【Tour de Cafe Tokyo #6】Bromptonと走る たまリバー50!上流編|輪行ありのハプニングライド🏞️🚲☔️

Hi everyone! This is Pedal & Brew. Today, we’re riding the upper stream of the Tama River 50 course! We’ll start around Todoroki and head upstream, but we’ll take a cafe break along the way. Today, we’re visiting these two shops. ♡ The Tama River 50 is about a 53-kilometer course along the Tama River riverbed, stretching from Ota Ward to Hamura City. It was created to promote health among Tokyo residents! It seems safe to ride since the road is properly paved. I’ll ride straight down Komahachi Dori and head toward Tamazutsumi Dori. My maximum distance cycled in a single day so far is 35 kilometers. Considering the round trip back home, I might have to ride twice that distance… I’m a little nervous, but since it’s mostly flat, I want to go as far as I can! The light just turned green, so I can cross over. I’ll be riding on the road for a while. It’s mid-October, and the high is 24 degrees Celsius today. It’s cool, a nice autumn temperature, but it feels a bit muggy due to the humidity. Maybe I should have worn short sleeves. It’s about 13 kilometers to the first cafe from here! Riding on the gravel is a little difficult. After going down the slope, it opens up to a path that looks perfect for dog walking. It’s lovely with all the greenery, but it’s cool, so there are also a lot of bugs! Lol. I should be able to ride at a leisurely pace for a while. Whoa! That surprised me… My wheels must have gotten caught in the sand. Going right under Futako-Tamagawa Station. I can see the river now! I think I’ll take a break. Wow, the view is beautiful! I can see the train tracks, too. Time to sit down and relax. Even a great egret is resting on the rocks. Lol. Maybe it got tired of flying. After about a 10-minute break, I’m off again. Is that an expressway above me? We’re at the Futako-Tamagawa Green Space, where kids are playing baseball and soccer. The adults are going to climb this hill! Lol. I thought it would be all flat, but there are inclines every now and then. But I guess those don’t really count as hills, right? Lol. We’ll be on the car road briefly, too. If I cross the Tamagawara Bridge that I see in the distance, I’ll arrive at the first cafe. Just a little bit more! I’m ready for breakfast. Picking up speed on the downhill… And powering up the incline! I’m exhausted! That plant is called Solidago altissima (tall goldenrod). The goal of the upper Tama River 50 course is the Hamura Water Intake Weir in Hamura City. I’m around the Tama Suido Bridge, so that means the goal is about three times the distance I’ve ridden so far?! Lol. Someone planning to walk all the way to Hamura stopped to chat with us! That’s incredible stamina! I hope to run into them again somewhere. Is it just me, or are the clouds looking a little ominous? Rain was forecast for the evening, but it should be fine during the day… I’m moving onto the main road for a moment, then taking the stairs down to the riverbank. Gotta be careful not to lose my balance. I really don’t like this bumpy road! Lol. If I upgrade my suspension to absorb the shock, maybe the ride will be smoother. I’m definitely interested in customizations that improve the ride. My Brompton is going to be my lifelong partner, after all. Lol. And with that, we’ve arrived at Tamagawara Bridge. The cafe is just straight ahead. I ordered the Miracle Double Cheese Toast, which someone recommended as delicious! This is definitely going to make me gain weight! Lol. They even have a dedicated indoor space for bikes, making it a perfect spot for cyclists. The latte has a bitterness like dark chocolate, but absolutely no unpleasant aftertaste. The cocoa-like sweetness blends beautifully with the milk. The freshly baked Miracle Double Cheese Toast smells amazing, filled with cheese, just as the name implies. The rich cream cheese and the savory, toasty cheese on top are an incredible combination… It was a devilishly addictive taste! Lol. It suddenly started raining… I was allowed to keep my bike inside. The forecast said it was just a passing shower, so I’ll wait it out here. The rain stopped quickly, but my Brooks leather saddle took some damage… Leather requires this kind of extra care, but that’s one of the reasons I love it. It’s all part of aging the leather. Lol. I’m crossing the Tamagawara Bridge again and heading back to the riverbank. There are puddles from the rain earlier. It’s about 1 kilometer from the bridge. The next cafe is 17 kilometers away, so this means I have to repeat this about 15 or 16 more times! I must have used up too much energy climbing those hills, because I can’t pedal as well as I’d like… My Brompton is the standard C Line, which has a 6-speed gear system (2 external × 3 internal). I might be better suited to a bike with more gears to choose from in the moment. I keep falling behind the Moulton… Even so, the Tama River area has so many sports fields. I had no idea, since I wasn’t very involved in sports back in school. My legs are reaching their limit, so I think I’ll have to give up here. I’ll head to Seiseki-Sakuragaoka Station nearby. Ugh, I’m frustrated. I should have walked the bike up those hills instead of forcing it… Crossing the Sekido Bridge. Maybe I should go to the gym and do some leg training. I’ve arrived at Seiseki-Sakuragaoka Station. The strength of the Brompton is that it folds up and can be carried on a train. I’m using the “Karugarl” (It means easy to carry) carry bag. The only drawback is that you can’t sling it over your shoulder. So frustrating! I’m definitely going to try this again. I went home appreciating the ease of Rinkō (carrying a folded bike) with my Brompton. Lol. Alright! From here on, the video will feature the Alex Moulton solo. By the way, the Moulton rider on this channel is a former competitive cyclist. It’s just my imagination that the speed is much faster than when we were riding together… right? Lol. I left the riverbank to go to the station, so first I need to get back to the river. The leaves are starting to turn red and yellow. The sky is turning grayer and grayer. And sure enough, a few raindrops are starting to fall. I was wondering why I couldn’t get back to the river, but it turns out I was riding along the Asa River, a tributary of the Tama River. I’ll correct the route to cross the Asa River and get back to the Tama River. Am I riding along the Tama Monorail here? Passing Manganji Station. I hope the weather holds out until we reach the cafe… We’re riding the upper stream this time, but next time I want to try the lower stream (from Todoroki to Daishibashi Green Space). Finally, I’m back along the Tama River! The cafe is only 2 or 3 kilometers away, so just a little more effort. Fewer and fewer people are walking or cycling now. With this weather, I guess… I thought it would be sunny during the day. Finally, I’ve arrived at our final destination, a cafe in Akishima City. I take off our shoes to enter the shop. I’m having today’s lunch: clam chowder. The coffee is made using a siphon! I ordered beans from the San Jose Farm in Brazil. I thought it was just the clam chowder, but it came as a set with a salad and bread. Besides clams and shrimp, it has potatoes, onions, carrots, shimeji mushrooms, baby corn, broccoli, and more. It’s so hearty and warms me right up. The siphon method is an immersion style, where the coffee grounds are steeped in water for a set time, resulting in a clean, crisp flavor. Am I pouring this right? Lol. Dark roast beans are perfect for a siphon brew. I expected that dark-roast bitterness, typical of Brazil, but it was surprisingly clean and totally smooth, almost like a Washed Ethiopian coffee! A dog suddenly came out to greet us! So cute! A cat also appeared, and now it’s snack time for everyone. The staff asked each person if it was okay to let the dog and cat roam, so people who aren’t fond of animals can also relax here. They’re both nearly the same color! Lol. I’m full, and playing with the dog and cat made for a truly satisfying café experience. The rain has started to pour on the way back, so it’s all about willpower now… I’m planning the next one for two weeks from now, but it might be a little later depending on the weather. I would love it if you subscribed and waited for the next video!

  1. Very nice! I like the music and the theme: coffee + riding bicycle.
10:28 Keep riding bicycle and your legs will naturally get stronger. No need for a gym.
11:35 Wow, Alex is indeed faster!
14:14 Interesting, that you have to take off your shoes to enter the cafe – it's so unique, but also unusual for me (living in Europe).

  2. 너무 사랑스러워요 😍 영상 인트로를 보면서 바로 구독했어요. 행복한 영상 감사합니다 from 독일

  3. I visited Cross Coffee a couple of years ago on a similar bike ride along the Tama River. I had the (excellent) coffee but didn't get to try the cheese toast. Maybe next time 🙂 Thank you for sharing your ride experience. I also appreciate your list of cafes around Japan!

  4. How cool that you also ride on Brompton's! Greetings from two Brompton Riders based in Berlin 🙂 We're visiting Tokyo in December, but sadly without our bikes.
