The Yangming Theater near Shilin Night Market opened on May 15, 1955, and is one of Taipei’s earliest theaters. In the 1970s and 1980s, theaters like Shilin, Yangming, Guanghua, and Lifeng were popular dating destinations. However, with the emergence of cinemas like Vieshow and Miramar in Dazhi, the old theaters gradually closed. The Yangming Theater closed its lights on September 15, 2019, and now it can only be recalled through photos. Routes with small letters are called minibus routes. To increase public transportation in Taipei’s mountainous areas, the Taipei City Transportation Bureau launched minibus services in 1979. Mountain roads are narrower, and most routes are operated by medium-sized buses. Minibuses have been in operation for over 40 years. As the road width in mountainous areas changes, some routes have large buses. The minibus we took in this episode was one of them. The earliest minibus was launched by the Taipei City Bus Department on July 6, 1984. It runs from Shilin to Jingshanli. In the 1990s, on June 27, 2002 , and it started from MRT Jiantan Station. The route to the Jingshan Campground was renamed a shuttle bus . On January 6, 2004, the No. 15 bus was extended to Qingtiangang, and the “MRT Jiantan Station – Qingtiangang” route became the most familiar. On January 11, 2014, due to commuting demand on Lane 99, Jingshan Road , some shuttle bus routes were detoured to Lane 99 on their return trips. “Shanzihou” means “the back of the mountain.” In the past, traveling to and from Shilin required hiking over Dalunwei, hence the name. In the 1960s, the founding of Chinese Culture University here and the widening of Yangde Avenue made the relatively flat Shanzihou the most lively area on Yangmingshan. Turn right onto Jingshan Road. What attractions are there? Our first stop was Shanzihou. Walk back from Jingshan Road, turn right along Gezhi Road, and then turn left at Aifu 2nd Street. This is the Yangmingshan US Military Barracks, one of the scenic spots in the Shanzihou area. It’s near Taiwan Cultural University. There are approximately 150 buildings in the US military barracks area, which were used by US military officers, advisors , and their families stationed in Taiwan before the 1980s . After the US military left Taiwan , the houses in the barracks gradually became abandoned and idle. They were taken over by the Bank of Taiwan and the Council for Economic Planning and Development. Some of the buildings are rented out as residences, and are also used by American Institute in Taiwan staff. Some buildings are also used as restaurants. Walking straight ahead is Yangming Tianzhu Temple. During school terms, you can also take the Red 5 and 303 buses that bypass Taiwan Cultural University and get off at Yangming Tianzhu Temple. You need to gather here for the first attraction! OK everyone, we are now at Yangmingshan Main Temple. We are going to take you to a secret place in Yangmingshan called “Sapphire Spring”. You need to make an appointment to visit this secret place through the official website of Taipei Waterworks Park. After a successful appointment, a QR code will be sent to your registered mailbox. You can save it on your phone. After checking in, you need to scan the QR code with the service staff. After the QR code is successfully scanned, you will be given an admission card. Please be sure to wear it. The guided tour time of Sapphire Spring is from 9:30 to 11:00 in the morning. Now it’s almost time and we should prepare to set off to this secret place of Sapphire Spring. Let’s go! We set off promptly at 9:30am. We started walking from Aifu 2nd Street, next to Yangming Main Temple, along Lane 12 of Aifu 2nd Street, to discover this secret water source. The weather was perfect that day , and we could see Shamao Mountain and Datun Mountain. We followed the signs to the Tianmu Historic Trail entrance . There are over 200 stone steps leading down from here. If it rains or you’re worried about your balance, remember to bring hiking poles . When you see the sign for a water source (or “forbidden area”), turn right and you’ll reach your destination. The Caoshan Waterway System was developed in 1925 to accommodate Taipei’s rapidly growing population. The water source was discovered by the Japanese in Yangmingshan in 1925. Construction of the Caoshan Waterway took eight years, and it was completed in 1932. It diverts water from the Datun Waterfall, encompassing Zhuzihu Lake in Yangmingshan, Tianmu, and all the way to Yuanshan Reservoir . The entire system was designed by Mr. Tojiro Sano and registered as a Taipei City Historic Site in 2004. The Tianmu Historic Trail , also known as the Water Pipeline Road, was the route used to transport the Yangmingshan springs to the Tianmu area during the Japanese era. Therefore, water pipes can be seen throughout the entire hiking route. Before entering the Sapphire Spring , you’ll cross an arch bridge called the Caoshan Water Pipe Bridge . The outer layer of the concrete covers the water pipes, protecting them from erosion by volcanic sulfur and protecting the pure spring water from contamination . The waterfall water on the right may appear clear, but it is not drinkable ! Get ready to unveil the mystery of the Sapphire Spring! The Sapphire Spring boasts a constant flow of sapphire-colored water . Its name stems from the fact that the water gushes forth from the hornblende andesite rock, emitting a sapphire-like translucent glow when exposed to sunlight. Sapphire Spring water is a volcanic mineral water rich in sodium, calcium, zinc, and potassium. Located in a pristine mountain environment, it can be drunk directly without further filtration. The water source is eternally fresh, maintaining a temperature between 22°C and 26°C year-round. The nearby faucet is Sapphire Spring water , so bring your own empty bottle . I, of course, also enjoyed a drink! After admiring the precious Sapphire Spring , walk down to take photos with the water pipe bridge and waterfall , then absorb the negative ions for a complete relaxation. It felt like time flew by. As the tour drew to a close, we had to leave this precious water source. For those interested in the Caoshan Waterway Sapphire Spring, information is included at the end of the video. Leaving Sapphire Spring, I retraced my steps, passing through the US military barracks and enjoying lunch near Jingshan Road. In the afternoon, I caught the 15th bus again , heading to my destination at Qingtiangang. Why do both Jingshan Road and Pingjing Street have the word “Jing” in their names? Because Yangmingshan was once rich in indigo dyeing raw material, “dajing,” indigo dyeing was once one of Yangmingshan’s important traditional industries. In the early 19th century, it was widely cultivated in the valleys near Yangmingshan, and the dyeing industry was quite prosperous. However, after the invention of artificial dyes, the handmade indigo dyeing industry gradually declined. Xiao 15 not only serves the area around Jingshanli , but is also the preferred choice for outings to Qingtiangang and Lengshuikeng . A direct bus from Jiantan MRT Station saves the time of going to Yangmingshan Bus Terminal and then transferring to the 108 Park Bus. Furthermore, on weekends, if there are large crowds, a shuttle bus from Lengshuikeng to Qingtiangang is available at the Lengshuikeng Service Station, providing even more convenient transportation. The Tong Xiao 15 has a constant flow of passengers and is the most profitable of the minibus routes. I believe the Xiao 15 will remain an essential and important route in Yangmingshan. Okay, we ‘ve reached the final destination, Qingtiangang , and we’re ready to get off the bus. Qingtiangang was an important stop for early people traveling between Jinshan, Shilin, and Tianmu. Qingtiangang was formerly known as “Lingtou Rock” and is also the trailhead for the Yulu Ancient Trail. At the entrance to the Qingtiangang circular trail is the “Lingtou Rock Earth God Temple.” It’s called “Lingtou Rock” because there’s a huge rock directly behind the Earth God Temple. 200 years ago, the Zhuzishan Tea Factory moved here to this old temple. Just behind the new temple, the Fish Road Historic Trail, also known as the “Jinbaoli Road,” was built because fishermen from Jinshan had to walk their catch to Shilin, Dadaocheng, and other places to sell it. The Fish Road Historic Trail became an important industrial road for both business and daily life. The Tudigong Temple built here also became an important religious base for the ancestors along the way. It is also the oldest Tudigong Temple along the Fish Road Historic Trail. Going forward is the Qingtiangang circular trail. Qingtiangang is located in the center of the Datun volcanic peaks. It is a lava terrace formed by the early eruption of Zhugaoshan lava to the north. The Qingtiangang grassland, formerly known as Daling or Niupu, has been around since the late Qing Dynasty and the Japanese era. This is an important area for cattle grazing. During the Japanese era, the areas of Qingtiangang, Qigushan , Huangzuishan, Shitiling, and Dingshan were designated as the “Daling Pass Ranch” and implemented a cattle fostering system . In its heyday, there were approximately 1,600 cattle fostered here. With the mechanization of agriculture, the grazing industry gradually declined and the number of cattle decreased significantly. Some water buffaloes reproduced naturally in the Qingtiangang area . Currently, there are three herds of feral water buffaloes. Feral water buffaloes are wild and have strong defensive abilities. If tourists get too close , touch, or tease them, they may feel their safety is threatened and may engage in aggressive behavior such as butting. Please be careful not to get too close to the herds! I then continued along the Qingtiangang loop trail, passing two concrete bunkers and arriving at Pagoda Hill, the highest point of Qingtiangang. With an altitude of 830 meters , the hill offers a commanding view of Shamao Mountain, Qixing Mountain, Guanyin Mountain, and other scenic spots. On clear days, you can even see the Tamsui River and the greater Taipei area. The beautiful grasslands are a delight to behold in all seasons. Starting in October, the Miscanthus begins to bloom, and in autumn and winter, you can admire the Miscanthus flowers covering the hills. A visit to Qingtiangang for a spring outing is a must. After enjoying the beauty of Pagoda Hill, I returned to my hometown. Go down the mountain and return to the Qingtiangang circular trail. There is a road on the left that leads all the way to Lengshuikeng. This is the Lengqing Trail. As the name suggests, it is located between Lengshuikeng and Qingtiangang . It is 1.6 kilometers long and connects to the Zhonghu War Preparation Road. It passes through Qixing Mountain and Qigu Mountain to Lengshuikeng. The name Lengshuikeng originated from the mid-Qing Dynasty. It was a lake formed by the lava blockage between Qixing Mountain and Qigu Mountain. Later, the lake dried up due to the outflow of lake water, and the lake bottom was exposed to form a depression. The hot springs here are named because the temperature is only 40 degrees Celsius, which is much lower than the temperature of hot springs in other areas. Pass by Jixinlun Viewing Platform . Located at an altitude of 763 meters, the area is named for its heart-shaped shape. During the Qing Dynasty, it was the site of the Henan Yongjun garrison and training grounds. During the Japanese era, it was part of a ranch. The remains of a former cattle shed are hidden in the surrounding forest. Today, it is surrounded by trees and Miscanthus. Although the cattle population has greatly decreased, traces of cattle grazing on the Miscanthus can still be seen. Continue towards Lengshuikeng. This is the Lengshuikeng Ecological Pond, which boasts a rich ecosystem. Between 1955 and 1965, Ruiyong Mining Company excavated sulfur mines in Lengshuikeng, where waste soil was dumped. The low-lying area naturally formed a landslide pond, which was once a reservoir in 199. Over the past year, the bridge has been transformed into an ecological pond and used to rehabilitate Taiwan water leeks. However, due to the hazardous surrounding environment, it was closed to the public . It officially opened in March 2015 and offers a relaxing spot for the public. The Jingshan Suspension Bridge, approximately 50 meters long, features reddish-brown columns, black steel cables, and log decking. The sulfur-smelling stream beneath the bridge is a tributary of the Neishuangxi River, the source of which flows into the Neishuangxi River. Nearby are the remains of a former sulfur mine. Follow the signs for Milk Lake to the Milk Lake Observation Deck. From above, you can gaze down at a pool of milky white water. Doesn’t this unique color resemble milk? However, you can’t drink from this Milk Lake! Milk Lake was one of the main pits used for open-pit mining by the Ruiyong Mining Company in the early days . Due to the lack of clean water flowing through it , rainwater and surface water accumulated over time, forming a pool where metamorphic mineral components dissolved in the water . Over time, these accumulated white precipitates dissolved at the bottom of the pool , creating a milky white lake appearance when exposed to sunlight. Leaving Milk Lake , you’ll reach the end of the Lengqing Trail. Next to the Lengshuikeng Visitor Center is a cafe where you can have a bite to eat. However, what other attractions are near Lengshuikeng? From the parking lot, walk forward to the Lengshuikeng public hot spring bathhouse. The hot springs at Lengshuikeng naturally gush out from the rock crevices at the eastern foot of Qixing Mountain. They are heated by indirect conduction from groundwater and are low-temperature, weakly acidic, and have a temperature of approximately 40°C . They were originally used as a bathhouse for employees at the Ruiyong Mine until it closed in 1965. After the Yangmingshan Mine Administration was established in 1985, the area was converted into a public hot spring bathhouse with separate rooms for men and women, as well as an outdoor foot bath . It ‘s free, but please be aware of the relevant regulations when entering . With so many attractions to explore, are you thinking of a day trip to Yangmingshan like me? Why not take the 15 bus? Okay! Everyone , this episode successfully took you through the Yangmingshan Sapphire Spring , Qingtiangang, Penny Hill, and Lengshuikeng. It was a very fulfilling itinerary . We hope you enjoyed it! This episode is recorded for you here. If you like our videos, please like, subscribe, share and turn on the bell! I am Albert and we will see you in the next video. Bye Bye~
