It’s rice harvest time Smoke from burning fields is rising over there too. I’m not saying you shouldn’t burn it at all, but it would be nice if they could decide on a day when it’s okay to burn it. A temple along the highway. The noise and vibration are intense. This is Fukushoin Temple. It was founded in 1584. I doubt our ancestors would have imagined that a highway would be built next to it. This is the Bodhisattva Kidai, a cat Buddha. This cherry tree is quite old. Next is Chofukuji Temple The stone steps are warped. It’s dangerous. 伊勢原の町を夕暮れの光の中で歩き、相模国三之宮・比々多神社にたどり着いた。一之宮は寒川神社、二之宮は川勾神社、四之宮は前鳥神社、五之宮は平塚八幡宮と、近隣に集中しているという。境内には巫女の姿があり、古社らしい静けさを感じさせてくれる。周囲では田んぼの稲刈りが進み、野焼きの煙があちこちに立ちのぼっていた。農村の営みと季節の匂いが、強烈に町の風景に刻まれている。やがて福昌院に着く。1584年の創建と伝わるこの寺は、今は高速道路に隣接し、車の騒音と振動に囲まれていた。かつて静かに祈りを捧げた場所も、時代の流れの中で姿を変えざるを得ない。境内には猫を仏とした喜帝菩薩が祀られ、長寿の桜が枝を広げ、歴史の重みを今に伝えていた。さらに進んで長福寺へ。1638年の創建とされる古刹は、石段がたわみ、木々がツタに覆われながらも、長い年月を生き抜いた佇まいを見せている。伊勢原を歩く道は、歴史と暮らし、そして祈りが重なり合い、今も町の記憶を静かに映し出していた。
