Discover the Magic of Holland’s Most Picturesque Villagе

Welcome to the Netherlands, Volendam! Volendam is a traditional fishing village located in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands. It sits on the western shore of the Markermeer lake about 20 km (12 miles) north of Amsterdam. Volendam is one of the most charming and photogenic villages in the Netherlands. You’ll see traditional houses, local fishermen’s boats, and charming streets. An atmospheric walk awaits you! Volendam began in the 14th century as a small harbor for the nearby cheese-trading town of Edam. Around 1357 Edam built a new canal to the Zuiderzee (today’s Markermeer) and moved its harbor, leaving the old harbor basin behind. Local farmers and fishermen settled there, creating a new village called “Volendam” — literally meaning “filled dam” in Dutch. For centuries Volendam remained a fishing community on the Zuiderzee, with wooden houses built close together along narrow lanes. Its isolation preserved traditional dress, customs and dialect. In the 19th and 20th century the village became a magnet for European artists inspired by the light, boats and folk costumes. the Hotel Spaander turned into a meeting place for painters. When the Zuiderzee was closed off and turned into the IJsselmeer/Markermeer in the 20th century, commercial fishing declined, but Volendam transformed into a tourist destination. Volendam sits right next to Edam, home of the famous Edam cheese; tourists can easily visit both in one day. This small fishing village produced many of the Netherlands’ biggest pop groups (BZN, The Cats), so much so that their soft pop style got its own name “Palingsound” (“eel sound”).
