湖南深山有人竟把房子修建在悬崖绝壁之上,8年耗费巨资,他为何偏要住在这里了?
If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I would never have believed that a brightly colored house, hidden atop a mountain in Yongshun, Hunan, at an altitude of 1,300 meters, resembles a secluded fairyland. Surrounded by towering cliffs and dense forests, it appears to stand as a commanding height within a few kilometers of the surrounding mountains. Incredibly, a learned and accomplished person lives here alone, far from the hustle and bustle of the city, leading a secluded and isolated life . What kind of reclusive master is he? Why would they live in such a remote place, where building houses is incredibly difficult? How were the materials transported up there? How did they maintain their daily lives ? Are there wild animals roaming the mountains? With these questions and curiosities in mind , we will climb to the summit to find out. Hello everyone, I’m Tingting. It’s truly incredible that a hidden ancient and mysterious temple exists atop this mountain. It’s full of legends, like a pearl fallen from the sky, quietly set atop the mountain. It has witnessed centuries of wind and rain, overlooking the vicissitudes and changes of the world , like a sacred place for purifying the soul. However, getting here is not easy. We drove along the winding mountain road… It took us two hours to finally approach this hidden paradise. Okay, enough talk, let’s start climbing! The altitude here is 1,300 meters. It will probably take us an hour to reach the summit. The path to the top is made up of winding stone steps, which are relatively easy to walk. There’s a well ahead; its water is piped from inside the mountain, providing a continuous supply for visitors to drink and quench their thirst – very convenient . Let’s continue upwards. When we came here, the local villagers told us that there’s a middle-aged man with a bachelor’s degree from a top-tier university living on the summit, guarding the temple. He usually doesn’t come down the mountain; supplies should be readily available. It seems this place is quite attractive, as it’s only visited once a month. It even persuaded a 211 university graduate to abandon their studies and work to come to this temple . Walking here is quite tiring ; it’s another sweat-drenched challenge! This section of the path is relatively gentle . The forest coverage here exceeds 80%, with pine, cypress , maple, and all sorts of trees . Some of these trees are green year-round, so you don’t feel the heat at all in summer . There must be thousands of steps here; we ‘ve only reached the halfway point , about a third of the way. Carrying such a heavy load is quite tiring. I feel like even empty-handed, it’s incredibly difficult, mainly because of these stone steps… It’s incredibly steep! Look at this tree over there, it looks like an S-shape, with a crooked neck like a duck’s neck. Oh, you’re making my mouth water ! My goodness , this isn’t a staircase , it ‘s a ladder to heaven ! It’s so similar to the Daliang Mountains we climbed before, and incredibly steep. So tiring ! Hang in there ! We just came from that other mountain. From this angle, you can see all the mountains. The path we came from was incredibly narrow, only wide enough for one car at a time. If a car came from the opposite direction, we’d be in trouble, it would take at least 15 minutes. It was so narrow! Look here, it’s endless, just mountains and a few scattered houses. Okay, let ‘s keep going. Finally, we’ve made it to the top! We can already see the temple here. We’ve reached the top of the mountain. The path ahead is very smooth , no longer stone steps. If it were still stone steps, my legs would probably be ruined. I’m even trembling a bit as I walk. There’s a loud rumbling sound over there ; someone is using a drone for aerial work , hoisting things. After all, this mountain is quite high, so drones are quite convenient for transporting supplies and hoisting building materials . Oh, what a wonderful idea! I didn’t expect there to be another section of stone steps ahead. The higher we go, the louder the rumbling becomes, proving we’re not far from the temple. We’re getting closer and closer ! Wait , why are the stone steps stopping here? Behind us is the most primitive, winding path. There are some stones piled up here on the path , and some sand over there. Walking through this forest is incredibly pleasant. There’s also a very steep slope here. These stone steps were all hoisted up using drones, which makes things much easier. The temple is just ahead! Look, it’s not paved yet . Slow down! Oh dear, it’s so slippery! People who come to this temple often say, “It ‘s like being three feet from the sky ,” haha, it’s absolutely true! I wonder where the master is? Let’s go find him and chat, and ask if he’d like to talk to us, or if we can take pictures. Hey, look, the sun has already set over there . Let ‘s go find the master now. If he won’t let us take pictures, then we won’t. We were incredibly lucky to meet the temple keeper when we came up here. Let’s chat with him. Hello, hello ! How old are you? I was born in 1976, so I ‘m 50 years old this year. 50 years old ? That’s still quite young, haha . How many years have you been guarding this temple? Someone asked that earlier , haha. This temple is quite old. This ancient temple is probably over a thousand years old. Over a thousand years old! It’s just that repairing the temple here was very difficult. All these inscriptions are gone. Oh, the old inscriptions are gone, right? Yeah , there are no inscriptions. There used to be a tree here that can prove it. The local elders all know about it . It was destroyed and cut down during the Cultural Revolution. Oh, this… There’s a tree here. This ancient cypress tree is so big that it takes four people to encircle it. Oh, it must be an ancient tree , a very old tree. And it ‘s as tall as this house! Imagine how big it must be growing from here ! This tree was cut down during the Cultural Revolution . This tree, which takes four people to encircle, must have been planted by monks. And at that time, the soil was very thin and it grew very slowly. So, a tree that takes four people to encircle must have taken 1,000 years to grow. This proves that there was already human activity on this mountain . But there were no fields or soil here, right? So, it means that practitioners came here, which shows that… This so-called temple was originally just a thatched hut, conservatively estimated to be around 1,000 years old, over a thousand years ago. Master, when you came here, these buildings probably weren’t here, right? No, no. People from before told me about the temple’s history. The walls collapsed, and after they collapsed , I came up to take a look and said, ” I came here, and I wanted to repair it.” So, it ended up like this, and I wanted to rebuild it, right ? So, it was repaired, and that’s how it became what it is today . It definitely took a lot of effort and energy back then. This building cost one or two million. One or two million, um, two million , but a lot of the money was spent on the horse team. Back then, all these materials were carried up by horse teams . The walls of this main hall are all stone . These walls are all stone. This building used to have stone walls. When I designed it, I moved it inward by one meter and back one meter, so there’s a corridor around the main hall. A corridor, oh, you can enjoy the scenery. These walls are all stone walls. The walls are also made of stone. Yes, stone. It’s not easy to have so many stones on the mountaintop. Of course. This temple of yours used to be wooden, right? The walls used to be stone. Of course, the roof was also… There should be lightning rods installed at such a high place, right ? Look, on that transmission tower, that’s a lightning rod. Master , how many years have you been here? I’ve been here for eight years , this is my eighth year. Eight years … You’re usually here alone, right? Do any wild animals in these mountains bother you? Wild animals … large ones are rare, I haven’t seen any. Wild boars… sometimes they come, but they’ve never come here. I heard their calls from up ahead , haha. But here there are mostly squirrels , lots of squirrels, especially lots of rats . So, how did you feel when you first came here? We became monks, for the Buddha’s cause, to do something for… It’s for the people’s cause, after all, this is a solemn and beautiful land, full of compassion. So, since this temple was damaged, and we have this opportunity, let’s rebuild it. People always have to contribute to society, and everyone who comes into this world will leave, right? It ‘s like life is just a passing journey, so cherish life, cherish your life . Since we have the opportunity , rebuilding this is a very good thing, isn’t it? So, it ‘s been eight years, and it’s almost finished this year. Oh, there’s nowhere else to build, so you came to this place and built this temple. It took eight years to build this temple, eight years! Oh, the top and the bottom are different. The bottom is all modern, and the construction on the top is very … It’s tough! Look, it took us one or two hours to walk up here. This is called “building a tower from sand ,” oh, building a tower from sand! It’s done bit by bit. These bricks were carried up by horses , and then, continuously , these steel bars— all of these were carried up by hand . In the past, these materials were hard to come by, and construction was very difficult. So, let’s build slowly. When we came up just now, we saw drones being used to lift things up. You guys are very lucky to be here today. There isn’t much cement or sand on this ground; it used to be a construction site , haha. You see, it took so much mental strength to build this over eight years. Yes , when you first came here, there was no electricity. How did you solve that? And water ? There’s a well here … Now… Oh, the water pump brought the water up, and then we bought a lot of water pipes and water tanks. There are water tanks to store it; each tank can store more than 2 cubic meters of water. So how do you usually manage your food? I grow some myself, and people from below buy it. Sometimes , some people bring me things like rice and salt, which I might have to buy down the mountain. Of course, it’s rice, oil, and these heavier things that I need to buy. You mean, Master, you haven’t been down the mountain for 8 years, right? No, that’s not it . Sometimes I go down. We monks can’t be isolated from society , haha. When I have time, I still have to go down. So, when you go down the mountain and back … How long will it take? Well, there’s no way around it. Going down and coming back, if we want to go into the city this year, we ‘ll have to charter a car. Oh, we don’t have a car, haha. Oh, are your grandparents still alive? My father is still alive too. We still need to go back and visit them regularly. Yes, we need to go home and visit them, right? Yes, yes, did your family object to this? This spiritual practice is a choice in life . Yes, if you say they don’t object, that’s unrealistic, isn’t it? But, for the sake of this choice in life, this ultimate pursuit in life, then this involves the philosophy of life. Although they are parents, in the face of the impermanence of life and death, the cycle of reincarnation, everyone is… It’s a small matter . So , in order to pursue the Bodhi path of escaping the cycle of rebirth and the sea of suffering , one decides to become a monk. Becoming a monk is the true meaning of life. People say that some people come into this world to accomplish something meaningful. Hahaha, if you understand these kinds of thoughts about life, then you are thinking correctly . Hahaha, I understand a little. Hahaha, we’ve been chatting for so long and I still don’t know your surname, Master. Oh, I am a disciple of Buddha Shakyamuni. All disciples of Buddha have the surname Shi. Oh, Shi? Dharma name: Heart Lamp, Shi Heart Lamp , Shi Heart Lamp, the lamp of the light. Oh, Shi Heart Lamp, the heart of the heart, the heart of the heart. This name sounds quite nice. Let’s take a walk around. Thank you , Master. It’s alright, it’s alright. Let’s take a look at the main hall. The sunlight coming down from the mountain is so beautiful, it’s magnificent. They say we can see Zhangjiajie from here, right ? That direction is Zhangjiajie . Oh, that direction is Zhangjiajie. That direction is Zhangjiajie. We can vaguely see Tianmen Mountain. Oh, Tianmen Mountain, but we can’t see the cave. Oh, we can’t see the Tianmen Cave, but the cliffs are very clear . Oh, the cliffs are very clear. From that direction, we can see Bamian Mountain in the farthest distance. Oh, Bamian Mountain, that’s considered the largest mountain in Asia. It’s like a table, a table, a table! Haha, Bamian Mountain, Bamian Mountain. The smog is too thick today, we can’t see it. Haha. Bamian Mountain says, Master, I heard you graduated from a 211 university, right? Shaanxi Normal University. Oh, really! Haha, you ‘re truly an amazing person. I think you’re very knowledgeable . Haha. Okay, then we won’t bother you anymore, Master. Let’s… Let’s wander around a bit. First , let’s look inside the main hall. Here, we have Shakyamuni Buddha enshrined. These two are seated on lotus thrones. The one next to them, holding a pagoda , is the Medicine King Bodhisattva. Next, let’s see this one. This is Manjushri Bodhisattva. And this one , holding a vase, is the Compassionate Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva. And over there, this Bodhisattva is holding a lotus flower ; he is Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. And this one is Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva . Over here, we have two more, both wealthy , holding gold ingots; they are the Gods of Wealth. Next to them is Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, and the one above is the Guardian Deity . We’ve seen enough of the main hall. Now let’s look outside at the scenery. Looking around , it seems the mountain we’re standing on is the highest, but the scenery is still quite beautiful, even though it’s shrouded in mist. It’s breathtakingly beautiful, reminding me of the poem: “I dare not speak loudly, lest I startle the heavenly beings. ” Hey, this rock must be naturally formed, right? Did you notice it? These two rocks, resembling the mushroom-shaped rocks of Mount Fanjing, are over here. There are some chairs for tourists to rest. Over here are some stone tablets ; these are probably merit tablets with names on them. These tablets are quite old, and the inscriptions are illegible. The top section details the deeds of this monk when he built the temple, as well as donations of money and supplies. Below are some older items , but they are too blurry to see clearly; you can only make out the general outline. The vegetables the monk used to grow are over here. You see, he lives alone up here, so he seems to be doing well . He mentioned earlier that villagers from the foot of the mountain sometimes bring him supplies. He also goes down the mountain periodically, since he has parents at home. He needs to visit them sometimes ; it’s been eight years. Everyone feels homesick, right? And with his parents still alive … Look over there, that mountain is so flat! Building this temple was truly difficult; it took eight years to construct. Before it was completed, there were no drones; the materials were carried up by horses and carried by people. Now it’s much better. The materials for repairing the stone steps were all done using drones. The craftsman just told us that if we wanted to come here, he had several meditation rooms, which were rest rooms. He was very hospitable and said we could stay here for one night , but we were in a hurry to go to other places, so we didn’t want to bother him. The buildings here are painted with a layer of pink—no, not pink, it’s yellow and red. The two colors blend together very well and are very beautiful. They look very vibrant from a distance . Okay, that’s all for our tour. We’ve learned about its story and origin. I guess the craftsman couldn’t explain it clearly either. When he came up here, there were only some ruins left , and he rebuilt it. This temple is conservatively estimated to be over 1,000 years old . Okay, that’s all for today. See you next time, bye-bye!
