Portofino unfolds like a natural amphitheater facing the sea. The intense blue of the Ligurian Sea blends with the green of the pines and the colors of the houses. And not only that: we will also talk about famous people who made Portofino their secret vacation spot. From Hollywood stars to European aristocrats, everyone fell in love with this picturesque port. Now we descend the Scalinata al Faro, a staircase that will lead us to one of Portofino’s most iconic corners. 🌊✨ The steps are worn, evidence of centuries of footsteps by sailors, tourists, and locals. Our next stop will be where seafaring life and the glamour of Portofino come face to face. ⚓✨ This pier is named after King Umberto I of Italy and is the backbone of Portofino life. Everything from small fishing boats to luxury yachts owned by international stars dock here. This more intimate spot in the harbor offers another charming perspective of Portofino. 🌊✨ Brightly colored houses, painted in shades reminiscent of the sun, the sea, and Ligurian life. Here, everything moves to the rhythm of the waves: the clinking of the masts is almost background music. Can you imagine? Centuries ago, this port served small fishing boats; today, it receives vessels worth millions of euros. This pier has an almost theatrical quality: each boat that docks seems like an actor entering the scene. Cristo degli Abissi. It is a bronze statue submerged in the bay of San Fruttuoso, between Camogli and Portofino. It was placed on the seabed on August 22, 1954, at a depth of approximately 17 meters. It represents Christ with his arms outstretched in a gesture of blessing. It measures 2.5 meters in height and weighs around 600 kilograms. To reach it, visitors can opt for boat trips from here. One of the most famous treasures is pesto alla Genovese, made with fresh basil, pine nuts, Parmesan, and olive oil, served here with the classic trofie pasta. 🐟 We can’t forget the fresh fish and seafood that arrive here every morning at the port. The most popular way to visit Portofino is by boat or ferry from Santa Margherita Ligure or Rapallo, a short journey but with spectacular views. It’s also possible to get there by car, although the road is narrow and parking is limited, so many prefer to park in Santa Margherita and take a bus or boat. Another beautiful option is to walk the trails that cross the Portofino Natural Park, surrounded by forests and overlooking the sea. Every bend in the path opens up a new natural landscape, as if nature were playing to surprise us with every step. Many cruise ships stop on the Riviera and organize direct excursions to Portofino, a classic Mediterranean trip. 🛳️ If you’re coming from far away, the most practical option is to fly to Genoa, which is less than an hour away, and from there take a train, bus, or taxi to the port. ✈️ Here, the pace slows, you breathe calm, and it seems as if the Mediterranean opens up before us in all its immensity. It’s a perfect stretch to reflect, listen to the waves, and enjoy the silence, broken only by the birdsong. This Ligurian Sea is part of the Mediterranean and bathes the entire Riviera, with waters that range from navy blue to emerald green depending on the daylight. These currents keep the water clean and clear, making it a paradise for swimming, diving, and sailing. This sea has been a route of cultural and commercial exchange between Italy, France, and Spain since ancient times. In summer, these waters reach up to 25 degrees, perfect for swimming, but in winter they rarely drop below 13 degrees. We arrive at the Faro di Portofino, an iconic landmark that has watched over the entrance to the gulf for over a century. Built in 1917, its mission has been to guide sailors and protect ships entering and leaving the port. The lighthouse is fully automated today, but lighthouse keepers once lived here to keep the light burning.
