I stayed at Iwaiya, a traditional Japanese inn in Iwai Onsen, Iwami Town, Tottori Prefecture.

As the folk art movement advocated by Soetsu Yanagi, father of the renowned industrial designer Sori Yanagi, gained momentum nationwide, a new folk art movement originating in Tottori was born, led by Shoya Yoshida.

The folk art movement sought to find beauty in everyday utensils. Yoshida’s movement, which guided this movement and translated it into concrete works, also spread nationwide, and Tottori is said to have become famous for folk art.

Iwaiya, the inn I stayed at this time, is a place where you can enjoy folk art in Tottori. Folk art is casually placed throughout the lobby and guest room furnishings, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in this world. It will be an irresistible space for lovers of Japanese pottery and furniture.

In addition to folk art, the highlight of this inn is the exquisite hot springs. Iwaiya is a central presence in Iwai Onsen, said to be the oldest hot spring in San’in region. It’s also a representative inn, a member of the Japan Society for Preserving Secret Hot Springs. The baths include the Gensen Choju no Yu, a hot spring with a foot-level bathtub, as well as a hot spring area where the abundant spring water flows freely.

The bathhouse’s comfortable atmosphere is a blend of modern and folk art. The high ceilings create a calming atmosphere, allowing you to relax to your heart’s content. The deep bathtub in some areas offers a unique sensation, making it a favorite spot for me as a fan of standing baths.

Although it’s a hidden hot spring, the cuisine is also top-notch. The beautiful dishes served on folk art tableware are proof that this inn still maintains its reputation as one of the best in San’in.

During my visit to Tottori, I also visited Goen, a renowned restaurant recently taken over by a friend who previously hosted me. It’s a famous restaurant representing Tottori’s B-grade gourmet cuisine, and I highly recommend it for everyone to try. Consider a trip to Tottori to experience folk art, exquisite hot springs, beautiful cuisine, and tasting horumon soba noodles.
