[🇲🇾Malacca] The Best Nyonya restaurant, 3 days in Melaka, Cafe, Craft
We came for late lunch after 2 hour-driving. When in Malacca, ‘Cendol’ is the only drink that matters. Hmm.. Uh..? Quite nice coconut taste. Super cold! I can’t resist ordering anything called ‘Nyonya’. It’s different from others. More coconut tastes compared to Curry Mee. Overall ok. Good place for snack time. Let’s take a quick tour of the hotel. Super clean bathroom. Comfy bed. I slept like a log and didn’t even dream. The hotel is great for the price. This will be our regular stay in Malacca. We come to the Portguese Settlement for dinner. This settlement is a home to about 1,000 people, descendants of early Portguese settlers. Not so expensive. Yeah it is. Sirloin steak! ‘Devil’s Curry’ is their signature. A charming restaurant popular with locals. People in the restaurant are very friendly. They are serving ‘Kristang’ cuisine influenced by Malay, Peranakan, Chinese and Indian. The Kristang are a creole ethnic group of people
of primarily mixed Portuguese and Malay descent. Is it any difference? Yeah a bit different from Indian curry. You don’t feel like butter. You don’t feel like butter and cumin. More pepper taste. The cream sauce is absolutely delicious. Mashed potatoes that steam hearts! My motto is Cheap, Nice and Plenty! You cover all these. I cook for you, don’t worry! He just prepares. You are the one who cook. My children all got married and gone. And then, everyday me and my wife.. ..eat, drink, eat, drink. ..and get fat. And my wife said, do somethings as you want to do. So we did small, but we started up first here. In the first people google and see, and all came here. How long already then? — Almost 4 years” In 2019 just before covid I left Buenos Aires. I was there as a head chef. This Jesus Christ statue was built by the residents in 2017. It’s a replica of ‘Rio De Janeiro’s Christ the Redeeme’ in Brazil. What a cute shop! When I went to Cuba, the food store menu is always like this. We have vanilla, chocolate and mix. Loved by people of all ages. If you lend an ear here… You’ll hear the rhythmic chatter of people fills the air. It’s oven-baked pizza! Smells so good. The chef said this festival in June is a huge event
with live band and foods. Next time, must be here! The market is on Friday to Sunday only. It’s nostalgic flea market with many vendors and shoppers. I want to buy some pants. You like converse shoes right? Visit here if you are vintage lover. How come you have appetite after heavy meal. If saying famous, then we must eat. Amazing. Do you know ‘Koliwada’? No idea at all. It’s Pakistan dish. Come inside. You can take video here. Such a grand naan oven! The secret to its fluffiness is baking it instantly in a very hot oven. Thank you for showing, boss! I thought the cheese would stretch more than 30 cm. (Guess I’ve watched too many cheese ads…) It’s so soft and fluffy, and delicious. Late-night snacks — guilty?
No, just well-deserved👍 Now almost midnight.. good night. Good morning. Breakfast is calling! One ‘Kopi O’ hot, small size, please. I think they put..look like prawn broth. Oh a bit different. It’s normal beehoon, and they put a spicy sauce. They’re not pan-frying with sauce. There is sugar on a spoon! It’s chilli sauce. It looks fish cake. Yeah it’s fish cake. First, enjoy the original taste.
Then pour chilli sauce on for a flavour change! Noodle is chewy and nice! It was happy breakfast! The temple was founded in 1795
by a Chinese Kapitan during the Dutch Malacca. There are star fruits on the ground. There is a big one overthere. Smells good. This is the direction to Bukit Cina (Chinese Hill). You can take a nice mysterious walk
across the Chinese cemetery. This is a treat after excercise. It’s nice to get away from the busy streets and feel green. ‘Bijak Laksana Tuah’,
talking about two warrior fighting. Now it’s time for lunch. We found here from Google with good reviews. This chilli sauce brings chicken rice another level. Soup is delicious. The rice balls have a unique texture
— firm yet soft and slightly sticky, , infused with the fragrant flavors of chicken and ginger. Their chicken is tender and juicy. Rice ball is so good. Chilli sauce is delicious. It’s not just good — it’s drinkably good! The roasted chicken is also very tasty. The pot looks like bubbling magma. Delicious! Compared to KL, KL is not so spicy sometimes. This is very spicy. This spicy and sour mustard vegetable stew
is called Choy Keok or Chai Boey. Originally, it was created to make use of festive leftovers. A perfect harmony of sweetness, sourness and spiciness. It’s full of collagen. It’s an edible moisturizer — maybe better than SK-●. This is old time bar. It’s old time bar. Lady boss inside. This is one of the most popular cafe in Malacca. They are selling a variety of coffee beans
from different places. They do own roasting. Malacca Liberica bean! Malacca Liberica coffee.. the coffee farm is from Malacca..? Yes. it’s from the border of Malacca. The place near Johor. It smells good! This is their signature? Signature is the sweet one. Gentle sunlight and green plants make the space feel calm. That crispy crunch makes it even more tempting. So fluffy inside and beautiful layers. Nothing goes to waste even the crumbs are appreciated. Tasting Notes: jackfruit, brown sugar, longan. Thinking which corner to start… I struck cream, like striking gold. Everyone at this café looks truly relaxed. We stopped by a furniture and home decor shop. I bought this cute mirror on sale. Only RM10! Beautiful rattan and bamboo furniture, crafted by local artisans using local materials. Looks perfect for power nap at office. This balcony chair is really adorable. I respect these craftmanship. For dinner we came this Nyonya restaurant. Nyonya All-Star stage. Stink beans mixed with sambal sauce and pineapple. Braised mixed vegetables cooked with fermented bean paste. Mixed veggies, mushroom, bean curd skin, glass noodle.. It’s treasure box! My love, ‘Cincalok’.
It is a condiment made of fermented small shrimps. Just a teaspoon of this dish goes well with three bites of rice. My another favorite, sambal petai with pineapple. Pineapples create harmony. “In Food We Trust, In Pineapple We Must 🍍” Fish stewed in a spicy and tangy gravy sauce Chef put kaffir lime.
That’s why it’s beautiful aroma! Yummmm. Very cozy and welcoming atmosphere. Let’s take a night walk around Jonker street. It’s a weekday today, so it’s quiet with less people around. I’ve been to Malacca more than five times, but this is my first time experiencing this. There are traditional beautiful Malay houses. Malacca is colorful — day and night, streets and river alike. Our last day – we cannot leave without having Nyonya dishes. My local friend recommended here. They have the 2nd floor.
It’s nice for private gathering. I feel the family’s history and heritage that have been carefully passed down through generations. It’s deep-fried eggplant with sambal chili sauce. The fried eggplant goes perfectly with the sambal sauce. Their sambal sauce is really nice. The coconut pineapple curry is so creamy! The aroma of coconut and
various spices and herbs is wonderful. This is the best Nyonya curry ever. It tastes curry leaf. It’s like Nyonya style of Kam Heong Chicken. Spices are garlic, chilli… curry leaf.. star anise, lemon grass.. Oh there is galangal ginger as well. So fragrant.
I’d buy it if they sold it as a perfume! I’m full, but my dessert stomach is still empty. You can see the richness of Gula Melaka,
palm sugar from this brown color. Wow super sweet. Grateful to the chef for letting us taste their family dishes. They sell Gula Melaka, a must in Nyonya cooking. ‘Murukku’, Indian crunchy snack.
I got it for my dad since I’m going back my country. This is rice dumplings made
with glutinous rice called ‘Chang’. He loves it, so grabbed it immediately. Nyonya cuisine is definitely world heritage. What is your favorite Nyonya restaurant? The last stop is… The roastery is located just slightly outside the old town. It is managed entirely by a coffee connoisseur. You can open as well. Coffee beans from China’s Yunnan province. I tried one time and love its fruity taste. This is more gentle flavor. Highly recommended if you are hand-drip coffee lover. I go for Kenya coffee bean. ..and Guatemala Geisha for hand-drip coffee. They also offer chocolate crafted from Malaysian cacao. A little on the expensive side,
but that’s what makes it special. Coffee on the rock
ーbrewing coffee directly over ice. so the coffee keeps its aroma and doesn’t get watered down. The melting point is not the same. First time to have iced coffee in a tea cup! Nice aroma. It’s my first time to try Geisha coffee bean. So refreshing, with a floral finish that stays in my mouth for long. We hope you enjoyed Malacca trip with us.
