Logroño is the capital of La Rioja, one of Spain’s smallest autonomous communities, but also one of its most flavorful! 🍷 With a population of around 152,000, it’s a medium-sized city, peaceful yet vibrant. Every year, more than 60,000 pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago pass through Logroño on their way to Compostela. 🥾 We arrive at the San Millán de la Cogolla Foundation, a place that safeguards the history of the Spanish language. 📜 La Rioja is the birthplace of the Castilian language; the first known words in both Castilian and Basque were written here. 📜 That’s why this land not only gave flavor to Spain… it also gave it its language. We enter the legendary Calle Portales, the backbone of Logroño’s old town. A walkway through history beneath these centuries-old arcades! 🕰️ For centuries, this was the main street where merchants, nobles, and pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago gathered. 🥾✨ We can already see the Co-Cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda, the Baroque and Gothic jewel of the old town. 🌟 Its construction began in the 16th century, on the site of an earlier temple, and took more than 200 years to complete. 🕰️ The name of this street comes from these “portales,” or stone arcades, that protected residents from the sun and rain. Because the interior houses three naves and several altarpieces, including masterpieces of 17th-century sacred art. 🎨 This is where the Rastro de Logroño flea market takes place, a space where the tradition of the street market remains alive and vibrant. 🎪 It’s held every Sunday and is the perfect place to find antiques, clothing, books, and curiosities of all kinds. 📚👗 It’s a corner that reflects the barter culture and urban life of Logroño. 🔄 Logroño is a city with centuries of history, located on the banks of the Ebro River. 🌊 Its strategic location made it a crossroads and a center of medieval trade. From the 9th century, Logroño grew as a fortified town. 🏰 Walls and towers protected its inhabitants from invasions and border conflicts. The city was key to the Reconquista and later to the development of the Camino de Santiago. 🥾 Pilgrims arrived from France and other parts of Europe. Before us stands the majestic Post Office Palace, an architectural gem from the early 20th century. ✨ Its Neo-Baroque style and imposing façade captivate at first glance. For decades, this building was the heart of Logroño’s communications. 📮 Today, it functions as the Áurea Palacio de Correos Hotel, lovingly restored with respect for its history. Inside, there is a permanent exhibition of stamps and antique letters— small paper treasures that tell stories from all over La Rioja. ✉️ Next, we visit the Old Chimney of the Tobacco Factory, an industrial symbol of Logroño that silently recounts part of the city’s modern history. It bears witness to a time when the city smelled of work, tobacco, and effort. The factory opened in 1889 and operated for over a century, until its closure in the 2000s. Here we have the fun-loving “Marchosos,” one of Logroño’s most beloved sculptures. The name “Marchosos” comes from the local expression “tener marcha,” meaning to be cheerful, lively, and full of life. 💃 This building was originally a 19th-century prison, sensitively and respectfully converted into a cultural space. 🏛️➡️🎭 In front of us is the Revellín Wall, a medieval defense that protected the city for centuries. 🏰 Right next to it is the Centenary Man of the Tobacco Factory, a statue that seems to stop time. ⏳ It represents veteran workers, witnesses to a century of change and effort. 🧱 In front of us stands the Parliament of La Rioja, the seat of political life for the autonomous community. This wall was part of the 16th-century defensive system and was key during the famous Siege of 1521 against the French. ⚔️ The Revellín Tower is the most emblematic tower of the wall. Baldomero Espartero was President of the Council of Ministers of Spain and a hero during the First Carlist War. A life dedicated to defense and politics. 🇪🇸 The Carlist Wars were civil conflicts that shook Spain during the 19th century. The fight was over who should govern the country. 🏰 They began after the death of King Ferdinand VII in 1833, when a debate arose between liberals and absolutists regarding the succession. ⚖️ The Carlists supported the king’s brother, Don Carlos, defending the traditional monarchy and the privileges of the nobility. 👑 The liberals, on the other hand, supported the king’s daughter, Isabella II, seeking to modernize Spain and limit the power of the nobility. 🏛️ The wars were fought mainly in the north: the Basque Country, Navarre, Catalonia, and La Rioja were key theaters of battle. 🗺️ Baldomero Espartero gained fame as “The Peacemaker” for his military skill and negotiating abilities. 🤝 📍Monument in Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism. Zugarramurdi, a small Navarrese village near La Rioja, became infamous for a witchcraft case. The locals believed that witches’ sabbaths, or akelarres, were held there. 🌙 The Spanish Inquisition initiated legal proceedings in 1610, investigating alleged practices of black magic and pacts with the devil. ⚖️ Women and some men were accused of practicing forbidden rituals, such as invocations, nighttime dances, and casting spells against neighbors. 💃🕯️ 📍Church of San Bartolomé. More than 300 people were arrested, although most were released after forced confessions. Torture and fear were common methods of the Inquisition. 😨 Only 11 women and 3 men were condemned to death by burning at the stake, in a case that marked the region’s historical memory. 🔥 These rituals were believed to have taken place in nearby caves and forests, such as the famous Zugarramurdi Cave, which can still be visited today. 🕳️ 📍Church of Santa María de Palacio.
