On this Risa’s trip, we took advantage of our layover at Cheongju Airport, which has seen a recent surge in passenger numbers, to visit the town of Cheongju. This was my first time at the airport. It’s 11:30 AM, but we ‘re taking a 4:15 PM flight back to Narita, so we have some time to explore the city. We have just under five hours, but since it’s an international flight, we’ll be arriving about two hours early, so we’ll have a little over two hours to explore the town. So, we decided to take this city bus into the city. I think T-Money Cards are accepted, so we’ll use that. There’s a luggage storage area on the far left, so we left our bags there. The bus is quite old. Yeah. It has a certain charm. The seats are very soft. I’m sure I’ll sleep soundly. It ‘s a decent town. There are quite a few vacant stores, and it feels a bit rundown. So, two hours should be just right. Oh, and there ‘s a cute soft serve ice cream shop here. I’m heading to lunch now . I’m going to eat the mushroom stew, a must- try when you visit Cheongju . Cheongju is said to be the birthplace of samgyeopsal, and there’s even a magnificent golden pig like this on Unseo Taeji Street. This is it. Oh, it looks crowded, but they said it was really delicious. They were so kind. “This is spicy miso, and the soup isn’t spicy right now, so once it boils, add it little by little and adjust the spiciness as you eat (probably).” It looked delicious. Let’s have the kimchi inside. Yes . That seafood broth is really strong. It’s kimchi with a sour taste. The wait is amazing. Hot! Wow. There’s lots of green onions. Green onions, potatoes, beef, mushrooms, maybe shiitake mushrooms? And this is glass noodles. Looks so good . Here you go. Looks so good. Amazing. Let’s eat. Delicious. Yes. This is something new, with ingredients that are bursting with broth, a taste I’ve never tried before. Yes. But these shiitake mushrooms have a very familiar flavor. The shiitake mushrooms and beef give off a really nice broth. Delicious. It’s my first time eating it, but it has a nostalgic taste. You should definitely try this . More and more people are coming. I’ll announce the price as it’s being cooked . 25,000 won (about 2,600 yen). Amazing. About 2,500 yen. Really? I had this meal for less than 3,000 yen . Wow, it was delicious. I’ve never eaten anything like it. Right? The pepper is really tasty. Yes. The pepper was really good. This is a tiny little market reminiscent of Katsuura, southern Japan. Are we walking towards Homeplus? Yes. It’s written as Seomun Market. It has a really local feel. Oh, maybe this is Samgyeopsal Street. Yes. Oh, I see. Yes. So matsutake mushrooms aren’t really a market? No, but this is a place that’s basically called a market. It seems like it used to be like this, but now it looks like this. Have all the young people gone to Seoul? At my beloved Homeplus. Ah, Homeplus. Yay. Homeplus has an incredible selection. This is the only one in my favorite series. I never thought they’d have so many. Oh, there it is, there it is. This is my recommendation. Wow. What beautiful weather. From here, I’ll take the 747 bus back to the airport. Bye-bye Cheongju. It’s 2:50pm now. It’s pretty close, but I’m back at Cheongju Airport again. I’ll pick up my luggage and check in now and head inside. It’s a pretty small airport, so I’m pushing it close, but I think it should be fine. Check-in is here for T’way, Chinese airlines, and Aero.K. I was able to check in. It looks like I’ll have no trouble with the time. Now, I’ll go through duty-free and head inside. So, the first floor of this airport has a little cafe and a CU convenience store, and a small food court on the second floor, but that’s the only place to eat, so if you have time, I think you’ll have more options for food if you go out. Is the duty-free area here? Call here. Oh, here it is. They told me to call here. I spoke in amazing Korean, and even though I didn’t say anything, the person there said, “I’m on my way,” in beautiful Japanese. It seems like they don’t have a machine, so they’ll do it here. I got my tax-free. I wrote my name, passport number, credit card number, and email address on the receipt I received, handed it to the man, who stamped it and said the refund would be on my card in 2-3 months. It’s not like the machine where you get cash, but rather a refund on your card. VISA, Mastercard, JCB, etc. are accepted, but American Express is not accepted for the refund. But it seems like it’s okay as long as it’s a different card from the one you bought it with. Okay, let’s go inside. I went inside. It’s a really tiny airport. There’s really only a small duty-free area like this. We got in in no time at all. Yeah. All that’s left is to buy a coffee and wait a bit until the time comes. There’s just one tiny cafe. The price is the same as outside. Hmm, what should I do? Strawberry milk again… Cheongju Airport is also used as a military facility, so you can’t take pictures outside the window during takeoff and landing, so be careful.
