Hi everyone, I’m Ah Han. Today, I’m taking you on a very special bus ride. This time, it’s really exciting. We’ll be taking two routes. The first is the Green Route, which runs along the first half of Provincial Highway 20, along the Southern Cross-Island Highway . From National Cheng Kung University Hospital in Tainan City, we’ll continue along Yongkang, Xinhua, and Zuozhen, all the way to Yujing. Then , in Yujing, we’ll transfer to Route 24, which will take you all the way to the famous Zengwen Reservoir. Before we get started, don’t forget to like, subscribe, and turn on the bell! Ready? Let’s get started! This time, we’ll be introducing more bus routes in Tainan. Last time, we introduced the Blue Route. This time, we’ll be introducing the Green Route to Zuozhen, Xinhua, and Yujing. Finally, we’ll take you to Zengwen Reservoir! Remember, before Tainan City and County merged, people relied on highway bus routes to get around Tainan County. It wasn’t until 2013 that these routes were gradually consolidated and renamed. The main routes were designated Tainan’s six major trunk lines . Starting April 1, 2013, the original Xingnan Bus routes 7605, 7606, 7607, 7608, 7609, 7610, 7611, and 7612 were merged into the current Green Trunk Line. Other sections were converted to Green Branch Lines to connect to various remote areas. The Green Trunk Line primarily runs along Provincial Highway 20, known as the “Yunan Highway.” This route runs from Tainan’s old city all the way to Yujing. Many passengers on Provincial Highway 20, like residents of Yujing and Xinhua, often travel to and from Tainan Station. And did you know? In 2024, the Green Trunk Line was the second most popular route in Tainan City. We’ll also be following the original Xingnan Bus route from Tainan to Tsengwen Reservoir. The section from Tainan to Yujing has been changed to the Green Trunk Line, and the section from Yujing to Tsengwen Reservoir has been changed to Green 24. So, when we get to Yujing, we’ll have to change buses midway. Some people who ‘ve heard of the name Yongkang probably know it from the Yongkang-Tsengwen Reservoir bus tickets . In fact, Yongkang District is the most populous administrative district in Tainan City. Because it’s not far from Tainan’s old city , transportation is quite convenient. Provincial Highway 1, Provincial Highway 20, City Road 177, City Road 180, and City Road 180A are Yongkang’s five most important arterial roads. Yongkang District was formerly known as “Puqiangtou,” meaning it was a coastal flatland with deer herds. From the Japanese era, the population was less than 20,000. In 1993, Yongkang’s population exceeded 1. It was upgraded from a city with a population of 50,000 to a limited municipality . It now has a population of 230,000. Yongkang has many schools due to its developed industry and commerce . For example, the schools along Provincial Highway 20 include National Cheng Kung University-Nanjing University of Technology and Yongkang Elementary School. The National Cheng Kung University-Nanjing University of Technology was formerly Tainan Industrial High School . Due to the declining birth rate in recent years, Tainan Industrial High School was finally affiliated with National Cheng Kung University. On August 1, 2023, it was renamed National Cheng Kung University Affiliated Tainan Industrial Senior High School. This school also has a history of 80 years. After leaving the Yongkang Industrial Zone, the Xinhua District is in front. The old name of Xinhua was “Damujiang” , which is translated from the Siraya phonetic meaning that it is close to the mountains and forests. The development record of Xinhua is actually very early. Xinhua’s old street was developed in the Japanese era. Many buildings on the old street on Zhongzheng Road have been preserved, including the Wude Hall, the Street Office, etc., and you can see the traces of history . The Green Trunk Line arrives After Xinhua, we will take a short break here for about 5 to 10 minutes before we can continue driving. Xinhua is a major transfer station. Many passengers take the Green Line or Green 17 here to Tainan’s old city. Do you know Zuozhen? In fact, Zuozhen has a long history. It is the most famous fossil site in Taiwan . Since the Japanese era, many fossils were accidentally dug up when Zuozhen was paving the way, so Zuozhen is called the town of fossils. In addition, Zuozhen has the terrain of chalk mountains. This natural terrain has also formed the canyon landscape of Caoshan Yueshi . Zuozhen has an old street left over from the Japanese era. This old street, known as the shortest in Taiwan, was once very lively. There were ice shops, barber shops, theaters, hotels, and even restaurants. There were all kinds of food, drinks, fun, and entertainment you can think of. In addition, the sugarcane industry in Zuozhen was very developed during the Japanese era. At that time, in order to transport sugarcane, Sugarcane, a train station was set up to carry both cargo and passengers. From what I said above, you can imagine that Zuozhen was very prosperous in its golden age. As mentioned earlier, Zuozhen has rich natural terrain. The hillsides and water sources are protected and prohibited from development. This also restricted Zuozhen’s development. After the decline of the sugar industry, the train station was abolished in 1973 , and local employment gradually decreased. In the 1980s, Zuozhen began to have a serious population outflow. Coupled with the development of expressways in recent years , Zuozhen no longer has the status of a transportation hub. The population is aging and it is heading towards decline. It has gone from a bustling and noisy town to a very small town. After passing through Zuozhen, we saw the big words “I Love Mango” on the Yujing Bridge. We arrived in Yujing. Yujing City is located at the intersection of Provincial Highways 20, Provincial Highway 3 and Provincial Highway 84. Yujing’s most famous history is the “Danba Nian Incident.” In 1915, Yu Qingfang’s men launched the largest anti-Japanese campaign in Taiwan’s history in Yujing, with thousands of casualties. This was the most devastating anti-Japanese incident in history, so there’s a memorial park in downtown Yujing, located diagonally opposite the Xingnan Bus Station. We didn’t go inside the park today, but we ‘ll come back later to take you on a tour of Yujing Old Street. After arriving at Yujing Station, our first stop was Zengwen Reservoir , where we’d change to the Green 24 bus. We’d then transfer to the 9:00 AM Green 24 bus to Zengwen Reservoir. The Green 24 was originally a highway bus route, but the Tainan-Zengwen Reservoir route was split into two sections, the second half running from Yujing to Zengwen. Wenshui Reservoir has been changed to Green 24. Green 24 departs from Yujing and passes through Zhongzheng Road on Provincial Highway 3, passing Lutao, Nanxi, Nanxi Wanfo Temple, and then passes through the management area of Zengwen Reservoir before arriving at the Observation Tower. If you want to go to the Observation Tower for a boat tour, please remember to take the extended Green 24 service. The journey from Yujing to the Observation Tower of Zengwen Reservoir takes about 30 to 35 minutes. The Green Line connects to the Green 24 in a reasonable time, so don’t worry about missing the connection. However, be sure to remember the Green Line time. Today’s itinerary will be written at the end of the video. I will explain it again. We just talked about Zuozhen . Next, we will talk about another less popular area – Nanxi. Nanxi District is located in the northeast of Tainan City . Nanxi is almost completely enveloped by the Central Mountain Range. During the Japanese era, a very turbulent history occurred in Nanxi. The Japanese army was enraged by the “Danba Nian Anti-Japanese Incident”. Residents of Nanxi were either dead or on the run. Thousands were captured by the Japanese army and nearly died , while hundreds of thousands of people were either displaced or homeless. A city-wide massacre left the residents without a village, shrouded in fear and shadow. Nanxi had such a turbulent history, but most people only remember the “Danba Nian Anti-Japanese Incident” where it occurred in Yujing and Nanhua. In fact, the impact of this incident was much greater than we imagined . However, after entering the era of the Nationalist government, Nanxi began to change. Nanxi’s popularity has been boosted by the Meiling Scenic Area, Wanfo Temple, the Lutaoyangjiangjia settlement, and the neighboring town of Zengwen Reservoir . Agriculture is the primary source of Nanxi’s economy, with carambolas, plums, mangoes, and longans being the main fruits. The densely branched carambolas are the most famous. Before crossing the Zengwen Second Bridge, you’ll arrive at the Zengwen Reservoir toll booth. Entry to the Zengwen Reservoir requires a ticket , and a toll collector will board the bus to collect the full fare: NT$100 per person, and a half-fare: NT$50. After crossing the Zengwen Second Bridge, you’ll find the Zengwen Administration Bureau and the China Youth Corps Youth Center. Accommodation is available at the Youth Activity Center, with a room (slip) costing NT$2,250 per night. The waters of the Tsengwen Reservoir are located in Dapu Township, Chiayi County, and include [the following:] (slip of the tongue). The dam crest seen in the image also dates back to the Japanese era. To address irrigation issues for the Jianan Plain, Hatta Yoichi constructed the Wushantou Reservoir upstream of the Guantian Creek, a tributary of the Tsengwen Creek. However, upon commissioning, only 25% of the water was filled, requiring a larger source of water to fully irrigate the farmland. Hatta Yoichi had proposed building a new dam at the site , but the outbreak of World War II halted the project. During the Nationalist era, to address irrigation issues, the Taiwan Provincial Water Resources Bureau began planning in 1959 and, after six years of construction, began construction. At the end of October 1973, the Tseng-wen Reservoir was officially completed and put into operation. It is currently the largest reservoir in Taiwan. However, the newly built reservoir flooded the farmland of Dapu. The residents of Dapu, who originally made their living from agriculture, gradually switched to tourism, and some of those living in the farmland moved to the high ground on Qiedong Street (slip of the tongue). When the village was first relocated , the residents were reluctant to leave their “bamboo houses” flooded , so they used various ingenuity to dismantle the bamboo tubes and wall panels used to build the houses and move their belongings up there without any mechanical equipment. We are now at the Tseng-wen Reservoir Observation Tower. Next, we will take you to see the Tseng-wen Reservoir. The scenery around the reservoir. We took a car to the viewing building. The first thing we did was of course to take a boat tour on the lake to take everyone to appreciate the scenery around Zengwen Reservoir . If you want to take a boat tour on the lake, walk forward from the trail and you will see the sign of the boat entrance. Turn right and you will see the ticket office. Ah Han chose the one-hour lake tour that is only available on holidays . After departing from the boarding pier, you will go to Wild Boar Island and Flying Eagle Canyon. The two-hour tour costs 350 yuan per person . In addition to the Wild Boar Island and Flying Eagle Canyon mentioned above, there is also fishing. The price per person is 600 yuan on weekdays and 700 yuan on holidays . There will be a tour guide on each boat for the Zengwen Reservoir tour. The ecology of Zengwen Reservoir was actually severely damaged when Typhoon Morakot hit. The reservoir was filled with silt and driftwood, which became a major problem. At that time, the national army was requested for support, but there was no way to salvage the driftwood in a short time. Finally, the public was asked to assist. Within a few weeks, the driftwood was finally cleared. We were about to arrive at our first point, Wild Boar Island. Why are there wild boars on this island ? After the reservoir was completed, the wild boars here were raised by free-range breeding. The entire island has not been damaged by human activities, forming a natural ecosystem that can accommodate wild boars. The wild boars here are very interesting. As soon as they hear Pavarotti’s music, they will come closer and wait for you to feed them. However, the wild boars here are very ferocious , so don’t get too close when feeding them. Why do we play Pavarotti’s music? At the beginning of the tour, there was only one boat , and we used the sound of the whistle to inform the wild boars. But gradually, the demand for tours increased , and when the second and third boats came on board, the whistles of the three boats were all different. The wild boars only recognized the sound of the first boat. In order to make it easier for the wild boars to identify , we used Pavarotti’s music for all boats. After feeding the wild boars, we went to Eagle Canyon to see the eagle soaring in the endless sky. The scenery is truly beautiful. After admiring it, our one-hour lake cruise is almost over. We return to the dock for a short break. Finally, we’ll show you the views of Zengwen Reservoir from different angles from the observation deck. On a clear day, the scenery is truly spectacular and beautiful. If you want some air conditioning, there’s a cafe inside the observation deck where you can sit and relax while sipping coffee and enjoying the charming scenery. We’ll then take the 12:30 Green 24 back to Yujing and take you on a stroll through Yujing Old Street. We’re now back at the Xingnan Bus Yujing Station. Yujing Old Street is located on Zhongzheng Road nearby. Three century-old shops still remain on the old street, including There are Zhenchun Chinese Medicine Store, Jishengtang Chinese Medicine Store, Huichuntang Chinese Medicine Store, and a Yinling Photo Studio with a history of over 80 years. The old street is full of mango ice. We all know that Yujing is most famous for its mangoes. Why are Yujing mangoes so famous? In 1954, the Agricultural Reconstruction Association sent an introduction inspection team to Florida, USA to introduce five mango varieties: Aiwen, Haydn, Jilu, Kate, and Kent. After 8 years of research, they were officially promoted in 1962. At that time, no one in Yujing wanted to take the risk of planting foreign mango varieties. Only Zheng Hanchi decided to plant it despite the ridicule of the villagers . After many failures , it was not until 1969 that a fruit farmer Using waterproof paper bags not only ensures beautiful mangoes but also protects them from fruit flies, significantly improving the quality and yield of Aiwen mangoes. This has made Yujing’s Aiwen mangoes a hit, instantly becoming a hit in the market. The Beiji Temple on Yujing Old Street is dedicated to Xuantian Shangdi (God of Heaven ). During the Yongli period of the Ming Dynasty, Han Chinese who arrived in Yujing to reclaim land suffered from disease . To exorcise evil spirits and cure illness, they invited Xuantian Shangdi to reside in Yujing . Okay, after taking you on a tour of the Zengwen Reservoir, I’ll record this episode for you. I’m Ah Han. If you like our channel, please like, subscribe, and turn on the bell. Bye~
