Today, we’re at a confectionery theme park in Shiga Prefecture called La Collina. We’re taking you on a journey to the world of sweets and nature. They have an incredible number of sweets here, all made
with carefully selected ingredients. Delicious! I’ve never had omurice this good… La Collina: A place for connection, where people gather,
love nature, and learn from it. Let us guide you to this paradise of sweets, filled with
the blessings of nature. We’re here! It took so long. We drove for three hours because we got stuck in traffic. Today, we’re visiting La Collina, a confectionery theme park. It was founded in Omihachiman City, and features both
Western and Japanese sweets. I’m so excited! Once we get past here… We’re here! Wow! It’s even more amazing than I imagined! What is La Collina? It opened in 2015 in Omihachiman, Shiga Prefecture,
as the flagship store for the Japanese confectionery company “Taneya”
and the Western confectionery company “Club Harie.” It really is incredible! A green paradise… It feels like we’re at Ghibli Park. The president of this company… The philosophy of the Taneya Group’s president: “Ingredients for sweets are
nature’s bounty.” La Collina communicates the importance of “life”
where people and nature coexist. That philosophy is clearly reflected in this green paradise. The roof is so beautifully maintained. It’s amazing! Is that a pine tree… up there? It’s cute… Nice. That cute roof is covered so nicely with grass. Water is dripping down. It’s real wood. La Collina’s Architecture: The buildings are made with natural materials,
like the grass roof and chestnut wood. The earth walls were hand-plastered
by the president and staff. We are here now. At the entrance of La Collina. First, I want to go to the baumkuchen cafe. The place that has the “freshly baked baumkuchen.” That’s the place I’m interested in. And the “Castella Shop.” They even have an area planned for new stores. I’m curious about that. So first, we’ll go this way… to the Baum Factory. This is the “Main Shop.” It’s the very first area right after we entered. They have souvenirs and gifts here. You have the shop for Japanese sweets run by the **Taneya Group** and the
shop for baumkuchen by **Club Harie**, side-by-side. I think these little dots on the ceiling represent ants. La Collina’s Symbol: The Ant
The ant, which has existed in nature for a hundred million years,
symbolizes the wish for the location to “always be a busy place
where people gather.” We’ll come back here later. First, let’s head to the baumkuchen shop. The area past this is also amazing. Isn’t this place huge? Did they just harvest the rice? They grow rice here too, and apparently sell it. It looks like the rice harvest is over, and people are working. And that iconic, Ghibli-esque building is the head office. That one is off-limits to visitors. The circular building next to it is the Baum Factory. So, should we go for the baumkuchen first? Was there a specific reason you wanted to come? How many years ago was it? About three years ago? I received a souvenir from La Collina, and it was castella cake. That castella cake… it was a shape I had never seen before. “A shape?” I was given a castella I didn’t recognize, and when I ate it… It was so delicious! So fluffy. So I asked, “Where did you buy this?” They said, “La Collina.” They also told me La Collina has many other kinds of sweets
and I should go visit. I’ve wanted to come ever since. After three years of waiting!? You really held onto that! It feels like we finally made it. We’ve arrived. This is Club Harie’s Baum Factory. The first floor is the factory, and the second floor is the cafe. We were told we might have to wait if we don’t go early,
so we’re going to eat the “freshly baked baumkuchen” first. The freshly baked one is only available here, right? I’m curious about it. It must be delicious. They said it’s very popular. The freshly baked one has its own
special deliciousness, but the regular one has a different kind of
deliciousness. Apparently, some people prefer the regular one. I’m looking forward to it. Let’s try both! It’s here. There were no menu items except for the mini.
It was only this size, right? It is pretty mini. I think we can each have one. I’m going to eat it now! It’s freshly baked! Here we go! Crunchy! Crunchy and fluffy! Just like this, for now. Delicious! I could eat about 10 of these. Is it different? Yeah, it’s different. The inside is fluffy, and the outside is sugar-coated,
so it’s a bit crunchy. Since it’s sugar-coated, you’d think it would be too sweet,
but it’s not. It’s just the right sweetness. Is it warm? A little bit warm. Next, I’ll try it with the whipped cream. I think it would be good without the whipped cream too. I might prefer it without it. I’ll try it with the cream! It’s delicious, right? It’s like… eating foam. It’s so finely textured.
It’s like a very gentle… …super fluffy facial cleanser foam. The cream isn’t that sweet,
is it? It’s just lightly sweet. So when you combine the baumkuchen and the whipped cream,
it doesn’t get too sweet. It’s just a light, fluffy feeling. Even though they say “freshly baked,” it’s not super hot, is it?
It’s just right. It’s a warmth that enhances the aroma. It’s so delicious… The last bite. It was over in a moment. I’ve already decided I’m going to buy some baumkuchen downstairs. I want to try the regular baumkuchen too, the one that isn’t
freshly baked. They sell it downstairs. That was a treat. You can tour the factory (for free). I’m going to the factory now. So this is how they make it. The baumkuchen we just had… They dip it into a thin batter… …dip it into something, and spin it around, gradually layering
a thin coat. It looks like they repeat that process many times. This is my first time seeing this process. So this is how it’s made. They put their heart into making each and every one of these sweets. So neat. It’s coated that way. To make just one loaf… how many people are involved in making this dough?
So many people are involved. It’s amazing… Even for making sweets, so many people are involved. I’m so grateful. You can view it from the second floor, too. They do it so carefully. Ah! Are they sugar-coating it right there? You’re right. The sugar-coating is done by hand, isn’t it? It is! They don’t just dunk it in. They’re using a brush to gently coat it. Amazing, one by one. How many of these do they make in a day? After coating, it’s cut by a cutter. It’s cutting, it’s cutting. It’s cut, transported, put into boxes, and then put into the packaging bags. That’s how they do it. There are so many different packages. The packaging is cute, too. So cute… The Taneya Group’s president is the older brother,
and the younger brother is the president of Club Harie. This piece of art was created by that president.
It’s the King of Beasts, the Lion! It’s unbelievable… Even with that written there, I’d still doubt it. Astonishing. But when you look closely, you can see the fur…
If they say it’s chocolate, then maybe I can believe it. I’m amazed! It’s not just baumkuchen. I want to go to the Japanese sweets shop,
but we’re stuck at just one store! We’ve only been to one shop. We’ve probably spent two hours here… We bought some. We definitely bought some. The freshly baked one from the baumkuchen factory,
the one for today only… And the regular baumkuchen. The normal baumkuchen. Let’s compare! It’s delicious. The sugar coating is attached to the cake part.
It feels like they’ve become one. It’s easier to eat, and it tastes sweeter.
The regular one is sweeter than the freshly baked. It’s fluffy. Which one is better? The freshly baked. I like the freshly baked one. This one is good, though. Now, for the castella cake! The one that made me want to come here! I’m looking forward to this the most. This is the Japanese sweets shop. We’re here. It looks so good! Omurice set. You can only get it after 11:00 AM. This is luxurious. And look! This is the castella cake!
The freshly baked castella. It doesn’t look like castella at all. When I first received this, they said, “It’s castella, it’s delicious,
try it.” I thought, “This is castella!?” And they put this on it, too. Anko, or red bean paste.
It must be delicious. That’s what hit me! I knew I had to come here! May I eat? I’ll have some! The sauce is amazing. It’s so runny. Delicious. I’ve never had omurice like this. It’s not like regular omurice? You’d think the egg would get soggy if it was in a liquid,
but it’s firm. The rice isn’t just plain white rice, either. It’s like multigrain rice. You’re right. It’s a new texture, a flavor I’ve never tasted before. Judging by the look, I thought it might be Italian, but it’s different
from Italian. It’s Japanese-style. Maybe this is something you can only eat here. The freshly baked one. I’m going to eat it. This is what we came to La Collina for today.
Our number one goal is this. We came here to eat this, the “freshly baked castella.” I’ve opened it. Let’s just try it on its own first. Nostalgic. It’s constantly fluffy. It feels like it contains so much air. It doesn’t feel like castella at all. It’s closer to chiffon cake.
It’s a cake. But it’s Japanese-style, right? Even though it’s close to chiffon cake…
it’s like a cross between castella and chiffon cake. Now, let’s try it with the red bean paste. Dorayaki. Dorayaki? The red bean paste has a gentle sweetness. It’s delicious. I understand why you said dorayaki.
The red bean paste doesn’t overpower it. How is it? After three years, it’s exactly what I expected.
“This is the taste,” you know? It originated with the Japanese sweets of “Taneya,” and then came
“Club Harie’s” Western sweets. This one is the original, so to speak. La Collina also seems to want to spread the idea
that “sweets are made from nature.” We usually only think about the finished product. But in reality, from the harvesting of the rice to the very beginning,
these sweets are created. The connections between people, the connection with nature…
Even to make one item, there are so many connections. Eating a sweet with that understanding is completely different.
This place lets you feel that. Now, I think we’ll check out the food court and the gift shop. Is the food court for meals? They have meals, soft-serve ice cream, and many other things. We’re passing by the new area. You buy tickets from a machine. You take the ticket to the container shops (A, B, C, or D)
to get your food. Italian rice croquette, Arancino. It’s said to contain Omihachiman’s specialty,
“Red Konnyaku,” inside the rice. Red konnyaku. You don’t hear about that much. It has red konnyaku, and apparently, egg too.
They use eggs in everything, for sweets and meals. It’s not really Italian. It feels more like Mexican. Is it spicy?
Yes, it’s spicy. It’s closer to tacos or taco rice. It has a kick and it’s delicious. That was good. It was a slightly unusual croquette. This is the gift shop. There’s a bus inside… It’s huge! It feels like a garage. Like a hobby warehouse. Is this what you were talking about? Ah, this is it! Baumkuchen is supposedly inside this. “Kugel Baum.” Baumkuchen filled with caramel and baked until fragrant. After eating our fill, now it’s time for the souvenirs. It’s so much more crowded now than when we first arrived. It’s a weekday today! This many people on a weekday is amazing. Taneya-san’s signature sweet is “Fukumi Tenpei.” It’s a monaka-style sweet. I think I’ll buy that.
You already know what you want! But everything looks so delicious. “Olive Ankoromochi.” It looks so gooey and delicious. The president traveled to various countries and uses olives
from a place he felt was “the one.” The company that sells
these olives only imports them here. It’s exclusive, so you can only eat it here.
They have a lot of different things. Finally, I went up to the second floor and bought the “Nama Dorayaki.”
This is our last meal at La Collina. It’s chewy. The dough? The presence of the fresh cream is amazing, but it doesn’t overpower
the red bean paste. It’s just the right balance. It’s not too sweet. It’s refreshing, and chewy.
It’s the best! Everything here is the best. The sweets and food at La Collina all feel harmonious.
None of them are too strong or too weak. They blend together perfectly. I feel a sense of newness, of idea and creativity. It’s delicious. You should eat it. We ate our fill, from sweets to a full meal. I was so happy. How was La Collina, which you’ve wanted to visit for three years? The kindness that envelops this place is a cumulative effort
of everyone involved’s passion. I felt that this passion is what brings smiles to the faces of visitors. Do you have a “passion” that you hold dear?
