Located in the heart of Nara Park, this majestic building is the Great Buddha Hall (Daibutsuden) of Tōdai-ji Temple — one of the most significant and iconic landmarks in all of Japan.

This ancient Buddhist temple was originally built in the 8th century and houses the world’s largest bronze statue of the Buddha Vairocana (known in Japanese as Daibutsu). The hall itself is one of the largest wooden buildings in the world — a stunning architectural feat considering its age!

But that’s not all — the temple is surrounded by the peaceful and scenic Nara Deer Park, where hundreds of free-roaming deer wander the grounds. Considered sacred messengers of the gods in Shinto belief, these deer are surprisingly friendly — and they’ll even bow if you offer them special deer crackers (shika senbei)!
