【ホテル探訪】箱根の森に佇む隠れ家リゾート「箱根リトリート före」温泉で過ごす大人の休日

Hello everyone, this is Okada from Architect’s Vacation! 🌞 Today, I ‘m visiting Hakone Retreat före, a tranquil resort nestled in the forests of Sengokuhara, Hakone. This resort blends nature and architecture , making it feel like you’re staying in the forest itself . It’s about a 90-minute drive from Tokyo. Once you exit the old highway, you’ll be greeted by a tranquil 50,000-square-meter native forest. The 37 modern rooms scattered throughout the forest exude a sophisticated yet warm atmosphere reminiscent of a Scandinavian resort. This retreat embodies the “luxury of doing nothing,” allowing you to enjoy private time in quiet harmony with nature . Let’s take a look at what kind of experience you can expect! The resort was designed by architect Akira Watanabe. Watanabe is also the architect behind Numazu Club , which we previously visited on this “Architect’s Vacation.” He is renowned for creating tranquil spaces where nature and architecture resonate with each other. The site is dotted with the undulating terrain, with a reception building that doubles as a restaurant, three accommodation buildings, a multi-purpose free space and terrace, and a hot spring that draws water from Gora Onsen. The impressive design blends the architecture into the landscape while respecting the forest’s topography and trees. The first building we visited was the reception building, which doubles as a restaurant. Its soft, arched design nestled in the forest is striking. The large glass walls gently frame the Hakone forest scenery, creating a sense of unity with nature. Moving further from the reception area, we entered the restaurant area, where you can enjoy cooking over a wood fire. The soft arched ceiling and full-length glass create an open, spacious space, creating an extraordinary, relaxing experience. We plan to have dinner here tonight, so we’re looking forward to seeing what kind of food we’ll be enjoying. Next, let’s take a look at this building across from the restaurant building. The uniquely shaped roof is striking, and this building was also designed by architect Akira Watanabe. Walking along the path surrounded by greenery, you ‘ll come across a glass-enclosed space facing the pond. Let’s take a peek inside. This is the “Café & Lounge,” which is open to guests. Enjoy complimentary coffee and other drinks, as well as cakes and other items for sale, for a luxurious break. The minimalist glass-walled space blends with the view of the pond and trees, allowing you to spend a quiet time in harmony with nature, creating a comfortable stay unique to this place. Next, we’ll take a look at the terrace, where you can relax reading, playing games, or simply enjoy the forest air. Climbing the stairs next to “Café & Lounge” is “FREE BIRD & Terrace.” A spacious wooden deck, featuring a signature tree, is surrounded by outdoor chairs and hammocks. This open terrace allows guests to enjoy their time however they like. It also appears to have an indoor free space, so let’s take a look. The relaxing interior, reminiscent of a living room, features a library corner and board games for the whole family to enjoy. The drink corner offers fragrant fruit teas and other beverages, creating a cozy atmosphere that makes you want to linger for hours. As a summer-only welcome service, guests can enjoy carefully crafted shaved ice, showcasing the natural flavors of the ingredients. Since we were there, we decided to order every flavor. Now, it’s time to head to our room. Our room is located above the Café & Lounge. While room types include Superior Twin and Fore Suite, we chose a Deluxe Double. The entrance is directly from the exterior corridor. Let’s take a look inside. The room measures approximately 50 square meters. The living room and bedroom are separate, offering views of Hakone’s lush greenery and the breath of the trees right next to you. Further inside, we find the spacious living space. A large window in the corner of the room offers a view of the lush forest and soft sunlight filtering through the trees. The spacious, U-shaped sofas are striking, offering a sense of relaxation and relaxation, as if you were at a vacation home. The furniture and lighting are simple and understated, creating a sense of calm and unity throughout the space. Open the windows and enjoy the breeze and sounds of nature . The phrase “Hakone retreat” is perfectly apt. A bench-height shelf is set along the wall, and there’s no television; only essential amenities like speakers are provided. Despite its minimalist design, it exudes a cozy atmosphere. A small side table is placed at the end of the shelf, and the bench itself is a distinctive design. A drip coffee set is provided, featuring carefully selected specialty coffee beans. The refrigerator is stocked with water, tea, and beer, allowing for personal enjoyment. Next, we turn to the room next to the entrance, which is the bedroom. A single double bed occupies a minimalist white space. The high-positioned windows frame the view, revealing a lush forest beyond. Everything, from the furniture to the lighting, is in tranquil harmony, carefully designed for a time spent in nature. While simple, it offers a deeply healing atmosphere for those who stay. Next, let’s take a look at the hot spring area, where you can soak in the waters surrounded by the lush greenery of Hakone. Walking along a 200-meter-long wooden deck path through the untouched forest, you ‘ll come across the hot spring building “ONSEN f,” nestled in the lush greenery. Hakone is home to 17 hot springs, and the water here comes from Gora Onsen, one of them, drawn from 460 meters underground. Let’s take a look at the soothing space that awaits you. First, enter the bathroom area and you’ll find the indoor bath. Surrounded by the scent of cypress and the soft steam of the hot spring, you ‘ll enjoy the forest view through the large windows below the sloped ceiling. The deep flavor of the wood’s aging is also one of the charms of this space. Stepping outside from here leads to the open-air bath. Soaking in the water while listening to the birdsong is a tranquil moment, almost like becoming part of the forest. This is truly the ultimate retreat experience, where you can fully enjoy nature and the hot springs . Now it’s time for dinner, so let’s head to WOODSIDE dining in the restaurant building. Tonight’s dinner is a little extravagant—a six-course full course meal prepared over a wood fire. For drinks, we choose from a free-flow menu of wine or champagne. It’s nice to be able to enjoy it at any time to pair it with the meal. Let’s start with a champagne toast. Each dish was enhanced by the aroma of the wood fire and the delicious flavors of the ingredients, a luxurious course unique to this region. It was a very satisfying dinner. Now, let’s relax and enjoy the evening. Breakfast, like dinner, will be served in the restaurant building, WOODSIDE dining. In addition to a Western-style buffet featuring seasonal local ingredients, you can also enjoy made-to-order dishes like Shinshu salmon eggs Benedict and WOODSIDE’s special BLT burger sandwich . Enjoying breakfast while feeling the morning sun filtering through the trees was a special experience unique to this hotel. So, what did you think of Hakone Retreat före? The space is designed to blend architecture and nature comfortably in a quiet forest. It was a tranquil place where you could even feel the passage of time slow down. The careful use of materials and the way light was incorporated created a spatial experience that gently embraced visitors. If you have the opportunity, I urge you to spend some time away from your daily routine in the forests of Hakone.
