【25年9月ポルトガル旅行】コインブラの主要観光スポットを1日でまわるコース|金額・アクセス・予約方法紹介|ジョアニナ図書館・大聖堂|Coimbra, Portugal【SUB/アフレコ/海外旅行】

Good morning. It’s the morning of my third day in Portugal. Today, I’m taking the train from Porto to Coimbra. I’m traveling with the Portuguese Railway (CP), and I’ve explained how to reserve tickets in advance in the video about Porto. When I traveled from Lisbon to Porto on the first day, the car numbers were easy to find, but this time it was a bit difficult. I thought I was in the wrong car, but I had to move inside. However, there were many other people in the same situation, and the aisles were extremely crowded. And our seats were already occupied, so when I asked, they said, “Ours are already taken, so just sit wherever’s available.” When I traveled from Lisbon to Porto, my ticket and passport were checked on the train, but this time there was no such thing. I’m now boarding the bus. The Portuguese Railways train from Porto arrives at Coimbra B Station, but Coimbra Station is closer to the tourist center, including Coimbra University. You used to be able to travel this section by train, but it no longer runs. Instead, a free shuttle bus operates. There’s a sign inside the station saying “This way for the bus,” so I follow it. This shuttle bus is quite frequent, which is helpful. The next bus arrives within 10 minutes during the day on weekdays, and even on weekends, it runs every 15 minutes, making it extremely convenient. As I was looking around the bus stop, unsure if I was really there, a couple nearby called out to me. Portugal is home to some truly kind people. The bus ride from Coimbra Station B to Coimbra Station took six minutes. First, I leave my large luggage at the hotel. Coimbra is Portugal’s third-largest city after Lisbon and Porto, and is famous for being home to the University of Coimbra, Portugal’s oldest university. Since I’m leaving Coimbra tomorrow morning, today is my only day to sightsee. I want to make the most of it. I spotted some Pasteis de Tentugal, a local pastry from Tentugal, a town relatively close to Coimbra, and I’d like to try some. The outside crust was crispy, and the cream inside was delicious and not too sweet. First, we went to the Santa Cruz Monastery.
It’s a historic monastery built in the 12th century. The azulejos in the chapels and cloisters are so typical of Portugal. We spent about an hour and a half there. Next, we headed to the Old Cathedral. This Old Cathedral is also a historic building. Like the Santa Cruz Monastery, construction began in the 12th century. Its Romanesque style incorporates elements of ancient Roman architecture. In the 16th century, it was slightly remodeled, with the addition of tile decorations and large doors, but the basic structure remains intact. We spent about 30 minutes there. Next, we head to the New Cathedral. This is a Baroque cathedral, construction of which began at the end of the 16th century. There are cloisters on both sides of the altar, some of which are accessible. We spent about 30 minutes there. Next, we headed to the University of Coimbra. The University of Coimbra is Portugal’s oldest and most traditional university. It still has over 20,000 students enrolled, but there are also spaces available for tourists, so we took our time to tour those. We purchased our tickets in advance on the official website. You can enter all the areas listed here, but the only one that’s scheduled in advance is the Joanina Library. You can choose your preferred date and time. You can visit the other areas before or after the library. There’s no specific route, so you can explore at your own pace. While researching tourist information in advance, I saw someone who had climbed the tower, and I’d love to do it if I could. The ticket doesn’t mention the tower, so I have no idea if it’s a separate fee or when you can go up. I’ll ask a staff member later. First, we visited the Chapel of São Miguel. At the University of Coimbra, we presented our tickets at the entrance to each area. The chapel’s ceiling and walls are ornately decorated, and it even has a precious pipe organ. Next, we visited the Royal Palace. This building was once used as a royal residence and apparently housed a weapons storage room and the king’s bedroom. Today, important university ceremonies, such as doctoral degree conferrals and opening ceremonies, are held here. The chemistry lab and other facilities are a little further away, about a 10-minute walk from the Royal Palace area. Among the exhibits on the history of Portugal and other countries, there was also one about Japan. I stopped at interesting spots around here, but didn’t spend too much time looking around overall. According to the staff member I spoke to earlier, it might be possible to climb the tower from 3:00 PM, so I headed back to the Royal Palace area. Apparently, there are days when it’s not possible to climb due to strong winds or other reasons. The stairs to the tower are very narrow, so staff at the top and bottom of the tower communicated with each other to make sure we didn’t miss each other. Coimbra left an impression of a calm city with a well-preserved historic streetscape. I headed to the entrance to make sure I was on time for my library appointment. The Joanina Library is a gorgeous Baroque-style library that’s said to have been the inspiration for a scene in the film “Beauty and the Beast.” Photography was prohibited, so I don’t have any photos of my own. Apparently, bats live in the library, helping to eradicate pests that eat the precious books. We went out for dinner. The restaurant I had researched in advance wasn’t open yet, so I checked reviews of restaurants close to our location on Google Maps and chose one. The waiter was very kind and helped me with various menu choices. Since it was the third day of our trip, my friend and I were both in the mood for some vegetarian food, so we went for a vegetarian-based menu. The food was mildly seasoned and delicious, but those who like stronger flavors might find it a bit lacking. On the way back to the hotel, I discovered a cute shop. I bought some azulejo-patterned accessories as souvenirs. I stopped by the supermarket to buy breakfast for the next day before heading back to the hotel. It’s the morning of the fourth day. The shuttle bus to Coimbra Station B runs early in the morning, which is very convenient. Today, I’m heading to Lisbon. The next video is in Lisbon.
