“Onneyu Onsen,” Kitami’s inner sanctum . Press the subtitle and CC buttons to enjoy full subtitles. Hello everyone, this is Watabi. This time, I’m heading to the hot spring town of Kitami City, Hokkaido. Despite its tourist attractions and wonderful hot springs, it’s in decline, so I’d like to take a look at the current situation. Located in eastern Hokkaido, Kitami City is my destination. I’m heading to Onneyu Onsen, a hot spring town lined with inns and hotels along the clear waters of the Muka River. It’s the best hot spring I’ve ever soaked in, so I ‘m looking forward to it. I drive through the mountains, surrounded by nature, to my first destination. A sea of clouds surrounded the area, creating a fantastical world. We’re almost there. Just four minutes left. We’ve arrived. I visited this place once before on my last visit to Hokkaido, and there’s a waterfall called “Yamabiko Falls.” It started raining last time, so I stopped filming immediately, so I decided to come again. It’s actually much more beautiful in winter, but the autumn leaves are beautiful right now, so I decided to come. It’s only 200 meters from here, and the road isn’t too steep, so it’s easy to see. This is a brown bear habitat, so I’ll bring bear spray and a bear bell. This is a casual spot, so I think I’ll be fine as long as I wear proper sneakers. The autumn leaves are beautiful. But they’re probably gone soon. I head there, keeping an eye on my surroundings. That’s the waterfall. Last time, the waterfall was a little frozen, but it looks fine this time. It’s a path like this, so I don’t think I’ll get lost. It’s only 200 meters. We’ve arrived. This is it. The area around Yamabiko Falls is covered in moss, creating a mystical atmosphere. It’s a 28-meter straight waterfall. Huh? Was there really not much water? But it’s still very impressive. This is Urami Falls, so you can go behind the waterfall. As expected, there isn’t much water, but it’s still impressive. This is the back side of the waterfall. A gentle, cool breeze blows. Is this a statue of Acala? I’m not sure. The offerings have turned muddy from the wind and humidity. I think there was a Kewpie doll at that shrine over there… There it is. What is it there for? It feels a little creepy. I saw a building on this side, so I’d like to go and see it. I didn’t notice it last time. It seems there’s another waterfall up ahead. Is it a shrine? What is this? It’s deep in the mountains, but it’s surprisingly beautiful. Well, it doesn’t seem like anyone lives there, but maybe it’s used for events related to the waterfall? That’s the kind of building it is. Anyway, I’ll head back to the waterfall. So this is what the waterfall looked like. It’s about 200 meters from the parking lot, so I recommend you check it out. Now, I’ll head back to the parking lot. I’m back. The trip back went by in no time. Now, I’m heading towards the hot spring town. It takes about an hour and a half to get there. I’ll take it easy and enjoy the journey. The car in front of me is owned by an old lady, and she was cleaning the benches and toilets in front of the waterfall. Onneyu Onsen is home to three hot springs: Onneyu Onsen, Takinoyu Onsen, and Ponyu Onsen. We’re almost there. Just 2km away. We’ve arrived. This is the roadside station, Onneyu Onsen. Onne means “big hot spring” in the Ainu language, and since prehistoric times, the Ainu have used the naturally flowing hot springs in this area while hunting. Kitami is famous for its mint , which once accounted for 70% of the world’s production. Nearby, there’s a red fox farm and an aquarium, so the roadside station doesn’t seem to be in decline, but I’d like to take a stroll and see what the situation is like. This building houses restrooms and a tourist information center. Next to the roadside station is “Karakuri Kingdom,” which sells a variety of souvenirs. It seems like you can also eat there. Beyond that, there’s something resembling a clock tower. It appears to be one of the largest cuckoo clock towers in the world. It seems to operate from April to November 3rd, and I wonder if the cuckoo clock’s cuckoos come out every hour from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM? This is the cuckoo clock. There’s also a wooden amusement park and a local product display and sale here. To the right of this is the aquarium. I think the clock will start moving soon. I’d like to look around until then. There are three games like this that I don’t really understand. Press this… huh? I have no idea how to play. What does that mean? Ah! I see! Every time your score goes up by 5, this doll goes up. Yes, it was a game I didn’t really understand. I can go up here, so I’ll try. It can only go up this far. I guess the doll comes out when the time comes. This kind of performance lasted for five minutes. Kids might enjoy it. As they say, the cuckoos were huge, as they’re the largest in the world. Wooden amusement park. This is the local product display and sale here. Next to the local product display and sale is an aquarium called the “Northern Land Aquarium.” Since I’m here, I’d like to check it out as well. “Minks have appeared.” I don’t know what a “mink” is, but perhaps it’s a type of weasel? Various fish are swimming in the pond next to it. This is it. This is what it looks like when you enter the entrance. Not only fish, but turtles are on display, too. It seems they’re not just displaying local creatures, but freshwater fish from around the world. This is a doctor fish. While I’m here, I’ll try putting my hand in. Doctor fish are so big! It feels like I’ve never tasted one before. This is a small doctor fish. This one is gentle. “Tetraodon mubu” is a freshwater pufferfish. I had no idea. It looks like a pufferfish that lives in the ocean. This is a goldfish. It’s so beautiful. It would be great to have a space like this inside my house. This is a transparent fish. Its body is so clear, and it has almost no internal organs. This is an arowana. This is a giant eel, but it’s bigger than my arm…or maybe about the size of my thigh. It looks like it wouldn’t be edible even if the bones were removed. This isn’t a soft-shelled turtle, but a turtle called a pig-nosed turtle. Wow! Amazing! It’s huge! That’s a fish called a Colosoma. There are Colosoma, Redtail Catfish, and for some reason, a small guppy. This is a “Taimen”. It’s a fish that anglers dream of owning. Here are juvenile “Taimen”, as well as “Lucky Loach”, “Siberian Salamander”, “Japanese Crayfish” , and this one is apparently called “Himemasu”. Is this a salmon? Amazing. By creating a waterfall in the tank and creating a rapid current like this, we can observe the fish’s natural behavior in a natural environment. It seems that the cold spring water from Onneyu helps the fish grow larger than usual. It wasn’t on today, but apparently there’s an event called “Itadakimasu Live” where you can see the cycle of life, where one eats and the other is eaten. It’s a cruel experience, but it seems like it’s still possible to experience it. The aquarium was surprisingly worth seeing. Personally, I had a lot of fun. The exit leads to the souvenir corner. They sell a lot of souvenirs, and they’re really interesting. They have stuffed toys with lures attached to the end. They sell various Hokkaido souvenirs. I bought a few things at the roadside station. They ‘re not related to this area, but these are potato chips I made with the students from Abashiri High School. They have a crunchy candy texture. Apple-flavored candy. Speaking of Kitami, mint is a thing. I bought some mint candy. I also bought some mint mint. There’s a red fox farm nearby, so I’d like to go. It’s within walking distance, but I’ll go by car. Oh, is it closed today? Are they usually open? No, I don’t know… Huh? Closed? Closed? It’s not closed, is it? Oh, but there’s a car parked there. Wait a minute, is it closed? Or is it like this? Ah! It’s open! I thought the ranch had gone out of business. This is the “Northern Fox Ranch.” Since the red foxes and Hokkaido raccoon dogs roam free, bringing in food and entering unpaved areas are prohibited. Apparently, smartphones can be stolen if they’re placed near the ranch, so I’ll read the warning signs carefully before entering and enjoy the area with caution. I thought it was a famous tourist spot, but the exterior made it hard to tell if it was open. The shutters were down around there. The entrance is here. Admission is 500 yen per adult. There are lots of onions for sale. The souvenir corner is on the left as you enter, and this is the reception. I got a JAF discount, so I was able to enter for 400 yen. Apparently, touching the foxes is prohibited. This is the entrance, and there’s a fox waiting there. I wonder if the fox will run away if I open it? Oh, it went over there… A raccoon dog. It must feel good basking in the sun. It’s crying. Hello . Hello . Hello. Hello. Um… hello. Wow! So cute! They’re allowed to roam free like this. Unlike wild foxes, their fur is so beautiful. There was no food for feeding them, so I guess you can’t feed them? That’s about it. I wanted to see the raccoon dog too, but I couldn’t find any. It seems tourists aren’t allowed to feed them, so they don’t come near. They ‘re either mostly sleeping or busy . They pee, scratch themselves, and behave like dogs. Little fox house. Wow, so cute. I had fun. There are just foxes and raccoons here, but it’s very relaxing. Entering the store from here leads to the souvenir corner. A souvenir shop with a nostalgic feel. I enjoyed the Kita Kitsune Ranch. Turning left from here seems to lead to Onneyu Onsen town, so I’d like to take a stroll. The roadside station is on the left. I’ve walked about 100 meters, and it seems there’s a foot bath about 750 meters from here. 750 meters is quite a distance. This is the aquarium I just visited. This is Kita Kitsune Ranch… um…it’s completely deserted. Where is the hot spring town? It’s lunchtime now, and I haven’t seen anyone so far. Is this “Various Hokkaido Furs”? It seems to be a factory. There’s a sign that says, “Thank you for your hard work. Free raw milk, please help yourself.” Of course, this place isn’t open. It feels more like a residential area than a hot spring town. This road just keeps going on and on, so I’d like to walk further in. The houses are engulfed in vegetation. Same here. It’s deserted. There are quite a few residential houses, though. It doesn’t feel like a hot spring town. Maybe it’s a little further away. I’m back on the main road. This is the largest inn in this hot spring town. I think there were only two lodging facilities open in this hot spring town. Is this one closed? The flag is nice, though. This one is an izakaya. This one is a snack bar. The sign is very nice, so I wonder if it’s open? I wonder. It looks like this. This one is a shop, and this one is a shop. I’m not sure if the buildings around here are open, but there are a lot of them. It’s like this, and it’s completely deserted. There’s a lone toilet here. It’s really surprising how empty it is. I think this is probably the main street… Finally, I arrived at the foot bath. This is the foot bath. The hotel you can see in front is quite impressive, but it looks like it’s closed. This is the foot bath. The bath temperature seems to be 43 degrees. The water is a simple sulfur spring, and it seems to be closed in winter. There’s no hot water. The inside is filled with the smell of hydrogen sulfide. I love sulfur springs, so I wanted to soak my foot in the foot bath, but there was no hot water. It seems that winter season starts on October 1st. So it seems we’re already in winter. The scenery is beautiful, but …there are really no customers. This is a map of the surrounding tourist attractions. I wonder if these snack bars and izakayas are open. This sign is also beautiful. Number one is the aquarium we just visited. Number two is the roadside station. However, this roadside station only has a tourist information center and restrooms. Number three is the cuckoo clock. Kitakitsune Ranch, which we just visited. In front of the roadside station is “Karakuri Kingdom” and “Onneyu Onsen Flower Park,” where you can enjoy a variety of flowers throughout the year. It’s a relatively new park that opened in 2008, but it’s scheduled to close in 2026. The reasons for the closure are said to be a lack of significant increases in facility usage due to population decline and the cost of repairs due to aging. It seems that residents are expressing dissatisfaction and anxiety about the park’s closure. Is this the main street? It looks like this… Honestly, I didn’t expect it to be this bad. This is a true ghost town. Kitami City once thrived through mining and mint production. Apparently , it is now also known as the second Yubari City. Kitami City’s famous hot spring, Onneyu Onsen, has become even more desolate than I had imagined. The main reasons are unknown, but depopulation and a slump in the tourism industry in response to passenger demand are cited as some of the reasons. Until the end of the war, it was apparently designated as a sanatorium for the former army. After the war, in 1957, Route 39 opened as the “Daisetsu National Highway” via Sekihoku Pass. It became a popular tourist route connecting Sounkyo with Abashiri Quasi-National Park, the Shiretoko Peninsula, and Akan National Park, attracting many tourists. Currently, the area is in decline due to the slump in the tourism industry and depopulation. This building is on the verge of collapse. The floor has collapsed, making it unsafe and off-limits. The floor collapsed like this. Apparently, you could eat Genghis Khan here. This souvenir shop is next to a building on the verge of collapse, but it’s the only one still open. This hotel is truly impressive. Its distinctive color makes it stand out in this hot spring town. There’s really no one there, and the vacant houses are conspicuous. Depopulation is one of the reasons for the town’s decline. Across from the large, open hotel over there is a hotel called “Tsutsuji-so,” which is still open. About eight minutes from here, there’s a sister establishment of this one , a lodging facility that only offers bed-and-breakfast meals. It’s unmanned, and I’ve taken a day trip there to enjoy the hot springs . They’re open 24 hours a day, and the hot springs are incredibly smooth and silky, so I highly recommend them. This was also the only public bathhouse open, but it seems to have closed down. It looks like this now… All the shops are closed, so of course there’s no one there. Most of the buildings are dilapidated, so the only way to revive this hot spring town might be to demolish them and rebuild them. Even so, this is pretty awful. This is a clinic. What’s wrong? Are you alone? You look really angry. I’ll have lunch at this restaurant. I think it’s called “Mukagawa.” It’s on the first floor of a large building. A fried shrimp set meal is 1,200 yen. A ginger pork bowl is 1,000 yen. Thank you for the meal . It was incredibly delicious. I ate there. It was really delicious. The portions were generous and the prices were reasonable. I’ve booked a hotel about eight minutes away from here, so I’ll head there now. Right next door is a hot spring called “Yume Fuusen,” a sister establishment of Tsutsuji-so. This is it. They offer day-trip bathing, so there are a lot of customers. We’ve arrived. This is “Shiobe Tsurutsuru Onsen.” Let’s check in. This is the front desk. To the right of the front desk is the shop. This is the lobby. I’ll be staying on the second floor of the main building. This is it. It’s at the very end of here. This is it. My room is 225. It seems the annex is on the other side. Let’s take a look at the room. The entrance looks like this. The toilet is immediately to the left of the entrance. To the right of the entrance is the sink. Amenities like hand soap and toothbrushes are provided here. This is the room. It’s a very simple room like this. The room is 10 tatami mats in size. It’s 10 tatami mats in size. There’s a mirror and a kettle on the left. There’s also a TV, refrigerator, and cups here. This is a closet, but it has yukatas, towels, and bath towels. There’s nothing in the refrigerator. There’s a safe underneath. There’s a window, but I wonder if you can see the view. It’s beautiful! The autumn leaves outside the window in this room are so beautiful. Is that a forest right behind? It looks like some wild animals might pop out. There are no futons laid out here, so I imagine they’ll come and lay them out at mealtime. These are the sweets you get with your stay. Hot spring manju and burdock tea with black pepper. I’ve never had anything like that. Since I’m here, I’d like to have this set later. This is a map of the inn, but it’s a very large inn. First, this is the parking lot. Just inside the parking lot are the front desk, lobby, and shop. Here you’ll find karaoke, vending machines, a smoking area, and a soft drink corner. Going further, you’ll find the large public bath and open-air bath. On the left is the inn’s specialty, “Ryujin no Yu.” It’s reserved for guests from 3:00 PM. It’s very convenient. This is the dining area, Restaurant Shirakaba. I think dinner and breakfast are served here. The building you enter from the parking lot is the new wing, but all the guest rooms are in the main building. It was a weekday, but it was fully booked. It seems the hot spring here is closed from midnight to 5:00 AM. This is reserved for guests only from 3:00 PM, so I think it’s best to check in, soak in Ryujin no Yu, and then go to the large public bath in the morning when there are no day-trippers. This hot spring is 100% natural hot spring water. I decided to start at 5:30 PM. I have some time until 5:30, so I’ll go to Ryujin no Yu. Day-trip bathing costs 600 yen. This is the shop. They have fresh shiitake mushrooms. I was wondering what the soft serve corner was, and it seems they sell soft serve ice cream. They have a variety of soft serve ice creams like this. This is the shop, and beyond that is the restaurant. The restaurant and banquet hall. It seems to be connected to the main building and annex. This is Ryujin no Yu. Over there is the large public bath. There’s also a snack bar. Open from 8 PM to 11 PM. These are the men’s and women’s baths at Ryujin no Yu. Ryujin no Yu’s water is a simple sulfur spring (hypotonic alkaline, high temperature spring). It ‘s colorless, transparent, and tasteless. It also has a slight hydrogen sulfide smell. Ryujin no Yu is apparently a really good place. I went to Ryujin no Yu. The moment I stepped into the bathtub, the smell of rotten eggs filled the air, and the water was smooth, or rather, slippery. The shower, which probably uses the hot spring water, was so slippery I couldn’t tell if the shampoo and body wash had even been rinsed off. The water was of such incredible quality that it felt like I was soaking in bleach. It’s time for dinner, so I headed to the restaurant. This is what dinner looked like. This time, I upgraded the rice. This seems to be Shiretoko beef. It’s my first time eating it. They also serve abalone and other dishes, so I’m really looking forward to it. First , an aperitif. Easy to drink. First, salmon. Scallops. Delicious! Fatty tuna. It’s got a lot of fat on it. This is tiger prawns. They’re plump and melt in your mouth. Once it starts to boil, add the vegetables. This is Shiretoko beef roast beef. Yes, it’s delicious! Ezo abalone. I’ll have the Ezo abalone. It’s very soft and delicious. This is the liver. Delicious! Amazing meat like this. It’s thick. I ate it with the egg. It was so soft! What is this? This looks like Hokkaido Wagyu beef. It was so tender . This is what they call melt-in-your-mouth. This is “roasted duck with basil sauce.” What’s roasted duck? Let’s eat. This is conger eel soup. This is eel rice pot. It looks so delicious. The eel is lightly grilled. It comes with condiments. It’s so delicious. It’s so fluffy. There are two bowls of eel rice pot. And finally, dessert. It’s white bean print with muscat grapes and orange. Thank you for the meal . It was so delicious. They laid out the futons for me. The rice was really good. I’m so glad I upgraded. The price goes up a little, but the experience is completely different, so I recommend upgrading. I ‘m going to the large public bath now and get a good night’s sleep. Good morning. I’m off to take my morning bath. I’ve had my morning bath. You can drink the hot spring water from the large public bath. The bath area is completely glassed-in, allowing you to enjoy a view of the courtyard, amidst the stunning autumn foliage. Of course, you can also enjoy a relaxing soak in the open-air bath while gazing at the beautiful autumn foliage. Hokkaido is cold, so it was wonderful to be able to soak in the hot springs while feeling the chilly breeze outside. It was 7 o’clock, so we headed for breakfast. Breakfast looked like this. I took almost everything from the menu. There was also salad, fruit, and bread. There were six or seven types of drinks available. I had breakfast. It was delicious. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much because it was a buffet, but I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. The room was standard, but we enjoyed delicious dinner, and the hot springs were incredibly smooth. As for the price, it was 34,200 yen for one night and two meals for two adults. If I hadn’t upgraded, I could have stayed for under 30,000 yen, but I personally think it would have been worth upgrading if it was only around 2,000 yen per person. The total came to 17,100 yen per person. Even with the upgrade, it was only 17,100 yen, which I thought was really cheap. The delicious food, the smooth hot spring water, and the room, while quite ordinary, allowed for a view of the autumn leaves outside, making this a highly recommended inn. The staff were also kind and polite. This has nothing to do with the inn, but the group tourists were rude, or rather, extremely noisy… they were talking in the hallway, so I could almost hear them talking next door, and it continued until about 10pm. They were Japanese tourists. I really think Japanese people have worse manners than foreigners. If there hadn’t been any group tourists, I would have been very satisfied. It was a really nice inn. If there hadn’t been any group tourists, I would have been very satisfied. Now, let’s head to our next destination. This time, we’ve looked at the current state of Onneyu Onsen. What do you think? I recommend you visit too. See you in the next video! Thank you for watching until the end.

Thank you for this beautiful yet sad video. The images of autumn you show have a soothing effect on me, almost like hot bath🥰
Thank you for sharing your journeys with us, it was very pleasing to see the contrasts in the waterfall surrounded by the stunning autumn foliage, the empty onsen village was sad but perhaps is more lively in the season, altogether you showed us some interesting attractions, the colour of the foxes fur was so beautiful and the aquarium was luminous, the onsen looked like a good place to stay even in a standard room.
How strange. Only a couple days ago I was reading about Onneyu onsen thinking I wanted to go there. After watching your video the decline is heartbreaking. But it is still worth the visit because of the water quality, and the Onneyu hotel sounded so nice and welcoming. Perhaps if more people know about locations like that they will come to bring it back? I don't like crowds and Kitami and Onneyu sounded so good for a quiet time.
wow !!
thank you for sharing these journeys.
the fox house is amazing !!
You have a link to the channel for the music but do you know the name of the songs you play on the video, you choose great music it sets the mood of the video. Thanks from the UK.
We are convinced. Next Japan trip will be to Hokkaido. Last time was about 25 years ago – Noboribetsu, Mt. Yotei area and Otaru. And then, the ferry to Niigata. Gotta check out that silky, smooth onsen water. Btw, I think many people (any nationality), when part of a large group can be very obnoxious. I always have my earplugs (Yoko snores – and so do I). 🤣
