11:38 p.m. This Friday-only train is bound for Taitung — the overnight express No. 452. Now arriving at the platform. This is Day 2 of our TR-PASS 3-day journey. Tonight, we’ll take a “one-day island loop” by rail. First stop — Brown Boulevard in Chishang, Taitung. One-Day Round Island Railway Tour | TR-PASS 3-Day Journey Taitung County, Chishang Township | Chishang Station Let’s rent a bike first. Wow, so many stars! Brown Boulevard was originally named Jinxin 3rd Road. It stretches about 2.2 kilometers long. It got its name after Mr. Brown Coffee filmed a commercial here. In 2013, an airline company invited Takeshi Kaneshiro to star in a commercial, also shot in this very spot. This made the place famous overnight. But its real charm comes from the scenery itself — a dreamlike countryside framed by mountains. It feels almost unreal, like a fairytale. Morning light paints the distant peaks, turning them fiery red. In this moment, it’s like seeing Hokusai’s Red Fuji in real life — so breathtaking, so alive. Taitung County, Chishang Township | Feng Cha Tree Taitung County, Chishang Township | Chishang Waterwheel Taitung County, Chishang Township | Paradise Road Taitung County, Chishang Township | Chishang Dapo Pond I think it’s best to take that night train here. Time for breakfast! My son and my colleague both said this tofu-skin breakfast is famous. So we had to try it.. Their tofu pudding is really good. Want a bite? Alright, next stop — Beinan Site Park. Beinan Site Park is just behind Taitung Station. About a 15-minute walk. It’s Taiwan’s first archaeological park. And the largest of its kind. It opens at 9:00 a.m., and it’s 8:53 a.m. now. This site was once the largest prehistoric settlement in Taiwan. It dates back about 3,500 years — the Neolithic Beinan culture. In 1980, construction of the new Taitung Station accidentally unearthed it. Professors Song Wen-xun and Lien Chao-mei from NTU Anthropology led the excavation. It lasted nine years, with 13 excavation phases, a rescue dig of historic scale. It became a milestone in Taiwan’s archaeology. Taitung City | Beinan Site Exhibition Hall Over 2,000 stone coffins were discovered here, many with human remains intact, and beautifully crafted burial items. They reveal insights into social structure, burial customs, and craftsmanship. It’s the largest stone coffin burial site in the entire Pacific Rim. Among the artifacts unearthed — stone tools for farming and hunting, pottery for daily use, and exquisite jade ornaments. Taitung City | Beinan Youth Assembly Center The prehistoric stone pillars in the park are the most iconic remains of the Beinan Site. The earliest record dates back to 1896 — when Torii Ryūzō photographed them. In 1927, Tadao Kano conducted multiple surveys, suggesting the stones were part of ancient dwellings. Their true purpose remains a mystery — inviting endless imagination. A mystery for future generations to uncover. Alright — let’s go. Time to enjoy Taiwan’s most beautiful coastline. Next stop — Victorystar in Pingtung Taitung County, Taimali Township | South-Link Railroad Victorystar in Pingtung is in downtown Pingtung — a cultural park themed around military dependents’ villages. Originally built in 1927 for Japanese Air Force officers. After the war, it was taken over as housing for ROC military families. More homes were built later, and the settlement Soon filled with the charm of military community life. This area is “Victory Zone,” and over there is “Chenggong Zone.” Two major sections. Years later, Pingtung County and the Ministry of Culture restored over 70 historic houses in both Victory and Chongren Villages. It became Taiwan’s largest and most complete military dependents’ cultural park. In 2018, it was officially renamed “Victory Star Village Creative Park.” Now a new landmark blending history, culture, and creativity. Let’s grab some lunch. Hi there, are you waiting for a table? And of course — ice cream after lunch. Beneath the Japanese-style roofs, The traces of military community life remain. The whole park radiates a nostalgic charm — a taste of the ROC vibe. We decided to skip Pier-2 today and spend the rest of our time here, wandering through Victory Star Village. Land, history, culture — different people, in different times, each living out their own stories. Together, they form the textures and memories that define Taiwan. And they make this island journey even richer. Kaohsiung City | Kaohsiung Station Our one-day island trip ends with a delicious beef hot pot in Kaohsiung. That’s a wrap! Bye-bye!
