【京都おとな旅VLOG#2】初公開の文化財限定公開や京都グルメなどゆっくりと京都を巡ってきました!

Kyoto 2-Day Trip #2. Good morning. It’s the morning of my second day. I’m off to breakfast at the hotel. As expected, it was delicious. Now, I’m checking out. I’m off to Kamigamo Shrine. It’s been a while since I stayed in a lounge room. It’s still great! (^^) From here, I head to Kokusaikaikan Station on the subway. Then I go to Kitaoji Station and transfer to a bus. I arrive at Kitaoji Station. Is it Line A? It’s super easy to find. It seems like the red line will take you to the bus stop. It looks like I’ll get there quickly. From here, it’s about a 17-minute bus and walk. Is that it? Kamigamo Shrine. Officially known as Kamo Wakeikazuchi Shrine, it’s a World Heritage Site. The air is clear. This place is also open to the public. Greenery stretches out on both sides of the approach . What’s that? This is the Gaiheiden (Babaden), a temporary resting place for offerings made during religious ceremonies. It is apparently now used for events such as the Aoi Festival. A stream. Nara’s stream flows quietly through the temple grounds. Its pure stream has long been praised in waka poetry. It’s cool. The gentle murmur of the stream soothes the soul. The sacred horse stable. A white horse is dedicated here as a sacred horse. Apparently, it’s currently closed for the summer because it can’t handle the heat. Now, let’s head to the main shrine. It’s much larger than I imagined. Upon investigation, I found that it covers an area of 80,000 square meters. A mounded area. A sand dune. Sand dunes are said to represent “purification” and “barriers.” They exorcise evil spirits and symbolize a sacred space. To be precise, they’re called “tatsusuna” (standing sand). And this is the worship hall. Rebuilt by Tokugawa Iemitsu in 1628 (Kan’ei 5), it is designated an Important Cultural Property. It’s a place where worshippers offer prayers to the gods. It’s a sacred hub connecting the main shrine and the people. Rinse your hands and mouth to purify your body and mind. The water in the chozuya ( purification fountain) is drawn from the spring water of the Nara Stream that flows through the temple grounds. It is the “divine water” that springs from Mt. Kamiyama. Crossing this bridge, the Choju Bridge, is said to grant good health and longevity. Now, let’s head to the main hall. The tower gate is huge! Its vibrant vermilion color is beautiful! Records of its construction date back to the Kamakura period. The current tower gate was rebuilt between the Muromachi and Edo periods. The fortune slips are called Ichinomiya Mikuji (fortune slips), and are known as such because they are intended to grant the blessings of “Ichinomiya,” a place close to the gods. That’s the main hall. I’m going to pray. I didn’t go on a special tour, but apparently you can see the detailed architecture and decorations inside and around the main hall. There’s a cool area with wind chimes, so let’s go take a look. The area is also quite picturesque. This is Katayama Miko Shrine. This is the god of matchmaking, worshipped by Murasaki Shikibu. There are wind chimes in the river! It looks refreshing. I wish the wind would blow. The river water is cool and refreshing (^^). The wind is blowing! The refreshing sound of the wind chimes is soothing. The sound of wind chimes drives away evil spirits. They are said to be “purifying sounds” and also serve to purify the shrine. They serve coffee made with Kamiyama spring water, so let’s go and try it. It’s about a two-minute walk away. I think it’s over there. It feels like leaving the shrine for a moment. Kamiyama Spring Water Coffee. I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of coffee it is (^^). The menu looks like this. They also sell yakimochi (sweetened rice cakes). There was an eat-in space over there. There are wind chimes here too! You can enjoy coffee while listening to the sound of the wind chimes. Wow. High-powered wind chimes (^^). The yakimochi set is 700 yen. I had the Kamiyama Spring Water Coffee, and my wife had green tea. When I tried it, I was surprised to find that it was made with spring water. It was refreshing and mellow , with no unpleasant aftertaste at all. The Yakimochi was delicious with a light sweetness. The coffee brewed with Kamiyama spring water was just my taste. Next, I headed to the nearby Kyoto Prefectural Ceramic Panel Masterpiece Garden. This museum was designed by my favorite artist, Tadao Ando. It’s located right next to Kitayama Station. First, I took a bus to Kitayama Station. Oh, I just realized there’s a bus stop in front of Kamigamo Shrine ^_^;. I arrived in front of Kitayama Station. The Kyoto Prefectural Ceramic Panel Masterpiece Garden. This is a modern outdoor museum. It features huge ceramic panel paintings on concrete walls. Admission is 200 yen. It’s bare concrete. It’s a design typical of Tadao Ando. This is the world’s first outdoor painting garden. It features Monet’s “Water Lilies, Morning.” It appears to be almost life-size. The sound of the water is soothing (^^). This is “Choju Jinbutsu Giga” (Caricature of Animals and People) by Toba Sojo. It’s twice the original size in both width and height. That one! Michelangelo’s “The Last Judgment.” It looks impressive when viewed from below. There’s something like a waterfall here. It’s visually refreshing (^^). The Last Supper! Eight ceramic tile paintings are on display here. Ceramic tile is fade-resistant and suitable for outdoor exhibitions. There are flowing water features throughout. Apparently, this is to enrich the viewing experience. In keeping with Tadao Ando’s architecture, it combines concrete walls, water, and light. It creates a circular path. Enjoy different views as you walk. We’ve arrived! The Last Judgment. It’s almost original size. 1430cm x 1309cm . Michelangelo alone completed this masterpiece over six years. I’d love to see the Vatican City in person someday. The falls look even more magnificent from below. It’s great to see all the famous paintings here, but it might actually be a cool spot . Now, I’m off to Karasuma for lunch. I arrived at Karasuma-Oike Station. My next stop is Star Shokudo , a restaurant founded in 1925 and celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. They’ve just opened a new location for the first time in 66 years, so I’m going there. It ‘s a short walk from Karasuma Station. It’s easy to find, right next to Kyoto Daimaru . Star Shokudo, a Kyoto Western restaurant. Karasuma branch. Is this it? Star Shokudo was a pioneer in popularizing traditional Western restaurants in Kyoto. Apparently, it’s a return to its roots. The menu looks delicious! I ‘m looking forward to it! (^^) Retro and gorgeous! It has a retro-modern design and a luxurious feel! I was lucky that this seat happened to be available. It brings back memories. These were common in drive-ins back in the day (^^). The menu: A basic hamburger steak and fried shrimp set. It was 1,880 yen. It came with rice and soup. The main set was around 2,000 yen. From here, the dinner menu begins. Then there’s alcohol and soft drinks. And dessert. Corn potage arrived! It was topped with a layer of Miyama milk foam. I was told to stir it well. When I drank it, it was light overall. The sweetness of the corn and the mellowness of the milk were a perfect match. An elegant flavor. The tableware was stylish ( ¨̮ ). Hamburger steak and fried shrimp with demi-glace sauce. Set A was 1,880 yen. The silver tableware evoked a nostalgic feeling. It came with spaghetti Napolitana, a hamburger steak, fried shrimp, an omelette, and a salad set. The hamburger steak was topped with demi-glace sauce. There was perhaps a small amount of it. When I tried it, it was surprisingly light in flavor. It wasn’t heavy, but rather mild. I didn’t use it, though. It would probably be richer with the sauce. It might be rude to say this, but the omelet was absolutely delicious. It was perfectly soft-boiled, and you could really taste the deliciousness of the egg. I often eat omelets at hotels, and this was one of the best I’ve ever had (^^). And the fried shrimp. It had the natural texture of shrimp, and was delicious when mixed with the tartar sauce. They used good shrimp. The Neapolitan was cooked just the way I like it. Al dente. Not soggy. It was also light in flavor. I discovered something great. They gave me free ice cream when I answered the questionnaire (^^). I thought it was just a freebie, but it was chock-full of vanilla beans. It was incredibly delicious (^^). I thoroughly enjoyed the charm of Western cuisine in Kyoto (^^). Next, I went to a donut shop I’ve always wanted to try. Truffle Donuts. Kyoto Takatsuji-dori branch. I thought it might be empty. I was curious, so I looked it up. A new donut shop had just opened that day. It was about a 15-minute walk away. Today, they offered takeout. I came for the truffle donuts. Even though it was hot, they served them freshly fried. Donuts have really evolved (^^). They also had limited-time donuts. They were new products, enjoyed with dips. They had new donut experiences. Just like the ones you get at home. Truffle Plain 320 yen, Custard 300 yen, Whipped Cream 300 yen. I tried the truffle donut straight away. It was made with truffle oil and truffle salt. It tasted completely different from the donuts I usually eat. They were piping hot! I think it would have been even better in cooler weather. I tried other donuts after I got home, but the truffle donut was by far the best. Now, I’m heading to Higashi Honganji Temple. It’s a bit far from here, a 27-minute walk. Higashi Honganji Temple is the head temple of the Jodo Shinshu Honganji sect, founded by Saint Shinran. It was built in 1602 (Keicho 7) with the support of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The Miedo Gate! Rebuilt in 1911, it is the tallest wooden double gate in Japan, standing approximately 27 meters tall. I’m about to enter and climb inside. No matter how many times I visit, I’m always amazed by its sheer scale. As I get closer, I can see the black lacquered pillars and intricate carvings. I’m instantly captivated by their sheer size and beauty. Then, once I pass through the gate, the Miedo Hall, one of the largest wooden buildings in the world, comes into view. Let’s go! It’s quite high, as expected. I was able to take photos with some exceptions. I wonder how many stairs there are. How many steps are there?! Falling down these stairs would be dangerous. We’re almost there! ^_^;. From the top floor, you can enjoy a view of Kyoto city and the Higashiyama mountain range. Unfortunately, photography is prohibited inside. Inside, the guide will give you a detailed explanation of the Goei-do Gate. By the way, this is what it looks like inside. You wouldn’t notice it from below, but there is a dragon. It’s about time to go down. Going down is actually scarier. The breeze on the top floor is nice, and you can also see the historic wooden structure up close. It was a valuable experience. Now I have two stamps! (^^) I’m going to Nishiri Honten. I’m looking forward to trying the soft serve ice cream at the pickle shop! (^^) Nishiri Honten is about a 12-minute walk from here. Kyo Tsukemono Nishiri Honten. Is that it? Soft serve ice cream with sweet koji. A must-try for soft serve ice cream lovers! (^^) The sweets were on the second floor. AMACO soft serve ice cream, vanilla, matcha. Koshoji Temple! AMACO is a “sweet koji” made from rice and koji mold. It is further fermented with Labre lactic acid bacteria to create a “lactic acid fermented sweet koji.” The koji aroma is soft and gentle . The flavor of the koji spreads throughout your mouth. It’s a soft serve ice cream like nothing I’ve ever tried before. It’s about time to head to Kyoto Station. Walking through the scorching heat of Kyoto, the scenery, and the flavors I encountered have all become unforgettable memories. Thank you for watching this far. See you in the next video!
