I’m responsible for the systematization, promotion, and teaching of our k’o-ssu craftsmanship. I am also a successor of Taiwan’s k’o-ssu craftsmanship. Basically, if you search for “k’o-ssu” online now and you see information on a traditional Chinese website, it’s probably what I wrote. K’o-ssu is the process of turning threads into fabric. Embroidery is the process of adding threads to an existing fabric for embellishment. The two are different. There are many textile techniques in the world. But the k’o-ssu craftsmanship you’re seeing is one of the most unique techniques in this field. To this day, k’o-ssu cannot be replaced by machines. It can only be made by hand. The reason is its production principle: “passing warp, broken weft.” This means the warp threads run continuously, while the weft threads are broken along the outlines of the pattern. This allows us to weave a pattern or a character directly. This allows us to weave a pattern or a character directly. During the Song dynasty, a historian named Zhuang Chuo mentioned in his book, “Jilei Bian,” “When you hold it up to the light, it looks like it’s been carved.” What he meant was that if you look at it under the light, you’ll notice that the outlines have tiny gaps, as if they were carved with a knife. The earliest character for “k’o” was the one for “carve.” Then, during the middle and late Song dynasty, a new character appeared, the one you see now, with the “silk” radical and the “revolution” character. It can achieve the effect of ink penetrating through paper. This one is a classic Taiwanese technique called “half k’o-ssu.” As the name suggests, it only takes half the time of a normal k’o-ssu to complete. This technique, compared to traditional Chinese k’o-ssu, is more focused on practicality. It’s also more suitable for use on clothing. Master Huang Lan-yeh basically represents all of Taiwan’s k’o-ssu. Basically, all the textile systems were created by her. She has developed so many new techniques, more efficient methods, and more personalized ways of expression. and more personalized ways of expression. They reduce the difficulty of k’o-ssu. Cultural and artistic preservation must start from being fun. Children want to do it, but our previous looms were too big, so the master specially designed some smaller ones so that children around six years old can come and experience the fun of weaving for themselves. For tourists and visitors, our beginner’s class is a simpler one. It’s a coaster based on plain weaving. This is a project that can be completed in just 30 minutes. Of course, for repeat customers, we can also offer a slightly more advanced class, challenging them with more special weaves. For example, this one is a twill weave. Everyone is welcome to come and experience it. It will help you understand the core operating principles of the loom, and you’ll be able to weave your own creation. The art of weaving, in the past, was something very closely related to our daily lives. But in this era, most people are unfamiliar with looms. Most people in Taiwan basically associate textiles with aboriginal weaving. But our technique is relatively rare. We belong to the Han Chinese textile system. It’s related to many of our idioms. For example, in the “Ballad of Mulan,” it says, “Zhi zhi fu zhi zhi, Mulan dang hu zhi” (“Weaving, weaving, and again weaving, Mulan sits by the door and weaves.”) Or, in “The Cowherd and the Weaving Maiden,” it says, “Xian xian zhuo su shou, zha zha nong ji zhu” (“Delicate, slender hands held up, busily working the loom.”) Or, we say, “sui yue ru suo” (time flies like a shuttle). “si si ru kou” (meticulous, flawless). These idioms are all directly related to our looms. Because every visitor is a blank slate. When they come here, they truly understand what the principles of textiles are. I can basically teach you the principles of k’o-ssu in a short amount of time. I can basically teach you the principles of k’o-ssu in a short amount of time. I can only say it’s easy to learn but difficult to master. You see our looms here, they might look a bit complex, but their function is actually very simple. The core of the technique lies in our hands. This allows you a lot of room for your own creativity. Look at this classroom, you can see all the looms are for tabletop work. The warp threads on our looms here start at 2,000. The most can even go up to 4,000 or 5,000 threads. How to completely fix these warp threads on our loom, that process is already very complicated. After all the preparatory work for the loom is completed, we can then start our k’o-ssu weaving. First, you have to complete your own design. When you’re weaving, you must also follow each block to weave in different colored threads. K’o-ssu has been known since ancient times for being very time-consuming. It’s normal for a k’o-ssu piece to take one or two years to complete. Because our Master Huang Lan-yeh is a standard first-generation craft master in Taiwan. They are very skilled at doing it, but they don’t necessarily know how to teach it well. The subsequent history or the establishment of our techniques must be completed by the second and third generations. I’m sometimes responsible for decoding the master’s techniques. Decoding techniques is one of my personal great strengths. As long as it’s a k’o-ssu-related technique, I can basically look at it once and completely reproduce it. For example, this one. It’s a technique that has been lost in China, the “floral twill.” It’s one of the rarest variations of k’o-ssu. Besides being a twill weave, what’s more special is that the background twill and the pattern twill have to run in completely opposite directions. Clarifying it and turning it into our teaching system, that’s the main work I do. Our classroom is located on the B1 floor of the Observation Building at the Yilan National Center for Traditional Arts. The Yilan National Center for Traditional Arts provides a wonderful platform for all of Taiwan’s traditional arts, whether it’s performing arts or craft arts. So that when every visitor comes, they don’t just look. They can do it themselves with their own hands. To me, Yilan is a place that’s very suitable for slowing down your pace. Basically, all of our art and culture start with slowing down. I recommend that everyone occasionally comes to Yilan to explore, because Yilan has a long and narrow terrain. If you go east, there’s the sea. If you go west, there are the mountains. In between, there are many museums, or places like our Yilan National Center for Traditional Arts, where everyone can come and appreciate some performing arts and craft arts. Because of these reasons, I’m going to recommend some places in Yilan that are worth visiting or places to eat some great food. First, the first one I want to recommend is the Dongshan River Eco-greenery in Yilan. You can take a big walk there and slowly experience Yilan’s wetland culture. They also offer things like water bikes. Everyone can go there and take a boat ride, and the boat owner will give you an ecological tour of the entire river. You can usually rent a bicycle at the Dongshan River. If you ride upstream for an hour, you can go directly to the source waterfall. I really recommend the flatbread there. You should buy it and just take a bite right away. The juices of the beef and the aroma of the pepper will just explode in your mouth. Menhonya is a ramen restaurant that has a very, very rich flavor. I’m a person who really likes noodles, especially ramen. But I haven’t eaten a better ramen than Menhonya yet.
