The Real Taste of Paradise 🇿🇦 vA13-S2

(De Vlugt, South Africa) – Morning, my friends, from a beautiful,
very remote place in South Africa! – Hello! – Hello! – There we go! – Great. – Breakfast. I’m just going
to get the cutlery for you. – Okay, thank you very much. – “Môre, môre”. – Morning!
– “Môre, môre”. – Do you like it? – Yeah, very nice. – Very nice. – Yo!
Wow! First time we see that one. – First time? Yeah, yeah, I imagine. Yeah. – The same as a bicycle? – The same
as a bicycle. Yeah. – Ah, it’s really soft. – But it’s electrically assisted.
– Okay, okay, okay. – But it’s a bicycle. I mean, it’s like a bicycle. Yeah.
– Yeah, the same as a bicycle. Yeah. – Exactly, the same. – The truck. It’s
a truck. – And the light. – Yes. – Wow! And that one took a lot of money?
– Yes, it’s expensive. Yeah. – Okay. Nice to meet you!
– Nice to meet you. Yeah. Great. Thank you! – This is
a bit of a jalapeno sauce, if you like something
a little bit with a… – Ah, jala… Okay. – Yeah, it’s
very, very nice. It’s not too hot. – With what? With the…? – Just…
Yeah, with the eggs or anything. – Okay. – If you like a bit of hot sauce.
– Thank you very much! – Enjoy! -Thank you! Yo, fantastic. Look
at this place! The beautiful valley. That’s the road, behind the sign, the road we’re gonna take
this way a little bit later on, when it’s gonna be warmer. Look at this beautiful… The tree.
The beautiful padstal behind. The friendly people. Paradise
on Earth. And the delicious breakfast. Oh, yes. Oh, yes. And that’s a proper sunny side up.
The yellow is still liquid. It’s not common to manage
to get this in South Africa. Oh, yeah. Good, cheesy sausage. Bacon. Let’s go full bacon power. And in order not to spill it… Oh, come on. Oh, no, no, no! No! That’s an awesome breakfast
that is gonna get me ready for, for today’s ride. Oh, yeah. Look at this beautiful padstal. Do you have a pen or…?
– Yes, yeah! – Hopla. – Hi! – Hi! Thank you very much! And… I’m gonna go
have a look at the pecan tree. – And then you’ll come back.
– And then I’ll come back and get ready. – Okay, yeah. – Slowly, slowly.
– It is… [Speaks Afrikaans] – So that’s the route, the road
we came down yesterday. A beautiful willow. Willow.
I remember. And let’s go! We were recommended the other day… So here is the generator
that is charging my batteries now. A lovely bathtub. Yeah,
the other day, we were… Yesterday, I was recommended,
in Plett, a big pecan tree here. Apparently, it’s not… It’s not public, as the people told me, it belongs to the farm here,
to the farm of the padstal, but… I still wanna go have a look at the big
pecan tree. – Aiden, wait for me! – You know where the pecan tree is. – Yes. – Yes. – I was there a lot
of times, but I don’t… – Huh? – He and I are scared to go there alone
because there’s a guy approaching there… – Oh, really? – …and his grave is there.
– And he what? – His grave is there. – Oh, his grave. – Yeah. – Oh,
so you’re afraid of his grave. – We think there… – Ghost.
– You think maybe there is a ghost. Okay. So because I’m going, you can go.
Okay. I’m very strong against ghosts. – Last time we went, we ran
so fast that we both fell. – Oh, really? Cuz you heard
some noises. – Yeah. – And then you got scared. – And these aren’t lions
right here, just leopards. – Oh, there are leopards. – Yeah, but I think it was
just our neighbor’s dogs. But I think they got them.
– Ah, okay. But then… – But they can kill somebody
if they want. – The leopards? They can kill somebody. – Yeah,
the leopards can kill somebody. And our neighbor’s dogs. – Ah, the dogs also. Yeah. – Yeah,
so we are scared of both of them. Look at the guinea fowls.
I think that’s a guinea fowl. – Huh? – The guinea fowls are there.
– The guinea? – Guinea fowls. – Guinea fowls. What’s that?
– It’s a… It looks like a chicken. But it’s just different and pretty. – So what do you do on this farm?
– We really just play. – You just play. – Yeah. – So it’s a farm for playing. – For us. – Great. – We usually…
When there’s a baby. Oh, a baby. Yeah. – Oh, okay. That’s how you go.
– We need to open the gate. – Yeah. – It’s okay. I can… – No, we can open…
– No? – …the gate for you. – Okay. – Easy. – Oh, that’s the tree, no? – Yeah.
– Yeah, right there. That’s… – Thank you! – And it’s pretty much the one
to… – Yeah. – It’s gonna be open. – Maybe we’re gonna meet the ghost,
and then we’re gonna run away. – Yeah. – One time, I was running here. The guinea fowls are right
there. – The guinea fowls. – Yeah, you can see them. – Oh,
that’s what… How do you call them? Guinea fowls? – Yeah, there.
– We call them “pintades” in French. And so the babies die during the winter. – Yeah, so they… Usually… Hey,
don’t go there. There’s a baboon. There’s a baboon. – There’s a baboon?
– Yeah, here died a baboon, right here. – Oh, a baboon died here. – [Both] Yeah. – Have that one. – Oh, wow. – If you look
at the ground, there’s… – Oh, that’s… Okay. Yeah, that’s what I was told.
I was told there are a lot of… – And I’ll walk there. – A lot of nuts.
– Don’t walk there, please. – Ah, okay. Because this is the… – The baboon’s
grave. – Baboon’s grave? Okay. – Yeah. Do you wanna see the ghost
and the grave? – Yes. Yes. I wanna see the ghost. – Okay. So… – So in the end, we went
looking for a pecan… So this is the beautiful tree. We went looking for the pecan tree. And we’re gonna end up
going to see a ghost. – I’m actually next to the grave
there. – Oh, the grave is here. – Here it is. – Oh my god! So
you only come with the adults. – [Both] Yeah. – I’m just scared
alone. – Oh, that’s the… – Oh, that’s the grave.
– Hey, don’t stand there! – You stand on the grave.
That’s funny. It’s a tree. What is written? Minnie Zaayman
or maybe… I don’t know. – I think Zaay something. Wait, is this the place
we went down one day? Yeah. – So that’s a lovely river,
I guess. – Wow! – Open. – Can you help me? – Yes, I found one.
It’s okay. Mission accomplished. – Aiden, you need to search
for them, also. – For more? – Aiden! Yeah, this one. – Is this a pecan? – And I found two. – Thank you for…
– Ah, you need to open it right here. – And I found two in the baboon’s skull.
I… – Yeah, I know. We put it there. You found one! – Thank you very much! – And if you take a stone and break it,
you’ll find pecan nuts inside. – Then I can eat it. Okay. – Yeah. Aiden! Okay… Thank you
for helping me in the mission. – Okay. – There’s a baboon? – Yeah.
Well, there are baboons. Yeah. They use this to catch the baboons
and paint them white if they run away. Because they keep taking our food,
which was bad for… – Ah, really? But that’s for the baboons? – Yeah. – Oh, so when you catch them,
you can jail them. – Yeah. So when they’re in there,
they’re in jail basically. And you throw paint on them,
and then they’re white. And then, when they go out
into their family, their family keeps running
away from them. – Oh, really? – But when they go
into the river, the paint goes off. – So they need to go into the river
to get rid of the paint. – Yeah. Otherwise, their family
doesn’t want them anymore. So the baboons don’t like
the white baboons. – Yeah. When the baboon finally goes
into the river, it turns black again. – Okay. – The paint
goes off. – That’s funny. It’s the ghost running after you. I’m leaving. – Are you on your way? – Yes. – Good luck! – Thank you
very much! Yeah. – It’s a pleasure. Have fun! – Thank you
for your beautiful place, also! – Yeah, it’s gonna be cold
for the first 4 km. – Ah, it’s gonna be in the shade.
– It’s gonna be in the shade, and it’s… – Okay. – …right next to the river. – Okay. – After that…
– After that, I’ll be in the sun and… – After that, you’ll be in the sun.
– Okay. – And you’ll start climbing. – Okay. – Yeah. – Nice. – Have fun!
– Thank you very much! Yeah. – Thank you! – Good luck
to you! Bye-bye! – Thank you! Bye-bye! – Bye-bye. Look at this place.
So that was my small house. This place was very, very fair. Let’s go, guys! Hopla. Look at this beautiful, small house! So yeah, the place was very fair
because you pay per person. So today is a short day.
Just 30 km to Uniondale. But there is a big climb on the way,
800 m to climb, to start the day. And then it’s gonna be just downhill.
Let’s go, guys! Let’s go to Uniondale! So this is the famous
Prince Alfred’s Pass. It’s beautiful. Hello! – Fantastic what you’re doing.
– Thank you! – Where are you from? – France. – Man, I admire you. Fantastic.
– Thank you. – It’s a beautiful pass. – It’s a beautiful place. Yeah, it’s
awesome here. – Man, well done! – It’s really awesome. Thank you
very much! – Fantastic. – Yeah. – You also have the best
news channel on Earth. – The best what?
– News channel on Earth. – Used tunnel? – You,
your country. France 24. – Which one? – France 24. – Ah, the… Yeah, the international channel,
the international French channel. – It’s the best news channel
on Earth. – I guess it’s quite… – It’s… – Probably quite… Not so much biased. I don’t… – It’s the best news channel
on Earth. – Glad you like it. Yeah. Look at this place. Look at this! And there is a house
in the middle of nowhere. Wow! Luipaardspoort. Oh, wow! You can rent,
I guess, those small chalets. Oh, man! This is a proper place for tourism. What a road! That’s
what you call a scenic road. An old abandoned house. That’s
actually a cottage, Cloud Cottage. That’s a whole field of Proteas,
the national flower of South Africa. Okay, I guess that’s
a nice spot for my lunch break. Some “Protees”, Proteas, “Protees”.
I don’t know how you call it. And a beautiful landscape.
Beautiful scenery. Let’s start with a nice tomato with salt. A bit of Parmigiano. The Parmigiano, always
on the road, is so fantastic. Salami sticks. What a beautiful day in a beautiful place! And one of my favorites here
in South Africa: the cracker breads. They’re really good. And you can actually see
the cottage down there, the cottage we passed by
before, Cloud Cottage. What a view they must have
from there! Look at this place. That’s a nice spot for my lunch. After a good roadside meal,
it’s time to resume. So 5 km left in the climb. And we are 20 km
from Uniondale. Let’s go, guys! I’m not sure, but I think
we can have the last glimpse at the Indian Ocean, actually. I guess, up there
is the summit of the pass. And yes, we can
definitely see the Indian Ocean. Hello! – Hello, man! How are you?
– Good. How are you? – I’m okay. Thank you very much! – You’re welcome.
– I know you come from very far away. – Yes, from France. Huh?
– I know you’re coming from Knysna. – Yeah, I came from Plett. Yeah.
– Oh, Plettenberg Bay. – Yeah. – Oh, it’s very nice. – Beautiful road!
– It’s beautiful. I’m staying at this farm. – Oh, you stay at that farm there.
– Yes. – There’s the Cloud Cottage. – Yes, Cloud Cottage. – Ah,
okay. It’s beautiful there. Yeah. – Very beautiful. – Awesome.
– Yes. Thank you very much! – Have a good day! Yeah.
– Enjoy your day! – Yes, you too. – Thank you very much! – Bye-bye! Yeah, I am at the very end
of the battery. Ah, yeah. Here we are at what
I think is the summit of the pass. Bye-bye to the Indian Ocean! Ay, my legs. So the next time we’ll see the Indian Ocean
should be in Mozambique. Oh, putain! And I can see trucks. I’m gonna be,
soon, back on the asphalt! We’re done with Prince Alfred’s Pass. And here we arrive… We are back
in the little Karoo, I think. The little Karoo is a bit narrower here. – Hello, man! – Hello! – Hello! – How are you?
– I’m fine. And you? – Good, good, good. And here I’m back in the beautiful,
remote South Africa. – Hello! – Hello! Uniondale to the right. And left for the last 10 km to Uniondale. What a gorgeous, gorgeous,
gorgeous ride today! Ha-ha, look at that! Hello! – Hello! – A lovely, small cemetery. “Welkom in Uniondale.” It should be my last stopover
in the Western Cape. Hello! Hello! Hello! And we are on the N9. Okay, now let’s go…
I have nothing booked. So let’s go for a small
hotel, accommodation hunt here in Uniondale. Look at the beautiful church
hidden behind there. Oh, that’s the guest house.
– Hi! – Hello! – Hi! – Do I go…? Do I try to go to this one? A funny house here, Happy Hookers. Let’s do a U-turn.
Let’s try the first guest house. What a lovely little town!
We’ve got some doggies. Very quiet doggies.
Okay, first guest house. It seems it’s unsuccessful.
Nobody replies to the bell. Let’s try another one
further down the road. Hello! Here I see another one. Hello! How are you? – Fine. And you, sir?
– Good, good. This is a guest house, no? – Yes, yes, the guest house. – Do you
have rooms available? – Yes. – Yes? – Come, my friend. I will open – Okay. Hello! – Hello. – Hello! Sorry. – That’s fine. – Do you have rooms?
– Yes, I do have available… – I would… But it would be for several nights. – Yeah, that’s fine. – Yeah. – I’m open
until Monday. – Until Monday? Okay. – Yeah, Monday to… I’m actually
getting people in on Wednesday. – Okay, because I was… It would be
until Tuesday or Wednesday. Something like that. – Okay. – Yeah.
– It’s fine. Are you on your own? – Yeah, I’m on my own. Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
– Oh, sho. What are you doing next…? Riding around. – Yeah, riding a tricycle.
Electric tricycle, yeah. – Oh, okay. That helps. – It’s assisted. Yeah, yeah.
– Yeah. – It’s less hard than… – Yeah. – Than it looks. Yeah. – No, that’s fine. Do you want a single bed or a double bed?
Do you wanna have a look at the rooms? – Yes, yes. If I can have
a double bed, it’s better. I prefer it. – Okay, then it’s this side. – Okay. – And then the bike, we can
maybe just help you bring it up. Or you’ll have to bring it
through the house every time. – I mean, if I stay here, it won’t move. If I bring it inside, then…
– What are you gonna do then? – Huh? – What are you
gonna do for the rest of the…? – I have some editing to do,
some work… – Oh, okay. – …some online work to do.
– You do wanna look at the rooms first? – Yes, let’s have a look
at the rooms first. Yeah. – Yeah. Because a single room is actually
more spacious. – Ah, okay. So, yeah. So then maybe. – Yeah. If you’re
gonna… Yeah. – Maybe, yeah. And how much are the rooms? – It’s normally 850 for two people,
but I can give it to you… – Okay. – …cause you’re gonna stay
such a long time for 600. – Yeah. – Okay, great. – Just don’t touch
my dogsie. – Okay. – He won’t bite you. But he just doesn’t like to be touched.
– Oh, he doesn’t like to be touched. Okay. – Yeah. Come through! – Okay. – This is the one with the double
room or the double bed. Each of the rooms has got
their own entrance. So you can’t come… – Ah,
okay. – …through the house. – You’ve got your own entrance there. – Oh, you’ve got the entrance
on the streets. – Yeah. – Awesome. – Yeah. – Oh, very nice. – And there’s
a little kitchenette in each one. There’s a… – Ah, okay. – There are
a microwave and a fridge and a kettle. – Okay. Okay. There is what in the fridge? – The microwave and the fridge
and the kettle. – Oh, the microwave. Oh, okay, okay. – Yeah, yeah. And then the other one
is on the other side of the house. We just lock the doors
if there are guests in the room. – Ah, okay. – And we… Yeah, yeah,
yeah. – So this is your place then. – Yeah. – Okay. – We stay in the middle. – Okay. – And this is the other room
that… – Okay. – That’s got more space. So, it’s entirely up to you.
And it’s also got its own kitchen. – Oh, so there is the kitchen. – Yeah. – Oh, okay. – And this one you enter
from this side. – Oh, I can enter from… Oh, so we don’t have to always go
through your… – No, no, no. – Through the center. – Yeah. – Okay. Oh, okay. – And there’s a little kitchen
and then your bathroom on that side. – It looks nice, also. They’re both available
until at least Tuesday or…? – Yeah, on Wednesday,
I’m getting in guests again. – Okay. – Two nights, next week,
Wednesday. – Okay. – Yeah. – Okay. Actually, maybe you’re right. This one is maybe a bit more
convenient. Yeah. – Confusion. – Yeah, it’s more…
I’ll take this one. – All right. – Okay, let’s go. – Hello! Yes. – Can I help you? – You want to…
Okay, you can take it there. Up. I think it’s okay.
It is… Yeah. Thank you. – How did you get this on the plane? Or did you drive all the way
from France? – I drove from France. – How long have you been on the road?
– For almost four years now. – Oh my word! – To put it sideways. Yeah. Hopla. It’s okay. – Oh,
great. – You can turn it. You can turn it back.
Yeah, it’s okay now. Up. Ah, you want to… And back.
In this one as well. Whoa. It’s gonna be a well…
– A good decision. – Yes. It’s okay. You can drop it. I’ll…
Hopla. Perfect! Thank you very much! – The key for the gate
is over there. – Okay. – Hopla. The… Oh, this gate? So, guys,
here is the room I took in the end. That’s the kitchen. I’ve got a fridge. I’ve got a sink here, the table,
a place to stay, a place to sit. Here is the bathroom. Very nice.
Very clean, like always in South Africa. Here I am. Here is your friend.
And here is the shower. Clean as well. A little bit wet because I just used it.
And here is my room. You see, I put… My tricycle is stored inside,
which is absolutely awesome. Very safe. All my batteries are here.
My bags are here. And two beds. But what a lovely, small house! Small, traditional… Small, old,
traditional house here in Uniondale. To finish the video,
let’s go for a quick tour, a quick evening tour, of Uniondale. So it’s quite funny. The sunset’s
very early now. It’s quarter to five. And it looks almost like a ghost town
already. It’s really, really… There’s nobody in the streets. It doesn’t seem very dangerous.
No fences, no electric fences, nothing. It looks like a small,
tiny church. – Hi, hi! – Hello! So I just wanna go to have a look
at the big church we saw from the road. But I noticed, as a Frenchman, the French… I don’t know if they’re still,
but they used to be very good at city planning, you know,
the design of the cities: where the streets are,
the perspective, and all this. And you have a beautiful, big church. But there is no road leading directly
to it. So it’s hidden from the city. That’s poor urban planning, definitely. You should have a big road leading
to the big church. That’s how… Because the churches are big
and impressive and beautiful. I mean, in France, we have among
the most beautiful churches in the world, especially in northern France. But they’re supposed to be big
and amazingly beautiful to impress the people
to show the power of God. And here we are. Here
we have the power of God. But the urban planning cuts…
prevent the power from happening, cuz you can’t see it from the rest
of the city anyway. Beautiful all… Enough digression.
That’s a beautiful church. Really, really beautiful. Typical,
yeah, Dutch, German architecture. Always funny to see this architecture.
I said the same thing in Windhoek. But it’s always funny to see this kind
of architecture with palm trees next to it. It’s a cold Lutheran-Germanic architecture. It doesn’t match with the… It doesn’t go
well with the palm tree next door. Hi! – Hi! – Hi! Beautiful, old traditional house.
Jewish house. Interesting. Oh, I love Uniondale. I love… I’m so happy to be back,
to be away from the coast. I love the remoteness. The small, little towns always
have incredible value for money. People are friendly. Ah,
it’s the best part of South Africa. I guess the Karoo is gonna be awesome. And the beautiful flowers.
I see them close for the first time.

I ride from the small paradise of De Vlugt to Uniondale, through the Prince Alfred Pass, a beautiful gravel road.
Before starting my journey, I go to see a famous pecan tree I was recommended, but in spite of a pecan tree, I find a haunted place.
After that, I enjoy a beautiful day on a gravel road in South Africa, before arriving in beautiful Uniondale, back in the little Karoo.

  1. Wish we could have an idea of the places you mention by showing us your trail at the biggning or the end

  2. Kids living their best life no devices out on the farm with their imaginations running full blast, awesome. Those are aloe flowers, not sure exactly what type tho.

  3. Kino….I know you have travelled extensively in South Africa, but I haven’t watched all your videos. Have you visited Franschoek, just outside Cape Town? Some amazing restaurants there, and if you approach the town via Franschoek Pass, you will enjoy a breathtaking ride. Another beautiful ride is the coastal route from Gordon’s Bay to Hermanus.

  4. After watching you all the way from Sudan, It juat hit me how white South Africa is even upto the village level

  5. The paint and the baboons.
I cannot say how effective it is, but it's a thing we use to do and some perhaps still do in South Africa.
When one of the baboons returns and covered in all white paint, it scares the others.

It's also an effective way to keep them off the land.

However, baboons are clever, and think they will even get use to the one covered in paint.

Hope some fellow South African with more knowledge on this can share here.

  6. Kino, I think the SA tourism board should be paying you. You are doing their job for them. Well done on shining a light on beautiful South Africa. Following you from the UK 👍🏻

  7. When you finally go to Zimbabwe make sure you ask for Mutare/Nyanga area. It has the same views with where this video was shot. But dont climb Nyanga mountain. Ask first about its history. The stories gives me the creeps always. Im not Zimbabwean though. Just that thats the part that I love more about Zim

  8. Wow from Europe, through the Middle East and all the way through Africa to South Africa 🇿🇦. It is quite a way! Congratulations on making it all the way down. I am from South Africa but Johannesburg. Glad you are loving our country. Western Cape is very beautiful. ❤

  9. Another memorable episode. Your excitement to take it all in and openness to experience is inspiring. We once had breakfast at same place you stayed in the valley in the pass.

Our kids weren’t even 10 years old then, but we had them ride their bicycles for several kilometers on a long stretch of downhill. Lovely place and memories for them.

You took Plett to Uniondale. We took Uniondale to Knysna (there is a fork in the pass where the one goes to Knysna, the other to Plettenberg Bay. On the Knysna stretch you end up in the rain forest, so it was quite an experience, Karoo to rain forest in a few hours of driving.

  10. Hi from California Yves! The first Uniondale guest house you stopped at where nobody answered, was my paternal great grandfather’s home. My late father was born in that home. There was once a vibrant small Jewish community in Uniondale. Thanks so much for this video. Safe travels.

  11. The accents of the Afrikaans pre-teens are informed by American YouTube. They usually adopt a more British accent as they grow older since British YouTubers are more popular among South African teens. As a dad of a teen girl who used to speak with a weird American twang, she now speaks like a normal white South African girl with modern English PR.

  12. A mon avi………….this can easily pass as one of the Kino Yves best episodes! The kids' baboon and ghost stories got me rolling over with laughter! Hilarious!

  13. What a lovely trip you took us on this time, off the beaten track. Most of us will never see that route, as we normally stick to the tar roads. The kids were just delightful, and the setting, with the little house, the river, and the views. Your comment on the town layout in Uniondale was interesting, and I would imagine when that church was built, it may have been the main road, but over years of development, the layout may have changed. May towns in the WCape, have very large impressive NG Churches (Nederduitse Gereformeerde – Durch origin) and the farmers would come in from all over to go to church on a Sunday – it was the "centre" of town. You will still see it in may towns.

  14. Those beautiful innocent girls made me laugh. The scenery of the valleys ,mountains, rivers, meandrous roads is simply beautiful. Much ❤from Kenya 🇰🇪🇰🇪

  15. @kino If you order ‘Sunny Side Up’ and it’s overcooked, SEND IT BACK, my friend.

There is no excuse for anybody to overcook an egg.

That said … soft boiled eggs with buttered toast “fingers” come a close second … safe travels boet.

  16. I have alot of respect for people who eat runny eggs or sunny side up. I CAN'T!! I believe they can eat anything in this world.
