This is Baiyan Village in Zigui County, Hubei Province. Hidden in a cliff crevice are clear traces of human activity. Legend has it that hundreds of years ago, a mysterious army hid here to escape war. They carved walkways through the cliffs , coexisting with this treacherous mountain. The surrounding sheer cliffs act as a natural barrier, isolating us from the outside world. As we climb the cliff face , walking on the suspended walkways tens of meters high, with a bottomless abyss below and howling mountain winds beside us, every step is terrifying. We can’t help but marvel at how the ancients carved out a path to survival in such a perilous place. Why are there traces of human habitation in this precipitous place? What joys and sorrows have these caves witnessed? And is all of this closely related to the migration history and survival wisdom of the local ethnic minorities ? Today, let’s follow our lens… Let’s delve into the ancient cave on the cliff face and explore this mysterious ethnic story hidden on the precipice. Hello everyone, I’m Tingting. Today we’ve come to the mountains of Yichang, Hubei. Here, on the cliff face, there ‘s a very narrow crack. The crevice is embedded in the bare rock wall. From the drone footage, we can see traces of human activity inside. There’s only one small path leading to the crack . Let’s go and explore it together and see what secrets the crack holds. This cave is called Baiyan Cave. When we came here, we learned from the local elders that a Tujia hero , Xiang Wang Tianzi, once lived here . Xiang Wang Tianzi was an ancient historical figure with a very high status among the Tujia people. He led the Tujia people in resisting oppression and fighting for their national identity. The representative of interests , but according to the data, Xiang Wang Tianzi seems to be just a name. Many people use this name to lead the Tujia people to resist oppression and fight for ethnic interests. The cave we are going to now is also said to have been where Xiang Wang Tianzi camped after his defeat. The cave is unfathomably deep and can hold thousands of troops. It is also said to be able to hide a lot of weapons. Let’s go up and see if we can find any traces left by the ancients, because the village below is relatively close. This place used to be a deep mountain forest. Due to the changes of the times , it has now been developed and many people live here. Standing here, we can already see the crack. It is over there. Its height is about ten meters. We need to walk along this cliff to get there . Looking up from the bottom of the cliff , it’s quite high, probably several hundred meters. The village elders told us that people with a fear of heights can’t get up here without any equipment, especially those with psychological pressure, because it requires climbing and clinging to the rocks. The old walkways were destroyed , or rather, they collapsed due to years of neglect. The soil here is sandy and shows signs of loosening; you have to be careful walking on this path. But it’s okay here ; although it’s a slope, there are trees below. Even if you slip, you’ll only get minor injuries. Tingting said the sand is quite loose; look, you can easily slip and fall! Wow, these rocks are layered and very regular, a bit like a mille-feuille, haha. From here… From this angle, you can see many houses on the opposite side. Many people live here now; I wonder if they’ve lived here for generations or if they moved here. The curve of this cliff is a perfect semi-circle. Oh my god , is this the way up? I ca n’t get over there; it should be here. Oh no, my legs are too short! Wow, it’s hard to climb! My goodness, my legs are shaking! From a distance, it doesn’t look like much, but up here, the stone steps are quite steep. Slow down! Ugh, I don’t dare look down at all. It’s okay, it’s not very high here. Looking down from here, it’s probably only a few meters. It looks more dangerous up there. Wow, can we go up here? These rocks have collapsed, and they’ve even built a wooden structure here to test its sturdiness . It’s quite sturdy, but we need to use our feet to probe the path before we dare to step on it . My legs are shaking, hurry up! It’s okay, it’s not a cliff. Are your legs just weak? Are you tired? This is like a challenge, an adventure. These stones must have accumulated here from the crevices of the cliff over time. Stones could fall down at any time. Look at this area above , it used to be a stone staircase. Wow, look, there are many grooves here . See? There are more here. This area used to be built with wood, because these grooves are like those at the Hanging Temple. Wood was placed inside, and then you could walk on them. Because of the limited terrain, they could only build structures in these crevices. No, they were just passageways to get up. Oh, look, it collapsed now. The local villagers used a few pieces of wood to rebuild it. I couldn’t see it clearly from over there, but the angle here is better. To be clearer, the width of this crack isn’t very wide; I can’t even stretch my arm out, it’s probably less than a meter. Wow, these rocks are so loose! Because this is where rocks fall; if you lift your foot, the rock will roll down. I suggest only one person can pass at a time like this. My goodness, this side is so narrow! To get through, you have to climb. Be careful, it’s more than ten meters below! Do n’t be fooled by the bottom; you can only hold half a foot by gripping the rocks. There’s a small platform here ; let’s go over and take a look. My goodness, the view from here is quite nice; the distant mountains and villages look exceptionally beautiful. However, it’s quite dangerous below; the cliff must be twenty or thirty meters high. You see, there are some grooves here; you can tell this place used to be… There’s a platform here, let’s go up. It’s all rubble. There are some fireworks here , probably for some festival. Local villagers come here to set off fireworks. Why don’t they rebuild this place? Those grooves are still there. These stones are probably man-made , not modern people. They’ve clearly been there over time. There must have been a wall here before , a wall that collapsed . You can see it here . Let’s go, keep going up. This stone has such a big crack! Wow, there are cracks everywhere . You wouldn’t have noticed if you hadn’t said anything. It’s a bit dangerous. Let’s hurry up. Those stones are all hanging out, it feels like they’re dangling. Let’s go! Wow, is this cotton? It reminds me of the song about fluffing cotton. It’s quite pretty here; there are actually a few cotton plants growing here. Let’s go up and take a look. There’s some red cloth draped over it. The words on it read “The Divine Position of Xiang Wang Tian Zun, All Skills Will Be Granted.” Next to it is “Sincerity Will Move Spirits.” There’s another plaque here , ” Xiang Wang Tian Zun.” It’s clear this place is frequently visited. Look, there are some traces of human activity— some beverage bottles , and incense ash stuck in the ground. Some people have even stuck cigarettes in there. This place where the Xiang Wang Tian Zun tablet is enshrined looks a bit like a tomb . Let’s look behind. Oh, actually, it’s not very wide , maybe a meter wide. There are some other things behind. Let’s go take a look. Now let’s go inside. This side is built with stones, but they’re spaced out, like rooms . This room is so narrow! I feel like these were some defensive fortifications built back then. Because legend says that many troops and weapons were hidden inside, they used these entrances and exits to build fortifications for defense or resistance. It’s more like a room. The local elders say this cave has a legend about it that’s hundreds or even thousands of years old ; they don’t know for sure, but it’s been hundreds of years. Wow, it’s so dark in here! You can’t see your hand in front of your face, it’s pitch black . Coincidentally, we didn’t bring flashlights today. Let ‘s just walk in a bit, since we’re not professional caving enthusiasts. Look, the cliff face here is uneven; it’s truly a hidden paradise! Oh, there are some grooves here . Could these be holes dug by wild animals? There should be large white rats and bats in the cave. Oh, look, there are cracks all over here; the rocks are split open. Look, this side feels very smooth, like walls cut by people, like the cement bricks or bricks we use to build houses. Let’s go a little further in. As I said before, we’re not professional caving enthusiasts, so we’ll just show you the general outline. There’s a dripping sound in here . We learned about this cave from the information we had earlier. This cave is said to… It’s over 20 kilometers in. It’s really deep inside. It’s so dark here . Maybe we shouldn’t go any further? Ugh, I’m a little scared. There’s a sense of oppression. I just talked to some local elders, and they confirmed it. They said it’s really deep inside, over 20 kilometers. Imagine how many troops and weapons were hidden there ! Wow, it’s so bright! It feels like seeing the light again after we come out . This cave entrance looks like a triangle. We’ve seen enough of this side. Let’s go check out the plank road on the other side. This plank road is entirely man-made, built against the cliff face. There’s also a wall here , but a large part of it has already collapsed. There were many loose stones on the path we came up from, and there are many loose stones here too. They must have put in a lot of effort to build this plank road and these walls. This wall is built from a super large stone block. You can see it’s quite sturdy. It must have been held together with glutinous rice water and mud. Like the cement we have now, there’s a platform here, probably a high point. From here, you can see everything clearly. Wow , it’s breathtaking! This angle is much higher than the platform we saw below; some are over 20 meters high! Wow, look over there ! Oops, I stepped into a pit! Look over there, the rocks have such big cracks; it looks like they might collapse at any moment! See that? Such a big piece has already cracked open! We’ve finished exploring Baiyan Cave. This is a meaningful place , hiding many stories of the Tujia people fighting for freedom. “Xiang Wang Tianzi” doesn’t refer to a specific person , but represents the former Tujia leaders who led the local people to resist oppression and fight for national interests. Every era has such heroes who worked for the people’s benefit. This place has been used by the local people to commemorate Xiang Wang Tianzi, because he once lived here. Okay, that’s all for today.     J’aime bcp l’histoire sur la Chine…j’aurai aimė connaître son histoire…il y a des grottes qui sont très profonde…il a dû y avoir des éboulements à certains endroits avec le temps…Il doit certainement y avoir de l’eau qlq part ou sinon ils ont dû faire un système d’irrigation pour faire venir de l’eau…et parfois…certaines grottes peuvent aboutir a différents endroits…merci pour cette promenade….
