Ceri (Lazio), Italy【Walking Tour】History in Subtitles – 4K
[Drone intro🌐] [Walking tour begins👣Piazza Immacolata⛲] 1 – 6
[⛪Santuary of Our Lady of Ceri⛪]
The church has very ancient origins. It is said to have been initially dedicated to the Virgin Mary and, around 370 AD, to Saint Felix II, a local martyr. 2 – 6
The central nave features a cosmatesque floor and, in 1365, a ciborium was built beside the second pillar to house the relics. It was adorned with a beautiful altarpiece showing Saint Felix enthroned. 3 – 6
In the left-side chapel are 14th-century frescoes depicting the Crucifixion of Christ, the crucifixion of Saint Peter, the beheading of Saint Paul, the baptism of Jesus, and a Pantocrator surrounded by saints. 4 – 6
Around 1400, a Sienese-style painting of the Madonna of Ceri was placed above the holy water font. 5 – 6
In the 16th century, Valentino Borgia destroyed part of the building, which was replaced with three interconnected chapels decorated with 18th-century artwork. 6 – 6
In 1989, the frescoes on the right side of the nave were restored and the former Lourdes chapel was rededicated to the Madonna of Ceri. [Back to the old town👣] 1 – 12

The tuff cliff of Ceri was the site of a Bronze Age settlement, which at times also occupied the adjacent formations (numerous pottery fragments come from the Fornaci di Ceri area). 2 – 12
It was abandoned at the end of the Late Bronze Age (10th century BC) when the inhabitants converged on the large Cerveteri plateau to establish the large Villanovan and later Etruscan city of Kaisra (Caere to the Romans). 3 -12
But already in the 8th century BC, the small Ceri plateau was occupied by a thriving secondary center within the territory of the city-state of Kaisra, governed by a noble family. 4 – 12
This family used the large burial mounds built north of the village as burial sites, while tombs occupy the intermediate tuff strip of Fornaci. Of particular note is the nearby Tomb of the Statues. 5 – 12
The current village was founded in 1236 on a small settlement dating back to the 7th century, when the inhabitants of nearby Caere (Cerveteri) abandoned it to move to a better-defended location. 6 – 12
They named the new center Caere Novum (now simply Ceri), to distinguish it from the ancient city, Caere Vetus (now Cerveteri). 7 – 12
During the same period, for security reasons, the castle that dominates the village was built. 8 – 12
Between the 13th and 14th centuries, Ceri was ruled by the Roman Norman family of Trastevere, later becoming the property of some of Rome’s most important families. 9 – 12
Families such as the Anguillara, the Cesi, the Borromeo, the Odescalchi, and finally the Torlonia, who sold the castle to other owners. 10 – 12
In 1503, the city was besieged and conquered by Cesare Borgia to capture members of the Orsini family who lived there. 11 – 12
In the town’s main square stands the Church of the Madonna di Ceri, on the site where the goddess Vesta was once worshipped. 12 – 12
Today the town is a very quiet and green hamlet, rarely (and unfortunately) visited by international tourism. [Very beautiful small shop🔎📸] [Via delle Stalle] […back to Piazza Immacolata…⛲] [Pretty Panorama⛺] [Via San Felice] […A small detour…👟] [Via di Ceri] [Archway entrance & Gate🏛]

Grazie

Ceri is a beautiful little town. I loved the drone footage. It showed how really tiny the town really is 😅The inside of the church was my favorite as usual.
