A Kyoto trip always fills me with excitement This time, I planned a trip to see the Gion Festival We’re traveling by Haruka train It takes 1 hour and 15 minutes to Kyoto Because I want to get the Gion Festival stamp I brought my Kiki’s Delivery Service notebook too 🙂 This is my fourth visit, but the places I want to go never seem to decrease Two-way ticket gates Such a beautiful Japanese summer sky I booked a place near Gion so I could enjoy the festival up close A hotel with a rooftop and open-air bath overlooking Kiyomizu-dera Since check-in wasn’t yet, I just left my luggage Decorations visible everywhere during the festival period The restaurant we’re heading to closes at 3 PM, so we’re hurrying over Fans with festival maps printed on them are being handed out everywhere The restaurant I visited two years ago Honke Owariya always has a line A soba shop with a 550-year tradition of supplying the imperial court Famous for its Horai Soba and Herring Soba Their signature dish, Horai Soba Meaning “soba that brings good fortune” Warm welcome tea An elevator? A meeting of tradition and modernity Last time I tried a different menu item Looking forward to Horai Soba 🙂 Features five layers of soba noodles and colorful toppings My companion ordered the tempura soba set The buckwheat noodles are savory and have a nice aroma The ingredients are fresh and neatly prepared, making me feel like I’m being treated to a special meal Instructions on how to eat it Add the toppings, pour on the tsuyu sauce, and enjoy! You can enjoy different soba noodles on each plate I enjoyed my meal once again Caution: Steep stairs It’s the Gion Festival season, so the shop is decorated too There are also low tables on the first floor We finished eating and came out just as they were closing This is the monaka shop across the street I visited two years ago It had a neighborhood gathering place vibe and the taste was great too The shopping mall we’re heading to now a remodeled Kyoto Telephone Bureau building constructed in 1926 Japan’s renowned architect Kengo Kuma was responsible for the space design The stationery shop visible on the first floor has many travel-related items I also bought the stamp notebook I’d been looking for Kiki notebook, close your eyes for a moment I regret not pressing it lightly There are also commemorative stamps available during the festival period Sabi: They overlapped Lego: I guess our paper is a bit small Luckily, the stamps didn’t overlap We spotted a shaved ice shop with a long line and quickly joined it Feeling the Seongsu-dong vibe in Kyoto Warm tea is served first The hojicha shaved ice my group chose Tastes like Korean ice cream made with red beans The soft cream pairs well with the shaved ice Grapefruit yogurt shaved ice with a nice color combination I picked it for the visuals, but it was surprisingly delicious It was worth the wait in line Highly recommend this Kyoto shaved ice spot A scene that captures the essence of Japanese summer Preparations for the Gion Festival are in full swing Preparations for the Gion Festival are in full swing The car-free street starts at 6 PM L: There are so many shops (amazing) The shops in the alleys are already open A joyful festival for everyone You can see the floats, the symbol of the Gion Festival They’re even showing the inside before the parade starts It seems like the floats are made by community groups As you walk, you can see floats with different designs Each float has a different top decoration A performance praying for the village’s well-being Car-free streets to enjoy during the Gion Festival period I’ve never seen Kyoto this crowded before You can buy miniature floats at the department store The descriptions of the floats are detailed too Found a fan I want to buy It’s full of festival-related souvenirs This is a decorative charm in the shape of an amulet L: I guess the first half of the festival and the second half are different They say it’s mainly hung on entrance doors You can also find festival-related souvenirs in existing shops There are cute wooden dolls too Did you know Nintendo originated in Kyoto? Recently, while playing Nintendo Switch 2, I really wanted to visit the Nintendo store It was packed with tempting goods, and I couldn’t leave… Is it even allowed for Joy-Con colors to be this pretty? A souvenir set of Nintendo character erasers in a container After having fun, we headed back to the hotel We got so caught up exploring that we were late for check-in Arriving late, we got a room on a lower floor It has an old-fashioned atmosphere, and the floor is tatami Traditional Japanese attire provided by the hotel for wearing outside It comes with socks and a small pouch too I should take the pouch with me I booked this hotel because of the rooftop bar There’s also a foot bath where you can soak your feet in hot spring water and you can look out over the scenery of the Kamo River The bar operates until 10 PM, so you can use it freely after that The scenery I watched while feeling the river breeze will stay with me for a long time The car-free street operates until 11 PM Not wanting to let the night pass like this, I take a night stroll Matsuri commemorative talismans visible everywhere Always an enjoyable stroll through Kyoto’s alleyways The pudding shop where I had a delicious treat two years ago It’s still here, and I’m glad to see it I decided to take the bus because I wanted to see the scenery I’ve just set my destination and am going wherever the mood takes me And so I encounter all sorts of scenery Matsuri talismans gathering The pleasant sounds of summer This time, I enter through the side door again The autumn leaves left behind from last fall The Aqueduct Pavilion was modeled after Roman architecture There are many great spots for taking photos The waterway flowing through the Aqueduct Pavilion Several small temples are located beside Nanzenji Though separate temples, they are managed together with Nanzenji There’s also a statue of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, like the one I saw on my trip to Nara The main hall of Nanzenji is a nice place to rest (no photography allowed inside) On the way down, another temple with a beautiful garden I learned about it while watching my favorite Japanese videos Glass tiles created by waves and light At first glance, it almost looks like a mirror ball I wonder whose house that is? The lotus blooms fully in the morning In the afternoon, they close their petals It’s daytime, so they’re slowly closing Kyoto offers beautiful scenery wherever you go That’s probably why I always want to come back This is the main gate, hehe If you’re coming to the main gate, please use the subway 🙂 Back to the crowded areas Kyoto’s capricious summer weather We bought a bunch of ekiben I was disappointed I couldn’t eat at Tōyōtei They sell ekiben at the Isetan department store in Kyoto Station 🙂 S: Hmm. Delicious Famous for cutting easily with chopsticks They also sell Meissen tonkatsu ekiben We didn’t forget dessert either Ready to make watermelon bars Watermelon yokan that looks and tastes great
