彰化二林鎮探訪|葡萄酒故鄉・台灣酒窖・二林市場・儒林路老街・仁和宮・洪瑞珍老店・古都木瓜牛奶・肉圓壽・賞花與自行車道【IROIRO】

I’m the type of person whose face turns super red after just a little bit of alcohol. And today, my first meal of the day was drinking a bunch of wine. I’ve never done this before. Is it because the wine is too strong, or is Erlin just too welcoming? Let’s find out! The champion’s stuff always has to come last. Right, truly, there’s a reason for it. Good morning, everyone! I’m IROIRO. Today we’re not in Yunlin, nor are we in Zhongli. Instead, we’ve come to Erlin Township in Changhua, known as the hometown of Taiwanese wine. We’re preparing to take you all to unlock more townships and scenic spots. So, we’re definitely not in France right now. This is the Taiwan Wine Cellar, established by the Erlin Farmers’ Association. Inside, they sell various red and white wines brewed by local wineries here. We’re going to start emulating what the Danish heartthrob said about always keeping 0.05% alcohol in your blood, that comfortable feeling. But later, only I can drink, okay? You have to drive. Alright. Then the wine tasting is up to you. As for me, I’ll be responsible for taking everyone deep into Erlin to explore. What secrets does Erlin Township hold? GO! Do you feel like the pedestrian signals in Erlin seem particularly large? They do seem bigger, huh? Yeah, such a big little green man. Erlin Township is located in the southwest of Changhua County, situated between the lower reaches of the Old Zhuoshui River and the Yuliao River. It borders Pitou to the east and Fangyuan to the west, Dacheng to the south, and across the Old Zhuoshui River to the north, it faces Xihu and Puyan. It covers an area of about 92 square kilometers, making it the largest administrative area in Changhua County. Erlin Township was originally the location of the Erlin settlement of the Babuza plains indigenous tribe, and the town’s name comes from this. During the Japanese colonial period and after WWII, it was once part of Taichung County. It wasn’t until the 1950 administrative reorganization that it was reassigned to Changhua County, where it remains. Erlin, with its flat terrain and fertile soil, is a typical agricultural township. It abounds in rice, red barley, buckwheat, grapes, dragon fruit… Among these, red barley, buckwheat, and grapes are the most representative, collectively known as the “Three Treasures of Erlin”. Additionally, grapes are mostly used for winemaking, which has also made Erlin the area in Taiwan with the highest density of wineries. Besides agricultural products, Erlin Township, with the changing seasons, also displays different floral landscapes. From March to April, there are kapok flowers along the Dongluo River. From May to June, at the border of Erlin and Xihu, you can see golden shower trees in full bloom. From September to November, the beautiful pink blossoms of the silk floss trees line both sides of Rulin Road, and in December, the snow-white buckwheat flower fields. These beautiful flower seas, along with wine, form Erlin Township’s unique tourist appeal. What woke us up this morning wasn’t the aroma of coffee, but the fragrance of wine. Besides producing the familiar Kyoho and Honey Red grapes, Erlin also cultivates wine grapes rare in Taiwan, primarily the Golden Muscat, Black Queen, and Jhen Shiang varieties. Both quality and yield rank highest in Taiwan. Erlin’s wine grape history began in 1965 when Mr. Chiu Shen-chiang from Changhua and several farmers successfully trial-planted Golden Muscat grapes on vacant land, opening a new chapter for wine grapes. Although development in winemaking was initially limited due to the tobacco and alcohol monopoly system, after the monopoly ended in 2002, the Farmers’ Association actively helped fruit farmers transition, promoting the establishment of production and marketing groups and rural wineries, and providing winemaking technology and marketing guidance. As the Ministry of Finance promoted new regulations opening up private winemaking, several wineries in Erlin obtained legal licenses. At its peak, it gathered over 20 wineries, making Erlin the area with the highest density of wineries in Taiwan. In 2008, the Erlin Farmers’ Association established the Taiwan Wine Cellar joint service center as a display and sales platform for local wineries. It has exhibition space and a tasting area allowing the public to sample various wines from local wineries. It also promotes and sells buckwheat, red barley, and other local major agricultural products. Maybe I drank a bit too much and forgot, but there is a difference. You should, let me compare again. There is, there is, like this, the taste is quite different. Maybe it’s because just now… Yeah, maybe the last one was a while ago, I kinda forgot. It’s very fragrant, very fragrant. Because it… you can smell it. It’s really good! But it’s priced higher. It has a plum-like aroma. It has brandy added to it. Right, so it’s just really good. It tastes quite different from regular red wine. Because it has that brandy added. This champion wine truly lives up to its champion name. And there are only two bottles left! So, doesn’t that mean we have to take them home? No hesitation, just grab them! Just grab them and go! I want to try some buckwheat crackers. Buckwheat is also a local specialty here. Then we gotta buy them! And it has golden salted egg yolk in it! Seems delicious. Is my face really red? Wow, your face is pretty red! Oh my gosh, I’m the type of person whose face turns super red after just a little bit of alcohol. And today, my first meal of the day was drinking a bunch of wine. I’ve never done this before. Is it because the wine is too strong, or is Erlin just too welcoming? Let’s find out! Will I fall asleep this afternoon? Located on Sec. 2 of Rulin Road, the Erlin First Public Market was originally gathered in front of the Renhe Temple. But after a fire destroyed it in 1927, it gradually moved and was rebuilt at its current location north of Renhe Temple. The new market was designed by the Japanese and has a unique layout. It was planned in an octagonal shape, with a central courtyard radiating out in eight directions with eight passageways. It also has two circular walkways. The stalls are neatly distributed, and there’s even a well in the central courtyard that once supplied water for the market. It fell out of use after tap water became widespread. Today, besides selling fresh produce and local snacks, the most notable feature of Erlin Market is the concentration of many tailoring and clothing alteration shops. These originated from the 1970s to 1980s. Back then, Erlin Market not only had entire rows of fabric stores, but also attracted residents from neighboring towns to come have clothes custom-made, creating a flourishing culture of tailoring and fabric trade. However, with the rise of the ready-made clothing industry and the gradual decline of fabric stores, many businesses transitioned to clothing alteration. Nowadays, the tailoring stalls in the market are mostly run by master tailors with decades of experience. A few shops still offer fabric sales and custom clothing services. This has allowed Erlin Market to retain the rare sight of a sewing community. Additionally, some of the stall signs inside the market are rare hand-painted signs. It’s said many were done by renowned local Erlin painter brothers, Uncle A-Rang and Uncle A-Yu. They hold significant local artistic value. If you come to Erlin Market, don’t forget to look up and notice these characteristic signs with old-fashioned fonts and hand-painted styles. Let’s eat some fried ba-wan in the market! That’s right! This stall is said to have been around for over eighty years: Triangle Window Fried Ba-wan. An old establishment must be good, right? And it’s also called Triangle Window. No problem, let’s try it. This is the oyster version. Full of chives. And then… My oyster fell out! Here’s its oyster. First, try it plain. The chives are so fragrant! Really? Mmm, very fragrant! Why do I hear a crunchy sound? Crunch… Fried ba-wan. Fresh ingredients, handmade preparation, crispy outside, tender inside. Its fried skin is so crispy. Very crispy, and it doesn’t have that greasy/oil smell. It doesn’t. Completely no greasy/oil smell. The meat fry is here! We added an order. So it’s also with chives? But just with meat inside instead. The inside is like… minced pork. Just fried, still steaming. The meat fry has a completely different flavor. I think the meat fry has a stronger taste. So I feel the meat fry can be eaten on its own. The added order of squid is here! Look! Wow, such a big plate of squid! And it looks so delicious! Yeah! Here, this must be fresh. It tastes… Delicious… So good! The squid is so Q (chewy)! The fried coating is equally excellent. Coming to this Triangle Window Fried Ba-wan shop, the full land and sea platter – just order everything, that’s right! Really. From the Japanese colonial period to the present, with the area around Renhe Temple as the core, stretching from Zhongzheng Road and Erlin Market south to Rulin Road, forms a grid-like cross street block. This is the oldest developed and busiest old street area in Erlin Township. Rulin Road not only gathers many traditional vendors and local snacks, but several places also retain precious shophouse风貌 (fengmao – features/appearance) and wide temple squares. Coming to this area, you can thoroughly experience the living atmosphere of Erlin’s old street. Near Wanhua Vegetarian Ingredients, between the building windows, you can see Chinese elements like gourds, scrolls, and flutes. It’s full of strong traditional cultural气息 (qixi – atmosphere). This building with the Iced Black Tea stall, and the unnamed Duck Meat Vermicelli shop, as well as next to Liaozai Seafood, are all old red-brick houses that can attest to the area’s early complete风貌 (fengmao – features). Next to Dadi Chinese Medicine Store, this long-established gold paper shop shows its original red brick wall on the side. Jizhen Trading Company is the only remaining Japanese-era corner shop in Erlin Township. The combination of pointed arches and round arches is quite distinctive. On the left and right sides of Uncle Xiaomi’s shop, one is an old商号 (shanghao – firm/store), using washed terrazzo to display its name. The other building has windows formed in a triangular arch style. On the rooftop parapet wall, they used a surname as the decorative theme. It’s worth mentioning that, like many townships having large surname communities, the “Hong” from Hong Jinbao is a traditional major surname in Erlin. There’s even a local saying, “Half of Erlin is Hong.” However, in recent years, it’s said that the “Chen” from Chen Huimin has gradually surpassed it in population, coming from behind. Chenli Store’s predecessor was the Chenli Trading Company during the Japanese era, operated by the local prominent Hong family’s Hong Ershang. He not only owned large amounts of farmland but also invested in rice shops, the sugar industry, fabric stores, transportation, and the Erlin Theater. Back then, he almost monopolized the shop operations on the entire street in front of the Mazu Temple. Chenli Store is one of his representative properties. The second-floor balcony is very distinctive. You can see seven round columns with Ionic capitals alternating with six arches. The railing below is designed in a water vase shape. The overall facade design perfectly presents the opulence and refinement of a wealthy family. Xin’an Chinese Medicine Pharmacy was formerly named Qing’an Hall. It was renamed Xin’an Chinese Medicine Pharmacy by the third generation and is now operated by the fourth generation. It’s a century-old establishment. Thank you. Ours are all handmade, we brew it ourselves. Look, the kid makes it himself. Brewing it yourself is impressive! Yeah, because there’s no production line. Many customers are regulars, buying a thousand dollars worth, ten bottles at a time. They come often to buy. You come often? I meant probably many people come often to buy. Habit, those who are used to drinking it. Some also recommend food places. Yeah, they recommend more like… Both scenic spots and food places. Yeah… You guys just go along the road… Yeah, just go along the road, driving, filming, and exploring. Yeah, thank you… Just introducing Erlin. Today is just introducing spots in Erlin. Yeah… What things are like here. Yeah… Sure… Thank you… You’re welcome… Such a huge Seiko watch! Buy one for me! Wow, such a big watch. Hanging it at home would be like a calendar. Yeah, and it’s drawn so intricately. The Ox Turns the Universe (Good luck sign) It says touching different parts can bring different kinds of good luck. Touch the ox’s head… Touch the ox’s tail… Good from the start of the year to the end. Renhe Temple dates back to the Qing Dynasty. It’s one of the earliest local信仰 centers (xinyang zhongxin). Its exact founding year is unknown, but according to the oldest existing stele inscription in the temple, it was renovated in 1807 by local gentry due to the temple’s aging. Therefore, it’s推测 (tuice – inferred) to have been initially built in the late 18th century or earlier. Now, Renhe Temple is designated as a Changhua County Historic Monument and is also famous as the gathering place for the Erlin Incident, where sugarcane farmers gathered to fight for their rights. Later, we’ll also share the story of the Erlin Incident at the Sugarcane Farmers Incident Memorial Hall. Although Renhe Temple has been renovated multiple times, it still retains the traditional three-hall, two-courtyard Minnan architectural layout. Also, due to its location in a busy commercial area with limited space, the main structure developed inwards, becoming a shophouse-style temple. It’s narrow and deep, possessing strong local characteristics. The hall doors all use wooden plank door screens. On either side of the main gate are rare wooden carved partition fans. The temple houses many plaques, including those from political celebrities like Yu Youren and Huang Chaochin, among others. They hold both religious and artistic value. This is a three-dimensional wood carving! The craftsmanship feels so exquisite. And I’m wearing matching outfits with Him! The same color. In the temple’s front courtyard, there’s a stone Gongdou measure. It looks like a large rice mortar. Its diameter and height are both 70 centimeters, or 2.3 Taiwanese feet, representing prosperity. The center is concave like a funnel, with a diameter of 30 centimeters, 1 Taiwanese foot. It was a public measuring tool used during market transactions in the past, symbolizing fair weighing, certified fair by Mazu. The main hall of Renhe Temple enshrines the Heavenly Holy Mother, Mazu. The statue is a rare rattan-woven, soft-body form, which is very special. On either side are Thousand-Mile Eye and Fair-Wind Ear. The rear hall enshrines Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy), flanked by the Child-Giving Goddess and the Earth God. Unexpectedly, Renhe Temple’s main business, besides being a temple, also includes额外投资 (ewai touzi – additional investment in) a construction company. Everyone, come look! Look at their incense sticks, bundled like steel rebar! So beautiful, don’t you think? So neat! Renhe Construction. Located next to Erlin Market, Ba-wan Shou is said to have really amazing ba-wan. That’s right. They steam it first, then fry it. And it’s crowded from morning till night! Always a queue. Yeah. Every time we pass by, there’s always a line. I’ve also never had a fried ba-wan before. I wonder how the texture is. Yeah, look, really… It looks very crispy. Not bad… The boss lady recommended that if you can handle spicy food, it’s best to add a little bit of chili. They say it increases the satisfaction level. So crispy! Hey, I’ve noticed Erlin people are really good at frying things. Let’s try it right away. Look at its fried skin, so perfect! Wow, this is the first time in my life I’ve eaten a ba-wan with a skin fried to a crisp like this. Yeah. It’s kind of颠覆 (dianfu – overturned) my impression of ba-wan. I think it’s quite tasty. Tasty. I think I could have another four! Another four? Four at every shop? Whether it’s noodles, ba-wan, or meat fries, you always have to get six portions. Wow, look! The meat inside the ba-wan… This is like a meat羹 (geng – thick soup) piece! This piece of meat is so big! A whole strip. Yeah. Is this a pork fillet strip? It’s huge! I think adding chili increases the爽度 (shuangdu – refreshing/spicy kick satisfaction). Its spiciness is like this… A quick spicy kick. It doesn’t have that uncomfortable lingering burn. It’s pretty good, just add a bit and… Satisfying! I think the texture of their fried ba-wan is completely different from regular ba-wan. A flavor I’ve never had before. Really, this is also my first time trying this kind of texture in a ba-wan. I think I’m falling in love with it. And there’s a lot of bamboo shoots inside. So even though it’s fried, it doesn’t feel greasy. Really delicious. So good! Erlin people are too good at frying things. Located next to Erlin Market, Ba-wan Shou is a place that friends who come by absolutely cannot miss this fried ba-wan. Got it! And the boss gave me an extra bitternensis (stone lotus)! How nice of him! Yeah. Thank you, boss! So hot! Right, let’s first bring the papaya milk we got earlier over here to Renhe Temple to drink. That’s right, we just had herbal tea, and now immediately another cup of papaya milk. It’s so hot! They say what makes this papaya milk stand out is that it’s made using milk powder. So good! My wife’s face is telling everyone that if you come to Erlin, you must drink this papaya milk. So rich, so smooth. And because it’s so hot, that icy sensation going down the throat, the esophagus, is so refreshing. So cool and icy. Wow. Its texture is super thick. It has a kind of thick, slightly viscous feel, huh? Yeah, they’re quite special. Because most places use fresh milk, but they use milk powder to make it. So it’s said to have a kind of slushy feel. I’d say it’s currently the best papaya milk we’ve had, in my personal opinion. The ceiling. Top-tier. Yeah, it’s really one of the best we’ve tasted! Even though it has that slushy texture, don’t you think the slush particles are very fine? Yeah, really fine. It’s the Wagyu of papaya milk! Melts in your mouth. Yeah, it really does! Is that so? Really… The two great kings of papaya milk: Gudu and Dongxi Yan. Rich, mellow, smooth, fragrant, and silky. What’s wrong? It’s amazing, huh? I’ve already used all the adjectives I’ve ever learned in my life. In early Erlin, there were three cinemas: Erlin, Wanguo, and Zhongyang. None of these three exist anymore. The place you see now, Youquan Pharmacy, is the former site of the Wanguo Theater. Diagonally across is the former site of the Zhongyang Theater. On this former cinema street, let’s take you all to explore. The former site of the Erlin Theater we mentioned earlier is currently this piece of land behind me that looks like a large empty lot. It’s at the intersection of Rulin Road and Dacheng Road, on the same side as the Hong Ruizhen bakery. If you come, don’t get the wrong place. This old toy store, Individuality Space, is said to be a shared childhood memory for many Erlin people. I didn’t know Hong Ruizhen sold these kinds of cookies besides sandwiches. Haven’t seen them before. Yeah. So thick! Unboxing Hong Ruizhen sandwiches. That’s right. The Hong Ruizhen branch we bought from today in Erlin, I believe everyone is more familiar with it than we are, no need for much introduction. Besides the traditional sandwiches, this old Hong Ruizhen store in Erlin also has traditional pastries that are rare in other branches. And it’s said that even though every Hong Ruizhen branch is operated by relatives of the Hong family, apparently because the operators are different, the taste can vary slightly between branches. Oh really? Then we must try it. And I heard that the Erlin branch is considered by some to be the most classic and best-tasting one. Okay. So, can it defeat the flavors we’ve tried at other branches before? Let’s try it for you right away. Today we bought the most traditional original flavor, right? Yeah, and we also bought a strawberry cheese flavor. Haven’t had that much before. Sometimes when I wanted to buy it in Taipei, it seemed sold out. It sells out very easily. Sometimes in Taipei, passing by a Hong Ruizhen store and wanting to buy, the signs are all hung up: Sold Out x1 Sold Out x2 Sold Out x3 Sold Out x4 I see other people buying them by the box. Yeah. But I never quite understood what the hype is all about. So let’s try it today. This is the classic one. And this is the strawberry one. I think it seems… a little bit more? !? Is that so? The spread in the middle layer is more generous. Let me try it right away. There is! Right? I think its… I’m not sure if it’s mayonnaise… I’ll define it as mayonnaise sauce. It does seem to be spread more thickly. Yeah. So the mayonnaise flavor is more pronounced when eating. Paired with the aroma of the ham and the egg, it seems to have a bit more texture compared to other branches. So this legend is verified. It’s true. Not an urban legend. So what netizens say is verified successfully. Has reference value. For here or to go?
(Eating at the ice shop) For here. For here, right? Yes. Shooting in summer definitely requires eating ice. Yeah. Today, my wife brought me to this place in Erlin that is also reportedly very famous: Gongkou No.1 Ice Shop. Yeah, also an old-established ice shop inside the market. Yeah, their signature is this Five-Ingredient Ice. You can choose five toppings, and it’s only 50 NTD! You’re scooping up the… Yeah, I’m scooping up the QQ (chewy balls). And for the toppings, they say a must-try is this glutinous rice QQ small tangyuan. Q (Chewy)! You can really taste a bit of that glutinous rice fragrance. When we went to Yunlin, there were also many… Are people in central and southern Taiwan just really good at making tangyuan? The ones they make are so delicious! And besides the original flavor here, you know what? They also have two kinds of seasonings here that you can add extra. Look, on the table there’s suanmei (sour plum), and also donggua (winter melon). You’d probably go crazy with this one, right? That’s right. Add a bit of the sour one and see. Wow, I like adding the sour one! Really? It’s sour and sweet, and very refreshing in summer. I think adding it turns it into a completely different flavor. Right? This flavor is familiar, but I can’t place it right now. Is it like the one in Ximending, Chengdu Yangtao Ice? Yeah… It’s quite similar to the taste of Ximending’s Chengdu Yangtao Ice. Now let me try adding the winter melon one. It’s like that… winter melon tea turned into a thicker syrup. Putting it in like this. Handsome. You are totally on point. As soon as I heard “sweet,” I immediately reached out to grab it. Since it’s sweet, no need to hold back. Too much. My wife likes the sour plum. I like the winter melon. This is pretty good. One bowl of ice, three ways to eat, three flavors. Really! One bowl of ice, three flavors. Eating it this way is quite fun. Really cools you down to the core. Very delicious! Hurry, it’s about to melt! Okay. No more talking… It’s melting away, eat quickly! You’re copying me. Behind us is this training hall built during the Japanese era in 1922, a Japanese-style martial arts training ground. Now, only two remain in all of Changhua: one is located in Changhua City, and the other is located here in Erlin, the Budokuden. During the Japanese era, it served as a martial arts training ground for Japanese police. After the war, it continued to be used as a judo and physical training center for the Erlin police station officers. But later, after the Erlin police station’s new sports hall was completed, this place was converted into office space. So, in 2004, it was registered as a historic building. Also, due to long-term use and natural deterioration, it is currently under restoration and is expected to be completed this year, 2025. Kinda looking forward to it. Located next to the Erlin Household Registration Office, right across from the Wangkelong Hardware Store, this building was formerly the very famous Dafu Hospital. It was established in 1940 by Dr. Chen Dafu from a prominent local family. It’s a building that combines Taiwanese, Japanese, and Western elements into one architectural style. This was a very famous garden-style hospital building at the time. It had a small bridge, pond, and flowing water in the front, and tall trees in the back. It was like an oasis in the city. Unfortunately, later, because no one continued to manage and operate it, it gradually fell into disrepair and remains abandoned. Located within Erlin Elementary School, the Erlin Sugarcane Farmers Incident Memorial Hall is one of the landmarks of Erlin Township. It was formerly the principal’s dormitory built in 1938 during the Japanese Showa era. It retains the elegant style of Japanese architecture. Now serving as a permanent exhibition space, it documents the 1925 Erlin Sugarcane Farmers Incident’s related literature and historical materials. The Erlin Sugarcane Farmers Incident occurred in the 1920s. The Japanese government vigorously promoted sugar industry development, implementing the “Industrial Japan, Agricultural Taiwan” policy. After the successful cultivation of Ponlai rice in 1922, the competition between rice and sugar worsened the plight of sugarcane farmers. In 1925, local Erlin doctor Li Yingzhang established the first farmers’ organization in Taiwan, the Erlin Sugarcane Farmers Association. They negotiated sugarcane prices with the Lin Benyuan Sugar Company. After negotiations broke down, it led to a farmer refusal-to-harvest protest. Japanese police forcefully suppressed it, sparking widespread social concern. This became known historically as the Erlin Sugarcane Farmers Incident. Additionally, the campus also preserves a wooden auditorium completed in 1938. At that time, large buildings mostly used reinforced concrete structures, but this auditorium was built purely from wood. The exterior walls use rain-screen boards made of cypress and fir, and it features neatly arranged wooden buttresses to support the roof weight. This design was quite rare both then and now. It is now designated as a historic building. Next to Erlin Market, there’s a nameless cabbage pancake stall that many Erlin people have grown up eating since childhood. High value for money – only 25 NTD each! Look, so big! Almost as big as my palm. You know, while we were waiting earlier, customers kept coming. And I heard one say they wanted 10! Wow, eating 10 at once? Is he Ip Man? Business is really good! Let’s try it for you right away. And even before eating, you can already smell the cabbage aroma a bit. Really? This one’s for you. Oops. Accidentally revealed we bought two. Of course! How can you share just one? And the boss fries them fresh. His oil is very clean and clear. Yeah, rarely see frying oil that is so澄澈 (chengche – clear and transparent). You can see directly to the bottom of the pot. Oil like Lake Tazawa. The filling tastes really good. Mmm… The filling tastes good, delicious. It’s really full of cabbage inside. And I think this fried coating is amazing. No greasy taste at all. None at all. The outer skin is truly crispy. And the sweetness of the cabbage filling… Wow. A perfect match! It’s hot! So hot! By the way, because they’re freshly fried and business is good, sometimes if you come and the boss is still frying, he’ll tell you roughly what time to come back and pick it up. Very convenient. You can go explore nearby first and come back to pick it up at the scheduled time. We went to the market earlier, and after about… 20 minutes came back to get it directly. And the boss remembered very clearly how many you ordered. It seems like usually in markets or breakfast shop bosses have amazing memories. They remember what you ordered without writing it down. They can recall it. Very impressive. Don’t you think the outer skin tastes a bit like a Chinese cruller/double twist? Yeah, I think the dough skin has a little bit… not a sugary sweetness, but a kind of pleasant aftertaste sweetness. So the dough skin has some flavor, and paired with the filling, it’s really delicious! Never thought we’d run into international superstar Adele in Erlin Township! Here in Erlin Township, the Dongluo River Kapok Road is along Changhua’s Dongluo River, flowing from Pitou Township through to Erlin Township. Along the riverside path, they’ve planted over 5 kilometers in length of kapok trees, more than 600 plants. The flowering season is every year from February to April. So when the time comes, this entire stretch becomes an orange-red tunnel. It’s just that we’re here now out of season, so we see a green tunnel, which is also nice. The Dongluo River, also known as the Old Zhuoshui River, is an important agricultural lifeline in southern Changhua. It nurtures the high-quality rice of Pitou Township and Erlin Township and is known as the mother river of Changhua. The winding riverbanks are planted with flowers and trees, and a bicycle path is planned, making it a new tourism highlight in Changhua in recent years. The Dongluo Bikeway, about 14 km long, starts at the Xihu Sugar Refinery, following the former Taiwan Sugar narrow-gauge railway track. After passing the Old Zhuoshui River railway bridge, it turns into the Dongluo River riverside. Crossing the Ludao Bicycle Bridge over Provincial Highway 19, it eventually reaches the Tianwei Highway Garden. The Erlin section was converted from the old sugar railway, about 5.2 km long. The starting point is roughly opposite the Erlin Fire Department, and the endpoint is at the intersection of Changhua County Routes 170 and 171. Along the way, you can enjoy vast pastoral scenery. In different seasons, you can also encounter the beautiful silk floss tree flower path and buckwheat flower fields, among other colorful floral seas. Hidden here is also the old Taiwan Sugar Railway Xiantian Station, the only preserved station site on the Erlin line. It holds great historical significance. Therefore, the Dongluo River Bikeway is not only suitable for exercise and leisurely strolls but also combines natural scenery with cultural history, becoming a characteristic tourist route in Erlin Township. Wife, get ready to leap over the dragon gate like a carp! Next to the Jiushe Daian Temple, there’s a fish pond that has been converted into a lakeside path about 500 meters long. Along the way, there are also some installation artworks and a children’s play area. It’s very suitable for families to come here for a walk. And in the evening, they light up the area, so you can not only stroll but also enjoy the scenery. Jiushe Daian Temple, established in 2004, primarily worships the Five Lords’ Thousand Years. The temple architecture is grand, and incense is thriving. It’s an important信仰中心 (xinyang zhongxin – faith center) for the Jiushe community. Besides the lakeside path within the park, there’s also a lake corridor, a pavilion in the lake center, and a rotating waterwheel. You can feed fish and take walks. The daytime scenery is leisurely; at night, the lake corridor transforms into a shining rainbow bridge, dazzling and dreamy. Therefore, this place is also called the “Night Version Seven-Color Dream Park.” It’s very suitable to come here for a walk in the evening to enjoy the scenery and listen to the live band’s superb performance. The “Field Turtle Project” in Erlin Township was initiated by retired Sun Yat-sen University professor Professor Huang Qingxiang upon returning to his hometown. “Field Turtle” refers to elderly farmers who have spent their lives bent over working in the fields for a long time. To help these elderly farmers, he launched this project, aiming to promote local agricultural products through organic farming methods.

Everyone, see this very beautifully painted small house? I’m very familiar with it. When I was little, with my grandma, going to the fields to check the water levels, we would go into this house to start the water pump motor, pumping groundwater up into the fields. This is called “baoshui” or “flooding.” It was my own childhood “Field Turtle Project.” Drank too well this afternoon. Met it at the night market, decided to buy again. Another cup! We’ve now arrived at the Erlin Saturday-only Jin Zi Jiao Night Market, it’s incredibly huge! Probably the largest one we’ve filmed at recently. That’s right. It has everything: children’s play area, outdoor claw machines, steak, and also general merchandise. Super huge. And there’s even a fire dance performance! So cool! I heard he came from Taichung. But we didn’t catch his troupe’s name. Can’t promote him. But it’s okay… We found Gudu here! They have a stall here today, so happy! That’s right, we said it’s really good. Look, we met it again, so we had to buy it. As soon as we saw it, buy! The daytime Erlin Market… we’re back again at night. That’s right, because at night this place, Sunlight Old Shop Braised Pork Rice, has really impressive operating hours: from 5 AM to 1 AM! So they only close for a few hours in between. Oh my, people in Erlin never go hungry – they can eat braised pork rice anytime! Yeah, breakfast and late-night snack都可以 (dou keyi – both can). Yeah… Let’s eat. Wow, their braised pork smells so good! Yeah, and the boss is very considerate. When ordering just now, he asked if you wanted leaner or fattier meat. You can choose your preferred cut. That’s right. The piece of braised pork they give is quite large. Yeah, and there’s pickled mustard greens. Also, I read online that the must-have standard pairing is definitely adding a sunny-side-up egg. Not bad, I wonder if the egg is runny. Wow, a runny egg would be sinful. Wow, this fatty part and this lean part… Still steaming! Piping hot. Cheers with the braised pork! The lean part is tender! It melts in your mouth with one bite. The flavor is on the heavier side. And eating the fatty part isn’t scary. Not scary. I think the pickled mustard greens are delicious! The mustard greens have a slightly spicy aftertaste. Because this is quite heavy, and paired with the mustard greens’ spicy aftertaste, I think it正好 (zhenghao -正好) cuts the grease. Just right. It means I want it all, right? Exactly. Finished eating. So, our Erlin itinerary today is almost over here. Honey, which spot left the biggest impression on you today? I think it’s the wine cellar from the beginning. ! ! The wine cellar? Yeah, because actually, I don’t really drink often and I’m not good with alcohol. But I never expected that locally in Taiwan, they could brew such amazing wine. I was really impressed. How about you? For me, the most impressive was probably the Dafu Hospital. ! ? Because I personally really like that kind of Japanese garden architecture, like Japanese residences, nagaya (row houses). And it actually had those “Haru-style” lanterns inside. Very beautiful. How about the food? For food… Still the papaya milk. I had papaya milk all day today. I think it’s just so rich, mellow, and fragrant! With one sip, the whole esophagus feels cool. And that papaya and milk combination is too amazing. I’m fully invested. Yeah… A branch in Taipei. As for me, my favorite was their Ba-wan Shou. It was the first time in my life I ate a ba-wan with a fried, crispy skin like that. I was really impressed. But actually, after eating our way through Erlin today, I think all the food is highly recommended. So friends coming to Erlin absolutely must not miss the local delicacies and also the papaya milk. Exactly! Everything’s a hit! Hope everyone enjoyed our video today too. Please give us a thumbs up, subscribe, and share it out. Thank you, everyone. See you in the next video. Bye-bye! Adding some ba-wan seems really tasty. It’s just too delicious. I want to go add some more ba-wan. Okay. Then we’ll just ignore this. Okay. The channel has changed hands! It’s not IROIRO anymore, it’s Eileen’s channel now!
