【Food tour Japan】A trip to enjoy 10 gourmet foods you want to eat on your trip to Okayama

Good morning. This time I’m heading to Okayama. I traveled by Shinkansen and arrived in Okayama in the morning, where I enjoyed the local cuisine. I also visited Korakuen, one of the three most famous gardens in Japan, during my free time. I hope you enjoy your trip to Okayama to the end. Good morning. I went to Tokyo Station to catch the Shinkansen again this morning. First, I’m going to buy an ekiben for breakfast. I feel like an ekiben makes breakfast instantly more luxurious. Today I bought oyster rice from Akkeshi, Hokkaido (1,190 yen). It couldn’t be more luxurious. Well, today I’m taking the Tokaido Shinkansen. My business trip destination this time is Okayama Prefecture! I joined the other business travelers and got on the train, and we’re about to depart. Okay, I’ll eat the ekiben right away. It looks delicious. The main dish, the oysters, have a great presence, so I’ll eat it. Ah, it’s delicious. It’s a dish full of umami, and it’s delicious even as a bento. The rice is well seasoned, and even without the oysters, it keeps on eating. This ekiben is so delicious, it makes me happy right from the morning. The flavor of the shiitake mushrooms and clams makes me want to drink alcohol. But for now, I’ll hold back and fill my stomach with delicious oysters and rice. And while I was leisurely enjoying the ekiben, the bullet train was moving at full speed and I was working. Before I knew it, Mt. Fuji was right in front of me. By the way, this time I’m planning to stay for 2 nights and 3 days. I’m planning to take a day off tomorrow to do some sightseeing, so please enjoy it with me. Well, now that I’ve seen Mt. Fuji, I’ll work until I get to Okayama. After 3 hours of being shaken by the bullet train, I arrived in Okayama! Well, this time, as usual, I go around eating between work. Today, I have quite a bit of time before my afternoon schedule, so I’ll take a little time to go to the west side of the station. I’m looking forward to it, so I got up early lol. First, I’ll take the tram from Okayama Station. There are two types of trams that are affordable and easy to understand. It’s nice to have a town with a tram. I was slowly rocked for a while. I got off at “Kencho-dori”. After walking for about 3 minutes, I arrived at a shop called “Yamachin” founded in 1963. Inside the shop, they sell Chinese bento and side dishes. The specialty of this shop is pork buns, which they sometimes sell 1800 of in a day. I was looking forward to it because it is a signature product that has been popular with locals since the shop opened. It was hot and looked delicious (420 yen). When I picked it up, it was quite large and heavy. Let’s eat. Oh, there’s something hidden. I couldn’t reach the ingredients in one bite, but the dough was thick and fluffy. It was a quail’s egg, which was my first time, but it was moist and delicious. The other ingredients were braised pork, minced meat, onions, and Ushimado cabbage, so it was full of ingredients. It was packed to the brim, and the seasoning was surprisingly light. I used the ponzu sauce and mustard that came with it to change the flavor. You can’t go wrong with these toppings. It’s a combination that brings out the sweetness of the meat and dough. I was very satisfied with the hearty local gourmet food I had in the morning. It was a good start to my food tour of Okayama. Ah, it was delicious… it warmed me up nicely. By the way, Yamachin’s pork buns were also sold as souvenirs at Okayama Station. If you don’t have time to stop by the store but are interested, please do. Okay, let’s go to another place! I ended up at this store. Oh, they’re looking this way. So I came to a restaurant called “Chukasoba Fujii” where you can eat Kasaoka ramen. The menu was simple, so I ordered the regular. Kasaoka is a city in the southwestern part of Okayama Prefecture, right next to Fukuyama City in Hiroshima Prefecture. I thought I could include it in my route tomorrow, but it was a bit far, so I’ll save it for another time. The store was quite crowded with customers. Amazing… it’s beautiful. The characteristic of Kasaoka ramen is its soy sauce soup made with chicken stock. There’s a lot of good stuff in it… Shall I start with the soup? Ahh, it’s delicious… It’s a comforting taste. It’s sweet and quite light. And it’s a shame to break the noodles… The noodles are smooth and straight, and they’re also beautiful. They have a nice texture. They go down just as smoothly as they look. And the small cut meat is chicken char siu. Another feature of Kasaoka ramen is that it uses chicken instead of pork. Oh, it has a crunchy texture that you don’t often find in regular ramen. In Kyushu and Chugoku regions, it’s a parent chicken called “kashiwa,” and it has a hard texture. The more you chew it, the more delicious it becomes. There’s also a lot of scallions that have absorbed the soup and become soft. The bamboo shoots are soft and delicious. I didn’t use them, but I wonder if I can add them to the ramen? By the way, Kasaoka has long been a town with a thriving poultry and noodle industry. It seems that ramen made with chicken soup and chicken char siu has been eaten since before the war. Moreover, it seems that many shops are open in the morning. I couldn’t make it this time, but I’d like to try it in Kasaoka someday. I was able to taste the local ramen, which was beautiful to look at and unique. It was delicious, and I’d love to eat it again. Then, I was surprised to see a stone monument along the river. It is a monument to a person named “Ukita Kokichi.” What did this “Hyogu-shi Kokichi” do? He apparently glided from this Kyobashi to the riverbank in 1785. And this is the bridge pier that was used for the Kyobashi before it was rebuilt. Depending on the definition, there are people overseas who flew in the sky even earlier, such as using hot air balloons. But at least the first flight in Japan was Ukita Kokichi, and the place where it took place is said to be that bridge. Of course, the bridge has already been rebuilt, but this is the place where the first person in Japan took off into the sky. It’s a history that suits Okayama, the land of sunshine. It’s raining today though lol. By the way, “Hyogu-shi” refers to a person who makes paper sliding doors and sliding doors by pasting cloth or paper. Kokichi used his techniques to make wings using bamboo and paper. This happened more than 100 years before the Wright brothers’ first flight, and I think Kokichi the mounter was also a great pioneer. However, during several flying experiments, the plane crashed into the crowd, causing chaos. At the time, people didn’t even think about people in the air, so people may have doubted whether the thing that crashed was even human. And Kokichi’s troublemaking made Ikeda Harumasa, the feudal lord of Okayama at the time, angry. Kokichi was banned from Okayama, and moved to Shizuoka. There are exceptions, but it may be better to be careful about how you do things no matter what you do. While I was walking and thinking about pioneers who are not in history textbooks, I arrived at the next shop. The shop is Koeido Chunagon Honten, a long-established store of Okayama’s famous confectionery “kibi dango” founded in 1856. Inside the store, “kibi dango” and other sweets are neatly lined up. Today, I went to the coffee shop “Koei-do Sabo Hinemosu” in the back. I was thinking of having “kibi dango” for dessert. They recommended this “Hinemosu Gozen”. I had been interested in it before I came and was unsure, but I ordered it anyway lol. By the way, “Hinemosu” is an old word that means from morning to night or all day long. I’m curious about the statue in the back… It’s great that the signature dish is served with tea. I would be happy if I was treated like this. By the way, “kibi dango” is made in Kibi Province using “kibi”, so it’s called Kibi dango. There seems to be a “Yata no Kibi dango” in Hokkaido that was born from a different origin. Wow, this gets me excited. It’s gorgeous even though it doesn’t use meat or fish. The strawberry sweet sake on the side. Now, I’ll eat while looking at the menu. First, spring white miso soup. It is based on white miso, kelp stock, and soy milk. It’s delicious… I feel spring. There are lots of spring-like ingredients, such as udo and Brussels sprouts. This is a tofu dish with fruit tomatoes. It is said to be tossed with stewed tomato sauce. Wow, it’s delicious! Sweet. It’s sweet, but also mellow and gentle. The bracken simmered in soy sauce had a great texture and my expectations were immediately raised. This is handmade sesame tofu. Soy sauce on the bottom and yuzu kosho on top. I thought it would be soft, but it was surprisingly firm. It has a good flavor and is delicious. It’s also refreshing to eat it with yuzu kosho. This is green onions and avocado tossed in vinegared miso. It’s the first time I’ve tried this combination, but the sweet vinegared miso goes well with it. This is also made by stir-frying new onions and butterbur with salt and soy sauce, but it’s also crunchy and has a nice aroma that lingers in your nose. The simple seasoning makes it go well with rice. And the rice is mixed with butterbur and wakame seaweed. I’m satisfied with just this and the miso soup. In addition, there is tsukudani, which is stewed butterbur leaves, bonito flakes, and pickled plums. I had this with rice. I got to taste the whole butterbur. The sourness of the plum was also good. There was no meat or fish, but I would like to eat this every day. All the dishes were well seasoned and went well with rice, so I don’t think you’ll ever feel unsatisfied. And the strawberry sweet sake is actually served before the meal, but this time I had it after I had finished everything. This was also delicious. Full of strawberry flavor. I never thought I’d be able to experience such a taste with sweet sake. I wish they would serve this as a single item even without the Himemosu Gozen. And finally, there was tea and sweets after the meal. Seasonal high-quality sweets. I was also happy with the matcha. And then I got a second kibi dango. Maybe the first one was free. Even so, the gozen was much more delicious than I expected. I was thinking about ordering it when I was able to, but I was right to order it. So this time I just walked in and ordered, but since the quantity is limited, it seems like it’s safer to make a reservation. Moreover, the contents of the gozen seem to change every month, so I’d like to try them every month. I was able to enjoy the food that makes you feel the season with the ingredients. Very satisfied! Thank you for the meal. And the last thing I ate, the high-grade confectionery and “kibi dango”, can be bought at Koueido outside. It’s a standard souvenir to buy, so it’s good to have at least one. I bought a set of “Mukashi Kibi Dango” and Japanese tea. Now, I’m going to head towards Korakuen. The route is to cross the Asahikawa River at Kyobashi and then come back again from this Aioibashi. By the way, in 1785, “Hyogu-shi Kokichi” flew from Kyobashi and was banned from Okayama. About 200 years later, in 1997, he was released from his sentence by the 16th head of the former Okayama feudal lord, “Ikeda Takamasa”. It’s probably the kind of thing that would make the news, that the current heads of the two families, who were at war during the Sengoku period, have made a historic reconciliation! I don’t think it’s a big deal anymore lol. It’s an opportunity to dig up the episodes from that time. Renovation of Okayama Castle on the left was completed on November 3, 2022. It is also known as the “Crow Castle” because of its black walls that resemble crows. Today, I plan to leave the visit of Okayama Castle for another time and go back to Okayama Station by going through Korakuen. By the way, the stone walls here are a different color only at the top, which is said to be the result of the Okayama air raid in 1945. The upper part has been burned and discolored red. The castle tower was burned and rebuilt. Not only was the castle tower burned in the air raid, but some of the stone walls have also discolored. And in front of Korakuen is a truss bridge called “Tsukimi Bridge”, which is rare for a bridge with only one pier. Tsukimi Bridge was built as a route between Okayama Castle and Korakuen on the occasion of the 1954 Industrial Tourism Expo. Before that, the quickest way to cross was by boat, but it was not completed in time for the expo. By the way, in recent years, there have been frequent discussions about rebuilding the bridge. Proponents of rebuilding the bridge argue that the design is not in keeping with the original design and that it would also help promote tourism. I do think that a design like Matsumoto Castle matches well with a bridge between Korakuen and a castle. Also, perhaps because of the strong image of Togetsukyo Bridge, the name Tsukimibashi for an iron bridge seems more original than the design. However, both then and now, there are also voices saying that this design is good. This is just my personal opinion, but I quite like this bridge. When the bridge was completed, the castle tower of Okayama Castle had not yet been restored, so it was a hopeful departure. However, the appearance has deteriorated quite a bit, so I think it would be about time to repaint it. In any case, I thought that there is no shortage of bridge topics around Kyobashi and Asahikawa. Now that we’ve finished our discussion, we arrived at the opposite bank. There are several shops lined up near the entrance on the south side of Korakuen. Today, I decided to go into one of them. It’s located along the river and is called “Jomi Chaya”. Inside, there are tatami rooms and zaisu chairs, and it has a relaxing, Japanese atmosphere. You can see Tsukimi Bridge and Okayama Castle that we just crossed. When I eat while sightseeing, I often remember a quick meal at a place like this. I ordered hand-stretched udon noodles that I could eat right away. It was a little cold, so I guess it was best to have something warm. This is a traditional udon that has been passed down since the Edo period in Kamogata, Bitchu. Some of the noodles are flat. The dough is stretched and aged without being cut with a knife. It’s delicious, soft and chewy. The flat part at the tip is called “bachi” and is made by sticking it to the stick used for hand-stretching. It has a different texture from Sanuki udon and Inaniwa udon. It goes down smoothly and goes down smoothly. Okayama and Kagawa are said to be suitable for wheat cultivation because they have little rain and are warm. In addition, salt can be produced in the Setouchi area, so it was easy for other noodle industries such as somen to develop. Onsen eggs are also a nice addition to udon. Nearby, people who were working and had finished their plans for the day were talking about what to eat in the evening. I finished my meal thinking that everyone enjoys eating out when traveling. Well, it started raining… Since Japan’s Three Great Gardens are right there, I decided to go in. This is my first time entering from this side, but I think I prefer the view that spreads out at the moment you enter from the main gate. I’m going back to Okayama Station now, so I passed the garden on my way to the bus stop. Wow, it was really nice. I was really thinking of just taking a quick look … But the atmosphere inside the garden was surprisingly good, and I enjoyed it quite a bit lol. I even had some matcha and sweets to relax. This is the tea room of a shop inside the garden called “Sazanami Chaya”. It’s a place where you can drink tea while looking outside, and there was no one there, so I had it all to myself. Of course, the cherry blossoms are blooming, but I didn’t think Korakuen would be this good in the rain… Plus, the history of Korakuen is quite interesting. It would be a waste to be satisfied with Japan’s Three Great Gardens. For those who are going to Korakuen for now. It would be interesting to read the historical overview written on the Korakuen website. It seems that this area has been well maintained in line with the changes in Okayama Castle and Korakuen. Okay, then I’ll take a bus from the main gate back to Okayama Station! The rain had its good points. If you go out, you might find something you wouldn’t find on a sunny day. Now, I’ll get my work done and then. Enjoy some delicious food again in the evening. Well, today’s plans have been completed without any problems. I’m going to go eat dinner, which I’m looking forward to right away. The first place I went to was a restaurant called “Sakai-ya Honten”. First, I thought I’d try some delicious Okayama food at a popular izakaya. Well, I looked at the menu right away… Basically, there are no prices written. I’m a little scared of my wallet lol, but today I ordered this 5-item omakase. And for drinks, I found something that is typical of Okayama. I was interested in the Okayama Shimizu White Peach Highball. I’ll start by toasting with it. Yes, it’s delicious and refreshing. I wonder if the appetizer is a tuna salad? Even so, it was really crowded, and some people who came later were turned away. Wow, looking up, it was something impressive. I think it’s the first time since Osaka that I’ve had a drink under close observation lol. Wow, this looks delicious! Over here is bluefin tuna, shrimp, striped horse mackerel, and wild flounder. Then there’s sea bream, squid, oyster shell, and sea urchin – a gorgeous display. Let’s start with the bluefin tuna… It’s so delicious, so rich… Of course, the other fish are sure to be great too. The flounder is also delicious. Of these, my favorite is probably striped horse mackerel. I love the elastic texture that only striped horse mackerel has. The peony shrimp is also shiny. It’s irresistibly sweet. With the sticky squid. I also tried the crunchy oyster shell. The golden-eyed snapper is also beautiful with a slight pink color. They said to eat it with salt. Ahh, so delicious… this is the best. I want to savor this slowly. The last dish is sea urchin, and I think it conveys the fluffy texture well. This has a great color. It’s sweet… This was also a happy taste as expected. And speaking of Okayama, there is a fish that hasn’t appeared yet. Yes, I also ordered salted Spanish mackerel separately. It wasn’t on the assortment, so I tried to add it, but they put it in the five dishes. Spanish mackerel has become my favorite. Wow, I’m so glad I ordered it… It’s delicious… It has a good aroma and is very fatty. You have to savor this slowly… Actually, just the other day, when I went on a business trip to Kyoto, I ate Spanish mackerel, which I thought was the best thing I’ve ever eaten in my life. This is just as delicious. And after enjoying the exquisite Spanish mackerel, the next treat came. White-grilled eel, this is also the epitome of luxury. Its face is a little scary… And I ordered another Okayama Shimizu white peach highball, which was really delicious. This… This is also extremely delicious… I think this eel is really tasty. It’s today’s special ingredient. Sometimes I go to an eel restaurant, but I always get kabayaki, and I don’t really eat shirayaki. When I eat such delicious eel, I want it regularly, it’s so luxurious lol. It’s well-cooked and has a good elasticity. It’s a shame to see it all gone… And next up is this. It’s a large steamed clam in sake, and it has an extraordinary presence in the middle. It came out at a perfect time. Ah, it’s so good… The soup is rich and flavorful, and the clam broth is great. No matter what I eat, it’s delicious. And I salvaged the clams. I got the extra large ones. They’re plump and satisfying. And when I asked for a sake menu, they said I could choose whatever I wanted. This is fun too, I guess Okayama sake is the best? I chose “Sanzen Kaori Junmai Ginjo Genshu”. It looks like a summer sake, but if this restaurant has chosen it, you can’t go wrong. And this is the last of the five omakase dishes. It’s crab. It’s crab with Tosa vinegar jelly. It’s delicious. It’s soft and has a rich flavor. And it’s sake. It’s a fruity sake, so it’s easy to drink. Oddly enough, it’s a refreshing set that seems to anticipate summer. It was humid during the day, so this is a good way to end the day. I’m already happy enough to have enjoyed the food that allows you to fully taste the crab, but… There’s one last dish that I’m interested in… I ordered egg on rice. When it’s such a delicious restaurant, it’s hard not to be curious. I first heard about it as a variety called “Yumeo” from Fujihashi Shoten in Hyogo Prefecture. There is an event called “Egg on Rice Festival” where brand eggs from all over the country are gathered and compared. Yumeo has won the grand prize for the last three years in a row out of the four competitions that started in 2019. This is the king of egg on rice, so we can only look forward to it. This is miso soup with plenty of yellow chives, typical of Okayama. The color is amazing, it’s like they’ve poured some kind of sauce on it that’s not just egg. It’s delicious ! It’s as rich as I expected. The yolk is so thick that it’s hard to believe it’s a raw egg. You can directly taste the egg, is this the winning taste? And I forgot, but the miso soup too. The yellow chives are also delicious, this set could be a candidate for the last supper. Even so, it was delicious… Every dish was outstanding, and the salted Spanish mackerel and the white-grilled eel were especially delicious. I ate it all leisurely, remembering the taste of the food I had. Ah, it was delicious… I walked in, but it seems like it’s better to make a reservation. By the way, the bill was about 10,000 yen, which was a lot more lavish than usual. If I’m going to splurge, I want to eat something delicious! I got something that exceeded my expectations. Now, shall we go to the next restaurant! But first, that place? I wanted to stop by a place. I came to a place called “Margo Deli Tamachi Branch”. This is a fresh juice stand that has been in business in Okayama for over 20 years. It seems that they also have a store in Oji-ga-dake, which has a great view and where I’m going to go tomorrow. I bought Teshima lemon juice (500 yen). I was also considering buying strawberry juice from Okayama, but I wanted something refreshing to drink after drinking. This also refreshed my mouth as expected. I don’t usually drink that much lemon juice, but today it stings. The atmosphere inside the store is cheerful, from the interior to the music. If this store was nearby, I would be excited to become a regular. The name “Margo” comes from the name of the company Marugo Rubber, which had a store here. I enjoyed the perfect juice to sober up, thank you for the meal! If I have the chance to go again, I’d like to try the extra rich juice next time. Anyway, the next store is about 15 minutes away from the previous store. It was an interesting store, so I decided to walk there. There it is, that shop. It’s in Sennichi Center Street. There’s a charming atmosphere that seems to attract locals. I came to a ramen shop called “Butamatsu”. The atmosphere inside the shop is relaxing. And the menu has a lot of interesting ramen. What flavor is this light and delicious ramen? And I ordered a beer (620 yen). It’s rare to drink at a ramen shop, but sometimes I do. I just sobered up. I also ordered a small bowl, which I’m not sure was a free service or an appetizer. It was delicious and well chilled. The bean sprouts were seasoned to go well with the beer, maybe a little spicy? I had just finished the beer and the small bowl. This also looked delicious. I also ordered the egg roll, which is the shop’s signature dish (400 yen). The delicious steaming rice with mayonnaise was a perfect visual. It was so soft and jiggly, and the half-cooked inside was irresistible. It seemed bigger than I thought, so I cut it and ate it again. It ‘s delicious… as you can see, it’s very creamy. It goes really well with beer too. It has a slightly sweet and gentle taste, and best of all it’s warm. The sweet egg roll and the salty mayonnaise are the best. I feel so full I could go home now lol. But while I was relaxing and drinking, knowing that the main event was yet to come. Here it comes. The “Butamatsu Ramen” (850 yen), named after the restaurant. Kamaboko is unusual. Oh, I can understand this one too… As expected, it is rich, just as you can see. It has a miso flavor with a slightly spicy finish. It’s quite rich, but the taste makes me hungry. The pork slices are soft and melt in my mouth. The kamaboko fish cake is also delicious with the soup. And at this point, I want to eat tamagoyaki. The miso soup goes well with it. A lot of people around me ordered Tonmatsu ramen. It’s quite a hearty ramen to finish off a meal. I finished it in no time, along with the locals. I’m so full… I’m starting to get sleepy. So, I ate the ramen, but there was one more shop that caught my eye. I went back to Okayama Station. This coffee shop is called “Pipuru”. This shop has a retro atmosphere in the middle of the downtown area, and it seems to attract people every night. I’ll end my day here with a coffee (480 yen). I also ordered a waffle (530 yen). It’s delicious and comforting. It’s been a while since I’ve had a freshly baked waffle. I love sweet and salty foods. The crust is crispy and delicious, so it’s light and I could eat several. Even late at night, the restaurant is quite lively and has a diverse clientele. There are two groups of locals and two groups of Japanese and foreign tourists in the restaurant that can accommodate about 10 people. The owner talks to everyone in a friendly manner, and sometimes the customers become one. I was also told about tourist spots, and it seems that there are still many hidden gems in the northern part of Okayama. He also told me that the yogurt soft serve is delicious and I should try it next time. Since I was there, I ordered more lol. This is a strawberry topping (680 yen). I couldn’t eat it just now. The portion was generous and fit into a large mug. Ah, this is delicious. It’s refreshing and I can eat it all, and the strawberries go perfectly with it. It’s too many calories at night, but it’s too late now lol. I’ll eat it all without worrying about it. Come to think of it, I’ve ended my night in Okayama with something sweet before. Once again, I was able to enjoy an interesting coffee shop that was bustling until late into the night. Okay, let’s go back to the inn. It was a long day. That’s all for now. Thank you for watching until the end. I look forward to seeing you again next time. Please also see the next video!

  1. Your travels are always exciting to watch! Your Japan travel videos are the best, so I'm looking forward to the next one.

  2. Wow I was just researching about Okayama. Thank you very much for the video. I can't wait to visit Korakuen garden!

  3. Thank you, as always! 😊 Very informative! ❤ lovely Japan!

Looking forward to your next video! 😊

  4. "I'm a little scared of my wallet" (酒囲屋本店) How common is it for a menu NOT to show prices? Is it rude to ask?

  6. The cafe at the end feels like a hug that wraps me around after a long tiring day. Thank you so much for taking me along again today! 🤓❤️

  7. Thanks for the video. BTW, the auto translation for that first shop calls it "Yamachin", but the actual name is "Sanchin". Since it's a different reading of the same kanji, I can understand how it made such a mistake. Okayama has so many good places to eat. Next time, you might want to try the Hokancho area. After many years of decline, new places are opening and it's becoming vibrant again.

  8. @ 36:39 Butamatsu! I first went to this place over 30 years ago. I like the Showa-era atmosphere of this place, even though it opened in the last year of that period. This was a great place to meet up with friends on a weekend night.

  9. Did you remove the Japanese subtitles on your videos? I'm learning Japanese, so I found them helpful.
