Another Side of Kyoto | Hidden Countryside Trip to Ohara, Miyama & Yokai Village | JAPAN TRAVEL VLOG

Good morning everyone, this is Mona😊 I’m in Kyoto today. I was born in Kyoto and raised in Osaka. When I come back to Kansai region (western Japan), I somehow feel at ease. This time, I’m planning to travel mainly around the countryside of Kyoto! Since I’m in Kyoto, I definitely can’t miss out on matcha sweets💚 Alright, let’s head out! It’s about an hour by bus from Kyoto Station. I have arrived in Ohara. It’s so quiet. The sound of rustling leaves and the chirping of insects is soothing. The leaves are starting to change color🍁 First, I’ll head to a temple famous for its beautiful moss garden! There are many shops lined up in front of the temple. It seems I take off my shoes here. Let’s head to the guest hall. Wow, what beauty. I can’t help but be mesmerized. Next, I head to the moss garden. Sanzen-in is a prestigious temple with over 1,200 years of history. A peaceful place where historic architecture and beautiful nature coexist. It has a mystical atmosphere. The stone statues of Jizo with their expressive faces. It almost feels like walking through another world. Let’s explore further up the stone steps. Now, let’s walk along the approach to Sanzen-in. The cold whole pickled cucumber is light taste and delicious♡ There are many restaurants and souvenir shops lined up, so just walking around is fun. On the way, I discovered a restaurant with a lovely atmosphere! Let’s go in. This is a restaurant renovated from an old Japanese house. Apparently, I’ll be enjoying lunch made with fresh local vegetables. I’m happy that there are so many kinds of dishes. Today’s vegetables are winter melon, Chinese cabbage, and onion. This Yuzu (Japanese citrus fruit) dressing is absolutely delicious😋 Although it’s a bit sad to leave, I’ll head back to central Kyoto for now. I’ve come to an event I’ve been interested in. This fall, countless Yokai (Japanese folk monster) are said to be living in this village. As Japan’s old townscapes disappeared, the Yokai who once lived there lost their places to belong. So, they’ve moved to this village, where the atmosphere of the past still lingers. Wow, the Yokai are gathering! As dusk approaches, they become more active. I’ve arrived at today’s hotel. Oh, there’s an alcoholic beverages tasting event going on! I’ll have a matcha beer🥰 This is today’s room. I often stay at hotels from this brand because they’re clean and comfortable. I’ll have dinner at the roadside station adjacent to the hotel. Wow, Tempura set meal packed with volume! Kyotamba is famous for its black beans. Maybe I’ll buy some alcohol to take the hotel♡ Good night😉 Good morning! I’ve arrived at today’s destination. The murmur of the river is so soothing. This is a beautiful village where Japan’s traditional scenery still remains. It has a nostalgic, old-fashioned atmosphere. At the unmanned store, I found some green Yuzu (Japanese citrus fruit)! Thatched-roof houses, where people still live today, are scattered throughout the area. It truly is a “living cultural heritage.” It’s starting to feel like autumn. Suddenly, a torii gate appeared! Let’s climb it. Wow, what a nice view✨ I’ll have brunch here. It looks delicious😍 The eggs are fluffy. Delicious♡ It even comes with pickles! This is a small museum that feels like a hideaway. Let’s go inside. The first floor seems to be an indigo dyeing workshop. Wow, beautiful💙 Let’s go up to the second floor. Many beautiful works are on display. Now, let’s take a little break. This cafe is attached to a direct-sale egg shop. It is gentle and light taste♡ I found a shrine standing on a hilltop. Solemn atmosphere. I can feel a sacred energy here. The quietness feels so comforting. Let’s worship. Maybe I’ll do my best again starting tomorrow. This channel brings you unique travel experiences in Japan. This time, I will be traveling around another lesser known side of Kyoto.

I enjoyed exploring Ohara and Miyama Kayabuki no Sato, quiet and beautiful countryside towns in autumn, as well as TOEI Kyoto Studio Park, where Yokai (Japanese folk monster) are said to dwell🍁

  1. Hi Mona!❤ I visited Kyoto about a year ago and only had a few days there. This video is proof that I was indeed, not there long enough to experience everything Kyoto has to offer. Thank you for sharing. Have a wonderful weekend!! ❤

  2. "The quietness is comforting" when it's so incredibly loud. 😉 But of course there are different kinds of quietness. 🙂

  3. Hello Mona!
Very nice shots from what appears to be a rather quiet part of Kyoto. Have you ever visited the Philosopher's Path in Kyoto? There are also beautiful temples and quiet places there. I recently uploaded a video about it from my trip through Japan. Another one from Kyoto will be coming soon.
I'm excited to see where you take us next time.
    Best regards from Germany

  4. Beautifully shot — love how you captured Kyoto’s quiet countryside vibes. 🌿 The misty forests and calm village scenes feel so real and peaceful. Makes me want to visit Japan again!

  5. Hi Mona! I see a lot of Miyazaki in this episode. 2:38 is the village from "My Neighbor Totoro." 12:00 is the arrival of the guests in "Spirited Away." I really love it all!

  6. I am looking forward to enjoy your newest video Mona. However: if I was not a big fan of you and your channel, I would probably not watch the video. Because although Kyoto is a very beautiful city, with so many amazing places, for me, its now way too touristy. I have been there twice, for about 10 days in total. There are many moments that will be forever in my mind. Like watching a shinto wedding in a very busy shrine. At Fushimi Inari, discovering tiny shrines within a beautiful bamboo forest. Discovering beautiful buddhist temples and japanese gardens, which are not on the "main tourist map" etc.

I am very much digstusted by the way that some foreign tourists have behaved in Kyoto. I really hope, that you and other japanase people know, that there are also a lot of people travelling to Japan, who are not like that.

  8. I'm in love with your videos from Argentina! you help me to plan my first trip to Japan in the future and I watch them every night in my tv 😍❤️🙏🏻

Your fingernails are matcha color. I love Kyoto & I really like Yokai.

  10. So incredibly beautiful! And seeing it through your eyes is especially wonderful. Thank you for sharing! ❤

  12. Hi Mona, I just discovered your channel, and I love it; it's super relaxing to watch! I also love Japan so much, my favorite country! Really quick questions: are you using a DJI Osmo Pocket? Film with 24 fps? What software do you use to edit? Thank you so much for any tips on your recording-editing process, as I want to do something like this 🙂

  14. Thank you for letting tagalong with you on this beautiful journey in the country side. I only have one issue and that is I could not taste the food you choose.

  15. Last year, my family and I traveled to Japan through a travel agency. Since it was our first time there, we only spent one day in Osaka, one day in Kyoto, and two days in Tokyo because of the agency's itinerary.

Honestly, we didn't really get to enjoy the sights and beauty of Japan because of the limited time in each city. Next time, when my youngest child is older, my family and I will return and perhaps focus on Osaka and Kyoto, as I love both cities. Greetings from Indonesia

  16. Great video,i love Kyoto vibes..It truly represents an old Japan where you can savour the culture, tradition and nature 🔝💯

  17. What a breathtaking video! Kyoto looks absolutely magical through your lens — the mix of ancient temples, peaceful gardens, and charming streets really captures the heart of Japan. Your storytelling and cinematography make me feel like I’m walking right there with you, soaking in the beauty and serenity of every moment. Thank you for sharing such a peaceful and inspiring journey! I’m excited for your next trip soon ☺️✨
