ナジャック、秋のフランスの最も美しい村を訪れる旅 / 中世の街並み残るフランス南西部の田舎町 / 猫🐱 / お城 / 郷土料理 / Beautiful village in Najac, France
Hello everyone! This is Sayaka from quatre saisons.
In late October 2025, I travelled with my husband Matthieu to the village of Najac in south-western France. Hello! We’ve arrived in Najac. It’s started raining. The weather that day was constantly on and off with rain. The castle closes at 18:00, so we’re hurrying. It’s already past 16:00, so we’re rushing. I didn’t know there was a restaurant here! It’s a lovely little place. Just to be safe, he phoned the castle to let them know we were coming. (In rural French tourist spots, they sometimes close early if no one comes.) The bakery we used on our first visit to Najac was closed last time, but it was open this time! If it’s still open when we return from the castle, we’d like to pop in. It was a windy day, so you might find it a bit noisy at times. Please be mindful of the volume and continue enjoying the video. The hydrangeas have this lovely antique-inspired colour, don’t they? You can smell the scent of wood-burning stoves wafting from all around. That castle visible over there is beautiful. Roses are blooming! You sometimes see them even in autumn. Najac was lovely in summer, but autumn is beautiful too. The hamburger we had at this restaurant for lunch on our previous visit was delicious, but it was closed on the day we visited. The Najac beer I drank at this restaurant was delicious. This street is lovely too. Surprisingly, there are still flowers at this time of year. This dog sign is cute! It was raining, but not as cold as I’d expected. The rain has eased off a bit since earlier. It’s convenient being able to drive right into the village. Matthieu apparently wanted to drive up to the castle, but I was glad we walked as I wanted to enjoy the streetscape along the way. What a splendid fountain! Moreover, some statues of a human face is also attached to it. Was it used by someone important in the past? What a lovely garden. On the right is a chapel typical of the Occitanie region. When I visited before, I couldn’t enter, but this time the door was open for the first time! A very small chapel. The stained glass was beautiful. I researched this chapel quite a bit, but couldn’t find many details. It would have been nice if there were explanations inside the chapel. We’ll now walk towards the castle at the front. This is the Governor’s Residence (La maison du Gouverneur), which was once used as an administrative building during the monarchy. This building, which came into the possession of various noble families engaged in commerce during the late Middle Ages, retains important architectural features from the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries (arched shop fronts, windows, cupboards, toilet piping), and you can tour the interior. This village has many slopes, so walking back carrying heavy things is quite a struggle. However, there are cars on this street, so it seems vehicles can enter. From around here, the uphill slope gradually becomes steeper. Cars climbing this slope need quite a bit of power. Being generally unfit, plus the rain making the slope slippery, made walking quite tough. You can see the part of the village we just passed through. And now we continue climbing up to the castle! Almost as soon as we arrived at the castle, it started to rain. The entrance fee to the castle is €7 per person. In this building, you can also buy some small souvenirs related to the Château de Najac. Although the rain had started again, we intended to explore thoroughly! The wet slopes, especially over the leaves, are quite slippery, so caution is needed. After the French Revolution, this castle was sold. It’s said a local innkeeper bought it for 12 francs, and it was used as a quarry for building people’s houses, leading to the castle’s gradual destruction. Even nowadays, I suppose it depends on the stone, but I think stones are expensive. Stone houses do certainly give an impression of wealth, don’t they? There’s cloud over just that one spot. We’re now heading up to this keep. The rain has stopped for now, but it looks set to start again later. There are no trees only in that space. It says to please remain quiet during guided tours. There was a model recreating the castle. What a magnificent castle it was. This castle is a fortress built between 1253 and 1266 by Alphonse de Poitiers, brother of Louis IX, based on an ancient castle constructed around 1100 by the son of Raymond IV, Count of Toulouse. It subsequently became deeply involved in the Hundred Years’ War, the Wars of Religion, and the Croquants’ Rebellion (a peasant uprising), yet it is said it was never once attacked. As mentioned earlier, it was sold after the French Revolution and became a quarry for building people’s homes. The castle gradually fell into ruin and became a ruin. However, at the end of the 19th century, part of the castle was restored by Father Brunis. It was then sold to Alfred Jibier (a French politician and mayor of the nearby town of Villefranche), who undertook a complete restoration, transforming it into a tourist attraction. The path was narrow, and I felt a bit scared as I had to be careful not to fall. This window section is a bit dangerous, isn’t it, with no railings or anything. The river visible there was the Aveyron. We’ve climbed all the way up here in one go, so we’re exhausted and taking a little break. You can hear the bell ringing, so please pay attention to the bell! Such a small bell makes such a loud sound! From this keep, we can see the townscape we passed through earlier quite clearly. It’s started raining again. Right, back we go! Quite a steep staircase, isn’t it? We made it this far. It’s surprising how the sound of that little bell resonates and carries so far. And we’re discussing where they’d get stones from if they needed them when repairing the castle. This used to be the courtroom, didn’t it? What I thought was a sheep bleating? Turned out to be someone shouting, I think. They were growing wine grapes right near the castle. Now I’m heading towards the church. I slipped on the downhill slope and let out a cry. Sadly, the church wasn’t open. Apparently, when I visited in October, it’s only open on weekends, mornings and afternoons. I found a really lovely house It started raining again. I’m filming while holding an umbrella, so the sound of the rain is quite loud – Sorry! By the way I do like the sound of rain, though. You can see a bit of sunshine over there! How enviable. Only that spot has mist again – or is it smoke? I managed to spot some red leaves here and there, a sign of autumn. It’s late October, yet the roses are still blooming! It’s a shame there are no birds and cats when it rains. The weather forecast said the rain would stop tonight, but we’ll see. Is the rain only over the village, or is it also raining down in the town below? This gate is absolutely lovely! It looks ancient. The year this gate was built is written here, but is it 822 or 1822? 822 seems a bit too old, doesn’t it? Roses are blooming beside the door of the main building. How beautiful. So this is a bridge. There were a few more people earlier, but they’ve all disappeared, probably because of the rain. I was relieved that the clouds didn’t make it too dark. It must not have been such a large rain cloud. We went up this slope on the left earlier to visit the castle. We only filmed a little on the long downhill section as it’s slippery and dangerous. Najac is beautiful even in the rain. The rain continues, but the sky has brightened a little. Despite the inclement weather, I was surprised to find more tourists visiting Najack than I had imagined. A gathering? A tour? People are gathering. There was a shop selling tableware reminiscent of Japanese pottery. So Najac’s festival is held in August, is it? A little cat was peeking out of the window. We’re about to check into the hotel we’re staying at tonight! Let me show you the room at the hotel we stayed in this time! We could see Najac Castle from our room! There’s a chair, a television, and a desk. Not just a shower, but a bathtub too! Soap, a sink, and towels. The room is small but very charming. We booked dinner at the hotel restaurant. At first, we ordered white wine. The white wine from Gaillac is fruity, easy to drink, and very delicious. Their cutleries were silver♡ The ravioli contained foie gras and duck. The sauce probably used cep mushrooms. It was absolutely delicious. It looked tasty with potato crisps inside. I chose pumpkin soup as my starter. It was quite a generous portion, so I worried whether I’d manage the main course. The pumpkin wasn’t overly sweet, with a rather strong chestnut flavour – a taste I absolutely adore. The main course arrived! It looks delicious. The meat is still red! It was beef, so he ordered it rare. The meat had a garlic aroma. I tried a bite. The seasoning was very simple (probably just salt and pepper), which I thought was because they were confident in the taste of the meat. It was fillet of beef from cattle raised in the Aubrac Natural Park, which is quite rare to find in Provence where I live! Aubrac beef is famous, so I was delighted to be able to eat it this time! Aubrac is not far from Najac, but when I see a spot on the weather forecast map where the temperature is lower than elsewhere, it’s often Aubrac. I ordered a Najac speciality called astet najacois. This dish basically consists of pork rind, fillet and parsley. It has quite a strong garlic flavour. I think the sauce was probably mushroom sauce. This is aligot, potatoes mixed with cheese, a speciality of the Aveyron region where Najac is located. Dessert arrived! Matthieu ordered the café gourmand. Is this panna cotta? It looks like chocolate mousse. Matthieu didn’t know what this dessert was, so I tried it. It wasn’t a mousse; it was cream atop chocolate. I don’t know how to eat. This was pineapple. Apparently a pineapple flan. Looks delicious! This is mint. This is a brownie within caramel sauce, a rather sweet dessert. This is an orange. With so many sweet things, it seems just right to cleanse the palate. Then there are two chocolates and coffee. I only ordered coffee. It was absolutely delicious, and we had such a happy time. Morning, everyone! It’s day two in Najac. I’m off for a little walk on my own now. It’s started raining again ! I forgot my umbrella, so I’ll walk briskly while protecting my camera. The rain has picked up a bit. A van, probably from Najac village council, sped past me, overtaking me. When I woke up, clouds were covering the castle, but they had cleared by now. Goodness! A cat on such a rainy morning! Good morning, kitty. It’s raining, but is it alright to stay outside? May I stroke you? What a splendid leap! But I couldn’t capture the moment of the jump on video. The cat’s tail moves about a lot, doesn’t it? To me, it looked like a conductor’s baton. You are not cold? As the rain fell, it gradually grew a bit chilly. The cat has gone somewhere. The cat was hiding in the narrow street. Ah, there’s water over there. Once I was gone, the cat returned to that window again. As the rain began to fall quite heavily, we decided to head back to the hotel. If you head down from here, there’s a normal road, isn’t there. Looks like we just need to walk straight ahead! After that, the rain got even heavier, so I put my camera away and hurried back to the hotel. Then we had breakfast. I believe this was marmalade jam, and it was truly delicious! This time we visited the village of Najac. It was a shame it rained the whole time. Even the cats were out, so I thought Najack must get quite a lot of rainy days. We’re heading off to our next destination now. It was a short stay, but thank you for looking after us. If you come to Najac, I recommend this hotel! In the end, the rain didn’t stop until the very last moment. This journey continues. Next time, we’ll visit a village about 40 minutes by car from Najac, one I’ve featured twice before. Thank you for watching this video right to the end. See you in the next one!
