道の駅奥永源寺渓流の里 滋賀県東近江市。室町時代から続く永源寺こんにゃくと政所茶と【道の駅めぐり滋賀県】S660ドライブ

This Michi-no-Eki road trip is heading to Shiga Prefecture. There are five roadside stations left in Shiga. Our first stop is Ryuo Kagamino Sato, located in Ryuo Town. The next roadside station is… Agri Park Ryuo, also in Ryuo Town. The crepe made with Ryuo-grown strawberries was absolutely delicious. Now we’re heading to a station in Higashiomi City, upstream of the Aichigawa River— Michi-no-Eki Oku Eigenji Keiryū-no-Sato. Let’s get going. We’ll probably be driving through the mountains ahead. The weather is perfect today, so we’re opening the roof and enjoying the drive. We’ll drive with the roof open until the next station. Driving with the top down means you’ll get sunburned… …and my wife will get mad at me. The next roadside station is quite a distance away. We’re heading to Oku Eigenji Keiryū-no-Sato. We’ll be going close to the border between Shiga and Mie Prefectures. The two roadside stations in Ryuo… …have spacious parking lots, and both are large in scale. Agri Park Ryuo is an experience-based station. You can enjoy fruit picking and other activities there. You can’t do that at Ryuo Kagamino Sato, but there are tourist attractions just nearby. Ryuo Kagamino Sato is the place where Minamoto no Yoshitsune held his coming-of-age ceremony. There are many things to enjoy around the station. Both were excellent roadside stations. When you drive with the roof down, sunscreen is a must. If you don’t use it, you’ll get burned. Your skin ends up in bad shape. I thought we’d be driving through the mountains, but we’re still in town. I didn’t care about sunburns when I was younger. But now that I’m older… Sunburns really make me worry about spots and wrinkles. So I try to avoid getting sunburned as much as possible. If I haven’t applied sunscreen, I don’t open the roof. It feels so refreshing. With the roof open, you can really sense the smells and fresh air—it’s great. Driving with the top down in spring is amazing. This might be the best season for open-top driving. You can’t help but smile. It’s so peaceful and relaxing. We’re now entering Hino Town. We’re currently driving on Prefectural Route 524. Now we’ll be driving along National Route 307. We’ve entered Higashiomi City. We’ll turn right at this intersection and leave Route 307. I’m just following the iPhone GPS. We should be entering the mountainous area from here. It looks like it’ll take about 20 minutes to reach the next roadside station. The road continues to feel really nice. The next stop is Oku Eigenji Keiryū-no-Sato. The local junior high school even has “Eigenji” in its name. Looks like we’re almost at the roadside station. It’s located upstream along the Aichigawa River. The cherry blossoms are beginning to bloom. We’re getting closer and closer to the mountains. There’s a sign warning of icy roads ahead—winter tires required. But I think summer tires are fine for now. The air gets colder as we climb into the mountains. “Eigenji Station Restaurant” On the way to the roadside station, we spotted Eigenji Temple. Eigenji is the head temple of the Eigenji branch of Rinzai Zen Buddhism, located in Higashiomi City, Shiga. It was founded over 650 years ago by Zen Master Jakushitsu Genko. The temple grounds are surrounded by the rich nature of the Suzuka Mountains. It’s incredibly peaceful and calming. In autumn, it’s especially popular for its beautiful fall foliage. Eigenji is also famous for its konnyaku (yam cake). It originally started as a part of monks’ vegetarian meals. It has a firm texture and a rich flavor. I’m hoping to find some Eigenji konnyaku at the upcoming roadside station. There’s still some snow left on the mountain peaks. It was very cold a few days ago— —so it probably snowed around the day before yesterday. The Aichigawa River is flowing on the left side. We’re pretty far upstream now. To the left is a dam. It’s the Eigenji Dam. That’s the Eigenji Dam. The temperature has dropped by about 2°C. The scenery is beautiful. There’s a dam reservoir here. Looks like they’re working on widening the road. This tunnel is pretty narrow. Aren’t you cold? There’s still snow on the ground. Wow, that’s amazing. The temperature has dropped to 12°C. We’re about two minutes away from the roadside station. Only about 2 kilometers left to go. There’s a sign saying the roadside station is 1 km ahead. Masudokoro Tea Eigenji Mushroom Center I wonder if mushrooms are famous here? Seems like there are campgrounds around here too. And the river is beautiful. I think I saw that iwana (char) is a local specialty here. This might be the roadside station. Just 300 meters to go. We should be arriving very soon. This is Michi-no-Eki Oku Eigenji Keiryū-no-Sato. Still not there yet… I can see it now. Just 10 meters ahead. We’ve now visited Michi-no-Eki Oku Eigenji Keiryū-no-Sato. This place is known for its tea… …and especially its konnyaku (yam cake). I bought some sashimi-style konnyaku to try. It’s not something I can eat right away. I’ll show it to you later. And one more thing— Masudokoro roasted tea. It’s locally grown tea packaged into tea bags. I was hoping to buy it in a bottle, but— —they didn’t have it here. So I bought the tea bags instead. I don’t know much about tea flavors, but— —I’ll share more when I get home. Earlier, I also tried— —grilled konnyaku with miso, and soft-serve ice cream made with Masudokoro tea. Both were really delicious. The soft-serve had a strong tea aroma, and the konnyaku was so fresh and juicy. The miso flavor was also rich and tasty. These two items are must-tries when you visit. Also, you can catch iwana (char) from the nearby river. This roadside station even offers stream fishing experiences. If they’re selling iwana, I also recommend trying the “dam curry.” Now, let’s head to the next roadside station. We visited Oku Eigenji Keiryū-no-Sato in Shiga Prefecture. The food options at this roadside station were excellent. One of the highlights was Masudokoro Tea from the area. Here it is—Masudokoro Tea. Masudokoro Tea… …is grown in the easternmost part of Higashiomi City, Shiga. The source of the Aichigawa River, flowing from the Suzuka Mountains into Lake Biwa. It’s a rare tea cultivated in the Oku Eigenji region. This tea has a long history. It dates back to the Muromachi period. Now let’s brew some of this tea. Here we go—Masudokoro Tea is ready. I’m not really a tea expert, but… …the aroma is incredibly pleasant. It’s slightly astringent, with a nice balance. If you enjoy tea, I highly recommend trying Masudokoro Tea. Even if you’re not a tea fan, it’s a unique taste worth experiencing. It’s a truly recommended tea, so please give it a try.
