Come with us to rural Dorset, to visit Thomas Hardy’s cottage, the birthplace of the beloved Victorian Author. We’ll also be stopping at Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, where the famous Hovis advert was filmed in 1973.
Hidden in woodland northeast of Higher Brockhampton in Dorset, is the beautiful cob and thatched cottage where the famous novelist was born in 1840. He wrote many of his books (including Far From the Madding Crowd) in the top room, working at a small desk overlooking the garden.
Hardy and his family grew vegetables and fruit in their garden, keeping a pig, hens, and bees. When the family moved from the cottage in 1912, Hardy helped the next tenant redesign the plot into the picturesque cottage garden you see today. You can visit this enchanting place until October with the @nationaltrust. We recommend booking in advance.
Gold Hill in Shaftesbury – also known as ‘Hovis Hill’ – is the location of the famous Hovis bread advert from 1973 directed by Ridley Scott.
The view gazing down from the top of the lane has been called “one of the most romantic sights in England” and often appears on the covers of books, chocolate boxes and calendars.
Shaftesbury is one of the highest towns in England, standing at 750 feet
above sea level. Thomas Hardy set two of his novels (Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure) in this sweet market town that he called “breezy and whimsical.”

#12 Gold Hill used to be a vacation home to rent but is now closed permanently. I was saving my pennies in hopes of staying there one day, but sadly that will not happen now. 😑 Thanks for the tours!
