Siem Reap is an incredible destination with a mix of history, culture, adventure, and local experiences. While it’s most famous for the Angkor temples, there’s so much more to explore in and around the town. Here’s a breakdown of the must-do activities in Siem Reap:
1. Visit Angkor Archaeological Park
Angkor Wat: The largest religious monument in the world and the most iconic of the Angkor temples. Whether you visit for sunrise or sunset, it’s a bucket-list experience.
Bayon Temple: Known for its massive stone faces, this is a fascinating temple to explore.
Ta Prohm: The temple where nature takes over. It’s the one you’ve seen in photos with tree roots growing through the stone.
Angkor Thom: The ancient city and the royal residence, featuring the famous “Gate of Angkor Thom” and the Elephant Terrace.
Preah Khan and Banteay Srei: Smaller but no less impressive temples, with detailed carvings and quieter vibes.
2. Explore Siem Reap Town
Pub Street: The heart of Siem Reap’s nightlife. Here, you’ll find an abundance of bars, restaurants, and street food stalls. It’s great for people-watching and unwinding after a day of temple-hopping.
Old Market (Psar Chaa): A bustling market where you can shop for local handicrafts, fresh fruit, spices, and souvenirs.
Night Markets: These are great for picking up unique artisan goods like silk scarves, wooden carvings, and jewelry.
Wat Preah Prom Rath: A beautiful local temple with an impressive architecture. It’s quieter compared to Angkor Wat but still offers a peaceful spiritual experience.
3. Experience Cambodian Culture
Traditional Apsara Dance: Watch a traditional Apsara dance performance. These dances have intricate movements and represent traditional Cambodian folklore. You can often see them while enjoying dinner at one of the local restaurants.
Cambodian Cooking Class: Join a local cooking class to learn how to make famous dishes like amok (a creamy coconut curry) or lok lak (beef stir fry). It’s a fun and interactive way to dive into Cambodian culture.
Angkor National Museum: If you’re interested in history and archaeology, this museum provides a deep dive into the region’s past, with well-curated exhibits on the Khmer Empire, Angkor, and more.
4. Nature and Adventure
Tonle Sap Lake: Visit the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. You can take a boat tour to see the floating villages where people live on boats and stilt houses. It’s an incredible way to experience local life.
Kulen Mountain (Phnom Kulen): A sacred mountain where you’ll find ancient carvings, waterfalls, and tranquil nature walks. It’s also the birthplace of the Angkorian Empire.
Beng Mealea: If you’re a fan of adventure, this temple is like a real-life Indiana Jones moment. It’s less crowded and more overgrown than Angkor Wat, with vines and trees taking over the ruins.
5. Relax and Unwind
Spas and Massages: Siem Reap has a variety of spas offering traditional Cambodian massages. It’s a perfect way to relax after a long day of sightseeing.
Cambodian Silk Farm: Visit the silk farms just outside of Siem Reap. You can see the whole process from cocoon to final product and buy beautiful silk products.
