勇闖緬北邊境!對面就是克欽獨立軍的地盤,現在仍在發生殘酷戰爭
. I came to the border between northern Myanmar and China. On the left is Myanmar’s Kachin State, and on the right is Tengchong in Yunnan, China. Today I will visit Houqiao Town and Houqiao Port on the China-Myanmar border . The minivan I took last year was running from Houqiao Town, Yunnan to Ganbaidi, Myanmar. This bus can take you directly from Yunnan to northern Myanmar. At the end of October 2024 , the Kachin Independence Army captured Banwa, the capital of Kachin State’s first special zone. On November 20, after the Kachin Independence Army captured Ganbaidi Port, all ports on the Myanmar side of the China-Myanmar border in Kachin State have been closed. The Kachin Independence Army controls the area. Due to frequent fighting, the governments on both sides strictly control the flow of people. As a result, this passenger transport route from the Chinese border to northern Myanmar could no longer continue. There were few vehicles on the road and it was even harder to see pedestrians. I was panicking. After all, ordinary people are filled with fear when they hear the word northern Myanmar. My trip to the northern Myanmar border was also filled with anxiety and tension. I set out from Tengchong City and took a rural minibus to Houqiao Town on the China-Myanmar border. The station had no sign and was relatively simple. The administrator saw me taking pictures from various angles and asked me nervously if I was here for inspection. I quickly answered that I was going to Houqiao Town to attend the market. The administrator was skeptical. Before the minibus was about to depart from the station, the administrator boarded the bus to supervise the passengers to fasten their seat belts . Looking closely and carefully, it seems that the elder sister still has doubts in her heart that I am here for a secret inspection. As the rural minibus drove out of the city, the pastoral scenery began to come into view. Tengchong’s summer is so cool that the wind outside the car window is just like the air vents blowing out of the air conditioner. This section of the minibus journey is from Tengchong City to Houqiao Town. I am not worried about this part of the journey because there are many people traveling with us , and Houqiao Town is 20 kilometers away from the China-Myanmar Port. The most unsettling part of the journey is the next step from Houqiao to the border port . The information I found online is that you need to take this kind of minibus to Ganbaidi, Myanmar. If a black-hearted driver takes you directly to northern Myanmar and sells you, the consequences are too serious to even think about. I have been to northern Thailand ten years ago, and the topography here is very similar. If the text is changed to Thai, there will be more on the road. Some pickup trucks can basically pretend to be in Southeast Asia. After more than an hour’s drive, we arrived at Houqiao Town by minibus. Today happened to be Houqiao Town’s market day, which only happens every five days. There were many more stalls on both sides of the town’s main road, and the flow of people was much greater than usual. Many store signs had earthworm-like Burmese characters, which added a mysterious atmosphere to this border town. It was almost time for lunch, so I chose to try Tengchong’s famous thin bean powder and Da Jiujia. Thin bean powder is made by soaking, grinding, and filtering peas to get a fine pea powder paste. It can be eaten with all kinds of strange seasonings, so the taste is also very novel. As for Da Jiujia , there is a story that in the early Qing Dynasty, Wu Sangui led the Qing army to Kunming. During the Ming Dynasty, Emperor Yongli When the emperor fled to Tengchong in western Yunnan and was starving, a farmer fried bait blocks, ham, eggs, and vegetables for him to eat. After eating it, the Yongli emperor praised it highly and said that the fried bait blocks saved him . From then on, Tengchong fried bait blocks were also known as “Da Jiujia “. The bait blocks were cut into diamond-shaped slices and mixed with fresh pork slices, ham slices, pickled cabbage, onions, spinach, tomatoes, pickled peppers, eggs, etc., and a small amount of broth was added to simmer until soft. The female boss in charge said, “Don’t underestimate me, she has worked in Tengchong restaurants for several years. ” She had already cut a lot of bait blocks and asked me if it was enough. If not, she wanted to give me another big piece. I quickly declined because the amount was much larger than my usual standard. After filling my stomach, I wandered around Houqiao Town because it was a trade port . Many trucks from China and Myanmar passed through the town, which is quite large. The stalls on both sides sold some products that are hard to find in big cities. Of course , there were also the popular milk tea and snack chains. Commerce is the most powerful penetrating force. It can easily penetrate the gaps between regions, ethnic groups and cultures, making people feel the scene of world peace. The public toilets in the town are hard to find. I happened to pass by the Houqiao Town Public Service Center during the lunch break. The door to the office area was locked, but the lobby was open, and the toilets were also open. During my trip to Yunnan, I found more than one sign on the door of a government department that the toilets were open to the public for free. I personally appreciate this behavior. I hope that the whole country will learn from Yunnan. Next, I will take a bus to the port. It’s hard to hail a ride-hailing car in a small town, but I’m always a little worried about those unconventional minivans . I wandered around the town twice, weighing the pros and cons. When the skinny and dark-skinned minivan driver approached me again, I took a picture of his license plate number with my phone and sent it to my “Love Family” WeChat group, which has more than 50 members , and then got in his car. The weather in Tengchong was cool, so I didn’t need to close the windows, which made me feel more secure. My plan was that if I found that the driver deviated from the navigation and took me to a remote place , or if there were other accomplices trying to control me, I would shout for help and escape through the car window. Although I also felt that in such a desolate mountain, it would be useless for the driver to shout at the top of his lungs. Brother Ji, a local Han Chinese, introduced me to the local situation. Before the war in northern Myanmar last year, he mainly ran the passenger route from Houqiao Town to Ganbaidi, Myanmar. At that time, the Sino-Myanmar border was in good order. Many Burmese people came to Yunnan to work and do business. Many Chinese bosses also went to Myanmar to grow bananas for trade. There was a lot of personnel exchanges and business was pretty good. Brother Ji had a border resident certificate, which made it very convenient for him to enter and exit Myanmar. After the war in Myanmar in the second half of last year, both sides began to strictly control the flow of people. Few people took the bus, so the route from Houqiao to Ganbaidi was discontinued. Now he can only do some odd jobs. I suggested that we visit the old bridge on the Stilwell Road on the way, and Brother Ji was very cooperative . Houqiao is the Stilwell Road leading to the Indochina Peninsula. This strategic point is the last stop on China’s way to Myitkyina. It was once an important transportation hub , carrying important functions such as material transportation and personnel exchanges. As an important part of the Stilwell Road, this old bridge witnessed the history of the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II. It was an important channel for the Chinese Expeditionary Force to enter Burma and fight against Japan. In 1943, the US military built a military Bailey bridge at this location. In 1945, the Stilwell Road Steel Frame Bridge was built. In 1963, the bridge was converted into a concrete steel cable suspension bridge. There are several deserted small houses at the bridge head, as well as an introduction to the Stilwell Road and the old bridge. I guess the local government once thought of developing this place into a tourist attraction, but gave up because of poor results. The driver told me The houses at the bridgehead used to be restaurants, but they probably closed down and were abandoned due to the lack of tourists. Walking on the wooden planks of the bridge, there are rolling hills on both sides, jagged rocks under the bridge, and flowing water. In my opinion, this place not only has historical relics, but also beautiful scenery. It is actually a very good tourist attraction. I hope it can attract more tourists in the future. Continue to go to the port and pass through the tunnel. I saw a sign that said it is 135 kilometers away from Myitkyina, Myanmar, and only 17 kilometers away from Ganbaidi, Myanmar. It seems that northern Myanmar is almost here. The closer to the border , the fewer cars on the road , and there are basically no houses on both sides of the road . I also know that as long as it is within our borders My safety is probably guaranteed under the protection of border guards , and this friendly driver probably just wants to make money from my 80 yuan round trip fare instead of selling me like a pig to northern Myanmar for online fraud. When I arrived at Houqiao Port, I finally felt relieved. There was a large circle of five-star red flags surrounding the port, and all the signboards were in both Chinese and Burmese. Due to Myanmar’s unstable political situation, the trade between the two sides has decreased a lot, and the port seemed very deserted . There were very few large trucks parked in the huge border logistics yard, and occasionally you could see a few Burmese trucks with red license plates. The shops along this street included import and export trade supermarkets, restaurants, mobile phone stores, pharmacies, etc. , but they didn’t seem to have much business. There was a sign in the mobile phone store recruiting Burmese workers. There should be some Burmese goods in the supermarket. A closer look revealed that most of them came from Thailand. There was a Lisu village next to the port, which was probably based on rural tourism. The village is built to standard standards, with neat blue brick roads and gates in ethnic style. Both the houses and the guardrails and greenery are very design-conscious. Several of the households have opened homestays. There is even a huge circular square in the center of the village , which looks like a stage. Next to the square is a Lisu folk culture exhibition hall, but the gate is locked and no longer open. Looking out at the foggy mountains in the distance, the terrifying no-man’s land of northern Myanmar is on the other side of the mountain. Let me briefly introduce you to Myanmar’s Kachin State across the way. It is located in northern Myanmar, bordering Yunnan and Tibet in China. Myitkyina is the capital of Kachin State. Kachin State was originally the territory of the Ailao Kingdom established by the ancestors of the Shan people. Later, it was incorporated into the Ming Dynasty with the Luchuan Kingdom and became part of the Yunnan Province of the Ming Dynasty. In the late Ming Dynasty , the Kachin State region annexed the Burmese Toungoo Kingdom. There are about 1 million Kachin people in Myanmar, most of whom believe in Christianity. The Jingpo people in China and the Kachin people in Myanmar are of the same origin. Regarding Myanmar’s Kachin State What everyone is most interested in is the ethnic local armed force, the Kachin Independence Army. The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) is also known as the Kachin People’s Liberation Army. It is one of the largest ethnic autonomous armed forces in the Union of Myanmar. On February 5, 1961, Kachin leader Zosay Zothu and others founded the Kachin Independence Army in a Kachin mountain village near Lashio and proposed the goal of establishing the Kachin Republic. In May 1987, the Myanmar federal government army launched a large-scale encirclement and suppression against it, and its central government was forced to retreat to the edge of Yingjiang County, Yunnan Province, China. On February 24, 1994, the Myanmar government and the Kachin Independence Army signed a peace agreement. The Kachin Independence Army became the 10th ethnic minority armed force to reconcile with the government. The Myanmar military government recognized its legal status and established the Kachin State Autonomous Region. Since 2010, the conflict between the Kachin Independence Army and the Myanmar government army has continued to escalate . The two sides have held many peace talks but have never reached a substantive agreement. The Kachin Independence Army’s strength is estimated to be no more than 15,000. The people are divided into 5 brigades , and there are about 32,000 government staff and some reserve personnel. They are mainly equipped with light weapons, part of which is the legacy of the separation of the Communist Party of Burma, and the other part is the captured equipment of the Myanmar government army. The main economic sources include jade and timber trade, etc. The economy of Kachin State is very backward. The products exported to the outside world are mainly natural resources. Bananas, rubber, rice, black sesame, silk cocoons, broken rice and other agricultural products are exported to China through the Reza Port and Ganbaidi Port in the territory. Industrial products are completely dependent on external imports. Among them, the Ganbaidi trade base is the third largest trade base in the Myanmar-China border trade. In the fiscal year from 2022 to 2023 , foreign trade exports were US$215 million and imports were US$10 million. From this data, it can be seen that Myanmar’s Kachin State’s exports to China far exceed imports . The income of US$200 million is not a small number. The local armed forces in Kachin State have monopolized the right to mine jade and timber. Cooperate with Chinese companies and individuals to mine jade and logs and export them to China. The main currencies used in Kachin State are Myanmar kyat and RMB. During the British rule of Myanmar, opium cultivation began in Kachin State. Later, the Kachin Independence Army and the Kachin New Democratic Army cultivated poppies on a large scale in the areas under their control. At its peak, the area of poppy cultivation reached more than 300,000 mu, with an annual output of nearly 400 tons of opium. Since then
, Chinese governments at all levels have provided a lot of manpower and material assistance to help them develop alternative planting. After 1998, the two special administrative regions basically achieved a ban on poppy cultivation. Kachin State has a very close relationship with China. The Kachin and Lisu peoples in Kachin State are cross-ethnic groups with the Jingpo and Lisu peoples in Dehong, Nujiang, Baoshan, Yunnan Province, China. The same ethnic group living along the border speaks the same language and has the same customs, and they have frequent exchanges . The Myanmar government army and the Kachin Independence Army have held several peace talks in Ruili City, Yunnan Province. In early January 2015, the Myanmar military launched an operation to crack down on illegal loggers in order to cut off the financial resources of the Kachin Independence Army . More than 100 Chinese nationals were detained. Subsequently , the Kachin Army General Headquarters launched the China-Myanmar Friendship Rescue No. 1 Special Operation. 305 Chinese logging and gold mining workers trapped in the war zone broke through the blockade of the Myanmar government army in batches with the arrangement of the Kachin Army General Headquarters and returned to China. From June 2 to 4, 2016, Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Hong Liang led a delegation to Kachin State The Kachin Independence Army in Kachin State has also sought help from the United States. In April 2014, the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Kachin Independence Army of Myanmar, Sanlu Ganmao, paid an 11-day visit to the United States, but the United States did not provide substantial assistance. From January 11 to 15, 2015, a US delegation visited Myanmar. Among them, several senior military officials including the Deputy Commander of the Pacific Command visited Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State in northern Myanmar, and met with the General Staff of the Myanmar Armed Forces, the commander of the Myitkyina Military Region and brigade-level frontline officers. In 2014, Peng Jiasheng of Kokang returned to power and formed an armed force with the help of the Kachin Independence Army , the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army , which is now the Kokang In fact, the Gan Menglian Army benefited mainly from the support of the Kachin Independence Army in its early days. In November 2016, the Kachin Independence Army, the Ta’ang National Liberation Army, and the Arakan Army allied with the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army to form the United Front of Northern Myanmar to jointly fight against the government army. After the tour of the port, I started to return. The friendly driver seemed even more kind, and I completely let down my guard. Every Chinese person on the China-Myanmar border can feel that this border is like a separation between two worlds. On one side is the endless war and hardship that has lasted for decades, and on the other side is peace, prosperity and stability. As we work hard on the road of economic development, I don’t know when the bright future of northern Myanmar will come. Is Zhu Bajie actually from Yunnan? The only temple in the world dedicated to Zhu Bajie is located in Baoshan City, Yunnan Province. The most amazing thing about Bajie Temple is that it existed before Wu Cheng’en wrote “Journey to the West.” There are many unique stories between Bajie Temple and the local area . Today I will visit this magical Bajie Temple. It’s about 14 kilometers from Baoshan City to Bajie Temple. My online taxi driver told me that before last year, Burmese people often came to Baoshan to work, such as cutting sugarcane. But after the war in northern Myanmar, Burmese people have found it harder to come. I asked the driver why Tengchong, a county-level city under Baoshan, is more famous than its big brother Baoshan. The driver replied that Tengchong is famous because of its volcanoes, hot springs, and expeditionary military relics. The road became increasingly remote, practically entering the countryside. From the looks of it, the houses in rural Yunnan are quite well-built. Perhaps it’s because it’s close to the city, so people earn more. At the waiting platform on the way to Bajie Temple , a painting enthusiast drew a cartoon of Marshal Tianpeng. Sadly, the eldest brother in the painting is even larger and more imposing than the protagonist . Two elderly women sat, one watching a silly traveler from afar, talking in low voices . The contrast with this trendy cartoon reveals an absurd fusion of art and reality. The platform was filled with all kinds of shabby seats. If they had no holes , they wouldn’t be here. Bajie Temple is the most shabby temple I’ve ever seen, bar none . The area in front has been transformed into a local senior citizen association. When I went in to visit, there were elderly people playing and having fun inside. The sound of mahjong was audible. The second area is the temple hall. This temple is called Bajie Temple , but in fact, the second brother is quite pitiful. He cannot enter the main hall and can only live in a side hall. After all, Guanyin Bodhisattva, Earth Mother Bodhisattva, Manjusri Bodhisattva and others have higher status. The statue of Bajie carries a nine-toothed rake on his shoulder, wears a monk’s hat, hemp shoes , and a blue cloth shirt . He has a big belly and looks honest and simple. The original statue was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. The wall of the rebuilt statue has the origin of Bajie Temple written on it. There is an important piece of information in it. Zhu Bajie was born in Shihua Cave of Reclining Buddha Temple, one kilometer away from here. The West Village mentioned here is Gao Laozhuang . From here Here you can get two little-known facts: Where is Zhu Bajie from? He is from Baoshan, Yunnan. Where is Gao Laozhuang? It is in Baoshan, Yunnan. It is said that Bajie Temple is the most effective place for praying for marriage and is a spiritual sanctuary for singles. In the next section of the video, I will continue to dig deep into the “shocking news” of Bajie Temple. As the only temple in the country that enshrines the clay statue of Zhu Bajie, its history can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty. Long before Wu Chengen wrote “Journey to the West”, there was a legend about Zhu Bajie here. Some people believe that the prototype of Zhu Bajie in Wu Chengen’s works came from this place. There are many versions of the legend of Bajie Temple. I only chose one of them. When Zhu Bajie was a demon, he was active in the Gao Laozhuang area. Later, Zhu Bajie transformed into a young man from a farming family . Gao Taigong’s son-in-law came to the village but didn’t want to marry Miss Gao. Soon after, his lazy and gluttonous nature gradually emerged. To avoid trouble, Zhu Bajie and Miss Gao moved to Xiaolinggang behind the village. After being enlightened by Guanyin Bodhisattva, Tang Monk passed by here on his way to the West to obtain Buddhist scriptures. He worshipped Tang Monk as his master and worked with Sun Wukong and Monk Sha to protect Tang Monk on his journey to the West. Gao Village was therefore renamed Xizhuang. After Bajie became an immortal , the villagers built a temple in Xizhuang and made a golden statue of him. They offered incense all year round. Not only did the residents of the surrounding villages of Xizhuang Village believe in Zhu Bajie, they often came together to pray for his protection. It is said that this temple is very effective , especially for wishes related to marriage between men and women. It is almost guaranteed to be granted . Which one came first, “Journey to the West” or Bajie Temple? Since Bajie Temple was founded in the Tang Dynasty , it is obvious that “Journey to the West” did not come first and then Bajie Temple. So how did Wu Chengen, the author of “Journey to the West”, know this story? According to relevant research materials, Wu Chengen did not go to Yongchang County in the Ming Dynasty , which is today’s Baoshan. However, most of the elders in Xizhuang Village said with certainty that their ancestors had contact with Wu Chengen. The story of Zhu Bajie getting married in Gao Laozhuang was told to Wu Chengen by these people. However, the two sides were thousands of miles apart. How did they come into contact? I found an important piece of information. In the early Ming Dynasty , the Dai and Gao families were the first to migrate here from Jiangsu. In 2000, a man from Xizhuang Village A man named Zhang Haiyuan once made a special trip to Jiangsu to investigate. He found that the Dong family in the village were indeed from Huai’an, Jiangsu, and were relatives of Wu Cheng’en’s family. When a member of the Dong family returned to Huai’an, Jiangsu to visit relatives, Wu Cheng’en made a special trip to the Dong family. The story about the legend of Zhu Bajie from Xizhuang Village told by this Dong relative was a treasure to Wu Cheng’en, who was in his 60s and was collecting materials to write “Journey to the West”. The story of Zhu Bajie’s marriage in Xizhuang Village was basically moved into the 18th chapter of “Journey to the West”, where Tang Sanzang escapes from danger in Guanyin Temple and the Monkey King eliminates demons in Gao Laozhuang . This plot is full of suspense and reasoning , and is even more dramatic than a TV drama. It is said that praying for marriage in Bajie Temple is more effective . Personally, I’m more puzzled. Is it the reverse operation? Zhu Bajie is most famous for flirting with Chang’e, but he can’t get what he wants and the advantage he gets is very limited. The original Journey to the West describes Zhu Bajie pulling Chang’e to rest with him. Chang’e repeatedly refused and hid from him, feeling unhappy. But Zhu Bajie was as bold as the sky and his cry was like thunder , almost shaking down the gate of heaven. From these plots, Zhu Bajie only flirted with Chang’e with words, at most accompanied by physical movements such as pulling. He was then taken to Lingxiao Palace and sentenced to death in the first trial. Thanks to Taibai Jinxing’s intercession , the sentence was commuted to two thousand blows. He said a few cruel words and was beaten with two thousand hammers. Second Brother is also suffering in his heart, and he can bless you to have a successful date and a smooth blind date . I think those who are depressed can come I paid my last respects at Bajie Temple. After all, Second Brother is open-minded and doesn’t take things personally. He is mentally healthy and has zero mental fatigue. After visiting Bajie Temple, my next stop is an old street in Banqiao Town. It was one of the important trade routes in western Yunnan during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and also an important post station on the Southern Silk Road. The most famous place on this street is this century-old teahouse. It opened in the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty and has a history of more than 180 years. The teahouse retains the old wooden frame structure, uneven earthen walls, old tables and chairs, etc., which are full of age. The fee here is 3 yuan per person , and refills are free and unlimited. The century-old earthen stove is used to boil water and make tea. The tea leaves are local raw Pu’er. Guixianglou, diagonally opposite the old teahouse, is a century-old intangible cultural heritage pastry shop. Its pastry-making process originated from seven generations of ancestors in Nanjing and is a municipal intangible cultural heritage. The shop only sells traditional Longyang old-style pastries, such as brown sugar cakes and green bean cakes, which are sweet but not greasy and are known for their long-lasting storage. The packaging follows the old-fashioned method of using straw paper and red lines. I bought two packs for a total of 25 yuan. After finishing my tour of the old street and preparing to return to the city, an elegant tall tourist greeted me and asked me if I was from the Ming Dynasty . I was very surprised. Since the outbreak of the epidemic, my travel self-media career has entered a semi-retirement state. In the past few years, I have rarely been greeted by viewers on the street. This elegant tall audience member should be a shy science and engineering man. We both pretended to be calm and chatted about some travel-related topics, and then waved goodbye . In the past, I would ask fans to comment on my videos with a sentence ” The real person of the Ming Dynasty is better than the video.” He’s much more handsome. But this time, facing this rational, pragmatic, and logical science and engineering man, I didn’t make this request because I was afraid he wouldn’t be able to get over this hurdle of conscience. I want to take you to the hometown of clouds, spread your wings and listen to the wind ‘s whispers. I want to pack our bags and head to a fragrant land with you in the new blooming season. Life’s journey is full of chance encounters, and fate is always around you . With you on this journey, the wind blows through the blooming flowers like rain, condensing the joys and sorrows of time. I understand the meaning of companionship. With you in this life, the flowers fall, creating countless ripples that travel across the world. The warmth of constancy is the most precious encounter .
