This time, we will visit Misawa City, located in the eastern part of Aomori Prefecture. The population is about 40,000. It is a town with the US military base in the north of Japan. In addition to the population of 40,000, about 10,000 people related to the US military in Japan live here . This town, also known as Misawa, the town of the sky, is equipped with the latest stealth fighter F35A and F16 fighter reconnaissance aircraft, and serves as the most important strategic base in Northeast Asia, responsible for monitoring North Korea and Russia. Misawa Base is the only strategic base in the Tohoku region jointly used by the US Air Force, Navy, and Air Self-Defense Force. Therefore, the local economy is also heavily supported by base-related jobs and grants. American culture is also deeply rooted in the town, and many US soldiers live in the town and support the economy of Misawa City . The sight of English signs and American food stores lined up is a unique feature of Misawa, and it is a very unique town where military, economy, culture and daily life coexist. This time, we visited Misawa City in Aomori Prefecture, where you can experience the American lifestyle while in Japan. Please read to the end. So, I just arrived in Misawa. I was in Rokusho Village, Aomori Prefecture, until just now, and it’s about 40km from there, so it’s pretty close. It’s about an hour’s drive to Misawa. I think I mentioned it in the narration, but I wanted to go to Misawa sometime. Speaking of Misawa, it’s famous for the United States . The US Air Force. The base is on the front line in the Tohoku area, and it’s a town that mainly protects the base together with the US military, which monitors the Northeastern area, such as Russia . So it’s a town where a lot of American soldiers live. It’s the only place in Tohoku that has an American village. I just happened to arrive at a roadside station called Misawa Kureuma Park . After this, I’d like to go and see the base and the town . It’s the only place in the Tohoku area, and it’s a bit unusual because of its connection with the US military . I was a bit interested in it, so I came here. First of all, I stopped off at the roadside station for a quick toilet break, but would you like to take a look inside? I’ve never been to an American town like this except Okinawa, so I really wanted to go there. There’s a flag here, too, but there’s Misawa Air Hose Burger and things like that. I also think there’s a lot of American cuisine, like the curry from the Self-Defense Forces, so I’d like to try some of that too . Yes. Actually, I think I took this video today, the 13th of June. I ‘m going to America in a few days. I’m thinking right now that I don’t have to go out of my way to eat American food when I’m going to America, but I’d like to try some. Yes. Video-wise. Hey, I’m going into the roadside station. There’s quite a lot of food here. There’s no one there at all. Is this the Air Hose Burger? Well, there are other things too. I’m sure you don’t have to eat here. Yes, it’s nice. Yes. They sell black garlic from Misawa. It’s pretty expensive. To be honest, there’s not much to see, but there were horses, so I went to look at them. This is a really big roadside station. Misawa must be thriving thanks to the US military base. I’m sure that’s true. It’s the same in Okinawa. If the base was gone, everyone would lose their jobs, so they’re being supported by it. But there are many people who are against it. Oh, there’s Koma-san. Good morning. How are you? I’ve been there. I used Misawa Airport once a long time ago . There was a hot spring at the airport, and I didn’t have time to go, but there was a museum-like thing, and also an observation deck where you could watch fighter planes take off from the base, so I’m going there now . So before I went to Misawa Air Base, there was an aviation museum, or maybe an aeronautical science museum, so I stopped by for a bit. It’s a really impressive building. There’s a light commemorating the first nonstop flight across the Pacific Ocean . The Japanese flag and an American purifier. The ties with America are strong, aren’t they? These three are the only joint operational bases with the US Air Force in Japan. This base was extremely important, especially during the Cold War . It’s still important today. It’s more impressive than I imagined, and I’m surprised. It costs a lot of money . Oh, it’s free to ride. There’s a bus called the Grutto Bus , which can take you from Misawa Station to almost all the main places in Misawa . After this, I’d like to go to Sky Plaza Misawa, which is also known as Americamura, America Square. Yes. There are hot springs, too. There’s the Shimin no Mori Onsen Yujo. I’m sorry that you can’t move around on weekdays. It’s tough for ordinary working people, but it’s empty. When I come to the countryside, I feel very comfortable. This is a famous one. Well , I’m going to Misawa Airport Onsen. Awesome fighter planes flying. The sound is incredible. So I went in the hot spring. It felt really good. It was a real, slippery hot spring. The water was so smooth and slippery, it was amazing. Misawa Airport Hot Springs is great. Anyway, after this, I’m going to have lunch in Americamura, America, where there are a lot of soldiers. So I parked the car in the parking lot, and now I’m going to walk around the center of Misawa, the American-like place, and there’s a restaurant I want to go to, an American hamburger restaurant called Big Bad Burger, and I’m going to go there for lunch. This area is near the base. The store signs are written in alphabet, and there are a lot of cafes, like cafes and bars. Is this also a coffee shop? The weather is nice today, so it seems like they’re doing a lot of training, which is amazing. I can hear the sound of fighter jets. This is it. Sky Plaza Misawa. I’ll take a look at it later . This is the place that looks like Americamura . It’s the center of this area, isn’t it? It’s definitely a bit American. I guess you could say it’s Okinawa-like. That’s what it feels like. They’re flying all around the base . This area is like a foreign country. There are really a lot of families of those soldiers and Americans walking around. There are shops right at the entrance to the base. Yes, it’s interesting because it’s my first time here. This is a curry restaurant. [Music] Everyone is coming into the base. The car is here. Big Bad Burger. Let’s go in. We went into the restaurant. The soldiers were already eating. I ordered the most famous Big Bad Burger. And, I chose oolong tea for my drink. And so we arrived. It wasn’t as big as I thought it would be. I think I could eat it. By the way, this is 1800 yen, and with a drink it’s about 2200 yen. It’s an American price. But it looks delicious. The fries are delicious. [Music] Yeah. It’s delicious. It’s really juicy. I’ll be in America in a few days, and this is already America. [Music] [Music] No, it was really delicious. I’m very satisfied. As expected, hamburgers are good. Well, there are other steak restaurants and similar places around here, so I think I’ll come back at night. Then I’ll go to Sky Plaza. I’d like to eat something sweet. It has a bit of a Don Quijote feel, but this is a pizza place. The second floor is full of anime goods and it’s like a Don Quijote. It’s an American supermarket. Interesting. I like seeing things like this. The bento is big. I guess it’s American size after all. That’s nice. The sweets are also commercial size. They sell Silson Cider , but I think it’s cheaper than buying it in Korea. It’s about 200 yen at convenience stores. Like 2000 yen. This looks super delicious. I think I’ll buy some black truffle and white truffle potato chips. Oh, this is the juice they often sell in Hawaii and Guam. This is delicious, but if you drink it, you’ll get diabetes. I think it has a lot of sugar in it. But it’s still delicious. Potato chips with a lot of truffle flavor. Well, last year they sold a lot of Banco, but you don’t see that much in Japan. They also have Caviar. I was really hesitant just now, but I decided to buy this. Let’s take a look at the store next to this one, Nakai. It’s a normal liquor store. They only sell sake. So I just randomly go to a different store. This is, well, they’re recruiting base staff. Would you like to work at Misawa Air Base ? Recruiting employees of the US military in Japan. This is almost like working as a national civil servant . Yes. This is quite popular. I hear the competition is high. Well, it will end when the base is gone, but I don’t think it will go away, so it’s a stable job. It probably seems more fun than working for a Japanese company. Yeah. It seems a bit relaxed. Well, it ‘s base work though. Yes. This is Misawa Air Base, the US military in Japan, a US military air base. It’s shared with the Self-Defense Forces, isn’t it? It’s a very important strategic base with the Misawa Air Base of the National Guard. Inside, there’s Subway, Burger King, a supermarket, and 24-hour restaurants, but if you know someone who works at this base , you can enter, but if you don’t, of course you can’t enter . It was the same with the hamburger shop I mentioned earlier , but basically, they write things in English because the US military often come here. It’s probably hard to understand. I couldn’t pay in US dollars at this Family Mart, but the restaurant I mentioned earlier seemed to accept payments in US dollars. I still have a lot of time, so I’m going to walk around Misawa Station and see what it’s like. Well, the shopping district is pretty rusty, isn’t it? The art on this shutter is very American. Well, there aren’t many shutter arts like this in Aomori. I’m sure they’re doing it on purpose. Once you leave the main street and there are no more shopping streets, you suddenly feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere. It’s about a 2.5km walk from Americamura to the station, which is good exercise, but it’s a bit far from what I expected. The common sense is a bit overseas, isn’t it? There are English signs and food delivery signs that you don’t see in other towns. This is Misawa Station. It’s pretty big. Well, there doesn’t seem to be anything around the station. It must be tough to walk between the stations with luggage in the center. I think it’s better to take a taxi. There is a restaurant that you can see on your right right now , and they serve ramen and set meals. This place must be pretty popular. When you look up Misawa gourmet food and delicious food, this casual atmosphere often comes up. The Kitadon and ramen should be good. However, I don’t think they’re doing the Kitadon anymore because it’s not the season . It’s like this. There were almost no shops around the station. I thought there might be a place to get coffee, but there wasn’t. Well, I’ll go back. It just so happened that the cafe was busy at that time, so I couldn’t go in. First, I had to return the rental car, so I returned it and went to check into the hotel. This area is pretty nice too. There are a lot of local izakayas. It ‘s not really American at all, though. On this night, there are a lot of snack bars around here, but there are also izakayas. There are a lot of yakitori restaurants too. I’d like to visit. I returned to Misawa Airport again. My rental car was at Toyota Rent a Car at the airport, so I took a taxi from there to the hotel. So I stayed at the hotel. This is called Aurum Misawa, and it’s probably the nicest place in Misawa. It’s a new city hotel, or rather a business hotel. Let’s check in. It’s still early, but I think I can do it. So, I can’t check in yet, so I’ll kill time by working until it’s time. There are free drinks, so it’s nice to have a lot of drinks. The hotel does not allow smoking in the front room , but there is a smoking area, and there is a really nice coin laundry . So, check-in is complete . This is it. 112. Then I entered the room. Oh, it’s nice. It looks nice. It’s really nice. I like the size. It’s not too big, not too small, it’s spacious enough, so it’s nice. It’s like this. Well, there’s a really big TV. It’s made by Sharp . The air purifier is also made by Sharp. There are two bottles of water from Mt. Fuji, and oh, there’s also Dotour coffee. And there’s all the amenities at the sink, yes. Like this. There are all the towels. And it’s separate from the toilet, isn’t it? Properly separate . Oh, it’s nice. Oh, I’ll make sure to fill it with hot water today. There was all Lux shampoo and such. This is the toilet. It’s great that it’s separated. They also seem to put a lot of effort into breakfast, and this time I chose breakfast included, and even if you don’t use this pouch this time, you can come and use it another time. It doesn’t have an expiration date. I haven’t heard anything like that recently. There are a lot of tickets now that are definitely only valid for that day . Also, they start breakfast at 5:30 in the morning, which I thought was really early. I think they probably time it to match the flight. I’m also taking a flight from Misawa to Tokyo later, and there should be some flights that are pretty early, like 7 or 9 in the morning, so I think they start at 5:30 to match the customers . Well, that’s a blessing. It would be a waste to get breakfast and then not be able to eat it because you can’t make it in time . I’m grateful. So, it’s a really nice room . Would it be rude to say that this level is amazing in Misawa? I think Aomori and Hachimantai are more urban, but I didn’t think there would be such a nice city hotel or business hotel in Misawa, so I made a reservation right away, and it was about 12,000 yen per night with breakfast. It would have been more expensive on weekends. Like 18,000 yen. This time it was Friday, so it was still a little cheaper, but even so, it might be a little expensive compared to the average prices around there, but I thought it was totally worth it if I thought about staying in Tokyo or somewhere like that. The Rokushomura was about 7,500 yen , but the quality is completely different. Right. Also , there aren’t many in Misawa. There are chain hotels like Route Inn, but it seems like there aren’t any like A or Toyoko. Are there any? I couldn’t find any as far as I looked. So I think it’s a hotel in a very valuable position. And the surroundings are the Haka or American Plaza, so it’s really nice. I think I can relax . I’m going to work on various things in that room until the evening and relax, then I’ll look for something delicious to eat at the end, and I’d like to go to Misawa Gourmet . I want to eat Misawa Gourmet. It’s 5:30 in the evening now, and I want to go to enjoy my last meal in Misawa. I ate something American for lunch, well, a hamburger, so I thought I ‘d like to eat some Japanese food, or rather seafood in Misawa, and the nearby izakaya called Shokushibo seems to be quite popular, and the reviews are good , so I’d like to eat a lot there. There are quite a few bars, aren’t there? There are a lot of snacks. This izakaya Shokushibo looks good , doesn’t it? So I went inside the restaurant. It has a really nice atmosphere. [Music] So I ordered Hon no Sashimi. It also has fatty tuna. And all of this is just over 1100 yen. Isn’t it so cheap? I added squid. That was 700 yen. And then I had tempura and stewed young salmon. What was that tuna sashimi? The bluefin tuna was so good. [Music] Well, there was a huge amount of tuna sashimi, and it was thick-sliced and all for 1180 yen . 1 year ago. Amazing. Everything I ate was delicious. I was so impressed. Aomori is the best . Wow, it’s amazing you can eat so cheaply. Oh, by the way, the total came to less than 5000 yen. I ordered a lot. I ordered everything . This time, I ordered a lot, I ordered whatever I wanted, and it was under 5000 yen. I also had two drinks. Amazing. And there was quite a lot. I’m very satisfied. Wow, it’s really the best. I’ve only been taking baths since I came to Aomori. Well, this hotel is good too. No, it’s fun to eat delicious food and it ‘s great. Everyone should definitely come to this restaurant. That’s right. It seems like a good place to stay. There are convenience stores in the area where I’m staying now, and there are a lot of restaurants and cafes, and there are a lot of Americans, and when you’re tired of human relationships, especially people in cities, people who live in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Misawa, you almost never meet someone you know . That’s right, so in a hotel like this, even if you stop in Tokyo, a business hotel usually costs about 10,000 yen, so if you think about it, it’s about that much, and the town is close to Misawa Airport by plane, so if you come to Misawa to work or stay in, take a hot spring bath, eat tuna, eat American food, and laze around, it seems like a good place to do that . And the rice is apparently that good domestic rice. Yes. It’s all-you-can-eat. It’s expensive now. You see, it feels like a wonderful breakfast and I’m happy. Let’s eat. [Music] Yeah. In terms of my own history, I’m leaving Japan after this to go to America and Canada , but before I go, I decided to make a point of staying in the only American town in Tohoku. It’s this restaurant called Aomori Kaku Q. Well, I’ll go in and eat the sea urchin bowl now. So, this is Aomori Kaku’s sea urchin and scallop bowl, and it was 2800 yen. Look . The amount of sea urchin is not stingy, the bowl is big, and there’s a lot of sea urchin on it. This might be the first time in my life to eat so much sea urchin at once. And Oma’s raw sashimi of bluefin tuna and black tuna. They also put some medium fatty tuna on top. This was 1600 yen for a single dish. It would be unthinkable in Tokyo. The sea urchin bowl and this black tuna and bluefin tuna sashimi. I’m so happy. Well, I didn’t like tuna that much in the past, but recently I’ve started to think it’s really delicious, especially bluefin tuna, which is a luxury item. It seems like there’s a lot going on this year , and it’s pretty cheap in the market, so I ‘m happy to be able to eat it at such a reasonable price. This restaurant is also very popular, and if you don’t make a reservation, you can’t even get in for lunch. The raw bluefin tuna. It melts in your mouth. You can tell by looking at the face, but it was absolutely delicious. The sea urchin bowl is also this one, and you can find it in Tsukiji, Tokyo, but it’s really stingy for inbound tourists. The bowl is small, and it’s domestic sea urchin . I’ve forgotten if it’s Aomori sea urchin, or Bafun sea urchin. I ‘m happy to be able to eat so much, and for this price. The miso soup that came with it was also Aomori-style miso soup. It seeped into my body. And the chef also recommended the exquisite fries, which were fresh Aomori kesan, fried half-cooked , and apparently this is the specialty of the restaurant, so I ordered some too. It was 450 yen. Of course, it was the fresh taste you can eat as sashimi, and it was just fried quickly . But this was incredibly delicious, and I thought it was a dish you should definitely try if you come to the restaurant. Well, Misawa is having a festival today. I’m leaving at the best time.
