【東京散歩・上野】上野恩賜公園・アメ横、静寂と活気を歩く|Walking Tour of Tokyo, Japan
During rush hour on a weekday, I struggled to get above ground due to the complexity of the station. Today was a perfect day for a walk. Many foreign tourists were there early in the morning. Ueno Park is a huge park larger than Disneyland . Near the entrance, handprints of People’s Honor Award recipients are lined up. They’re in an inconspicuous location, so they’re easy to miss. There are so many foreign tourists, it’s rare to see a Japanese person there. I descended the stairs to Shinobazu Pond. Shinobazu Pond Benzendo is a temple built on a small island in Shinobazu Pond. It enshrines the gods of music, entertainment, and wealth. There’s an anecdote that, during the Edo period, there was no bridge, so worshippers had to use boats to visit. Shinobazu Pond: Countless lotus flowers bloom in the vast pond. Enjoy the fantastic scenery, blending in with the modern skyscrapers. There’s also a boat dock. Enjoy three types of boats: rowboats, cycle boats, and swan boats. Kan’ei-ji Temple, built in 1625 and associated with the Tokugawa family, is so well preserved and well-built that it’s hard to believe it’s 400 years old. Shinobu River, a quiet, relaxing spot near Kan’ei-ji Temple, is fed by natural spring water. Inarizaka, the approach to Hanazono Inari Shrine, is a mystical space lined with red torii gates. Many people find themselves snapping photos here, making it one of Ueno’s most popular photo spots. Many shrines are densely packed within the park. Hanazono Inari Shrine and Gojo Tenjin Shrine are shrines dedicated to the god of medicine, quiet power spots known for their healing and good health. Rest your tired feet after a two-hour walk. Ueno Toshogu Shrine, built in 1627 and dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, is a gorgeous shrine lavishly decorated with gold leaf. There is a fee to enter the main hall. I spent about three hours exploring the park, but it wasn’t enough time to explore the entire area. I’m left with regrets, so I’ll return another day. I crossed the “Panda Bridge” over JR Ueno Station and headed to the other side. The scenery changed dramatically, revealing a more urban cityscape. Huge commercial facilities, including Atre Ueno, Marui, and Yodobashi Camera, are clustered around the station . Ameya Yokocho (commonly known as Ameyoko) is a 500-meter shopping street stretching between JR Ueno Station and Okachimachi Station. With approximately 400 stores, it’s one of Tokyo’s top shopping and dining spots. With a mix of Asian, Middle Eastern, and Western ingredients and cultures, it feels like a foreign market. The colorful signs and bustling streets make it a popular photo spot. This energetic shopping street blends Tokyo’s downtown culture with an international flair. Many izakayas are open during the day on weekdays, making it a lively and bustling place. As the saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do,” so I enjoyed some of Ueno’s gourmet food and drinks during the day. A day off like this would be a nice way to spend a day off. It was a fascinating city packed with nature, history, and gourmet food, where you could make new discoveries just by walking around.
