Today’s roadside station trip is heading to Shiga Prefecture. Only five roadside stations remain in Shiga. We started this journey from Ryuo Town. Our first stop was Michi-no-Eki Ryuo Kagamino Sato. Our next stop was Agri Park Ryuo, also located in Ryuo Town. The strawberry crepe made with local Ryuo strawberries was delicious. Leaving Ryuo Town, we now head into Higashiomi City. Next up is Oku Eigenji Keiryū-no-Sato. Their tea and konnyaku were both excellent. Continuing our trip, we’re heading to Aito Margaret Station, also in Higashiomi City. Time to head to the next roadside station. From here, we’re taking the same road back. Maybe there was some de-icing agent on the road. I’ll need to wash the car once I get home. Up until now, I’ve been driving with the roof open. From here on, I’ll close the roof. Once the roof is closed, it gets hot inside the car. We’re now on Route 421. Traffic is moderately busy. The water surface is sparkling beautifully. To the left is the Aichi River. We’re driving back along Route 421. I wonder if those are tea plants? Maybe not? Could be tea though. I always imagined tea farms had fans blowing over them. We’ve now left Oku Eigenji Keiryū-no-Sato, and are heading to another roadside station in Higashiomi City. Next up is Aito Margaret Station. It’s about a 30-minute drive to the next station. At the last roadside station, aside from tea… A Spyder just passed by! Near Oku Eigenji Keiryū-no-Sato, you can enjoy mountain stream fishing. There were people fishing, and there was also a trailhead for mountain climbers. They even had a parking lot just for mountain climbers. There was also a small restaurant where you order at the counter. The food looked very tasty. There was a dining area too. Everyone eating there looked like they were really enjoying it. If you visit the station, you should definitely try the food. My goal is to visit two more stations from here. If I can, I’ll try to visit both. The next station is probably located in a more urban area. Personally, I prefer roadside stations surrounded by nature. They also sell refrigerated goods at these stations. When the weather gets warmer, it’s hard to buy refrigerated food. If I were heading straight home, I could buy some cold items too. On the way here, I entered Route 421 around this area. We’re in a more urban area now. Since I’m not alone today, I won’t be eating that much. But eating a little bit of many things actually fills you up more than you expect. The road ahead is long and straight. We’re still on Route 421. We’ll soon be merging onto Route 307. Now we’re driving along Route 307. The next roadside station is located along this road. It’s Aito Margaret Station. Aito Margaret Station is set in the middle of peaceful farmland. Its European-style building really stands out. In the farmers’ market area, you can buy seasonal fruits and vegetables delivered directly by local farmers. Apparently, they have over 180 different kinds of produce. They also sell handmade gelato, scented goods, and relaxing items— lots of interesting little shops. I’m really looking forward to checking it out. We can now see the next roadside station ahead. It’s just 1.3 kilometers to Aito Margaret Station. This roadside station is one of the most popular in Shiga Prefecture. Alright, we’ve arrived. This is Michi-no-Eki, Margaret Station. Welcome to Aito Margaret Station. This station has a wide open space, with a gelato shop, fresh produce market, and a souvenir store—it’s very well-equipped. The udon restaurant was closed, though… But they do have shops like that too. Here’s what I bought at the roadside station— It’s actually my first time seeing this. The label makes it a little hard to see, but… It’s grilled Omi Shamo chicken rice, using Omi Shamo, a local Shiga specialty. It’s called “aburi shamo gohan.” I’ve never seen this food before. And I’ve never tried it either— but it looked interesting, so I decided to buy it. It kind of looks like an inari sushi. Yeah, it looks just like inari sushi. Let’s dig in. You can really taste the texture of the meat. It’s delicious. So fragrant and tasty. You can savor the rich umami of the chicken. The flavor of the meat is really rich and satisfying. They had both grilled and non-grilled versions for sale. The grilled one was especially fragrant. It’s really good. And one more item I got was popcorn. It’s not that unusual, I know… Popcorn isn’t exactly rare, but— This particular popcorn is made from corn grown right here in Higashiomi City. So it’s 100% domestic, specifically grown in Higashiomi, Shiga Prefecture. Apparently, most popcorn is made with imported corn. Only about 1% of popcorn in Japan is made from domestic corn. I’ll enjoy this popcorn once I get back home. They sell domestic popcorn too. They even sell corn specifically for making popcorn. Next is the final roadside station. Let’s head over to the last one.
