Riding a SHAKY Local Bus Through Remote Karakalpakstan
Riding a local small bus get ready for a shaky ride! with a smoking driver and only with local people through the Kyzylkum Desert and then change to shared taxi from the capital of Karakalpakstan, Nukus to the historic town of Khiva. Enjoy the ride! Welcome to Nukus, the capital of the autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan. It’s the sixth-largest city in Uzbekistan, located near the vast Kyzylkum Desert and within reach of the Aral Sea. The city is not crowded with tourists and retains a peaceful and authentic atmosphere. We start today’s journey by taking a taxi to the southern bus station, which is approximately 6km (3.7mi) from the center of Nukus. The ride took 10 minutes. Almost all the cars here are white. We met many friendly people in Nukus, happy to see tourists. The bus station looks nice and modern from this side, but it will be a little different on the other side. So let’s take a look at it. Inside, this station is completely empty. And very quite. But was an employee at the ticket office. However, other ticket offices were closed. And again, a great map of Uzbekistan like on all train stations throughout Uzbekistan You can also find the bus schedule from Nukus here. Our bus goes to Urgench. Okay, here we end our tour of the station from the inside and take a look at the platforms. There are large long-distance buses that go to Tashkent or Almaty (1900km / 1180mi)! But today we’ll take a different bus. There is almost nothing around this station. This is all we found on the platform. And the restaurant on the corner looks closed. There are also friendly dogs here. Toilet for 2000 sum (€0,14/$0,16). Another ticket office on the side of the station. There is also a supermarket and taxis right next door. There are starting to be more people here. Even our bus has arrived. This is our little bus that we will be riding in today! It is bus № VSH 748 on the route Nukus – Urgench. And it’s an Isuzu SAZ np 26. With storage space in the back. Let’s see what it looks like in this small local bus. The seats are in a 2+2 layout and 5 seats in the back. Extra 2 seats next to the driver. And current information. Tickets are purchased from the bus driver for €2.50 ($2.90) 35,000 sum. Departure from Nukus on time at 10:00. Let’s look at today’s map route. Today’s journey to Urgench is scheduled to take 2 hours and 35 minutes, covering approximately 160 km (99,4 mi). Then another 30 km (18,6mi) to Khiva. So let’s start the journey! It will be very bumpy and only with local people, you won’t find any tourists here. We stopped right after 2 minutes on the side of the road. We leave Nukus and enter the edge of the Kyzylkum Desert. Unfortunately, on the day we traveled, there was no direct train connection between Nukus and Khiva. Thank you! And don’t forget to subscribe so you don’t miss new videos every week! It’s starting to get a little bumpy! Many fully loaded cars are parked by the road. Music played almost the entire ride. We enter the Amudarya District. Amu Darya Railway and Automobile Bridge over the Amu Darya River. Residents of Amudarya District had to travel by car through Urgench and Beruni to reach Nukus, adding about 180 kilometres to the journey. By train, they had to cross the bridge at Hazorasp, east of Khorezm. The new route will save around 2 hours of travel time. Kipchak village (Qipchoq). This is where the bus got full. Many people here work in the fields. We are entering the Xorazm Region. White cars only. Here in Uzbekistan, drivers still smoke inside while driving. The overtaking situation can be a bit chaotic sometimes. Arriving in Urgench. Urgench is a city in northwestern Uzbekistan, serving as the capital of Xorazm (Khorezm) Region. Modern Urgench is a Soviet-style city with cotton motifs adorning many objects, from street lights to apartment houses. It is also our final stop where we get off. The journey was 2 hours 35 minutes long. We arrived at 12:35. From here there are a few options for getting to Khiva. We have plenty of time here, so let’s see what the options are. The first option is a trolleybus that runs between two cities (Urgench – Khiva), which is interesting. Trolleybuses leave every 30 minutes, and the journey takes about 60 minutes. It’s not the fastest option, but the ticket costs about 4,000 sum ($0.32 / €0.28). Now let’s look at another option. All options are within walking distance. There are shared taxis next to the bus station. The price is 20,000sum (€1,45/$1,67). The journey takes approximately 40 minutes. There is a bus station on Shevchenko Street from where buses also leave for Khiva. But the time of departure was not the best for us. We also tried calling a taxi from the Yandex Go app. The price is 162,000 sum ($13.50/€11.60) since you also have to pay the driver for the return trip. In the end, we decided on a shared taxi. When the car is full, it’s time to go. It’s an overall comfortable ride. The road is mostly straight. After a 40-minute drive, welcome to Khiva. It was an interesting ride, we tried something different. If you would like to see a video from Khiva, check out our other channel “Letsgobylands Vlog”.
