Take a ferry trip to the Amami Islands. Each island has its own unique charm. The first stop is Amami Oshima. Hello! I’ve come to Kagoshima. I’m about to travel around the Amami Islands by ferry. I intend to visit every island the ship calls at. First, I’ll take a bus from the station to Kagoshima Port. Kagoshima is famous for its pork and sweet potatoes. I have a little time before the bus departs. Let’s grab a light bite. Cold baked sweet potato and black pork cutlet for $4. Now, let’s head to the bus stop in front of the station. The bus departs at 4:30 p.m. It takes 20 minutes to the port and costs $2. The ship will depart at 6:00 p.m. The ship will call at four islands before arriving at Naha. This video covers the journey up to Amami Oshima. I’ll be uploading the rest of the trip soon! Sakurajima is the symbol of Kagoshima. Let’s enter the ferry terminal. The ticket counter and boarding gate are on the 3rd floor. There’s no restaurant, but the shops are open. You can see Sakurajima from here too. This ferry pass costs $135 for unlimited rides over two weeks. It is valid only for second-class cabins. However, private rooms are also available for an additional fee. Four vessels operate on this ferry route. The ship I am boarding now is the “Akebono.” Next to it, the “Queen Coral Cross” is docked, scheduled to depart tomorrow. The Akebono was built in 2008 and has a length of 145 meters. It’s not a new ship, but it’s sailing without any problems. This passageway connects to the ship’s 4th floor. The passenger area is on the 4th and 5th floors. The 4th floor features an information desk, a shop, and a restaurant. This time, the second-class cabins are almost completely full. I upgraded my cabin to a private room for an additional $120. This is the second-class cabin. After that, the cabin was extremely crowded. This is the first-class private room. It has two bunk beds and accommodates up to four people. The living area has a TV and shelves. The window faces the sea. It shows some age, but the interior is clean. The bedding looks comfortable. The bed has a storage shelf, lighting, and outlet. The bed has curtains too. It might be a bit cramped for four people. Tea sets, towels, yukata robes, etc. Unfortunately, there’s no bathroom, just a washbasin. It’s a private room suited for families or groups. There is a large closet next to the door. Well, it’s almost time to set sail. Exit to the external deck from the 5th-floor lobby. The external deck spans the 5th and 6th floors. On some remote islands, passengers board the ferry using these stairs. This ferry is operated by A-Line Ferry. The “A” stands for Amami Oshima. Staff arrive at the bollards on the wharf. The sun has already set. Sakurajima overlooks this ship. A forklift removes steel plates. Stowing the vehicle ramp. Forklifts play a major role on this ferry route. They also help with rope pulling and staff movement. It is now 6:00 p.m. The ship departed on schedule. The ship will arrive in Amami Oshima at 5:00 a.m. The ship will then arrive in Naha at 7:00 p.m. Kagoshima Port, now completely dark. The sound of the ship’s whistle echoes along the wharf. A low crescent moon hangs in the western sky. I will board the Queen Coral Cross the day after tomorrow. The ship passes the lighthouses into Kagoshima Bay. Let’s head back inside the ship. I’ll have dinner at the restaurant on the 4th floor. Dinner service is only 50 minutes. Most are set meals. Black Pork Cutlet Set Meal is $12. Orion Beer from Okinawa is $2. Let’s check out the shop next to the information desk. It’s a small shop, but the selection is extensive. Payment is cash only. Let’s explore the ship. There’s no large bath, only showers are available. It shows its age, but it’s clean. You’ll need to bring your own shampoo and soap. The toilets do not have bidets. There some vending machines next to the restaurant. The restaurant is always open. 4th floor lobby and 5th floor lobby. 5th floor smoking room. We will arrive in Amami before dawn. I’ll be going to bed early tonight. Amami is famous for its brown sugar shochu. Good night… Well, the time is 4:30 a.m. The ship enters Naze Port on Amami Oshima. Amami Oshima has a population of 60,000 and an area of 712 square kilometers. It is the third largest remote island in Japan. The central town of Amami Oshima is Naze. The ship docks on the starboard side. The crew member casts the line from the ship to the wharf. The wharf staff connect the rope to the forklift. The forklift pulls the rope up from the sea. This is the first rope on the stern side. Wind up the rope and bring the ship closer to the wharf. The gangway connects at a lower level than Kagoshima Port. The time is 4:50 a.m. We have arrived 10 minutes ahead of schedule. Now, let’s disembark. This private room is a bit too expensive for one person. At this price, I wish they’d include a private bathroom. Quite a few passengers are disembarking at Amami. Taking the escalator down to the lower deck. We disembark from a different exit than the one used for boarding in Kagoshima. The port call time in Amami is 50 minutes. The next port of call is Tokunoshima. I will be traveling to Tokunoshima by another ferry tomorrow. It’s a spacious ferry terminal. There used to be ferry routes from Amami to Tokyo and Osaka as well. Let’s see the Akebono off as it departs. Slowly reversing while making a 180-degree turn. There are also air routes to Amami Oshima. But this ferry route transports most supplies, This ship supports the lives of the people of Amami. Tomorrow, I will board the Queen Coral Cross from here. Today, I stay overnight on Amami Oshima. Dawn is approaching. A 15-minute walk from Naze Port. Let’s get a rental car to get around the island. The rental fee is $30 for 6 hours. The sandy beach is deserted in the early morning. This is Miyakosaki Cape, known as a scenic spot. Get out of the car and walk for about 20 minutes. The path gradually becomes steeper. Be careful, the path is slippery. There’s an observation deck along the way. Next to it is a simple toilet. Let’s go up to the observation deck. From here, we’ll walk about another 500 meters. The scent of the sea grows stronger. Nature is abundant around here. The Amami rabbit, a natural monument, also inhabits this area. The entire area is covered in Okinawa bamboo. The cape juts out into the East China Sea. The sea breeze keeps the bamboo from growing tall. That’s why this unique landscape came into being. This location is often used for filming dramas. Amami Oshima is home to a very large number of endemic species. And part of the island is registered as a World Natural Heritage site. Materiya Falls is also part of the World Heritage Site. The waterfall’s name means “sun shining.” This waterfall changes its appearance depending on the time of day. Saigo Takamori, hero of the Meiji Restoration, stayed in Amami for three years. It was a period of waiting in the wings for him. This is a recreation of the house he lived in. The community center next door is a polling place for today’s mayoral election. Saigo Takamori married Aikana in Amami. Their descendants currently live in Kagoshima. This is the well Aikana used. Now, let’s have lunch. This is an Amami chicken rice restaurant. Amami chicken rice is $8. Enjoy it with chicken broth poured over it. Chicken sashimi is $4. Next, i visited “Tanaka Isson’s Final Residence.” Tanaka Isson is a painter who loved Amami’s flora and fauna. He passed away at the age of 69 shortly after moving into this house. I returned the rental car and headed to the hotel. I stopped by the port on the way. This is a Japan Coast Guard patrol vessel. Equipped with a 30mm cannon. I’d love to board it someday. The is the ferry terminal where we disembarked early in the morning. Seeing it like this, the boarding bridge is huge. There were a few fishermen. Today’s hotel is Big Marine Amami. I visited a nearby gym before check-in. Guests can use it freely. Check-in starts at 3 p.m. The hot water in the large bath is artificial hot spring water. Single room is $50. The “Toshima 2” bound for the Tokara Islands is docked across the bay. Time flows slowly here. It’s also used for group sports training camps. A foot bath is installed in the courtyard. Dinner at the hotel restaurant. Buffet is $12. That’s all for this Amami Oshima episode. Thank you for watching! See you next time for the Tokunoshima episode!

Nice
Great sharing. I love it as always. Thanks. 👍👍👍😍😍😍
Hi! I love your videos! I have a question. Where do you buy tickets for the buses (for example the one you took to the port)? Is there a separate ticket office or can you use a Suica card on the bus? Greetings from Europe!
I enjoy each of your videos, thank you so much, but, somehow, I was very moved by this one, when at the Well of Aikana. Thank you. Nihon ga suki!
Sagenhaft, aush heute wieder, was Sie uns zeigen.
You gave me great pleasure, my dear Japanese friend, with the sight of palm trees, bamboo and waves. It's a nice change from the already chilly autumn weather in Poland😃 Thank you very much for the video, and I'm patiently waiting for the next part🥰
Love the walk to the top man is not the master of nature or at least not bamboo
OMG the waterfalls and scenery were beautiful. All the food looked tasty both in the ferry and in the island. Noticed the military disembarking and then u you showed the coat guard ship so I'm assuming that is why they were there. Looking forward to the next one! 🐺
Such a beautiful place! Can’t wait till the 2nd episode is uploaded! Thanks for a wonderful video 👍🏻☺️
Great trip. Finally, after long time you are doing Ferry trip to Okinawa or vice versa without visiting islands in between because of strict ship schedule and only passengers who disembark at designated island can got off, this time you are doing it, literally Island hopping. Something interesting about this trip beside every island you visiting is the ferry ticket, because there's unlimited ferry pass for a trip between Kagoshima and Okinawa (of course in Second Class and up to two weeks usage), something uncommon for a long distance ferry trip like this. Coconut tree on the island meaning the island is warm and got plenty of rain at certain months. Can't wait for next part into next island.
Wonderful place ,thanks for the video,❤😊
