02 | This Hidden Castle Above the Main River Surprised Me — Wertheim Walk

Hello! Today, we’re wandering together through the picturesque streets of Wertheim, still preserving the charm of the Middle Ages. First, let’s take a quick look at this charming town where the Main and Tauber rivers meet. In this small town at the confluence of two rivers, we can feel history in every corner. ✨👟 Tie your shoes tightly! We’re starting our walk along the Main River. Narrow cobblestone streets and colorful half-timbered houses await us. Stone pavements will accompany our calm steps and the little shops we discover along the way. This is Historischer Marktplatz — the old market square surrounded by 16th–18th century architecture. This square has been the heart of the town’s social life for centuries. Here is Engelsbrunnen — a draw fountain built in 1574, featuring two angel figures. The fountain adds a small but impressive touch to the town’s historical identity. Kilianskapelle (on the left) — a late Gothic two-story chapel, construction started in 1472. Stiftskirche — foundation stone laid in 1384, a Gothic basilica. Count Johann I planned and developed this church as a family burial site. Stone columns and arches are elegant examples of medieval masonry. Blaues Haus — built in 1593, this rare blue wooden façade is colored with glass pigment. We are at the façade of Grafschaftsmuseum, preserving the town’s history and regional collections. The museum’s collection is the result of a collecting tradition dating back to the 19th century. We climb Burgweg towards the castle — panoramic views of the Main and Tauber rivers along the way. Burg Wertheim was built in the 12th century and served as the home of the Counts of Wertheim. The castle was expanded in the 15th and 17th centuries and affected by various wars. In 1619, a major explosion partially destroyed the castle. Walking along the castle path, the peacefully grazing goats and the view of Wertheim below warm our hearts. Moments like these make this walk truly unforgettable. Our steps slow down here; stone walls and old structural ruins line the castle path. The name Burg Wertheim appears as “castrum” in documents from 1183. From the castle, the confluence of the rivers is wonderfully visible — ideal for defense and scenic views. Those narrow, colorful streets and rooftops look almost like a model. Over the river, the view dominating the town has remained unchanged for centuries. This is one of the best spots to take the town’s most beautiful photo. The castle’s current ruined appearance is the result of the Thirty Years’ War and a lightning strike. If you visit this romantic town, don’t forget to climb the castle and soak in this atmosphere! Walking these streets, you can almost hear the sound of a horse-drawn carriage, can’t you? A typical feature of medieval town planning: houses with wooden frames close together and narrow streets. Towers like the Spitzer Turm in front of us were used for both observation and early warning; the stonework looks very solid. We enter narrow side streets and breathe in the historic atmosphere of Wertheim. Cobblestone roads, half-timbered houses, and small windows take us on a journey back in time. In the evening, we walk through the Old Town; the stone streets take on a different atmosphere with the lights. The evening calm makes the history of the town feel even stronger — perfect for photography. Löwenbrunnen — the Lion Fountain, stands out as one of the town’s iconic points. Fountains often served as meeting points; here, people gathered and chatted. Tauberufer — the Tauber riverbank; the sound of water and the trees make the walk very peaceful. Riverside walks are part of the daily routines of the local people. Kittsteintor — one of the old city gates; an important part of the fortifications. These gates were positioned for control and defense purposes. Glasmuseum Wertheim — glassmaking is a traditional craft in the region; blowing techniques are important. The museum showcases the history of glass production and local workshop traditions. Rathaus — located within the old Hofhaltung building; it bears Gothic and Baroque traces. The town hall halls were used for administration and ceremonies in the past. Rathausbrücke — the view from the bridge shows the town’s connection to water. Bridges have always been central points in daily city life. Tauberbrücke — a stone-arched bridge, very photogenic with water reflections. Such bridges were generally vital for trade and connection. The tower served for city defense and observation; it’s one of the town’s symbols. Spitzer Turm overlooks the point where the Main and Tauber meet and was used as a strategic observation point. From the top of the tower, the town’s panoramic view and the rivers’ confluence can be easily seen. Thank you for joining me on this peaceful Wertheim walk. I’d be delighted if you like and subscribe. ❤️ Your comments mean a lot to me. See you on the next adventure!

  1. Hər kəsin hər vaxti xeyir olsun. Maraqla seyr edib zevk aldim. İlk dəfə idi ki bu şahanə şəhəri görürdüm. Baden Vürtemberq torpaqlarinda imiş. Faxverk evlər, daş döşənmiş kücələr, səliqə sahman, ruhumu oxşayir. Alman xalqi xarüqələr yaradan xalqdir. Ailəmiz də, tanidiqlarim da Almaniyani sevir. Sevinc bəxş edirsiiz . Əliniz qolunuz var olsun. Ugurlariniz davamli olsun!. Dəyərli paylaşim etmisiniz. Təşəkkür edirəm. Dəstək verərək rahatladim. Azərbaycandan sizə böyük saygisi olan Elşad💯💯💯🙏🙏🙏
