ヘラクリオンのギリシャストリートフード🇬🇷ラムアンティクリスト+ヨーロッパ最高のオーガニックレストラン – クレタ料理
Welcome to Heraklion. The biggest city in Crete and an absolute hotspot for some of the best food on the island. In this video, I’m taking you through a buzzy morning market. Then to a 100 year old shop serving what might just be the best loukumades you’ll ever taste. Best loukumades I’ve ever tried. We’ll finally make it to the legendary Peskesi crowned the best organic restaurant in Europe. Oh, what are we talking about? Look, super tender. And to wrap things up, we’re heading to a village tavern for some of the most incredible lamb you’ll ever try. Get ready. You’ve officially entered food paradise. Buongiorno, guys is Max Ginestra. We made it to Heraklion, Crete. The largest city on the island. I’m super pumped first time here. It’s going to be an epic series
going from Heraklion to Chania. Oh, I’m starving. I’m very, very excited. And I can’t wait to share everything with you. Andiamo! All right. We made it to the local morning market, which happens only on Saturday, it’s already very busy and lively. Make sure to come early in the morning to get the freshest produce. So, how it works people come from the village
to bring their own stuff. You got lots of produce that are unique to Crete. Let’s take a look around and see what this market has to offer. But as you can see, fruits, vegetables, local cheese, olives And look at that.
They sell honey, most likely from the village. Oh.. zucchini flower.
Fried zucchini flower and you stuffed it. It’s the best. Of course, there are a lot of tomatoes for salads. This gentleman here is the King of Olives. The middle one, that one there I really love it. It’s a little bit bitter and salty. And also they have they make their oil, the extra virgin olive oil. Nice.
Right from Crete. We’ve got some olives. Oh, by the way, this gentleman is super popular. Everyone knows him by name. If you come to this market come to this shop. Well, you’ll see it.
He’s the olive king Oh, Philippos. Easy. All right, let’s continue. We found some seafood, guys. Super fresh, of course. This city is by the water. This must be the fresh catch of the day. They’re really famous for this sardines. They fried them. They got prawns as well. Oh, we got more.
We’ve got some serious stuff here. Bigger fish. It’s always nice to see the fish market. There is something special about fish because there’s so much hard work in catching fish that makes you appreciate even more. Let’s continue. We just stopped here to this stall. It’s a family run business.
They are super sweet. We just bought this balsamic cream with raspberry. It’s illegal.
You can put them on cheese and in salads. Thank you so much. Cheers. Yes, cheers! -My friend, one moment. So nice.
Okay, okay. The father is a character.
So nice. Eat the raisins together with the walnuts. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. He’s the king. He knows this stuff. They are so good together. -The walnuts go with sweets like honey and we usually eat it at the wedding. Oh, yeah? So to bless the marriage. Thank you so much. Have a great day. Hopefully we will send lots of people here. Thank you. Bye bye. They are so sweet. Ragazzi, unexpectedly, we found this souvlaki stall right
in the middle of the market. We saw a couple of tables and I said, wow, there’s some people eating souvlaki. Let’s join them. We got souvlaki, pork souvlaki and a lamb souvlaki. I never tried the lamb one. Okay, let’s try. Oh! It’s super tender. Juicy and tender with herbs inside. Oh, what a surprise! We did not expect actually to find food. This is super nice. A massive surprise. Now, let’s go for the pork one. This is just a classic You can’t go wrong with pork souvlaki. But I have to say, the lamb one was unbelievable. Fresh bread, freshly grilled souvlaki in the middle of the market, Saturday market. Make sure to come between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. because it gets very busy. The market is amazing, so lively, fresh local produce from the villages, from Crete. Amazing. Ragazzi, we made it to a local Kafeneio. Kafeneio is a place where people have drinks like raki, wine or beer, and they have some food, some meze. It depends on what’s available. We’ve been given some cheese and we didn’t even order it. They really wanted us to try some local speciality. This is a Cretan cheese. This is a salad It’s called Rafano. Then we didn’t order any of this This is pork cooked in white wine. This is I believe chicken. with okra and tomato. We have white wine. Let’s pour some for me and my beautiful wife. And now, we’re waiting for the star. So we ordered a.. an omelette with potatoes.. it is absolutely ginormous. We heard it’s famous here. The table behind us ordered one and it’s huge. Way bigger than I thought it was going to be. And what else? We are in a local neighbourhood 20 minutes by walk from the city centre Super nice, local Full of pictures, family pictures. This is super cozy, super local. As soon as we entered, it’s like, Oh my God, everyone is staring at us but everyone is super friendly, the owner is so sweet. It’s just breaking the ice that looks worrying, but it’s not. I want to start with the pork here. Super tender pork. Buon appetito A bit lemony as well. Let me try with some bread This is nice. So kind of them Now, let’s try the cheese. This reminds me of Pecorino. Wow. Oh, yeah. It reminds me of Pecorino. It’s perfect..nice and salty. Local Cretan cheese I almost forgot about the alcohol, which is the main thing in this kind of places. House white…Alla Salute! Cheers. Boom. You know what I like about this house white here in Greece? They’re easy drinking. Smooth. And so light and not too heavy. Now, let’s try.. Oh, my God. So tender. Let’s try chicken with okra. Nice touch of acidity, sweetness from the tomatoes. Mega tender, the okra is nice. Come to this places. You get to try dishes that maybe you never tried before. You have a local experience. You just need to step out of the comfort zone, come to these places. Trust me, you’ll feel very welcome. And yeah, we’re loving it. I almost forgot. We ordered beef meatballs. Nice. Super hot, super crunchy. Oh, let’s try. With onion and herbs. Buon appetito Citrusy, herbal, you can taste the onions, there’s a little bit of fat in it. Really nice, cooked to perfection. Look how juicy. Mamma mia Look at the juice. Piping hot because we just received them. Oh, so nice! Everything is good. Perfect Let’s try this salad too Cabbage Really nice.. Oh, the oil makes a difference. Thank you Mamma mia! Look at this monster. Look at this. A massive omelette with potatoes. Actually, it took them a while to make. This is a masterpiece. Look in this Oh, thank you so much. It looks good Potatoes, egg and we will find out. Are you ready? Doctor, let’s go for the incision. Let’s open. Everything covered. Mamma mia. It’s massive. Just potatoes and eggs.. straightforward. Let’s try it out. You know what? Nice and simple, but what you really want is egg and potato. Maybe butter. But what’s nice is that crunchy layer outside, it’s like the skin on top. They made it nice and crunchy. It’s a very nice thin layer that as soon as you bite into it, you get that crunch. Nice! For a potato addict like me.. This is heaven What a masterpiece! Simple yet delicious because I love it. Amore, you will absolutely love it. It’s very good. Thank you so much to you. Here we are, small dishes.. We’ve got this massive omelette with potato and housewhite wonderful hospitality Thank you very much. All the best. All the rest. Thank you. Ragazzi, Mamma mia. What an experience! Here, officially, we found a super hidden gem Came and pay a visit Kostas Eleftherios and Maria will be ready to welcome you. It’s a place that has been operating for 40 years. They also offered as a Raki, even other customers offered us Raki. I’m tipsy, Sherly as well. Super happy amazing food, great hospitality. What a gem. And this is a very local neighbourhood. Peaceful, nice, people bring their dogs, they smoke inside. It’s just super cool and chill. Having said so, we’re going for a walk and definitely a coffee because I need to digest, and then we’ll go for dinner. Let’s go Hello, guys! Amore mio How are you? I’m good. Are you enjoying Heraklion? Yeah, it’s nice, full of tourists. Full of tourists, super crowded. It’s like a mini Athens. Yeah, it’s quite a big city. Now we are in this beautiful square where at the centre there is this marvellous Venetian fountain. Morosini fountain. This is one of a must-thing to do in Heraklion. So you come to the square, you get your Freddo espresso, or a freshly squeezed orange juice and you do some people watching. Cheers. Cheers Enjoy. Oh now, let me show you where we are. So this is the beautiful fountain. There are lots of people and cafes and this is the main attraction here, of course, the sea as well. So now we want to go for lunch to a very famous restaurant. Unfortunately, I made a.. I made a mistake. I haven’t made any reservation. Sorry amore I didn’t know it was.. It was going to be that busy. We want to try in an hour. (to potentially find a table) If not I have a plan B. In the meantime, we’re going to enjoy this and judge people For lunch, we made it to the number one restaurant. in Heraklion Peskesi, awarded as the best organic restaurant in Europe. Did you hear that? The best organic restaurant in Europe. From farm to table, this is the best representation of Cretan food. We checked the menu. Thanks to our waiter Cosmos, we managed to pick probably the best from the traditions. All ancient recipes. One more tip for you guys. Make sure to make a reservation because otherwise you won’t be able to find the table here. The atmosphere is great. Nice music. Great seating and I cannot wait to try the food and I’ll share a little bit more about this place. Here it is certified by Demeter, it’s made from our farm, so there are small batches. You’ll feel it like a little bit more pungent because it gives a nice pungent profile in the end. And the best way to have it is put a little bit of bread This is from Cosmos and also this is a beetroot salad with yoghurt and garlic olive oil. Thank you so much. Hopefully you heard some of the explanation of the waiter. They have their own farm and everything is certified. So here we just been served extra virgin olive oil. Very romantic, homemade bread. Here we have beetroot puree and garlic olive oil. He said that we should start with the olive oil and then we jump onto the puree. It’s raining, just started raining, but we’re optimistic. Hopefully it’s going to stop By the way, the waiter is our subscriber. And he kindly offered us the bread with olive oil. Let’s start. Oh, my God. The bread feels so good. Wow., okay, let’s dip it in. He said that is pretty pungent. Oh, yeah. Oh, wow! It almost has a hint of spiciness which I love. And the bread, mamma mia, the bread is illegal. Super fresh with sesame. Mamma mia! Oh, thank you very much. So as you speak, everything is coming to the table. So we’ve been recommended this salad because this restaurant has a seasonal based menu so they make and serve whatever is in season and the salad is the best representation they have right now with all the veggies they grow in their farm together with this bread, which is very traditional from Crete, It’s made of.. rye. Okay? And then this on top, which I believe is Cretan cheese. Okay, let’s try the beetroot pure with garlic olive oil. Mamma mia, this one looks good. Addictive, super creamy, garlicky, acidic This is addictive. I need a kilo of this. Mamma mia, where can I find this? I want this. I’ll them some takeaway. Now let’s try the salad. We’ve been moved inside because it just started raining but maybe it’s temporary. Let’s try the salad. We’ve been told that we need to mix it. We’ve got the bread, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, olives, extra virgin olive oil, onions, capers as well. Let’s put some on my plate. The music is insanely loud. Hopefully no copyright. To me, it’s all about the extra virgin
olive oil, it’s unbelievable. It takes over the flavour. This bread is fantastic. Completely soaked olive oil and tomato juice. Everything is so fresh. I love the cheese. You can taste the capers, they’ completely pop your mouth. It’s a nice salad, everything comes from their farm. We just received another entree. Grilled Katsohiri cheese, of course, local cheese. Nice melt in your mouth crispy cheese. Let’s get one. The smell is amazing. It smells smoked. Buon appetito Wow, it’s a very strong cheese Sour, almost as strong as a blue cheese, a bit smoky somehow and I love that crispy layer on top. Look, can you hear? This is really nice. Let’s squeeze some lemon on the cheese. It looks so satisfying. Still piping hot. Actually, with lemon, it’s really good. It cuts a bit of the greasiness and how strong the cheese is. I prefer with the lemon, actually. And so far so good. From the olive oil to bread, the beetroot with pure with the garlic olive oil. This salad is unbelievable. The grilled cheese, the place is amazing. Even though, you know, the weather is not on our side but who cares. It’s about the atmosphere, the food, the people, everything is great. We just received our mains and look at this masterpiece, slow cooked pork belly with carrots and legumes pure. Look at this. It looks like it will dissolve in my mouth completely. I’m super excited. Second main beef, slow cooked as well served with eggplants and smoked eggplant puree and you can see some onion here. We haven’t had beef in a while as far as I remember. They recommended to us a few dishes that are quite popular but also very traditional. Now let’s try the pork belly first. Let’s try to cut a piece. Oh, mamma mia. Oh yeah, tender..attenzione! Super tender. Oh, yes. Let’s get both purees. Buon appetito. Incredible. Second time. Unbelievable. Unbelievable. Completed dissolves in your mouth There is sort of a think layer on top. Then the carrot puree is elegant, sweet and there is also the legume puree which is thicker, nice and comforting. Oh, what are we talking about? Look, super tender. What a dish Slow cooked Slow cooked. I don’t know how many hours but to make it this tender It has to be 3 to 6 hours. Wow. I love the puree as well. Nice contrast because the pork can be very salty. Then you want to contrast the sweetness from the carrot puree. The jus, it is very well-balanced. And this is the number one recommendation. I made a mess, I know, but this was to show you how tender the pork was. Incredible, really. Now, let’s try the beef with eggplant. Smoked eggplant puree. Look at this. Wow. Very tender as well. We’re talking about ancient recipes that have been kept for hundreds of years, centuries, generations. Wow. Wow. Here we’re making history. This place is making history. I was about to swear. This hit the spot. This hit the spot. I can taste wine immediately. This is like an Italian Spezzatino, pieces of beef, slow cooked. You add wine After many hours when you cut it well, first of all, you don’t need the knife. It’s very tender. This place is keeping traditions alive. Really Kudos to the chefs. Oh, the puree with onion, a bit of tomato, wine. Let’s try the eggplants super creamy. Wow, this was a hit. If the previous dish was insane, I think this is my favourite. Mamma mia. What a meal we are having. From the starters, the bread, the olive oil, the hospitality, the salad, oh, the salad. We’re talking about a salad. They took the salad to another level. The mains, the cheese I’m super happy. I’m super, super happy. Tip, as I told you before, make a reservation because otherwise you won’t be able to.. to find that table. Ragazzi, our meal hasn’t finished yet. We got two desserts. Halva made the traditional way with semolina flour, extra virgin olive oil, cinnamon and nuts. Over here. Look. Cheesecake made with rusk biscuit at the bottom, Cretan cheese, strawberries from their farm and homemade strawberry jam. Beautiful. Mamma mia. Oh, and let’s start with the halva Let’s get some nuts. Sweet, granular. It’s a lot different than other Halva that I tried before. It’s very nice. Oh, with a hint of caramelised orange skin. Really nice touch. Now, the star, cheesecake. Mamma mia, mamma mia! Let’s try to get everything. Yes, let’s go for it. Sweetness, sourness and the rusk biscuit on the bottom. Maybe there is a bit of salt and olive oil. What a nice contrast. And the cheese is nice and creamy Wow, the biscuit crumbles in your mouth. Wow. And the strawberry. What an explosion of flavours. Super fresh. Looks good. It’s all about the freshness of the ingredients and all the textures, it’s super refreshing. It’s actually not heavy. Oh, Amore, you better have some before I finish it. Sherly loves cheesecake. With this one, we are touching the sky, guys. Touching the sky. What a meal. What a restaurant, what an experience. This is an experience. It’s not just a meal. Mamma mia. Peskesi If you come to Heraklion, put it on top of your list. Mamma mia. This is an institution. We made it to any institution to have Loukoumades beautifully made by the master over there. You see the dough, fresh dough. Then he makes the bowls, throws them in the very hot soup. When they’re ready, he pours a lot of sugar. And then he sprinkles on top maybe some nuts or sesame because the smell is incredible. Almost like toasted. Thank you, chef. Amazing. thank you. Wow. Mamma mia Mamma mia, the smell. Incredible. Look at this. And then he really wanted us to try Bougatsa. Bougatsa with cream. Actually, we had Bougatsa only once years ago in Athens but we had it with cheese so this one is with cream then he sprinkled some sugar and cinnamon. So as I was saying this place is an institution opened since 1922, specialised in Loukoumades, I bet even in Bougatsa and all sorts of pies. Amazing, super excited, hungry And let’s go for it. Let’s start with the Bougatsa first
because it looks very tempting The cream. It’s all about the cream. It’s all about the cream. Sweet, but not too much It doesn’t overpower the flavour profile. Nice touch, of course, from the cinnamon on top. Still warm Bougatsa no doubt is one of those pies you cannot go wrong with here in Greece. Now, the final boss, Loukoumades. Let’s rehydrate it. Mamma mia, the amount of syrup. Mamma mia. Unbelievable Okay, let me try another one. Look at the amount on nuts. It smells and tastes toasted Best Loukoumades I’ve ever tried Done.. Said Best Loukoumades I’ve ever had. Unbelievable, incredibly elegant, delicate, crunchy, fluffy, airy with nice toasted sesame. Shockingly amazing. I need to tell the chef. Chef. Very good. The best, the best. Mamma mia! The best. Unbelievable. I’ve had Loukoumades in the past. I’ve always liked them. Of course, we’ve had different types, you know, with their own peculiarities. But this one, according to me, this is my favourite Since 1922 103 years This is not a joke. Ragazzi, we finished everything, it was super delicious. Amore, a couple of words from your side. Tell us So good. Oh, you heard it right? Super delicious, generous portion, top quality. And also what I want to say, it is a family run business since 1922. Come and support the locals. Look, classic shop, very simple setup, 10 minutes away from the city centre by walk. It is absolutely amazing, top hospitality. And after this we’re going for a nice meal. To end this first video here in Crete, we made it to a very local village tavern for a specific reason, to have the famous Antikristo. Beautiful. My God, this is huge. Look at this. This is the famous Antikristo, grilled lamb over charcoal. We are deep in the village and this is the reason why so many people come here for. Unbelievable. Look at that! Top quality meat. Lamb, the meat by the bone is absolute insane. And we’re going to give it a taste. Look at that, crispy pork belly. Mamma mia! Oh, we’re going to have a feast today. Thank you. Thank you. Mamma mia, look at the lamb. Oh. Oh, God bless the lamb. Wow, this is fantastic. Wow. Look at… Look at the crispy skin. Oh, yes, yes, yes. This is what I’ve been dreaming about. Slow cooked lamb on charcoal by the master right there. The famous Cretan Antikristo. Over here, we have two entrees, grilled mushrooms with a few leaves, very popular, and this one. Oh, as soon as I saw it on the menu, I said, Oh, my God, I need to get it. This is feta cheese wrapped in pastry served with sesame and honey, I believe. I never seen anything like that. It looks fantastic. What a feast we’re about have. It was so unexpected that the owner invited us inside the kitchen and the chef was super excited to show us the Antikristo, the lamb and the pork belly, because they also make pork belly. Oh, wow. And it made me even hungrier. So let’s eat. I really want to start with feta cheese Let me show it to you What a beauty! Let’s rehydrate it. Oh, yes. Oh, buon appetito. What are we talking about? I have no words to describe it. Unbelievable! Fried, so the cheese is warm and almost kind of melt in your mouth. Then the pastry, thin and super crispy, and then the honey which is hot and gives a nice layer of sweetness. Super perfect! This is a mix between savoury entree and a dessert. What a dish. What a dish. Ladies and gentlemen, what an entree. Now. Mushrooms, grilled mushrooms. I love mushrooms so much. Juicy! A bit crunchy, smoky. Oh, it’s like there is a bit of mustard maybe. Oh yeah, maybe they put some mustard in the salad. Oh, yeah. Oh, oh, this is nice. I think they added Dijon mustard, which is a nice touch. The moment has come. Someone has to do it. What a sacrifice. Beautiful lamb. Look in the layer of fat, look. Look I just want you to see and admire. Wow! Pure flavour of the meat, not additives whatsoever Oh, the quality of the meat is unbelievable. This is even better because it’s fatty, it completely explodes in your mouth. Oh, this one explodes in your mouth. Just a little bit salty, I think, as I said, probably a million times Lamb is probably together with pork my favourite meat. Amore.. The quality is insane. Slow cooked, cooked to perfection. Juicy Tender, top quality. It doesn’t get any better than that. We are deep in the village. It’s a local tavern. This place has $1,000,000 view, during the day is absolutely stunning. Wow. I think we found the right spot. Ragazzi we just finish our meal, it was absolutely fantastic. The cheese was insane. Super satisfying. Melt in your mouth, sweet and sour with the crispy pastry. Wow The mushrooms, well, even Sherly approved was unbelievable. What a salad and the meat. Some of the best meat ever. Juicy, tender. Oh, I’m still salivating. What an introduction to Cretan food This series is going to be Epic! Now not done yet. We just received a dessert from the house. We got a chocolate cake with ice cream, got some watermelon as well. And of course, to digest everything, Raki. Now, let’s try to get ice cream and.. I got both. The cake is mega soaked in chocolate. Wow, there is a of cake in that chocolate. Look at the amount of chocolate. But ice cream cuts the sweetness. I always like to finish my meal with a dessert Now, oh my God, a bit of Raki. This is to you, to my community, to all the Greek people that we met along the way this series once again, is going to be epic From Heraklion to Chania going through the villages, small little towns, village taverns. We’re going to have a lot of fun. Cheers. Alla salute! Oh, amazing.

Kudos is actually a Greek word…
Thank you for going to Greece and tasting Greek food. In my view Greek is the best food in the world – if you try authentic Greek food which I believe you have from some restaurants. There’s a restaurant in Greece in Chanua that they have their own goats and lamb for customers and it’s so beautiful
Finally you visited my hometown. Hope you enjoyed it. 🫶
