続日本100名城 米子城 海を臨む天空の城 鳥取県 Yonago Castle 2025
Today, we’re heading to Yonago Castle in Tottori Prefecture. Yonago Castle is famous for its spectacular views from the main keep. It’s about a 15-minute walk from JR Yonago Station. Construction of Yonago Castle began around 1591 under the command of Yoshikawa Hiroie. It’s said to have been completed around 1602 by Nakamura Kazutada. It was once a magnificent castle with a five-story keep and a four-story secondary keep. We’ll enter through the main gate. Due to maintenance work, we can only go partway from this route. It’s now a masugata gate. The masugata gate was also used as a gathering place for samurai. We’ll continue through the Ninomaru. Right in front of us is the former Obara family tenement gate. Today, we were off-limits. It’s said to be the only samurai building remaining in the city. We ‘ll head back and head up the back path to the castle. We’ve arrived at Mifune Castle on the south side of the castle. We’ll go back a little and walk along Minatoyama. There’s a back path. We’ll start climbing from here. We arrived below the Mizute-gomon Gate. This is the Mizute-gomon Gate, the back entrance. The stone walls are built differently on the left and right. We went up to the upper level from the remains of the Kabuki-gomon Gate. The view of Lake Nakaumi below was amazing. You can also get a good view of downtown Yonago. This is the main castle tower base. The foundation stones remain. The mountain you can see ahead is Mt. Oyama. Next, we went to the four-story tower base. The stone in the corner is called the Wasureishi (forgotten stone). We went down the iron gate. There was a sturdy gate clad in iron here. The four-story tower base seen from below. We continued along the stone wall. We went to the remains of the lower guardhouse. There was a government official’s office here. We can’t go there today, but there is a climbing stone wall below. This is the climbing stone wall I photographed a long time ago. It extends toward the main castle. It is a four-tiered stone wall. The lowest one seems to have been built during the time of the Yoshikawa clan. We walked around the main castle. This is the remains of the Tominagara (lookout tower ). A single- story tower and a double-story tower were built here. We’re back at Kabuki-mikado. Thank you for watching.

What a stunning, rare find! My wife and I missed this walk when we visited Matsue Castle last spring. Yonago is officially being added to our travel plans for April! (I can tell from your video that there is night illumination.)
