I Ate Obihiro’s Most Famous Pork Bowl (Butadon) …and Lost Money on a Horse

good morning from Sapporo Station today we are heading to Obihiro look at this tiny police station next to a small hotel… we will be staying at the larger hotel next door not bad alright, let’s get some lunch you can choose between lean, fatty or mixed pork slices the staff were hilariously enthusiastic the legendary butadon pickles and miso soup the grilled pork aroma is mouth-watering mixed fatty and lean slices charcoal grilled fatty pork belly of course it is insanely delicious coated in a light sweet soy sauce, it pairs perfectly with rice even the rice alone is magical let’s try a lean piece same perfect smokey, sweet and savoury flavour very tender as well radish pickles the light miso soup contrasts the flavourful pork well just look at this… could this get better? let’s try out the condiments first, tare sauce additional sweet soy flavour and saucey-ness chili powder the floral spice works against the pleasant sweet soy flavour sichuan pepper same problem but worse i have ruined a perfect piece of pork coarse black pepper this is the way the black pepper flavour works perfectly with the sweet and savoury tare sauce perfection what if we try all 3 peppers together… we’ll stick to black pepper for the rest lol an outrageously satisfying meal 100% most enthusiastic staff an incredible butadon now for Obihiro’s #1 attraction it appears there are no races today… saturday and sunday only i will return tomorrow see you for dinner a long established ramen restaurant i must look like a tourist always have to try the #1… red miso tonkotsu ramen a savoury and rich creamy broth charred oil adds a smokey taste crispy bamboo the red miso paste is full of ground meat medium thick yellow wavy noodles fatty slice of pork belly maximum tender and rich so tender… there are so many different ingredients in this bowl the beansprouts add a fresh crunch little bit of chili tiny bit of pepper and some grain vinegar? plain white vinegar much better the vinegar helps reduce the richness so many different textures and flavours very satisfying a delicious bowl of ramen and a great first day in Obihiro see you in the morning time to check out the hotel breakfast buffet some delicious looking sashimi and freshly grilled butadon!? not bad at all freshly grilled pork belly i have an idea… a sashimi and grilled pork rice bowl!? miso soup salad and lots of assorted dishes the quality of everything looked fantastic salmon tender with medium richness minced fatty tuna maximum rich and soft grilled fatty pork belly and wasabi caviar at breakfast is always a treat grilled mackerel tender, moist and flavourful burdock simmered beef all of the food was expertly prepared and seasoned is this too crazy…? rich, fatty, briny, sweet and savory – outstanding all of the sashimi was so fresh and tasty the roast beef was also excellent the quality at this buffet was unbelievable see you for lunch standard indian decor lots of options… i chose seafood curry maximum spicy obviously 3 different varieties of pickles let’s add some colour… the spicy aroma is intoxicating i chose the indian roux a very delicious spicy thick curry the taste is somewhere between Japanese and Indian curry definitely lots of spices the pickles counter-act the rich gravy the mild flavour of the seafood is completely masked
by the extreme spice i always seem to make that mistake but i can’t say no to spicy food or seafood… although the spices give it an indian flavour, the overall taste is mild the rich gravy pairs perfectly with white rice let’s try adding hot oil the curry spice level is so extreme, it adds no heat, only greasiness lol very delicious but i wish i tried the original lol a very unique experience Obihiro is also well known for desserts this shop is particularly famous for their daifukus why do people make these video shots… so awkward to come back and get your camera… oh well, let’s try the daifuku shine muscat very soft and chewy mochi, maximum sweet, crispy and juicy grape super oishi i was told these are extremely popular extremely soft mochi, sweet red bean and the juiciest
and most flavourful strawberry the best daifuku i’ve ever eaten by far also the messiest, oops the races should be starting soon… let’s hope i understood my lesson… multiple people have told me gambling is illegal in japan you are all liars …well …this is different…lol our trial run was unsuccessful how hard could it be to win… i think this is the seniors race lmao i’ve gotten the hang of it, i am going to be so rich my last life, one big ticket… the other horses finished eons ago… how will i explain to my wife this ice cream cost $100 wait, i don’t have a wife, i’ll see you guys soon an incredibly fun experience ice cream kinda expensive though dinner time kita no yatai a village of food stalls to a hard day’s work my food budget is depleted cucumbers and octopus… covered in a sweet and spicy miso sauce very tender, very delicious if only that ice cream wasn’t so expensive… freshly grilled saffron cod moist dense flesh very similar texture to cod in Canada lots of smokey flavour from the grill cheap and simple but still extremely delicious a nice light dinner see you tomorrow last day in Obihiro a nice light breakfast lots of sashimi and grilled pork how can you go wrong with freshly grilled sweet soy pork so delicious siu mai soft and meaty roast beef …also soft and meaty this breakfast buffet was so delicious the sashimi and grilled pork were definitely the highlights all of the sashimi was fantastic for sure one of the best breakfast buffets i’ve been to everything was prepared with such care and skill even the fruit was cut so fancy let’s go to to the Obihiro Shrine established in 1910, it enshrines 3 deities of Hokkaido’s development and agriculture time for lunch Thai Chinese Restaurant Chouka such a detailed menu, wow chili shrimp the same flavour i tasted at Chen Kenichi’s restaurant in Nagoya a delicate balance of sweet, savoury and spicy with crisp vegetables hot and sour noodles (suan la mien) additional condiments a light hot and sour broth light but very flavourful topped with local cilantro fresh and fragrant beans? sweet soy flavour medium thick wavy noodles very chewy, they hold the broth well chili flakes red sichuan pepper green sichuan pepper white pepper vinegar now this is truly hot and sour… the noodles were so extremely fragrant and flavourful the roasted cashews and peanuts added texture and richness this was masterfully prepared food the chef made every dish one by one and you could tell how much
love and care went into each one i loved everything about this restaurant especially their hot and sour noodles unbelievably delicious food a perfect end to my food journey in Obihiro i hope you enjoyed this food video from Obihiro please like and subscribe if you did my food adventure from Japan will continue soon next time…

Video Highlights:
Join me as I dive into the must-try local specialties of Obihiro City, Hokkaido:

BUTADON BATTLE: I finally try the original Obihiro-style Butadon—thick slices of perfectly grilled Tokachi pork covered in a sweet and savory secret sauce over rice. It’s the ultimate Japanese comfort food and a local obsession!

HOKKAIDO CURRY: I visit the legendary Curry Shop Indian (Obihiro’s soul food!) to try the Japanese-style curry that locals have loved since 1968. You need to taste this unique regional specialty!

THAI-CHINESE (CHŪKA) DELIGHTS: For an unexpected dinner, I visited the local favorite Thai Chinese Restaurant Chouka. I had their popular chili shrimp (Ebi Chili) and their famous Coriander Hot and Sour Noodles (or Su La Mien).

WORLD’S RAREST HORSE RACE: Experience Banei Keiba (Banei Horse Racing) at the Obihiro Racecourse—the world’s only race where massive draft horses pull heavy sleds over giant dirt hills! I figure out how to bet on Banei Tokachi and try to win big.

JAPANESE DESSERT: The trip isn’t complete without a famous Obihiro sweet: a giant, fresh Daifuku (mochi sweet).

If you are planning a trip to Hokkaido, Japan, and want an authentic experience away from the busy cities of Sapporo and Tokyo, Obihiro is a must-visit. Let me know in the comments: Which of Obihiro’s three famous soul foods—Butadon, Indian Curry, or Domo Ramen—would you try first?
