日本最“不吉利”的村?!😱 整條村都是古墳,名字還叫「明日香」,卻是我們最想留下的地方 | 奈良 Nara, Asuka Village

In Nara, there’s a village called Asuka Village The name sounds poetic and picturesque But if you understand Cantonese, you might not be able to hold back a laugh Yeah, imply “tomorrow will smell nice (dead)”, um… not very auspicious 🤣 And what’s this place most famous for? It’s the many ancient tombs! There are lots of “people” inside, quite spooky We don’t know much about ancient tombs or history But we unexpectedly fell in love with this place Come along with us to take a look What exactly captured our hearts Making it an unforgettable stop on this Japan trip I absolutely love this place! What are you doing at Asuka Station? To see Asuka Riding a bike to see Asuka What are you doing? We’ve arrived at Asuka’s tourist center This Info Center has lots of these (booklets) Look, I’ve turned into an Asuka person Do you like this outfit? Let me change into another one for you to see Do you like this outfit? You don’t like it? I’ll change into another one Enough, enough, enough Do you like this one? The blue one is nice Go-shujin-sama (master) Hmm Is go-han ready? (Is the meal ready?) Breakfast? Breakfast, GO! Ikimasu (Let’s go!) There are also some tourist maps here Asuka Kingdom When you come to Asuka Kingdom, if you have this passport You can get discounts What kind of discounts? Everyone, take a look here It seems if you visit Ishibutai Tomb The original entry fee of 300 yen Becomes 250 yen If you visit the Asuka Historical Museum It’s 350 yen reduced to 250 yen If you visit these few places Look at how much you save Some are 100 yen cheaper Some are 50 yen cheaper Some are only 30 yen cheaper If you come by car Parking also gets some discounts So, you can decide for yourself if it’s worth buying this 100-yen Asuka Pass It’s time for our breakfast Really piping hot This must be the charcoal-roasted coffee with an extra 50 yen Only 50 yen 50 yen So hot It has a charcoal-roasted flavor A bit bitter But also slightly sour Quite fragrant Look at this Wow, there are gemstones, look Do you like gemstones? Try one and see what’s different? Not very sweet candy Cane sugar Maybe Cane sugar, brown sugar, something like that Delicious The bread is toasted crispy Sausage with some sauce A mix of several sauces And some pickled vegetables or something Look, there are actually a lot of ingredients here They’ve added their own special pickles So it’s not dry The seasoning is just right This is pretty tasty And some ham Try the salad Fresh salad With some salad dressing It’s like sesame dressing Very fragrant Mashed Potato Actually, this isn’t mashed potato It’s got potatoes, salad, radish, things like that Very delicious Really tasty Do you like this steaming hot coffee? We’ve been talking for so long, and the coffee is still steaming A bit sour, roasted bean coffee Try this chocolate flavor, see what’s different Not as deeply roasted Smoother, less sour Thick-cut bread This is the Danish toast set Crispy, fragrant, soft Buttery flavor You can add more butter Margarine Margarine is like imitation butter Some things taste better with butter Though this margarine isn’t particularly fragrant This orange is really red Very sweet Smooth-tasting orange It’s easy to eat, goes down well Unlike other tangerines or oranges with a strong pulpy texture Even the oranges here are tastier, right? I think this isn’t an ordinary orange Since today’s plan is to cycle around the village Of course, we need to buy some snacks for the road This Farmer’s Market is just perfect Asuka Village specialty Did you pick out any oranges? I don’t know Where is this? This is the Asuka supermarket This supermarket is pretty nice Lots of fruits, fresh vegetables Fresh greens So big They even have ancient rice There’s ancient three-colored rice here Red rice Green rice Black rice Three-colored rice I actually think it’s pretty fun to shop here And Japanese sweets And Western pastries And bread Thick-cut bread And freshly squeezed orange juice Electric bike, electric-assist bicycle Do you know how to operate an electric-assist bicycle? You have to pedal a few times Right, after you turn on the power assist It helps you pedal with less effort No vroom, no need to press the throttle So it feels a bit safer Otherwise, the ones that accelerate suddenly would scare me Alright, after renting the e-bike, let’s go! What are we doing here? Eating… Aska? What’s it called? Asuka orange Asuka tangerine Not an orange, it’s a tangerine Asuka tangerine Slightly sweet tangerine Juicy, but with a lot of pulp Not the same orange we ate this morning That was an orange, this is a tangerine Our first stop is a small park Kinrin Park There’s a temple next to the park, and a historical site next to the temple After the historical site, we’ll head to a major historical site Asuka Village It’s like a museum full of historical sites A natural museum The birthplace of Japan OK? Yeah What are you doing squatting by that little house? Taking photos of wildflowers and grass Strictly speaking, Asuka Village isn’t “the birthplace of all of Japan” It’s known as “the origin of ancient Japanese civilization” This village is so refreshing! It’s truly relaxing and uplifting Time is short We need to head to the next stop Isn’t my rhyming pretty cool? Cherry blossoms on the first and second days First cherry blossoms? New cherry blossoms (?) I guess they should be blooming today Asuka Village was, during Japan’s Asuka period (592–710 AD) The location of the imperial court Its charm lies in walking through the village It’s like stepping into a Japanese pastoral poem woven with history Oh, so this is their village Lots of “people” inside, pretty spooky Really? Welcome to my village Like my new estate? The villagers in your new estate seem a bit… A rundown village is cheaper Is it? This village has no high-rise buildings, perfect for walking or cycling Slow-paced travel And it preserves a large number of Asuka-period relics and tombs A treasure trove of early Japanese civilization And now we’ve arrived at this experience center Dedicated to showcasing and explaining the history and murals of the Kitora Tomb Do you like neko-chan (little kitty)? Kitora Tomb Mural Experience Center Walking inside feels like passing through a time tunnel Do you like this museum? There’s a ball outside That ball is the tomb, and there’s a hole inside The coffin is inside Inside the tomb is that sandwich-like (?) coffin Sandwich?? Inside the coffin there’s… Why a sandwich? It’s square, isn’t it? There’s a mural inside So beautiful Tomb Maybe the coffin is here Azure Dragon Vermilion Bird South White Tiger Why does this White Tiger look so much like a dragon? Black Tortoise, the turtle The turtle is in the north Look how beautiful the stamp I made is Look at the one you made Oh no Don’t do that, don’t do that There are different shapes of tombs Square tombs Octagonal ones too These are the Four Gods This dragon has faded Azure Dragon Vermilion Bird in the south White Tiger in the west Black Tortoise on the north wall The four walls have these Four Gods It’s like a touch screen It really is a touch screen And this looks like the Big Dipper or something This is on the ceiling Doo doo doo doo doo This is it The Big Dipper Actually, it’s not just the Big Dipper All the stars are painted How many years ago was this made? What was it painted with? How could they paint it so beautifully? This tiger actually looks a bit like a dragon It’s particularly long Black Tortoise, the turtle And there’s a snake attached to it Snake head The snake and turtle together Star map on the four walls This is the north side This is Japan’s oldest surviving astronomical chart So cool Amazing Even we, who don’t study history, can understand it We’re so great The life of ancient people Lifestyle of the immigrants Iron casting (Colorful Four Gods diagram) Across the street is the entrance to the museum Visit Visit the museum After visiting, you’ll come out from the other side of the road That hill behind should be the location of the tomb Let’s head to the observation deck first Eat an orange This observation deck looks pretty nice This picture shows the stone materials used to build the Kitora Tomb They came from these places Do you like this view? Not bad, cool breeze and cold water Japanese sweets bought at the supermarket It feels like even bought casually here tastes better than in Nara city Really? Better than that famous shop? That famous shop, somehow, the mochi skin was so tough Maybe they like that texture there This skin, though not amazing Is still softer than that famous shop’s They sell it for the textured quality Guess I don’t know how to appreciate it Yeah, you just prefer this one Looking at this scenery Does eating Japanese sweets feel great? Vast mountains and rivers, eating Japanese sweets Later, we’ll have another tangerine Look how beautiful this village is, with this observation deck There’s a canola flower garden here Do you like it here? Not bad, very pretty, very comfortable The cycling paths are wide and plentiful Cycling here is really nice, great for beginners Lots of attractions, lots of restrooms Every attraction has plenty of restrooms (is that the point?) If you don’t go into the museum to see You’ll only see a ball on this hillside That’s it This is actually a real tomb This is the historical site here The original tomb Destiny (?) Special historical site Kitora Tomb What we saw in the museum earlier was this In Asuka Village, history isn’t just words in a book It’s three-dimensional It’s like having a conversation with the Asuka period across a thousand years Spring in Asuka Village is the season of blooming canola flowers and cherry blossoms Cycling leisurely through the countryside is really poetic We’ve arrived at a Rice Terrace Inabuchi Tanada Terrace What’s here? It’s not the rice season now So it just looks barren All harvested Up the hill, up the hill! Giant scarecrow Konnichiwa So big! Enjoy this little village Is that a cherry blossom tree over there? With some yellow canola flowers So beautiful! Do you feel the same? For us, having each other’s company Looking at the scenery, eating something, chatting casually Is a very happy thing Picnic under the cherry blossom tree Do you like cycling here? Are you scared? A little bit (oh deer’s cycling skills need improvement) Go! Go! What’s this? A cave historical site in the middle of a rice field Wow, there’s really a stone box Is this another tomb? Yeah, it’s square As we walked, we arrived at one of Asuka Village’s most famous landmarks Ishibutai Tomb This isn’t an ordinary tomb It’s Japan’s largest square stone chamber tomb This entire tomb is built with massive rocks The largest one… weighs 75 tons! But after over a thousand years of wind and rain the soil on top has been washed away So it became the “open-air stone chamber” we see now Do you like this reizōko? Reizōko?? What’s a reizōko? A refrigerator (I’m applying what I learned) Don’t you think it’s a bit cold? Indeed, inside this stone chamber, it feels like being in a cave especially cool Earlier, there was a stone tomb in the rice field Now there’s a stone tomb in the park The tomb was here before the park It developed quickly They built a park next to the tomb And lots of cherry blossoms Ishibutai, giant rocks How did people a thousand years ago move these giant rocks here? Stone tail Stone Take us to see the stone The stone of the stone Wow, doesn’t this look like a turtle? Stone (stone head) The tomb is inside here We just went in from here Wow, this observation deck has lots of cherry blossoms Are the cherry blossoms prettier or the scenery? The scenery is pretty, and the cherry blossoms are too Just not enough sunlight Stop complaining It’s already good that it’s not raining This spot only requires a bit of effort (climbing stairs) It’s free Lots of big cherry blossoms Kirei ne (So beautiful) 4:50pm, we’re back to return the bikes Ten minutes to go or we’ll be late Tough, huh Good thing we made it in time So, do you prefer the electric bike or a regular bike? Electric The extra 500 yen is worth it Because there are hills here Right, once you turn on the electric assist, it pushes you up the hill instantly When you’re struggling to pedal, turn on the power and bam It gives you a boost, a leg up Like taking an elevator No matter how steep the road, that bike can handle it We passed through a residential area earlier That slope was so steep, I thought we wouldn’t make it Turn on the power, and up we went We didn’t even use turbo mode I saw there’s a turbo switch setting Really? High performance Really? Yeah Why didn’t you try it? Because we didn’t need to, we made it up You press it when you can’t make it Maybe you’d go up really fast You might overshoot if you’re not careful Do you like this… What’s this place called again? Asuka Asuka, this place Asuka Suka (Malay for “like”) Asuka Wow, this is really I love it so much ~ I think there are too many attractions, it takes a lot of time And now the cherry blossoms aren’t even in full bloom When they’re in full bloom cycling along with all the cherry blossoms would be super pretty! I think this village is really comfortable It’s a pity this place is so big One day isn’t enough Unless you rush through everything Don’t linger too long at each spot Don’t relax and rest there We didn’t even have time for lunch Right, no time for lunch Just snacks on the go Alright, it was worth it! Today’s itinerary was great! Special ramen Tsukemen dipping noodles Big head Do you like wearing this paper apron to eat noodles? Very ceremonial I don’t know if this ramen is good I’ve noticed Japanese ramen Has so many different styles, right? Right, the noodles are different at every shop Not standardized Udon seems more uniform Five pieces of chashu 70% rich-flavored broth But still 30% refreshing It smells so good It’s probably a pork bone broth Slightly firm, chewy noodles Feels a bit like pasta that’s not fully cooked So it’s very chewy But I’d prefer it a bit softer Then soak it in the broth longer There’s a bamboo shoot This bamboo shoot is thick and delicious Chashu You bite into meat and some fat I smell a flavor, a fragrant pork taste The yolk is very red Tea-marinated egg The egg is OK, it passes I really appreciate their chashu Big pieces and delicious Really tasty! My head fits through perfectly, not a big head Hehe Yo, look at this Wow, this thick broth I feel like these noodles have a bit of a soba vibe Dip it in the broth Delicious! Is it the broth or the noodles that’s good? The noodles are smooth The broth isn’t too salty So fragrant Very flavorful Mmm, really delicious Try this chashu Should be the same Let’s see if it’s as good as you say Dip it in the broth (Satisfied expression) This chashu is still pink and tender Mmm, delicious There’s another piece of meat in the broth This might be the meat used to make the broth Tastes like roasted meat Like roasted meat, very fragrant Very flavorful Wow, awesome! I really like this bowl of ramen, delicious! Good thing we came early When we left, there was a line outside The entire train car has only one person So empty (Too many seats, don’t know where to sit) There’s another passenger Do you like playing so late that the train is empty? Actually, it’s still early, not even 7 p.m. Hope you, like us, also love Asuka Village See you next time! Let’s go inside the house to take a look It’s quite low Today’s blue sky and white clouds The weather is great Oh, don’t move Oooooh ~ Cherry blossoms and Asuka Is it Akusa? What’s Akusa? Asaka? Asaku? Aska? Asuka? Asaka Asuka Asuka! (Finally got it right) I’m eating I’m still sucking on that candy Stop chattering
