s a hot spring resort about 15 minutes by car from the city center, or you can also get there by streetcar. It’s a historic hot spring that is said to have opened in 1653. It’s perfect for soothing after sightseeing. There are many facilities that offer day-trip bathing, and there are also foot baths, so you can enjoy it easily. Hakodate has many attractions. Gourmet Food and Specialties Hakodate’s Delicious Temptation Now, after sightseeing, I’m getting hungry. Let’s enjoy Hakodate’s gourmet food! Yay ! Hakodate is known for its seafood, right? Let’s start with the Hakodate Morning Market. It’s a lively market located right next to JR Hakodate Station . There’s a wide selection of fresh seafood lined up. There are about 250 stores lined up, and Hokkaido seafood such as squid, crab, sea urchin, and salmon roe are all lined up. Wow , it looks delicious! I want to try it all . The specialty of the morning market is the “Live Squid Fishing Pond.” Squid fishing? You catch them yourself? That’s right. You can catch squid in the fishing pond, have them filleted on the spot, and eat them . It seems like they’re on a different level of freshness. I want to try it . Hakodate squid is known for being “transparent” and “crunchy.” You can also enjoy “dancing squid” where the suction cups stick to your tongue. Oh , they’re moving? That’s proof that they’re fresh. And speaking of Hakodate, the famous “Hakodate Shio Ramen” is also famous . Shio Ramen! It’s light and delicious. Hakodate ramen is characterized by its clear salt soup, based on pork bones and chicken bones. The noodles are often thin and straight, and the simplicity of the soup really brings out the flavor of the ingredients. Next up is Hakodate’s soul food, the Lucky Pierrot hamburger. Lucky Pierrot? What a cute name. It’s a local hamburger chain based in Hakodate. The most popular item is the “Chinese Chicken Burger.” Chinese Chicken? What does it taste like? It’s fried chicken seasoned with a sweet and spicy sauce sandwiched between two buns. It’s made to order, so it’s piping hot and delicious. It ‘s junk food, but you can really feel the local love. And another thing you can’t miss is the “Yakitori Bento” from Hasegawa Store. Yakitori Bento? Is it a convenience store bento? Hasegawa Store is a convenience store that originated in Hakodate, and this “Yakitori Bento” is super popular. What kind of bento is it? The nori bento has three skewers of grilled pork on it. And it’s called “yakitori,” but it’s pork!? Yakitori, but it’s pork ? In Hokkaido, pork is the standard for yakitori. This is the Hakodate way . Conventional wisdom differs depending on the region. It’s interesting. You can choose the type of skewer, as well as the offal and vegetables. It’s customizable. For souvenirs, the famous “cheese omelet” is… Cheese omelet? What kind of treat is it? It’s the signature product of a Hakodate pastry shop called Snaffles, and it’s known for its fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth texture. It looks delicious! I want to buy some as a souvenir. Other popular Hakodate specialties include Trappist cookies and kelp products . Hakodate is a treasure trove of gourmet food. I’d probably get fat if I ate it all. The joy of traveling is eating delicious food, after all. Let’s have fun! What kind of gourmet food would you like to try in Hakodate? Let me know in the comments! Culture & Traditions Hakodate in Every Season Hakodate has various events and attractions for each season, so you can enjoy it throughout the year. In spring, the cherry blossoms at Goryokaku Park are the highlight. Early May is the best time to see them, with about 1,600 cherry trees in full bloom . Those cherry blossoms we mentioned earlier. The pink star-shaped blossoms are truly beautiful . You can also enjoy cherry blossoms in Hakodate Park. This park is a popular place for local residents to relax, so I’d love to go cherry blossom viewing . In the summer, the Hakodate Port Festival is held in early August . What kind of festival is it? It’s a traditional festival that has been held since 1935, and features a parade and fireworks display with about 20,000 participants . 20,000 people!? That’s an impressive scale! There’s a dance called the Hakodate Port Dance, where people parade through the city dancing songs like the Ika Dance and Hakodate Ondo. Ika Dance! It’s typical of a squid town. Fireworks displays are also popular, with fireworks launched over the harbor lighting up the night sky and sea. Hakodate is also lively in the summer. The Hakodate Marathon is held in July, and the course that goes around the city is popular. Marathon! It looks like you can run while enjoying the scenery . In autumn, the autumn leaves at Miharashi Park are beautiful. The best time to see them is from late October to early November. You can also enjoy the autumn leaves . Miharashi Park has a Japanese garden called Kosetsuen, which is lit up during the autumn foliage season. The illuminated autumn leaves must be fantastic. And in winter, the “Hakodate Christmas Fantasy” is held from early December to the 25th. Christmas! It’s romantic. A giant Christmas tree is set up on the sea in front of the Red Brick Warehouse, and a lighting ceremony is held every day. A floating tree on the sea? It looks so beautiful! Every year, our sister city, Halifax, Canada, sends a real fir tree to Hakodate, and it grows into a giant tree about 20 meters tall. It ‘s a symbol of international exchange . They also hold an event called “Goryoboshi no Yume” (Dream of the Goryoboshi) from December to February. Goryoboshi? You mean Goryokaku? That’s right. The moat of Goryokaku is lit up in the shape of a star with about 2,000 light bulbs. Wow , I want to see it! It’s so magical! Looking down from Goryokaku Tower, you can see stars of light surrounded by snow. Hakodate in winter is also fascinating. Hakodate is a city you can enjoy all year round. Which season would you like to visit? Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter are all great. Modern Initiatives: Looking to the Future Finally, I’d like to introduce some modern initiatives in Hakodate. What is Hakodate focusing on now? Hakodate is facing the challenge of population decline. At its peak in 1980, it had a population of about 320,000, but now it’s down to about 250,000 . It’s declining. Why? The main causes are the outflow of young people from Hokkaido and a declining birthrate and aging population. However, the city is focusing on encouraging relocation and settlement. What exactly are they doing? They’ve launched a relocation promotion website called “Living in Hakodate,” which provides information on housing and jobs. They also regularly hold relocation consultation sessions, which is encouraging for those looking to relocate. In terms of tourism, they’re promoting wide-area tourism by taking advantage of the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen. What’s changed since the Shinkansen arrived? Access from Honshu has improved dramatically, and the number of tourists from the Tokyo metropolitan area has increased. With the upcoming extension to Sapporo, further development is expected. It looks like things will only get more exciting from now on . Hakodate is also focusing on “historical urban development .” Historical urban development is an initiative to preserve and utilize historical buildings while maintaining attractive cityscapes. The Western-style buildings and red brick warehouses in the Motomachi district are part of this. They’re cherishing history while also creating new attractions . That’s right . Hakodate is a city that connects the past, present, and future. Ending : Well, our trip to Hakodate is almost over. How was your trip, Reimu? Hakodate is a fascinating city not only for its night view, but also for its history, cuisine, and culture. The history of the late Edo period, the exotic atmosphere, the fresh seafood, and the seasonal events. Hakodate is truly a city with many attractions. I was particularly impressed by the beauty of Goryokaku’s star shape and the deliciousness of the squid. Goryokaku is a place that has watched over turning points in Japanese history. It feels so heavy. I’d like to try Lucky Pierrot’s hamburger, and I’m also curious about the yakitori bento. The soul food loved by the locals is the real joy of traveling. Where in Hakodate would you like to go? Let me know in the comments . Do you prefer the night view of Mt. Hakodate? Or Goryokaku? Do you prefer gourmet food at the morning market? I’d love to hear everyone’s opinions. If you have any memories of Hakodate, please let me know in the comments. This channel will introduce 1,741 cities, wards, towns and villages across Japan, so please subscribe. If you press the like button, it will encourage me to make the next video . I wonder which city I should go to next. I hope you’ll look forward to it. Well then , that was it. That was it .

  1. 25万人いたのってもう6年とか前のことだったはず。今は23万人弱。市の予算も無い・働き口も無い。隣町とかの方が補償とかもいいし。
    確か2030年の人口予想が20万人切るのでは?とか騒がられてたな。
