What is Hidden in Chiang Mai? / Walking Tour with Cafe, Restaurants, Secret Spots & Thai Food

Guys, in today’s episode, we’re going to do a walking tour around one of the most ancient, beautiful, and deeply loved cities of Northern Thailand called Chiang Mai. It’s going to be a walking tour around the old town of Chiang Mai. DIY walking tour – because all locations we’ll be visiting,
I’m going to add in the video description. So that when you come to Chiang Mai – you can visit
them by yourself. Today we’ll be exploring old ancient beautiful temples, hunting for hidden gems of Chiangmai old town,
beautiful cafes, beautiful restaurants.. and of course enjoying delicious food of Northern Thailand. And if you got some time and empty space in your stomach and you are ready to spend this precious time together with me, then you can join me in this hungry adventure. Let’s go! And we begin this hot and sunny day with breakfast in one of my favorite spots to the south from the old town. Hello.. I’d like to order Khao Mun Gai, special portion. Only 1? Boiled chicken? May I order a mix, please? Okay, sure. Please, take a sit. The place is called “Nantharam Rice Chicken”,
and you shouldn’t expect Pad Thai or Pad Grapao here. People come here to eat rice and chicken –
“Khao Mun Gai”. because it is cheap, it is delicious..
This is a very old restaurant and their sauce is magnificent! Special sauce for “Khao Mun Gai” with ginger and garlic. It is a little bit spicy, but you don’t have to eat this sauce. There is an ordinary sweet chili Thai sauce which is not that spicy but quite sweet. It’s very beautiful meal. Amazing breakfast, which is a usual option for Thai people –
they love to eat such things on breakfast and on lunch. and it cost only 50 Baht. All right, now we’re going in this direction.
Let’s get some coffee! Hello.. Do you have number 62? 62?
Yes 62. Why are you not fluent in Thai? Yes, I am not fluent in Thai, but I can speak English! 62, 62.. Must be somewhere here, but can’t find..
Here is 63 and 61. I don’t have 62. Don’t have 62? Ah, 62 is a lucky number. Was somewhere here.. but don’t have anymore. Okay, I’ll take number 63. 63 is right here.. only 1 ticket, right? How much is it?
100 Baht. Okay. Bye bye.. Thai lottery – twice a month. Never never won before and don’t intend to win.. But I don’t know.. It’s just a feeling..
Feeling of being lucky! We’ll see! 63.. Look at the sky, it’s so blue.
Not raining anymore.. Finally! So here, in 50 meters from the chicken rice restaurant,
there is this coffee shop, which I wanted to visit for a long time. Because it looks cute, just like a charcoal!
Very beautiful and big charcoal – “Sol Cafe”. And they say the coffee cost 45 Baht. I’d like to order Honey Lemon Americano coffee. Sure. What coffee roast would you like – dark or medium?
Dark roast, please. Okay. Thai people love to visit Chiang Mai for camping, because there are many camping spots. I also love camping in Chiang Mai.. And this shop has this kind of camping style chairs and the protection from the sun. So, you don’t need to go to the mountains.
Just sit here, enjoy delicious coffee, and just relax. Oh, she’s got air conditioning there.
I was worried how does it feel to be in such a small van. but there is air conditioning. You’ve got air conditioning inside, right?
Yeah, you’re right. It cost 60 Baht, right?
Yeah. Thank you. Americano with honey and lemon. Sour and sweet.. Should mix it first. Oh yes, it is good.
Mmm very delicious coffee! Let’s continue. Unusual. Didn’t expect to see it. Hello.. Do you speak Thai? Do they speak?
Yes, they speak and sing.. Can sing “Happy Birthday” song. Happy birthday to you.. Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday… No? Not today? What is this thing?
What is that thing? What is this thing? What are you doing?
Don’t do that.. Don’t do that! Are you afraid of water? What’s going to happen if you get wet? This is why I force you to do walking tours around Chiang Mai, because Chiang Mai is the magical place. And only while walking on these streets you might find such interesting spots. It’s just a restaurant. A Chinese restaurant. And they’ve got many cages with with parrots and some unknown creatures which look like sugar gliders, but they are really big. Very cute thing. Sometimes tourists criticize Thailand for having those wires hanging above your head, hanging along the road. However, in my opinion, it is really beautiful.
It is real urban art, urban design. And I cannot imagine Thailand without those wires because they are beautiful. Can you imagine how many people, how many hands, how many minds were used to create all those interconnected complex knots and coils of wires? And every time you are looking up, you are seeing beautiful nature and something that was made by by human.. and I find beauty in it! Maybe I’m just weird, but to me it is more beautiful than some modern sculpture or modern painting.. That modern art which you can find in some
fancy exhibitions and museums. This is real art.
These people didn’t intend to create an object of art. People did some work here.
This is the art of labor. And I personally find it amazing. What do you think about it? And talking of art, we are coming to our next destination, next point of interest, which is right there. Men plus woman have to buy ticket.
Everything is clear. Hello.. 50 Baht, right? Just one?
Yes, 1 person. Thank you. Welcome to Wat Sri Suphan, one of the most artistic temples of Chiang Mai city, where majority of objects and the main ubosot (the main hall of the temple) are made of silver.. which is why the temple has second name “Wat Ngern” – Silver Temple. It is a very beautiful statue of Ganesh – Hindu God of wisdom, God of success, who in Thailand is called “Phra Pikanet” – Remover of obstacles. And Ganesh always has a friend.. If you have a wish, you need to whisper your wish in the ear of this mouse and put a small donation in a bowl that it holds. Okay..
Thank you! The silver temple is located on Wualai Road and this area is very well known for its local talented community and their craftsmanship, because they can do lots of stuff with silver. Everything you see around is done with silver.
It is amazing. And if you want to  try it by yourself, if you want to learn how to work with silver, you can come to this temple, And outside of the main gate, there is a small shop (few shops actually), where local masters can teach you how to work with silver. And you can try to do some of the simple items by yourself. And our next destination “Milk Club”?
No, probably not.. Not yet! Excuse me, I’d like to go to “Wat Jet Lin” Temple..
Do you know it? How much it’s gonna be?
100 Baht. Okay, let’s go. Our next destination is “Wat Jet Lin” Temple..
Oh why do you speak Thai so well! Oohhh brum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum.. Our next destination is not that far and 100 Baht maybe is a little bit high price. However, you’re not going to argue about the price with an old man who is getting 2 or maybe 3 customers a day, right? Let’s support local people! Besides, tuk-tuk is a different kind of entertainment! This was an exciting ride, and now we’ve come in the old town itself,
inside the city walls. Those square city walls surrounding the old town. And we are in this southeastern area of the old town. The temple is called “Wat Jet Lin”,
which translates as the “Temple of Seven Canals”. “Wat” means a “temple”, “Jet” means “seven”
and “lin” for some reason it’s translated as “canal”. Why don’t we call it “Wat Jet Klong”? Probably in the northern dialect “Lin” means a “canal”,
while Bangkok people say “Klong”. Anyway, accordingly to the legend, Royal Lanna family used to come to this temple to take a bath in the seven canals, which intersect somewhere in this area. There is a beautiful pond behind this temple, so maybe this was the place where they took a bath.. Because nobody says where exactly those seven canals of the old town of Chiang Mai intersect. However, the temple is old. It is believed to be founded in 1,600 year,
which makes it over 400 years old. Let’s explore! Beautiful bamboo walkway in the middle of the pond.. And the area is so quiet and peaceful here. For some reason, this temple is not very popular with tourists.
I don’t know why. But this is probably the only temple in Chiang Mai old town with such a beautiful pond. I don’t know any other.. Nature here is combined with spirituality, with history, with beliefs..
Nothing else needed to find your inner peace, right? Hello.. Are you open? Already open..
Ah open, okay. Open..
Please, welcome! Beef noodles is the recommended menu?
Yes, beef noodles is our signature dish. You film TikTok?
No, not TikTok, this is for YouTube. Do you like to watch TikTok?
Yeah.. There are short videos on TikTok, and long videos on YouTube. Do you also have Northern sausage?
Yep. Is it tasty?
Oh-hooo.. Oh, okay.
We have the best noodles in Chiang Mai. Number 1! 80 Baht, right?
Okay, I’d order it too. “Sai Ua” If you ask is it delicious or not and someone says “Oh-hooo”.. it means it must be really tasty. Wow, just look at these noodles. Looks very delicious.
And I can tell that the meat is tender. It’s supposed to be very soft. Wow. Wow… Mmm… Beef really melts in my mouth. They’ve got some unique recipe. Incredibly tasty! Unbelievably delicious..
That’s why they call this restaurant “The best beef noodles”. “Sai Ua” – Northern Thai sausage with herbs.
Let’s try it too! This is good.. This is something really good! Do you believe in second chances?
I do. I do believe in second chances. Everyone deserves a second chance. And here behind me there is an old Thai wooden house, which was transformed into a rehabilitation center for ex- prisoners.. for women who went to prison. And as many of you know, it is difficult to find a job after you’ve been convicted for something. But there are still good people out there and they deserve a second chance. Which is why I wanted to visit this place and support and promote it a little bit. Because it is a massage center, and the prices are not that high for Chiang Mai.. Normal prices.. And the house itself looks beautiful, it is a really old Thai house. Let’s enter inside and see if we will be able to get a massage today. Hello.. Are you fully booked today?
Yes, we are full today. Really? Oh.. 300 Baht for 1 hour.
Hello.. Must come tomorrow?
Tomorrow at 9 am. At 9 am I am still sleeping! Usually you’re fully booked on Saturday and Sunday?
Yeah.. Usually it looks like this in the morning..
Oh, a lot of people! Very popular place! Wow.. Yesterday we booked whole day in 30 minutes. Oh.. so good! You speak Thai so well..
Thank you! How old old is this house?
Over 100 years old. 109 years?
Ah, over 100 years old. Wow. Amazing..
You can walk up and see it! You can walk up and start with that room, where we tell the story of this place. Okay. I get it.
Thank you so much. Fully booked today, unfortunately. Hello.. Bananas cost 20 baht for a pack?
Yes, 20 Baht Wow. They’re so big! And what is that? It’s called “Lamut”. “Lamut” is a Thai fruit?
Yes, it’s from Thailand. I am not familiar with it. It’s an old style fruit.. traditional Thai fruit. Looks just like a tomato.. The small ones are ripe, big one are not that sweet. Looks like a persimmon.. pulp of this fruit resembles persimmon. Oh so sweet.. It’s way too sweet! The taste is something like persimmon and yet not the same. I’ll better buy bananas! Do you know this fruit? This is..
“SiangThor” What do you call it?
It’s called “SiangThor”. The pulp looks like mango.. or maybe like a soap.. No smell.. Must be a bit creamy..
Yes, it is a little bit creamy.. but not like durian! The pulp is just like purple potato.
Yeah, it does resemble purple potato. Why do you speak so well.. Maybe this is just a yellow sweet potato! Also the bananas.. Foreigners they’re like elephants – they love to eat bananas! What else you do not know? This fruits called “Noina”..
Yes, exactly.. And those are.. It’s called “Phut Saa”.. Something like “jubjub”?
Jujube apples, yeah.. Wait, wash it first!!
It’s okay, it’s already clean.. Jujube, right?
I’ll buy them too.. Half kilo, please. Is it sweet? I am not sure.
Yes, they’re sweet and tasty! But in Chiang Mai people say “Lam Tae Tae”, when they wanna say “Delicious”. Whole coconut together with coconut water inside. How much is it?
35 Baht. I’ll take it as well. So, a pack of bananas, a coconut.. Bottle of apple juice.. no, it’s a bottle of orange juice, not apple juice. Those three things..
I forgot what’s their name. And 1 kilogram of Jujube apples. Total 143 Baht, which is a little bit more than $4 US. This is quite cheap for the old town of Chiang Mai. This is the city center and prices are supposed to be higher. However, only locals do shopping here in this area. Which is why I recommend you to come here and buy something.
I will mark the location of this place in the video description. Americano coffee and coconut water.
Never tried before. Mmm.. Yes, it definitely has a flavor of coconut. Antioxidants.. I will never die! 45 Baht for this cup,
and 35 Baht for a cup of ordinary Americano coffee with ice. Probably the lowest prices in the entire Chiang Mai town. 35 Baht for a coffee is just like in 7-Eleven.. But the interior of this cafe is quite nice.
Urban modern style. Many tables, nice music.
What else do you need? Just a little bit of coffee and then continue walking! Really good.. 35 Baht for Americano and 45 Baht for a cup of coffee with coconut water. Simple but very delicious. And if you want something a little bit more special, a little bit more fancy,
Chiang Mai has something to offer! What an amazing place we have found, guys! It is called “Fahtara Coffee”. And it is located right next to the spa center which is amazing, because I can feel the smell of the essential oil used in this spa and these massages. And just the decorations, the style and architecture are amazing. Old style houses with wooden roofs. Beautiful Chiang Mai style red umbrellas, tall trees covering the sky, birds chirping in those trees. And we are in the city center of Chiang Mai.. Wow.. You don’t feel those motorbikes and those cars outside.
You’re just in a completely different dimension. Nature.. Coffee is a little bit on high side starting with 100 Baht for a hot coffee. But you’re paying for the quality.
You are paying for the setting and for peace.. Because you can just chill, don’t talk to anybody.
Just listen to relaxing music. Enjoy the sounds of water, once they will turn on the water wheel, and just drink beautiful coffee! And now we’re making a little detour because we need to make an update on my favorite restaurant in the old town. Restaurant with the most delicious Khao Soi! Wow. Looks appetizing! Finally you can try one more menu! This is from the new menu, right?
Yeah. Never seen “Khao Soi” with seafood before! Excellent! Last year we were serving Khao Soi with crispy pork, and this year decided to do something we’ve never done before. “Nine Siblings” – the restaurant I discovered around 3.5 years ago and fell in love with it, because Khao Soi here is really the best.. The best I was able to find in the old town! It’s just so perfect.. I tried here Khao Soi with chicken, Khao Soi with beef, with pork and etc. And recently I discovered that they’ve got a new menu – Khao Soi with seafood, which I’ve never seen before anywhere in Thailand. And this is the reason why I decided to visit my favorite restaurant once again and give you an update on it. As you can see, there are shrimps, Asian green mussels, and a huge piece of squid. And if you are coming to Thailand for the very first time, Khao Soi is the dish number one that you should try. And there is another update about “Nine Siblings” restaurant. In the old days, it used to be open only until 4 pm like any other Khao Soi restaurant. However, now they’re open till 8 pm, which means you can have Khao Soi for breakfast, for lunch, and for dinner. They did some remodeling here.
The bar and the coffee stand are outside now, and there is external juice bar. There are more tables now.
And the food here is incredibly delicious, of course. Where’s my squid? Mmm.. fresh.
Super fresh, just like in Chumphon! Yes, we are in Chiang Mai, there is no beach around.
However, seafood is delicious here. And they’ve got a really great coffee because this coffee… They use coffee beans grown in Chiang Mai,
from remote area where Karen people live. That’s original, natural, locally grown coffee. For some reason, I’m in love with black coffee mixed with orange juice. Weird combination – orange juice and coffee.
However, it tastes incredibly good! What do you think about Americano with orange juice? Do you like it or not?
Or you prefer just black coffee? Write me in the comments! These are raw coffee beans from that district in Chiang Mai called ”Om Koi”. And as you see, these are halves..
half coffee beans. However, these ones are more special and rare because they are not halves. These are whole coffee beans.. which look like little balls. I’ve never seen those before.
They’re very different. Look like green peas. This is already roasted coffee.
Light roast, dark roast and medium roast. And for some reason, medium roast has a flavor of cocoa. Maybe they add cocoa when they when they roast this coffee.
Amazingly good! So, it is not just a Khao Soi restaurant.
This is also a coffee shop, which I highly recommend. Because coffee here is tasty.
And this is Chiang Mai grown coffee. Let’s support local producers! Ah, incredibly good! The day is coming to an end, and you can see beautiful sunset colors somewhere on the horizon. And this temple is the final temple we are going to visit today. “Wat Lok Moli” temple, which is located on the northern border of the Old Town city walls. “Wat Lok Moli” was founded in the 14th century. Temple with 600 years old history. Truly stunning.. and not a very popular temple by the way. However, tourists really love to visit it because this is a very ancient stupa. But on this side, this is a very modern ubosot which was built in old Lanna style. So, history and heritage is combined here with modern architecture and old designs, traditional designs. Beautiful! Very lively here today on a weekday.. in couple hundred meters away from “Wat Lok Moli”
(the temple we have just visited), we can find a lively market called “Chang Pueak”, which is really loved by foreign tourists. And honestly this market reminds me of Chinatown in Bangkok, because it’s bustling,
there is a wide variety of foods here just like in Chinatown. Some people are burning something, cooking something with huge fire and etc. And I believe we can find something tasty here too!
Foreigners can eat – Mickey also can eat! This suki restaurant is probably the most popular spot here. I booked a place. My queue is A243. And they say I’ll have to wait for about 35 minutes until I get a chance to sit inside and eat suki. But yeah, for some reason this suki place is very popular, and people are willing to wait to try those sukiyaki noodles or suki soup. Hello.
Just 25 minutes.. What would you like?
Suki noodles with seafood please. Dry noodles or with soup? With soup, please. Would you like some water?
Yes, 1 bottle please. Would you like to eat here?
Yes, please. Okay. 79 Baht. Why is it so popular? Why everyone wants to eat here? It’s tasty! Okay, done. Food has arrived.. Also there is dipping sauce. Dipping sauce is one of the most important things in sukiyaki noodles. Mmm sweet and sour.
It is delicious but not spicy at all. But I am that guy who travels with own dipping sauce, which is spicy. And now I’m absolutely sure it’s going to be amazingly tasty. But it really looks appetizing, I got to say. It was worth waiting..
Wheter it’s 30 minutes or 40 minutes. But yeah, now I understand why. Not an ordinary suki noodles that you can find somewhere along the road. This is really special. Pretty decent portion and not expensive at all. Beautiful, beautiful dinner. Amazing evening meal. Vegetables, seafood, and spiciness from the dipping sauce. What else do you need after a good walking day? There is one more spot I want to check out while we’re here. Seems it is a legendary spot and I didn’t even know about it. This one.. Lady in a cowboy hat! “Khao Kha Moo” Hello.. Hi!
“Khao Kha Moo” cost 80 Baht, right? Yep. I’d order 1 plate, please. What is so special about this shop? Years ago, maybe 10 years ago, when Anthony Bourdain was visiting Ching Mai, he went to eat in this shop. And probably since that time, this place and this lady in the cowboy hat have become very popular. Let’s try it for the very first time! But we need a little bit of spiciness, first.. Now it’s got to be really perfect. The magical dipping sauce.. Now it is just amazing! Balance is what makes dishes unique and exceptional. Finding this balance between saltiness, spiciness, sweetness, sourness and etc. Hello.. Are you a “Bolt” driver? okay.. Had enough of coffee today.. Which is why we end this day with delicious, healthy, and fragrant cocoa from AROICA brand. And please forgive me, the door is open. Ah.. Coffee in the morning, Thai tea in the afternoon, and cocoa in the evening, just to chill and relax. Thank you guys for this lovely tour.

  7. I literally booked my trip to Chiang Mai this week! It's been over 10 years since I wandered through the city. I can't wait to try some of those places in your video.

I've tried at least 6 preparations of khao soi in the past 5 years in the US, but none of them reminded me of my dear granny's version. The last time I had that food memory was in Chiang Mai; I hope to try several restaurants and identify the one that most reminds me of her version.

  8. Ah Another Top Quality Video from Brat Micky, can you see effort and thought went into this….Great Stuff…..Greetings from Cape Town

  10. A perfect episode for me! Chiang Mai, my second home. Again you showed me some very nice and interesting new places. For sure I will visit them. And I agree totaly: 9 Siblings is the absolutely best place for me for khao soy! For sure all the other food they offer is also delicious. But next time I will try another khao soy, namely the sea food khao soy you had in this episode 🤤. Thank you Mickey❣️

  11. Hi Mickey
What a perfect city guide you edited. Less contemplative then most of your travel video but so interesting, lively and as always beautifully shoot.
Chiang Mai is a place I’d love to visit and you have given me even more reason to go there one day. Thank you so much.
I which you a nice evening. Take care.

  12. Thoroughly enjoyed this vid! I've watched many of your episodes, especially about Thailand, and I've picked up many tips from you on motorbiking in Thailand, tourist locations. What I've liked most, are the local areas you often feature, and your authentic interaction with the locals. After watching so many episodes, I can say that you are getting so good with your content and videography – better aesthetics, pacing and music – as seen in your latest episodes. Hoping you will keep the vids going

  13. วีดีโอดีๆมาแล้ว ผมชอบการนำเสนอของคุณแต่ละที่ๆคุณไป คุณศึกษาข้อมูลเป็นอย่างดี
