フランスの美しい街ルーアンへ!大聖堂とグロ・オルロージュを巡る絶景街歩き【Rouen/Normandy】

Hello, this is Keisuke. Today I’m heading to Rouen, the capital of France’s Normandy region. Rouen is approximately 135 km northeast of Paris, about an hour and a half by car. It’s the second week of May, and temperatures are rising day by day. Far ahead, in the distance, is the new Arc de Triomphe. After crossing the Seine River and passing through several tunnels, I finally emerged above ground. The former toll booths will disappear from the A14 highway after June 19, 2024. A roadside transit detection system photographs license plates and records the vehicle type, starting point, and destination. Passengers can later search their vehicle license plate number on a website called SANEF to make online payments. Since its introduction, this system has been highly praised by users for its reduced congestion, CO2 emissions, fuel savings, and convenience . Despite its convenience, the only drawback of the A14 is its somewhat high toll fees. [Music] The city of Rouen seems to be at the end of this bridge . The Seine River flows under it. [Music] Have we arrived? So, we arrived safely in Rouen. There seems to be a church nearby. Oh, is that tower? Is it this one? It’s a beautiful day today. Oh, it’s a kitty! It’s about 23 degrees Celsius right now. This is it. Rouen has flourished as a center of Catholicism since the Middle Ages, and many churches and monasteries were built there . This one is one of them. I don’t think the church is open… It’s a very old church. Maybe it’s closed? It seems it’s closed after all. We walk around the whole area. Ah, but there are many impressive buildings. This one is also impressive. Oh? Let’s go there for a bit. It’s a very tall building… This church began in the 7th century as a chapel to house the remains of Saint-Nicaise. However, it was destroyed by fire in 1934. It was later rebuilt, but it has been completely closed since 2002 due to safety concerns. The next place is in the 1st century BC. After Rouen was conquered by the Roman Empire, the city was renamed Rotomagus and developed as a transportation hub along the Seine River. It’s built like a church. It’s quite far away, but it looks so big. [Music] I found this. What is it? [Music] Apparently, beneath this fountain monument, built in 1879, is a huge water tank built to alleviate Rouen’s water shortage. There was something here, too. Oh, the stone slab is inscribed “Natural History Museum.” It looks like there’s no one there… Can I go in? No one there… Maybe it’s closed? It says “The entrance is over there.” I went in. No one there… Is it okay to go in from there? There’s a strange building right in front. It says “musée” here… This one. See? musée… Above this white statue, it says “Ancient Museum.” But is it open? Is it open? Is this open? I thought it was closed at all… It’s open. [Music] Look, it’s open… I don’t have much time today, so I’ll head out. There are really rows of half-timbered houses. You could almost say they’re all Colombage-style. Apparently there’s a large monastery in Rouen. Go straight. It’s quite a distance. It’s 600 meters from here. I’ll just keep going. Ah, there are people around here! Ah, there’s a tall building at my destination. It’s so quiet… I can understand why people stayed indoors during the Covid pandemic … The sand is exposed here, so it’s difficult to walk. It feels like I’m in the city center. The atmosphere has changed a bit from before. Ahead, ah! I can see the building from before . The building I saw over there earlier. Is this really big? The building I saw from afar earlier was this building. This is it . Is this the monastery? During the Second Empire, Napoleon III commissioned the construction of monuments throughout France in honor of his grandfather, Napoleon I. This 6-meter- tall bronze statue of Napoleon I in military uniform was erected in 1865. Oh, there was another tall building over there. This is Rouen’s town hall. [Music] This is huge, too. The bell tower is over 80 meters tall . It’s so big. [Music] Can you even get inside? There’s another tower just beyond this front. [Music] A masterpiece of Gothic architecture towering over the town of Rouen. This is the Abbey Church of Saint-Ouen. It originally began as a monastery built in the 7th century as the tomb of Saint-Ouen, the bishop of Rouen . The current building was completed in 1537 after several centuries. It seems that tours are open during limited hours. And here’s what the inside of the abbey looks like. [Music] [music] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [ MUSIC] [ MUSIC] [ MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] Unfortunately, we can’t see it in its entirety, but this legendary organ, 17 meters high, 10 meters wide, and with over 3,000 pipes, was renovated in the 19th century by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, France’s greatest organ builder. And here’s the sound it produces. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] We’ve just left the monastery. A dog is in the water! We’re heading to our next location. [MUSIC] This shop is cute, too. It’s lunchtime, so everyone’s eating. That’s the cathedral over there. Go straight here and turn left. With so many old buildings still standing… It’s only about 200 meters away. The town really hasn’t changed. Yes. We’ve come. This is it. [MUSIC] We’ve arrived at the square overlooking Saint-Maclou Cathedral. This Flamboyant-style cathedral features flickering flame-like decorations throughout. The top of the door looks like this. And here’s the interior. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Let’s go. A small tram was running through this town, too. Apparently there’s a cloister nearby. Oh, the houses are so cute. [Music] What a surprise! It seems there’s the Saint-Maclou Cloister. Can I just go in? Oh, so this is what it looks like. [Music] In the mid-14th century, a plague epidemic claimed many lives. A new cemetery was needed, and this cloister was built near the church. Ahead of us is the cafe I saw earlier. Let’s head to our next location. It’s dazzling. This is Rouen Station, connected to Saint-Lazare Station in Paris. To the right of it, there’s a church-like building. It also looks ancient. [Music] It will be designated a Historic Monument in 2022. This time is completely off. We’re heading for a certain tower. Oh, on the left, oh, that’s it. [Music] This is the central tower of the castle built by Philip II after his conquest of Normandy. The castle was a multipurpose fortress that also served as the headquarters of administrative and judicial institutions, and this tower is the only surviving remains. [Music] It is said to be about 30m high and 14m in diameter. There is a record that Jeanne d’Arc, who was captured in 1429, was threatened with torture instruments in this tower on May 9, 1431, but it seems that she was actually imprisoned in a different tower. Oh, is there a church over there too? Oh, this one is amazing too. There’s one over there too. Look, there’s one over there too. Wow, this one is amazing too. This church began as a burial place for Saint-Godard and Saint-Romain, and was rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries after being burned down in 1248. The glass windows were restored in the 19th century, and the Many of the windows have been reconstructed with stained glass. The church ‘s architectural style is primarily Gothic and Flamboyant, with some Renaissance elements in the tower and other areas. [Music] The building standing diagonally to the left of the church is inscribed “Bibliothèque. ” This is the facade. Founded by Napoleon’s decree in 1801, this art museum houses landscapes of Rouen , including Monet’s Rouen Cathedral series, as well as works by Impressionists Sisley, Pissarro, and Renoir. Is this other building also a church? This building, which at first glance appears to be a church, is actually an art museum . So, let’s take a quick look inside. This is a unique museum specializing in ironwork. Its founder, Le Secq des Tournelles, was a painter and one of France’s earliest photographers. He began collecting decorative ironwork while traveling around the country photographing historical buildings. His son later took over and further expanded the collection. His son eventually donated the collection to the city of Rouen. The building where the collection is displayed is a former Gothic church, the Saint-Laurent Church. After restoration, it was converted into a museum and opened in 1921. The exhibition style is unique, utilizing the church’s space to create a visually appealing layout using walls and glass cases. The exhibition space itself is a form of art , and the museum’s intention in displaying the collection is apparent . We quickly tour the museum and then head to our next stop. [Music] It’s beautiful here. [Music] Is this the metro? There’s a metro! This building didn’t seem that big from where we were, but it continues all the way to the back! Look! [ Music] Wow. Oh, it’s amazing. It’s incredible. It’s said to be the “most beautiful Gothic building” among French courts. It’s so big. There’s something going on here. Can we go in? Oh, no. Wow, this is it. This is the famous Rouen Cathedral. The central spire is 151 meters high. When it was completed in 1876, the iron spire was the tallest building in the world. It remains the tallest cathedral in France. Let’s go inside. It’s so detailed. [Music] Now , let’s take a look inside. And this is the interior of the cathedral. [Music] [Music] Ah , it is. [Music] Wow, it’s dazzling. You can see the spire very well from here! It seems to be undergoing restoration work now. We’ve arrived at a street with a large clock tower. [Music] This is a large clock symbolizing the wealth and prosperity of Rouen. The dial is 2.5 meters in diameter. It symbolizes Rouen’s economic prosperity, thanks to the wool industry. The dial is engraved with a radiating pattern reminiscent of sunlight, and the hour hands are designed to resemble the sun. [Music] This reminds me of the large clock on Sainte Chapelle Street in Paris . There’s a lot of foot traffic. So, let’s keep going straight. Immediately after passing through the arch, we found a lovely alley. This umbrella is so cute! Look. [Music] This street is so cute. And this is directly behind where we just passed. It looks like this. We’re heading towards the square where Jeanne d’Arc Church is located. The sun’s getting pretty dark. The sign says we’re about 160 meters away. There’s really only Colombages buildings. Wow, this place is amazing too. Look, this street too. 100 meters away. It looks like we’ve finally arrived at the square. We’ve arrived at the square. This looks like a market. This is it. St. Jeanne d’Arc Church was built in the square where Jeanne d’Arc is said to have been burned at the stake. And this is the inside of the church. Apparently, they reused stained glass from St. Vincent Church, which was destroyed during World War II . And just outside the church. A white stone monument still marks the exact spot where Jeanne d’Arc was executed. There are so many stuffed bears! 12 of them! There are lots of cute shops around here . So, this time I introduced you to the town of Rouen, which is popular for its history and streetscape. Rouen is only about an hour and a half by train from Paris, so it’s a town that is easily accessible for a day trip from Paris. I hope this will be helpful for your future trip to Paris . I look forward to hearing your thoughts! So, I hope you have a good day tomorrow ! Until next time!
