花の美しい村、サン コーム ドルト、フランスの最も美しい村のひとつ / フランス南西部 / バラ / 中世の街並み / 2025年春の旅1 / Saint-Côme-d’Olt, France

Hello everyone! This is Sayaka from quatre saisons. Starting with this video, I’ll be gradually sharing our record of the six-day trip my husband Matthieu and I took through south-western France in May! We’re now heading to a village selected as one of France’s Most Beautiful Villages. Thunder rumbled the night before, and rain was forecast for today, but it’s sunny for now. The destination we’re heading to is also forecast for rain, but let’s hope it stays clear! We’re heading to the service station now. ※If you’d like to watch the village video straight away, please select “Arrival at the Village” from the chapter (table of contents) and click. We’ll enjoy the bread we bought the previous day from our favourite boulangerie at the service station. As we still have over two and a half hours of driving ahead, I’ll also share the scenery along the way until we reach the village. We crossed this bridge during last year’s trip too. It’s gradually clouding over, and sure enough, the rain has started. We’re passing the viaduct in the town of Millau, which I’ve featured in past videos. (Do watch my video of Millau too! ) It’s a shame we don’t have time to stop, even though there are lovely towns and villages along the way. We met some cows too! The cows looked over at us, and we were absolutely delighted. And finally, we’ve arrived at our destination this time: Saint-Côme-d’Olt. It took about four hours from home to reach the village. Now we’re having lunch. Our lunch has arrived! Matthieu ordered a hamburger. Inside was Cantal cheese, produced in this nearby region. I had a few of Matthieu’s chips (these were also absolutely delicious!) It looks delicious. I had a bite too – it was a really tasty burger! It’s lovely that they use local ingredients! I ordered a pizza from the Aveyron region, where this village is located. It had a tomato and parsley sauce, mozzarella, Emmental and Cabecou cheese, sausage and lardons. Let’s eat! It wasn’t overly oily, the cheese wasn’t pungent, and it was absolutely delicious! We’ve just had lunch. It was very tasty! Saint-Côme-d’Olt, where we’re visiting this time, has been selected as one of France’s Most Beautiful Villages. This village is also famous as one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. The tourist information office seems to be inside the town hall, so we’ll head there first! We pass through this Théron Gate to enter the village. This gate is one of three remaining castle gates in the village. The village visible from here felt larger than I had imagined. The bells are ringing to mark 14:00. It sounds like the school bell signalling the start of lessons. The church is absolutely lovely. And this house next door is lovely too. The tourist information centre appears to be in the same building as the town hall, but I wonder if it’s open. The entrance to the town hall was very beautiful. Is the mark next to the characters for “City Hall” (Marie) a seashell? The tourist information centre was right by the entrance. The building currently used as the town hall is a castle built in the 12th century by the Count of Carmaux. After changing hands numerous times and being used as a boarding school, it was sold to the local authority in 1970, which established the town hall there. The church façade is truly magnificent too. Built in the 16th century by the architect Salvanh, who also designed the bell tower of Rodez Cathedral, this church features a distinctive bell tower. (I’ll introduce it at the end of the church section.) It is a Gothic church, though parts are said to be Romanesque. The first parish church (now the Penitents’ Chapel), located outside the walls in the 11th century, welcomed pilgrims. As it also functioned as a small “infirmary” to accommodate pilgrims, the church was placed under the protection of Saints Côme and Damien, the patron saints of nurses. By the early 16th century, the church had become too small, leading to the decision to expand the castle chapel and build a new church. Since then, the village has been named after its two patron Saint Côme and Damien, and has retained that name. A distinctive feature of this church is the twisted roof section of its bell tower. After visiting the church, we stroll through the village. It’s a lovely village. The building with the tower at the front is the residence of the Pont de Caillou family, who were involved in the town’s defence; this tower also served as a watchtower. A lovely street. This gate is one of three remaining castle gates (entrances to the fortified town) in the village. Maison Dufau was once the residence of a family of notaries. It has a four-sided pointed roof with a dovecote on top. There are so many birds. Are the young ones practicing flying? This bird is probably a Hirondelle, a swallow species. I hear they eat annoying insects! The Rue du Terral we’re walking along was once a shopping street for travellers from southern France and Spain. Buildings that were once stone-built market stalls still remain. This house feels very steeped in history. I wonder what the interior is like. It seems rather cold in winter. The house next door is very modern. Old houses are lovely, but it must be difficult to restore them when converting to a contemporary style. This time in the village, I found many beautiful roses and other flowers, so I’ll be introducing quite a few. This is a bridge over the Lot River, with its 16th-century piers still remaining. (The village’s name “Olt” is Occitan for “Lot”.) Rain has started to fall. Occitanie has many rivers, and I imagine them all to be beautiful. (Though there are days when they aren’t so lovely, like after rain.) It must feel wonderful to wade barefoot in the river during summer! The rain has become a little bit heavy. Walking through the village, we see pilgrims carrying large packs. I wonder if we’ll see any cats today with this weather… Once we moved away from the river, the rain stopped. You can tell this village was once extremely prosperous just from the appearance of the old buildings. There were many reasons for its prosperity: the fertile, warm climate of the Lot valley, ancient roads, and its role as a bridge connecting the Causse region and the Aubrac plateau. Wealthy landowners and merchants from Aubrac, local lords and clergy built winter residences here, which today form a splendid heritage. Some of the beautiful buildings constructed during the 15th and 16th centuries are said to be by the architect Mr. Salvanh, who also designed the bell tower of Rodez Cathedral and the village church. There was a bakery on the left, but it wasn’t open that day. There was a cat! The cat seems slightly curious about us, but won’t come over. He looked like it might come, but then walked away. Matthieu tries to approach, but he scurries off. Seems tricky to get close to this cat. You just had to show yourself like that, right in the middle of the path! Of course we want to pet you! What a nimble little cat. Looks quite young. The cat is very wary of us. It seems the cat disliked the shutter sound. Port Neuf is one of three remaining city gates in the village, and the newest of them. On this side was a “gîte”, a lodging similar to an Airbnb, not a guesthouse. I’m sure many pilgrims stay here. This was a car park! Quite a few cars pass through this narrow street. This is the back of the town hall we visited first. Renovating old buildings looks like hard work. What a lovely spot! I’d love to have breakfast here. This house is one of the designs you often see in the Occitanie region. You can often see them in other towns and villages near this one. This window area looks quite aged as well. We’ve just completed a loop around the village. We’ve returned to the town hall building. This also appears to be accommodation for pilgrims. There are numerous scallop shell symbols. Fortunately, the clouds have cleared, revealing patches of blue sky. A very charming house. This is another lovely house! This time, we visited Saint-Côme-d’Olt. Many visitors to this village are pilgrims. At this time of day, it seems few people linger long in the village; everyone rests a little before heading to their next destination. Today is the first day of our six-day journey, and we’re now heading to the town where our hotel for the night is located. Our travel videos will continue in future episodes. We’ll be introducing lovely villages and towns, so we’d be delighted if you’d look forward to them! Thank you for watching this video to the end. See you in the next one!
