【絶望と絶景】標高1400m 濃霧で視界ゼロ。キャンピングカーで挑む「天空への道」|ここにしかない幻のチーズケーキ|全国制覇の旅 愛媛 No.1
Ehime Prefecture, No. 1 in the 29th prefecture of our nationwide tour . Morning of Day 8 in Ehime . Good morning. Unfortunately, it’s raining this morning. Outside, Papa and Panda are having a meeting to discuss the day. It’s raining here, but the forecast for Shikoku Karst is cloudy. Then, a sudden downpour started pouring down like a waterfall! The back window was soaked just getting in the car. Despite the weather, we set off for Shikoku Karst. The rain has eased a bit!? It just hit its peak. Before heading to Shikoku Karst, we plan to make a detour to a cheesecake shop called “Mominoki.” The cheesecake shop is 70km from here. The road to “Mominoki” will probably be quite difficult. I’m sure the road from Mominoki to Shikoku Karst will also be difficult . The temperature and humidity are indescribable, and the windows are fogged up. The first question is whether we can make it to Mominoki safely. We passed the hot spring we visited last night and drove a little further…and it cleared up! The road isn’t wet here, so maybe it’s not raining? Maybe it stopped raining in the morning? I hope the weather stays like this. From here, we head into a slightly rougher road. It’s a rough road!! The roads around here are really winding… Wow! Falling rocks?! Before the real rockfall , I played the safe card of having Ichimi with Panda behind him. Panda seems to love rough roads. Lol. It’s reassuring to know people you know before and after. I thought the road was normal compared to what I expected…but that wasn’t the case. From here on, the road gets narrower… It was raining on the rough road yesterday, so it was even harder to see. Wow, it’s amazing. The white lines are gradually disappearing. Maybe because of the bad weather, trees have fallen on the road. A pitch-black tunnel with no electricity. Ichimi is plodding along. Reassuring. The fog is gradually getting thicker. The road is paved, so it’s still okay for now. We’re not even close, and yet this fog… it’s getting thicker and thicker… it feels like the game “Silent Hill.” The road is wet, probably because of the fog, and there are fallen trees here and there… it was definitely a relatively safe route to Mominoki. Just before Mominoki, a difficult two-way traffic road appears. I wonder if there’s usually a lot of oncoming traffic on this road? We arrived safely at Mominoki. It seems to be a popular shop, as people were already lined up before opening. I greedily ordered the magical “cheesecake” with a melted inside and ice cream too. The ice cream was refreshing and delicious! Apparently the milk was delicious too. It was my first time trying this new type of cheesecake. It was so delicious! It was so light, I could have eaten it all in one go. I’m grateful to have been able to visit this shop if I hadn’t been with the pandas. I could have easily gotten in before opening, but it started to get crowded around this time. From here, we finally headed towards the Shikoku Karst. It’s cool, isn’t it? Apparently, the temperature in Shikoku Karst is 22°C. From here, we embark on a challenging road. It’s sure to be extremely difficult at the end… The view is amazing now, but it’ll be even more amazing if it’s clear. The fog is so thick we can’t even see below. There’s a cliff on the left. The road is getting tough… As expected, the road is narrow, so passing each other is difficult. There are still shelters here and there, so if you use them well, you’ll be fine. Amazing is the only word I can describe it. The fog is so thick we can’t see ahead, but it’s pretty tough. Cows, cows, cows! Cows!!! The road is getting a little bumpy too. The gutters on the narrow road are scary because they might fall in. It would have been difficult to go on this road by ourselves, so I’m glad Ichimi and Panda were with us. We can’t get Wi-Fi, so the navigation system has stopped. It feels like a road to the sky. The fog makes it almost magical in a way. Finally, a sign said Shikoku Karst. Apparently we’re now at an altitude of 1,120m! We came to a hairpin curve… If it were clear, the visibility would be good, but with the fog it’s hard to see ahead. Once we get past this curve, I feel like we’ve made it through. We’re almost at the karst campsite. Is this the campsite? It’s all white and incredibly crowded. I wonder what kind of parking lot Shikoku Karst Himezuruhira is like? The fog makes it hard to see. The parking lots around here are full, so we head to the one further ahead. My family gets excited when we see the grazing cows. Isn’t this the white rock surface unique to karst? It’s my first time seeing it. Isn’t this the highest of Japan’s three major karsts?! There were so many cows, I wondered if there were really that many. We couldn’t see, but at least on one side was a cliff. If we fell, it would be the end. The rock surface was amazing! On the other side, the fog was so thick we couldn’t see anything… The scenery was so thick we couldn’t see anything. We arrived at “Starry Village TENGU.” We made it here safely thanks to the two people in front of and behind us. If it had been just us, we would never have made it in these conditions. Apparently, if it had been sunny, the blue sky and greenery would have been beautiful… The Shikoku Karst was the highlight of our Shikoku trip… but the world was completely white. Lol. Compared to the morning downpour, it was much better that it wasn’t raining. It was lunchtime. Since it was Papa’s birthday, Panda decided to join Ichimi for a treat. Lol. Papa had Shimanto pork cutlet curry, and Mama and the others had steak bowls. After dinner, we drew lots! I wonder which one we’ll win! We got matching Moo Moo costumes as a memento of our trip. Outside, we found the border between Kochi and Ehime prefectures! Apparently, you can get a good view of the mountains. Apparently, you can even see the lights of fishing boats at night. We even found a Pokémon manhole! It’s clearing up! The sun is shining! We headed to the Tengu Plateau side for a change of scenery. Surprisingly, there’s a shelter to avoid oncoming traffic, so it’s not a problem. The fog is getting worse again… We arrived. Unfortunately, it’s foggy, but the view is still amazing! Seeing the cow up close, it was huge! Something’s coming! Run! I took a short stroll along the promenade. It seems like the area wasn’t as well-maintained when Panda-san visited before. White karst limestone can be seen against the green grasslands. I’ve been busy traveling between Ehime and Kochi. Haha, thank you for letting me join you on the Shikoku Karst! I never thought we’d meet by chance on our trip to Shikoku, so I was happy! Panda-san and I are heading to Kochi, while my family is heading towards Dogo in Ehime. Let’s be careful! I’m glad the fog cleared a little at the last moment. The scenery is completely different from before. Apparently, the safest road to get to Shikoku Karst is the one we’re heading back on. Even so, there are a couple of narrow paths. There’s a narrow road on the karst side, but once you get past that, the road should be wide. I think this is the safest route for those visiting Shikoku Karst. Some parts around here are narrow, but it’s much better than the road we took on the way there. Be careful, because on long downhill stretches, the camper’s brakes will heat up and become ineffective! This is the end of the narrow road. By using the engine brake properly, you can prevent engine fade. I’m currently applying the engine brake. I think the road will continue like this from here on. Panda, who loves rough roads, praised me, saying, “You really do choose the safe route, Dad.” lol Even in this weather, I’m glad I made it to Shikoku Karst. I tried to find videos to see which route is best to take to Shikoku Karst, but I couldn’t find anyone filming the best route in a camper. There’s a fork in the road ahead, but the road to Ehime looks narrow, so we decided not to go. It’s a bit of a detour, but I keep going straight. There’s a fork here! The right leads to Ehime, the left to Kochi. The road has been like this for a while, 6km left. 1.6km left to the main road! It was a safe bet all along. The road was good, but the problem was the downhill! My brakes still worked, but it felt a little weaker. The long, gentle downhill slope was pretty tough! Finally, I reached the finish line! I recommend this road for campers! When climbing from here, there’s a gate at the entrance with a sign that says “Tengu Plateau Entrance.” I think it’s best to approach from this “Tengu Plateau Entrance.” All right, let’s go! This is where I say goodbye to Panda-san and Ichimi-san. Thank you for today! See you again somewhere! It was good to see you after so long, and I never thought we’d bump into each other on this trip. I’m so glad I finally got to visit the Shikoku Karst, which I’d wanted to do. If it had been just my family, I wouldn’t have been able to go to “Mominoki” (Moon Tree). After this, I decided to head to the roadside station up ahead. I arrived at Roadside Station Yusuhara. There was a hot spring below, so I took a bath to cool my brakes! After returning from the hot spring, I set off! My brakes cooled down while I was in the hot spring, and the hot spring was also nice. Tomorrow I’m planning to go to Dogo Onsen, so I’ll sleep in the car on that side. If Dogo Onsen is too crowded and I can’t get in, I might skip it. I can’t predict the flow of people, so I’ll move on a case-by-case basis. There’s a sunken bridge here too! A beautiful view of the town unfolds. It’s also quite a downhill slope… I’m glad I cooled my brakes earlier. Narrow roads pop up frequently. I can’t feel safe. I wonder what that building is at the bottom. It’s in an unusual location, so I’m surprised . I arrived at my destination for the day. Today, I’m not using a power site, so I’m conserving power using a portable power source and sub-battery. The sub-battery is at 99% so it looks fine for now. My meat froze solid when I put it in the back of the fridge. Today, I’m cooking rice in my cute little rice cooker. I set up 1.5 cups of rice. I’m entrusting the rice cooker to the AORA 30 again today. For dinner, I’m making Kubokawa beef roast beef. Since I’m grilling the meat, I’ll be ventilating the room thoroughly. This time, I’ll cook it a little longer and keep it warm longer. I’m using kamaboko (fish cake) to make some creative snacks with what I have on hand. I’ll cut a large cucumber into bite-sized pieces. I’ll also add tomatoes. I’ll add fresh wasabi. I’ll add mayonnaise, soy sauce, and bonito flakes to season it . I wonder how the roast beef will turn out after being kept warm. It looks like it’s turned out great! While the rice is steaming, I’m going to grill some sweet orange peppers. U-chan is in charge of cooking the rice. She’s doing her best to serve it. Let’s eat! This trip is non-alcoholic. Mama’s homemade snacks, salt-grilled sweet orange peppers I bought at a roadside station, and roast beef. Today is a hearty Shikoku feast! It’s spicy! The roast beef was a big hit! U-chan also ate quickly. This week’s comment theme is, “What’s your favorite hot spring? Where’s the one you’d like to visit?” Mama likes Kusatsu Onsen because of its atmosphere! Speaking of atmosphere, Ginzan Onsen is also great! It was really nice when we went there in winter. I wonder if Yufuin is also a hot spring town? Yufuin was also really good. Papa has fond memories of Ginzan Onsen, but in terms of atmosphere, I’d say Yufuin. U-chan liked the hot spring we went to on our last day in Hokkaido because it was warm! It’s not in a hot spring town, but U-chan is talking about Furano’s Manka no Yu cave hot spring! I’d love to hear about other hot springs you liked besides hot spring towns! Please let me know in the comments! Thank you! Saving water while washing dishes after meals. This rice cooker is small, but the parts are removable, making it easy to clean! I’m going to bed now, even though it’s only 10 o’clock. With the arrival of our new friend Moo Moo, we have more travel companions. lol What should I do about powering it up at night ? There’s still 81% of the sub-battery left. For now, I’m quickly lowering the air conditioning temperature inside the car before going to bed to cool it down. After that, I’m wondering whether to use the sub-battery or a portable power source. Maybe I’ll use a portable power source when I go to sleep. The AORA 30 is just the right size and easy to use. The circulator is blowing air towards the rear bed. The rear bed tends to get hot around the feet because there’s no airflow. Before going to sleep, I switch the air conditioner to power on the portable power source. When I go to sleep, 24°C and fan speed 1 are the best settings for my home. Good night!
